The morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow inside Jack and Sam's home office. Jack sat amidst the shelves, surrounded by a collection of books that told the story of their shared passions and adventures. The room was filled with a sense of nostalgia, memories of missions, scientific discoveries, albums, and heartfelt moments they had experienced together.
As Jack looked around, he realized that the shelves were becoming increasingly crowded with Sam's books. Her vast collection covered a wide range of subjects, from astrophysics and advanced technologies to mechanics and literature. It was a reflection of her insatiable thirst for knowledge and her dedication to her work as a brilliant astrophysicist.
He decided it was time to do some organizing. Jack wanted to create more space for their shared collection and ensure that the room remained a comfortable and inspiring environment. He started by carefully taking down some books, one by one, and arranging them in neat stacks on the floor.
He paused occasionally, flipping through the pages of certain books, smiling at notes and annotations they had made together, and reminiscing about the discussions they had had surrounding those texts.
As he worked, Jack thought about the years they had spent together, fighting side by side against extraterrestrial threats, exploring new worlds, and deepening their connection. They had grown closer with every mission, every challenge, and every shared moment of triumph.
He knew that each book held a special place in their journey, representing not just Sam's expertise but also the bond they had formed through their mutual love for learning and discovery.
As the morning wore on, the shelves began to look more organized, with a mix of Sam's books, some of his own, and a few they had acquired together, he was careful to create sections for various topics, grouping similar subjects to make it easier for them to find what they needed. And because she had the annoying habit of putting everything in alphabetical order, even his DVD collection was sorted that way.
One album caught his attention when he was sorting them. As Jack flipped through the old photo album, he was transported back in time to one of the most memorable vacations they had ever taken—to Mexico, right after they had tied the knot. The photos captured the essence of their love and happiness during those blissful days.
In one photo, Jack and Sam were walking hand in hand along a pristine sandy beach. The turquoise waves gently lapped at their feet as they strolled, their smiles radiant and carefree. The sunlight kissed their skin, and they looked truly at peace with the world, enjoying the moment and each other's company.
Another picture showed them at a luxurious resort, sitting side by side on a beach lounger, sipping tropical drinks. Jack had his arm draped casually over Sam's shoulder, and she leaned into him, their bodies close, radiating affection and contentment. The backdrop of palm trees and crystal-clear waters made it look like a scene straight out of a dream. Or a movie.
Then there was the shot of them on a romantic dinner date. They were dressed in their finest attire, the flickering candlelight casting a soft glow on their faces. Jack gazed at Sam with a look of pure adoration, and she beamed back at him, the connection between them noticeable.
In another photo, they were caught in a wanton embrace, lost in a kiss under a starlit sky. It was evident from the way they held each other that their love was deep and salacious, and the sparks between them were undeniable. Their surroundings seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them in that moment of pure intimacy.
Seeing these photos brought a flood of emotions to Jack. Those were truly magical days, a time when they had the chance to just be together, away from the pressures of their work, and fully immerse themselves in each other's love.
He remembered well when they were lounging on beach chairs under the shade of a large umbrella at their luxurious Mexican resort. The sun was shining brightly, but the gentle ocean breeze kept them cool. They looked deeply in love, still basking in the glow of their recent wedding.
Jack remembered turning to Sam with a playful grin.
"So, Mrs. O'Neill, are you enjoying our honeymoon so far?"
Sam smiled back, her eyes sparkling with affection.
"Absolutely, Mr. O'Neill. It's been wonderful. I can't think of a better way to start our married life together."
Jack reached out and took her hand in his, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Me neither. You know, I'm grateful every day that you said 'yes' to marrying me."
Sam leaned in and kissed him softly.
"I'm grateful too, Jack. You make me so happy."
They spent a few moments lost in each other's gaze, the world around them fading away. It felt like they were the only two people on the planet.
After a while, Jack broke the silence with a mischievous grin.
"Hey, you up for some adventure today? I heard there's a beautiful reef nearby, perfect for snorkeling."
Sam's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Yes, definitely! I've been looking forward to exploring the underwater world here."
They quickly got up from their beach chairs, grabbed their snorkeling gear, and headed towards the reef. As they swam together in the crystal-clear waters, they marveled at the vibrant marine life and shared broad smiles when they discovered colorful fish that seemed to be posing for them.
Back on the beach, they sat side by side, sipping on refreshing tropical drinks. Sam leaned her head on Jack's shoulder, feeling a sense of contentment she had never experienced before.
"I love this, Jack," Sam said softly. "Just being here with you, away from the demands of work and responsibilities. It feels like a dream."
Jack smiled, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
"It is a dream, Sam. Our dream come true. I want to cherish every moment with you, for the rest of our lives."
She looked up at him, her eyes filled with love.
"And I want the same, Jack. You're my partner in every sense of the word, and I couldn't ask for a better one."
They shared another tender kiss, sealing their promises to each other. And as they did, the world seemed to slow, and they felt a sense of profound connection and happiness.
As the sun began to set, they walked hand in hand along the shoreline, leaving footprints in the soft sand. That lovely moment was soon replaced with another one as Jack turned the page and his fingers lingered on a particular photo of a sunset.
He recalled the serious discussion they had during that vacation about the possibility of having children. At that time, Jack was still the Head of Homeworld Security, and Sam had recently rejoined SG-1 to fight the formidable challenge of combating the Ori. Their professions were risky and demanding, leaving little room for the stability and security required to raise a family.
One evening, as the sun set over the ocean, they found a quiet spot to talk about their future. That afternoon, she had looked almost sad, as they watched at a group of small children. The kids were playing with a little ball as Jack and Sam walked through the market, where traditional arts, crafts, and local foods were being sold. Jack remembered the mixture of emotions that swirled inside him—love for Sam, excitement at the idea of starting a family, but also fear and uncertainty about the challenges they would face.
