"Why," panted d'Artagnan from the back of the group, "did I ever agree to go on a hiking holiday with you three?"
"Because you were bored," said Aramis, turning around and walking backwards up the steep path up the side of the mountain with seeming ease. "I quote 'I wish I could travel like you guys, the city is so boring'.
"And you wanted to show off to Constance," pointed out Porthos with a grin.
"When you said we were going to go on a walking holiday I expected to spend more time resting my feet in a 'quaint little country inn'," d'Artagnan moaned. "I didn't think you meant to spend the whole day walking! And mountains aren't supposed to be this big, this is the UK after all!"
"This is nothing," said Porthos. "It's only been three days. Aramis spent a few weeks walking the Camino de Santiago. He thought it would be a nice holiday after finishing university!"
"What, really?!"
Aramis grinned. Athos, who seemed to be saving his breath for the climb, not moaning about his life choices, just rolled his eyes and nodded.
"Come on, pup," said Porthos as he slung an arm around d'Artagnan's shoulders. "One more peak and we'll buy you an ice cream." D'Artagnan brightened considerably. Athos cleared his throat. "I'm sure we can find a pub too, Athos." He too brightened at the thought of something to look forward to at the end of the day.
Aramis laughed then tripped and fell backwards. Athos strode to his side, helping him up.
"Idiot," he muttered fondly. "Drink's on you tonight."
