Upon A Common Path
Frederick and Anne first met upon a common path near the edge of the village.
...
Frederick knew he could have passed by the young lady with just the standard polite nod of acknowledgement between strangers. However, something about her made him want to stop and actually speak. She was not a classic beauty, but she carried herself without airs and had a fresh-faced innocence about her...as well as an intelligent look in her eyes...that appealed to him greatly.
"Excuse me," he therefore called out cheerfully. "My apologies for intruding on your solitude, but I wonder if you might be willing to provide me with some direction? I have been visiting with my brother at the curacy in Monkford, but I fear that I somehow managed to get turned around during my explorations of the area. Consequently, I am no longer certain of the correct path to return."
It was not exactly an untruth, either. Frederick had indeed wandered quite a distance away from his starting point without paying any attention to identifying landmarks. However, as a Commander of the Royal Navy, he felt confident that he could eventually navigate his return without assistance.
Such straightforward action on his own behalf, though, would not gain him the lady's acquaintance.
For her part, it was clear that the young woman was not accustomed to being addressed by someone completely unknown to her. Nevertheless, despite the unfamiliarity of the situation, she still politely pointed out the easiest path for him to follow with such simple goodnatured grace...and without the need for any of those false simpering smiles that other ladies of marriageable age might choose to employ at such a time...that Frederick was instantly charmed by her.
Consequently, the man determined immediately that he wanted to know her better.
As the young man approached her on the path, Anne could not help but to notice that he had strong, handsome features and that he strolled with an easy, relaxed gait. Even though he was alone, he wore such a genial smile upon his visage that it seemed he did not feel the weight of his own importance as some men in her experience...mainly her father...were wont to do.
Since she did not recognize him as a member of her acquaintance, however...or even as a resident of the village...at first she thought that he would merely nod and perhaps tip his hat politely as he passed her. Then, once they were no longer on the same path, he would become nothing more than a pleasant, but fading, footnote in the memory of her midday constitutional.
Nevertheless, to her consternation, not only did the man pause as they drew close, but he actually spoke in order to request her assistance, as well.
Anne was hesitant to respond only because, even as the Baron's daughter, she was unaccustomed to such attention - as she was sure the resulting flush of heat across her cheekbones could attest. However, since there was nothing untoward or improper about his actions, his cheerful tone and pleasant mannerisms soon made her feel more at ease - especially since, by his own admission, she knew him to be the brother of the honorable curate. Consequently, she was able to respond to his request in what she fervently hoped was a helpful manner as she pointed out the correct path to Monkford.
After he politely thanked her and bade her farewell, Anne considered the matter and easily determined that she certainly would not be averse to meeting him again.
...
Thus, upon a common path, their journey began.