He took a deep breath and started the conversation, "Sam, you know I love you, right? And I've been thinking a lot about our future."
Sam nodded, giving him her full attention.
"I know, Jack. I've been thinking about it too."
"I want you to be happy, Sam," Jack continued, "and having a family with you would be incredible. Under different circumstances, I think we could have a beautiful family. But our jobs are risky and demanding, and I worry about bringing children into that kind of life."
Sam sighed, her eyes reflecting a mix of emotions. She had been thinking about it for a while but hadn't voiced it out loud too afraid of what he might think or want. They were still walking in fairly uncharted territory. Marriage was still a new concept, at least for her.
"I understand, Jack. I feel the same way. I've always thought that if one day I got married, kids probably would be the next thing, but I also know very well the sacrifices and challenges that come with our professions. I'm painfully aware."
"But do you want to be a mother, Sam?", Jack asked. His eyes filled with concern.
Sam looked down at her hands, where her wedding ring lay, shining in the moonlight.
"I want you Jack. I've always wanted you", she said, lifting her head and looking at him.
"Me too, honey. Since the first day I saw you", he said with a little smile.
"But being a mother has never held a strong appeal in me, to be honest. Do you think I'm cold or heartless because I don't think about having kids?", she asked, her voice trembling a little.
Jack held both her hands tight.
"Of course not. You are one of the most compassionate people I've ever met. And we have Cassie, she loves you very much and I know that you also love her too. I was just asking if you wanted to have your own baby, that's all, honey", he said, his eyes filled with worry.
Sam sighed.
"Yes, Cassie… When we brought her back from Hanka I thought of adopting her. I briefly played with that idea in my head but quickly realized my life was no life for a kid. I remembered what Mark and I went through when my mother died and dad was always absent. I would be frequently absent in Cassie's life and I couldn't do that to her. Janet was the best choice and she was a terrific mother to Cassie", Sam said with tears in her eyes.
Jack nodded. He knew how conflicted Sam had been at that time. He gently caressed her sun-kissed hair, tucking some loose strands behind her ear.
"What about you, Jack? Do you want to be a father again?", she asked. Grabbing his hand and kissing it.
Jack swallowed. He hoped she wouldn't be disappointed with his answer.
"Like you said, under different circumstances nothing would make me happier than having a bunch of little Carter-O'Neills running around our house. But realistically, honey, I feel my time as a father has already passed. I'm too old, Sam. It wouldn't be fair to the kid or to you", he said slowly.
"Jack, don't say that…", Sam started but he interrupted her immediately. "I know our age difference doesn't matter to you but in this case, it does, Sam. You're 39 but I'm 55. Think about it analytically, knowing that we wouldn't be able to start a family in the near future", he asked.
Sam bit her lower lip and considered his words. Deep down, she knew he was right. After several minutes of silence, she looked at him with a determined expression. Jack knew she had made a decision.
"You are right in most of the things you said." Sam then took a deep breath, still looking at him.
"I'm still on active duty and in the field and Earth is now battling the Ori. We don't know how long this new fight might last. And even after we defeat them, who'll be next? There will always be someone or something to fight against. I don't see myself being a mother in a world like this, Jack. I'm sorry but I simply don't", she admitted, hiding her face in his hands.
Jack held her tight. He completely understood her position. They spent hours talking and sharing their hopes, fears, and dreams. Ultimately, they both came to the difficult decision that they would not have children. It was a choice they made out of love and concern for each other and any potential children they might have.
"You never have to apologize for telling me what you're feeling, honey. This is an important decision. We are together now, so we make decisions together. We both need to be on the same page on matters as important as this one", he said, holding her tight in his arms.
"We have each other, Jack," Sam said softly, "and that's more than enough for me. We can still have a fulfilling life together, even without children."
Jack nodded, feeling a weight had lifted off his shoulders.
"You're right, honey. We already have an extraordinary life together, and I wouldn't change it for anything. I love you very much."
"I love you too, Mr. O'Neill", Sam said, kissing him deeply.
As Jack closed the photo album, he felt a surge of gratitude for the life they had built together. The vacation in Mexico was just one beautiful chapter in their ongoing journey, a testament to the enduring love they shared. The passionate kisses, the laughter, and the memories of that time would forever hold a special place in his heart, reminding him of the incredible woman he was fortunate enough to be able to call his wife.
In the years that followed, they faced countless challenges and dangerous missions together. But as they did, their commitment to their jobs and each other only grew stronger. They found fulfillment in their shared adventures and accomplishments, knowing they were making a difference in the world.
Looking back now, Jack realized they had never regretted their decision. They had each other, a love that had endured the test of time and adversity. Their bond was unbreakable, and they had built a life together that was uniquely theirs.
Jack felt grateful for the life they had created—a life filled with love, passion, and purpose. They may not have had children, but they had found a deeper connection and fulfillment that had been more than enough to sustain them throughout the years. And he knew, without a doubt, that they had made the right decision.
He smiled as he looked around the room. The office felt refreshed and ready to host more shared moments of research, planning, and occasional quiet contemplation.
Glancing at the clock, Jack realized Sam would be back from the SGC soon. He looked forward to seeing the surprise on her face when she saw the results of his organizing efforts. He was getting better with age. Who knew?
As he sat down in his chair, he felt a deep sense of satisfaction and love for the life they had built together. Their office was not just a place for books and papers; it was a reflection of their shared journey—a journey that had brought them closer together, creating a bond that was as strong as the stars they had explored and as enduring as the knowledge they had acquired.
Jack couldn't wait to share this little surprise with Sam, and he knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, side by side, just as they always had.
