(A/N: And now it's time for Chapter 2! I know you want to see what happens, so let's get this chapter started on the double so you won't be kept in suspense!)
It was Saturday morning in the Mushroom Kingdom. The sun was shining, and it looked like the day was going to be nice. But would it be the same way in Brooklyn? Well, we'll worry about that when we get there because we're supposed to be at Princess Peach's Castle right now, so let's head on over there and see what the princess is up to!
Because she was a princess, Peach was an early riser as a rule. She had been up since 6:00 a.m., and she had gotten dressed and ready for the day. She even made her bed all nice and neat. By the time she had finished all that, it was 6:30.
"Breakfast must be ready." Peach said to herself as she looked at the time. So Peach made her way downstairs, to her castle's dining hall, where she would enjoy the most important meal of the day.
During the morning meal, the Toads were all feeling a little nervous. They knew that their princess would be leaving the kingdom soon, to accompany Mario and Luigi to their old hometown, to fix something that hadn't been fixed.
"Princess, are you sure you'll be safe when you go to Brooklyn with the Mario Bros.?" asked a member of the council.
"I think so. I deem myself capable of holding my own in case anybody in Brooklyn tries acting like a creep to me. But if I'm having any trouble with creeps, I think Mario and Luigi will be able to help me handle the problem. Look at how well they stopped Bowser's reign of tyranny." Peach pointed out, before eating another forkful of egg whites.
"The princess is right. She'll be fine as long as she's got the Super Mario Bros. on her side." the Toad General said.
"Thank you, General. I'm glad you have faith in Mario and Luigi, like I do." Peach replied with a smile.
After breakfast, Peach gave the Toad Council some instructions on what to do when you're ruling the Mushroom Kingdom. They listened to her and nodded. She made it sound so easy. By the time she had finished, it was 10 minutes to 8:00.
"Oh my goodness! It's almost time for me to meet Mario and Luigi!" the princess exclaimed as she looked at the clock.
"Then you'd better get going, Princess. We shall do our best to rule the kingdom as well as you do." the Toad General said.
"Thank you! Good-bye and good luck!" the princess called as she made her way out of the castle.
"Good luck, Princess!" the Toads called as they watched their beloved ruler leave. They hoped their princess would be okay in Brooklyn.
At the Mario household, Mario and Luigi had woken up at 7:00 a.m. They had set the alarm for 6:00 a.m., but they hadn't slept very well because they were so nervous about going to the home of their first customers to explain the trouble with Francis. So when they heard the alarm go off, Mario knew they weren't ready to get up yet, so he reset the alarm to go off an hour later.
When 7:00 arrived and Mario shut off the alarm, he sighed. He knew there was no stopping the day from coming. Scared as they were, this had to be done.
"Come on, Lu, we've gotta get up now. It's morning." Mario said as he got out of bed and walked over to Luigi's bed, shaking him slightly in order to try and wake him up.
"Mario, I'm still tired." Luigi groaned, pulling the covers over his head.
"So am I. But the princess will be here in an hour, to join us when we go to Brooklyn. We've got that much time to get ready... unless you want her to see you in your pajamas." Mario said.
That woke Luigi up! He nearly plowed over his brother as flew out of bed and ran to the dresser to grab his clothes for the day.
"I guess I'll need to thank the princess for agreeing to come with us." Mario said to himself as he watched Luigi disappear from the room, for he was going to get dressed in the bathroom. He always did. So Mario got out his clothes for the day and got himself dressed in their room.
When Luigi returned to their bedroom, dressed for the day, Mario was in the process of making his bed. So Luigi quickly made his own bed. He made his bed neater than Mario's, because he was always something of a neat freak.
After making their beds, Luigi said, "All right, Mario. What are we going to do for breakfast? Do you want to fix something here, or wait until we get to Brooklyn to grab something to eat?"
"We can fix something quick and easy here. Like a bowl of cereal." Mario said, getting himself a cereal bowl and a spoon. He placed them on the table, then walked over to the fridge, looking up at the boxes of cereal on top of it.
"That sounds like a plan." Luigi said. On a normal day, he would be willing to cook something for breakfast, but knowing what they had to do today made him a little too nervous to cook anything.
"Okay, I know what kind of cereal I want." Mario said.
"What?" Luigi asked after getting a cereal bowl and spoon for himself and setting them on the table.
"I want the Cocoa Puffs." Mario said, pointing at the box. He would've gotten it himself, but the top of the fridge was too high for him to reach.
"I knew you were going to pick that cereal. Why am I not surprised that you want Cocoa Puffs for breakfast?" Luigi asked aloud as he got down the box of Cocoa Puffs and handed it to Mario.
"You know me too well. Now let me guess: are you going to have the Lucky Charms?" Mario asked as he opened the box of chocolatey cereal.
Luigi, who had been looking at the box of Lucky Charms, turned and looked at Mario in shock.
"What are you, some kind of mind-reader?!" Luigi asked in surprise.
"Didn't you know I was a psychic with X-ray vision?" Mario smirked.
"Huh. I thought that was Mom." Luigi replied.
"Big brothers have that ability as well, Lu." Mario told him.
"We're twins, Mario." Luigi reminded his brother.
"Yeah, but I'm older." Mario said.
"Well, I'm taller than you, so there. But in case you're wondering, you read my mind." Luigi sighed as he grabbed the box of Lucky Charms.
After filling their bowls with the cereal, Luigi put the boxes back on top of the fridge, and Mario got out the milk carton. The brothers poured the milk into their bowls, and then they began to eat.
"Mario?" Luigi asked.
"Yeah?" Mario replied.
"I'm scared." Luigi told him.
