A/N: This is a continuation of last year's "Ma'am this is a Starbucks"
Beca sat back in her cushy office chair and groaned. It had been an incredibly long day, in and out of studios, demanding artists who weren't as good as they thought they were, an infuriating boss that didn't seem to understand how time worked.
Somehow her dream of being a music producer wasn't as nice as it seemed six years ago. Sure she had money, fame, even a bit of influence in the entertainment industry. But really, at the end of the day she just felt hollow.
Standing up from her chair, Beca stretched to try and work a kink in her back. By happenstance her gaze fell on the small jewelry box she kept in her office for emergencies. Never knew when some self centered big wig might show up unannounced. She walked over to the box, opening it to look at the several thousand dollars worth of jewelry. But that wasn't what she was after, tucked away behind a hidden tray was the true prize.
Beca lifted the tray out of the box and pulled a small piece of paper from its hiding place. It wasn't much really, a simple thank you note for a free cup of coffee. Beca hadn't even thought that night was real, she had thought it was a dream. After all, there was no way a woman that beautiful really existed.
But the note she was holding proved that it had happened. And in the six years since Beca had been hoping against hope that they might meet again. She had tried to move on, dating various people, and even a short lived engagement, but she was haunted by otherworldly blue eyes.
She let out a long, mournful sigh before slipping the note into her back pocket. There wasn't anything she could do about it. Just to keep going.
An alarm sounded from her computer, a helpful reminder that it was time to go home. Beca quickly packed up her things, saving her work and turning off her computer. Experience had taught her to not stay at work too long, it was bad for her health but it also set a bad precedent for the people she worked with. She had to draw a line somewhere.
"Emily, time to head home." She said to her assistant, who happened to be as much a workaholic as she was. "Don't want to keep Benji waiting."
Emily blushed bright red. "I-I was going to go, !"
Beca chuckled at her friend's reaction. "I know you where, now go on," She gestured towards the door. "It's date night tonight right? Shouldn't skip that."
"How did you know?" Emily looked shocked.
"He sent me an email." Beca called over her shoulder as she headed for the door. "Wanted to make sure you remembered." It filled Beca with hope whenever she got to see a young couple in love, especially Emily and Benji. Those two made an adorably awkward pair.
She made her way to her car, some sort of sporty thing that she couldn't name. Her manager had suggested (ordered) her to get it, something about keeping up appearances. Another thing that Beca hated about this world.
The bright side was that the car had an amazing sound system.
Her phone connected automatically and she started a playlist before pulling out of the music studio's parking garage. It was a thirty minute drive to her house so Beca fell into a daze, letting her muscle memory take over and guide her home. About half way home her phone started buzzing, telling her that a call was coming in from Aubrey.
"What's up Bree?" She answered, paying more attention now that something had pulled her focus.
"I was just calling to check in." Aubrey sounded concerned. "You've been kinda down lately so I figured I'd make sure you're doing all right."
Beca raised an eyebrow but kept her eyes on the road. This definitely wasn't something Aubrey usually did, so either Beca was worse off than she originally thought or Aubrey had an ulterior motive. "I'm fine Aubrey. Just heading home, hoping to take a hot bath and drink some wine…how are you?"
This was awkward. Like, really awkward. Aubrey might be the closest thing she had to a best friend but they never really did this, they didn't make phone calls or check up on each other.
"I'm fine…there is something I wanted to ask you." Aubrey sounded very nervous, an emotion Beca was not used to hearing from her friend.
"Well spit it out, I'm almost home." Beca pulled on her street, glad to see her home pulling closer.
"I guess…well, I was wondering if I could have your permission to ask Stacie out."
That was unexpected. The last thing Beca thought she'd hear was for Aubrey to ask permission for something. Especially if that was to ask out Beca's ex-fiance.
"Are you still there Beca?" Aubrey sounded nervous, another thing that Beca thought she'd never hear.
"Yeah I'm here." She took a deep breath before pulling into her driveway. After parking her car she leaned back in her seat. "Look Aubrey, Stacie and I broke up like three years ago. I don't think I have a say in who she dates."
"Oh." Aubrey sounded relieved. "Okay, I just wanted to make sure. Didn't want to step on anyone's toes or have you find out through the media."
"It's fine Aubrey, I hope you two are happy." Beca hung up before Aubrey could say anything else. She didn't want to think about her best friend dating a former lover. That was just too much for her to process.
She made her way inside, tossing her keys and bag onto her kitchen island before moving to the fridge. Pulling out a beer, Beca flopped down on the couch and tried to think about how she could be so miserable and so successful at the same time.
And now she had to sit back and watch as another happy couple started a life together. She knew she sounded cynical and maybe she was, but any time she had tried to move on with her life she was haunted by blue eyes.
She wasn't sure when she'd fallen asleep but her house was completely dark. She sat up, struggling to see while she fumbled around to turn on the lamp next to her couch. Once the light flickered on Beca blinked a few times as she waited for her eyes to adjust.
Only to be met by a starling blue.
Otherworldly blue.
"Hello Beca."
Beca sat bolt upright, nearly falling off the couch as she scrambled backwards. Once she had time to recover she stared at the intruder. The same red hair, the same friendly smile, and the same blue eyes. It couldn't be.
"Chloe? How?"
"Shh." Chloe held a finger to her lips and smiled. "It seemed like you could use a friend."
"But," Beca stared in wonder. "Where did you go? What was that when you kissed me?" She took a close look at Chloe's face. "Who…what are you?"
Chloe just giggled, while her eyes literally shimmered in the light. Holding out a hand to the panicking woman in front of her. "I've come to see if you'd like to come with me this time. It seems like you could use a change of pace."
Beca stared at the outstretched hand. Her own fingers twitched, aching to reach out and grab on. "Where would you take me?" Chloe's smile grew wider as Beca grabbed her hand.
"To the stars." Chloe leaned in and kissed her on the lips. Beca felt a familiar pull as the world around her disappeared, to be replaced by a swirl of colors and stars.
Beca remembered this feeling, only this time it was better.
Because this time Chloe was with her.
A/N: Finally settled on alien.
