CHAPTER FOUR

Emily stood up, dazed. "I… my dad's in the mafia?" "He's not only in the mafia, he runs one." so that's why he left for long periods of time. Emily thought. "Look, I had NO idea." "I believe you," said Owens, his eyes soft, placing a hand on Emily's shoulder. "But you are technically under investigation. It's protocol. You have to pass a polygraph." "What's that?" Emily asked. "Basically a lie detector test. It's not bogus, don't worry." "alright…" Emily was worried sick. If something came up she was screwed! "Follow me, officer Hong from forensics will conduct the test." They walked into an interrogation room, and a beautiful asian woman was sitting at the desk, with a bunch of equipment. Emily sat down and felt something squishy. "What's this, one of those inflatable butt pillows?" "Essentially." officer hong said. "It's to make sure you're not clenching to release tension. Like what you're doing right now." Emily released her buttcheeks. "There," Hong said, glancing at her tablet. "Let's conduct some control questions. Is your full name Emilia Melrose Garcia?" "Yes." "Are your eyes purple?" "No." "Are you wearing yellow earrings?" "No." alright, i think we're ready. Did you know anything about your father's job before now?" "I knew SOMETHING was suspicious, but I didn't think anything of it." "Good. Did you leave anything at all out of your file?" "...No." "Are you sure?" "...Yes…" Emily hesitated. Oh crap. She HAD left something out. "I mean, yes, i did." "What was it?" Emily looked around nervously. The thing she had left out was the doctor's note. The one that had detected an unidentified, possibly dangerous gene when she was a baby. The doctor that mysteriously died one hour later. Probably by her father's hand, looking back. If anyone found out, she would lose her job. Police officers cannot have any genetic mutations that affect day to day life drastically. She would lose her job if she told the truth and if she lied. She had no choice but to do something risky. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, raised her hands, and summoned every bit of strength she had, and thought of an hour ago, talking to Noah. "retrorsum converti tempus!" the room swirled out of focus, she saw Noah's face, then everything went dark.