"I know. So am I." said Mario.
"What we have to do today is part of the reason why I didn't sleep so well last night." Luigi admitted.
"You're not the only one who couldn't get to sleep because of that thought, Luigi. Why else do you think I set the alarm to go off an hour later when it woke us at 6:00?" Mario asked his brother after swallowing a spoonful of Cocoa Puffs.
"What if Francis' owners don't believe us? No one with a pet will ever allow a repairman to pin the blame for the botched job on their precious pet." Luigi said.
"Unless his owners really have dealt with Francis being wary of strange people." Mario said.
"I hope they have." Luigi said as he managed to eat a spoonful of his Lucky Charms. Hopefully the magically delicious cereal would help give him some courage to do what needed to be done.
The brothers finished the rest of their meal in silence, and by the time they finished eating and took care of their morning routine, it was almost time for the princess to show up at their house. So they sat on the couch together, trying to calm their nerves, which were just about shot.
"You ready for this, Lu?" Mario asked his brother.
"No. I know I should be ready, but I'm not. I'm just too scared of what's going to happen when we go there. And we can't not think about it. It's almost time to go." Luigi replied.
Seconds after the clock struck 8:00, the pair heard a knock at the door.
"I believe that's Peach now." said Mario, getting up and answering the door. Sure enough, there stood Princess Peach.
"Good morning, Mario." Peach greeted the plumber.
"Morning, Peach." Mario replied, happy to see her.
"Are you boys ready to go to Brooklyn?" Peach asked.
Mario looked at Luigi, who sighed, stood up, and joined his brother and the princess.
"We are now." Mario replied.
"Then let's go." Peach said.
"Yup. Let's-a go." Mario said. After locking the door to the house, he and Luigi led Peach to the Warp Pipe that would take them all to Brooklyn.
"Here goes..." Peach said, and she went through the Warp Pipe. Mario and Luigi jumped in after her, hoping for the best.
Seconds later, the three friends found themselves in Brooklyn, New York. Surprisingly, the sky was overcast, a stark contrast to the sunny day in the Mushroom Kingdom. The look of the sky gave Mario and Luigi a bad feeling. They were thinking that the outcome of their talk with Francis' owners was going to be anything but good.
"Well, here we are, in Brooklyn." Mario said to Peach.
"So, this is Brooklyn..." Peach said, looking around. The city had been repaired from the damage Bowser and his army had caused when the war was brought here. Things were getting back to normal here, and that was a good thing.
"Now that we're here, shall we make our way to where we need to go?" Mario asked.
"We might as well go over there and get this over with." Luigi said.
"Yeah. Once we get it done, we don't have to worry about it anymore. The sooner, the better." Mario replied.
The Mario Bros. had their van repaired and had parked it outside of the apartment building where their family lived. They even made room for the princess to ride with them as they drove to the home of their first customers. This time, they were able to get there with no problems whatsoever.
"Okay, here we are." Mario said as he parked the van outside of the building. He and Luigi got out of the van and looked at the house before them. It was still as impressive as it was when they saw it for the first time.
"We're here, Princess." Luigi said, offering a hand to the monarch to help her out of the van.
"All right. Now we're going to do this." Peach said, taking Luigi's hand as she got out of the vehicle.
They all walked up to the front door of the house, and Mario rang the bell. Secretly, the brothers were hoping that Francis and his owners would not be home. That maybe Francis was being taken for a walk, or perhaps he was at the vet's office. Not so! What they heard on the other side of the door was the sound of Francis barking.
"You know, I think they might actually be home." Mario said, knowing what this meant.
"Nah, for all we know, the owners went shopping and they left Francis at home by himself." Luigi said.
That wasn't so, either. Seconds later, the door opened, revealing the couple who had called Mario and Luigi to fix a drip in their faucet. They were quite surprised to see Mario and Luigi standing at the door. Peach was standing behind the brothers, so they didn't see her right away.
"Well, what brings you two here?" asked the wife of the couple. She didn't sound happy, but she didn't sound mad. She sounded rather surprised.
Francis peeked out from behind his mistress, trying to see who was at the door.
Mario and Luigi saw the dog trying to look at them, and they looked at each other uncomfortably as the sight of Francis made them lose the courage to speak up. So who was going to be the one to answer the woman's question?
"Hello. My name is Peach. I'm friends with the Super Mario Bros. They've come here because they need to speak with you about something important." Princess Peach spoke up as she stepped forward, finally breaking the silence, which had been getting pretty awkward. At least she got out the words the brothers were too afraid to say themselves, much to their relief.
"I see. Very well, Miss Peach. My name is Elmore, and this is my wife, Martha. Come in, all of you." said the husband of the couple as he shook hands with Peach, not knowing that she was a princess. She'd left her crown at the castle, and she didn't say that she was royalty because she didn't want any special treatment.
(A/N: I know the Brooklyn Couple were very minor characters in the movie, but since they're going to play a major role in the following chapter, I had to give them names. It's a whole lot easier than just referring to them as 'the wife' and 'the husband'.)
Elmore and Martha led the group into the living room, with Martha asking, "Can we get the three of you something to drink?" But the Marios and the princess politely declined the offer.
The Mario Bros. and Peach sat down together on the living room couch. From left to right, it was Mario, Peach, and Luigi. Elmore and Martha sat down in chairs that allowed them to face the plumbers and their lady friend. Francis quietly laid down at the feet of his mistress.
So now the Mario Bros. and the princess were looking at Elmore and Martha, who looked back at them. The silence had returned, and it was starting to get awkward again.
What's going to happen next? I'm not going to tell you anything, except that you'll have to stay tuned if you want to find out!
