Chapter 9: Unseen Eyes
As Mason Becker walked down the metallic and concrete corridors towards Admiral Wright's office, the Admiral couldn't shake the feeling of unease. She knew Mason well enough to recognize when something was on his mind, and the intent behind his steps was unnerving. The fact that he was heading straight to her office only added to her growing sense of concern.
When Mason finally entered the Admiral's office, she quickly shut down the monitoring program to avoid raising any suspicion. Mason's cold, steel-gray eyes seemed to pierce through her, searching for something he either knew or felt was there. Despite the growing tension, he calmly proceeded to give his report on the mission's success.
The Admiral couldn't help but notice that Mason was looking around the room, his eyes calculating every detail and inch, just as he would in the field. It was unusual to see him so vigilant and observant in such a controlled environment. She wondered what had triggered this behavior and what he might be trying to ascertain.
Once Mason finished his report, the Admiral prepared to dismiss him, but he asked for permission to speak freely. Nervously, she granted him that permission, unsure of what he was about to say.
"Stop watching my day-to-day activities," Mason said in a chillingly calm tone, "and leave Emily out of this. She doesn't know about my job, and I don't want her involved."
The words hit the Admiral like a shockwave. How did Mason know that he was being watched? She knew that every operation was recorded, but Mason seemed to be referring to something beyond that. How much did he truly know? How deep did his knowledge go? The prospect terrified her.
She tried to maintain her composure as she responded, "Mason, I assure you, I don't know what you're talking about. Your report on your missions is all we've been monitoring."
Mason's expression remained inscrutable, and without another word, he turned and left the room. The Admiral was left in a state of bewilderment and anxiety. She knew that Mason Becker was no ordinary agent, but the depth of his awareness and the secrets he seemed to hold were beyond anything she had anticipated.
As she sat alone in her office, she couldn't help but wonder about the enigma that was Mason Becker. He was a lethal operative, a man of extremes, driven by a desire to protect the innocent and avenge those he had lost. Yet, beneath that hardened exterior, there was a vulnerability and a need to protect the few people he cared about, like the young girl named Emily.
The Admiral knew that she had to tread carefully with Mason. He was a valuable asset, but also a potential danger if his trust was betrayed. She couldn't help but feel a sense of guilt for prying into his personal life, but she also knew that it was her duty to ensure the safety and security of the Office of Naval Intelligence.
As she contemplated the complex puzzle that was Mason Becker, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was so much more to him than met the eye. The shadows that surrounded him were deep and impenetrable, and she wondered if she would ever truly understand the enigmatic man known as Azrael.
