A triple drabble (exactly 300 words) written for Ultra for the Seasons of Drabbles - Summer Round 2023
High Stakes
"You're goin' down, Bunny!"
The fox forcefully slammed his paw on the table in front of the small rabbit who sat across from him with her head bowed and her eyes cast downwards. He gleefully noted her defeated posture as he added, "I might let you off easy, though...if you beg for mercy!"
The rabbit didn't respond for a long moment. "You think you're so clever. Don't you, Mister Fox?" she finally answered quietly as she slowly raised her head.
At the unexpected sight of the victory blazing in her eyes, the fox belatedly realized the truth. He had been overconfident and the bunny had successfully bluffed against him. Consequently, he wasn't surprised when she triumphantly threw her winning paw of cards down on the table.
"Read 'em and weep, Fuzzball! Don't even bother to beg for my mercy, though," the cute...but devious...little card shark exclaimed ruthlessly. "In fact, I'll take my prize right now!"
Hours later, Nick finally finished the requested tasks of cleaning Judy's apartment, ironing her uniforms, and preparing a large pot of homemade vegetable stew for her dinner...all because he had lost their so-called friendly wager. He then dropped tiredly into his chair across the table from her again since, despite winning their game, she had still generously invited him to share her spoils of war.
As they ate, though, he couldn't help but to ask ruefully. "How did you get to be so good at Poker, anyway, Carrots?"
Judy shrugged. "There's not much else to do on a Saturday night in Bunnyburrow," she admitted with a mischievous grin.
Nick just laughed before they made plans to play again the next time they were off-duty.
After all...despite the high stakes...he always had fun with his favorite bunny on game night!
