IN OUR PREVIOUS ADVENTURE...

Betrayed by her ex-boyfriend, Larry Nightingale, who is working with the Black Guardian, Sally Sparrow and her boyfriend, Vince Hawkins, found themselves trapped in another universe, the one known as E-Space. They then arrived on the former vampire planet that the Doctor and Romana had visited, and defeated the Three Who Rule, centuries before. Not long after, Vince and Sally found themselves battling a fourth vampire that the Doctor hadn't known about, called Floyd Tebbits.

Following Tebbits's defeat, the couple spent the next year on that planet, with newly found friends, until, one day, Captain Jack Harkness arrived to rescue them.

Our story picks up from there.

DEEP SPACE STATION L25: PRESENT TIME

With a grunt, Vince Hawkins found himself deposited in what look like a metal corridor. Looking around, he saw that his girlfriend, Sally Sparrow, had also arrived. "Sally, you okay?" Vince asked.

"I'm fine," Sally replied as she looked around. "Where are we?"

"Back in our own universe," the man, who had introduced himself as Captain Jack Harkness, replied.

"Are we?" Sally asked. She recalled Captain Jack's sudden appearance on the planet, where she and Vince had spent the last year. Captain Jack's announcement that he had come to rescue her and Vince, via what he called a space/time manipulator. Vince and Sally had just enough time for a hurried good-byes to the friends they had made on the planet, Tamor and his daughter, Mori, before Captain Jack had whisked them away.

"Yes, we made it back," Captain Jack assured them. "You must have felt it when we passed through the inter-dimensional barrier."

"I sure did," Vince said. "Quite a bump that was."

"But this isn't Earth," Sally said.

"No, it isn't. We're making a stop here at this space station first," Captain Jack replied.

"Why?"

"You'll see in a moment."

Meanwhile, Vince had been staring at Captain Jack. "I remember you. You were at Sarah Jane's funeral." Vince said.

"I was indeed, Mr. Hawkins," Captain Jack said. "Miss Smith was a friend of mine too, as well as yours." He paused and then added. Of course, we all have a mutual friend as well."

"The Doctor?" Sally asked.

"Yes, the Doctor. I had a new adventure with her too, a little while back."

"HER!" Vince and Sally said at once, both doing a double take as they did so.

"I love that reaction," Captain Jack said and snickered.

"I knew the Doctor could change form, but I didn't know that he... she..." Sally mumbled. She saw that Vince was just as amazed.

"Neither did I, until I saw her in her current form," Captain Jack replied. "Of course, I knew the Doctor years before. I travelled with him, when the Doctor, was still a him, for a time, and then, when I worked for Torchwood, we..."

"Torchwood!?" Vince exclaimed as he took a step back. "That lot in Southampton who froze me for over a hundred years. If Sally and LINDA hadn't found me, I'd be there still. You work for them!?" Vince gave Captain Jack a short account of is encounter with Torchwood Southampton, which Sally confirmed with her own account of how LINDA had discovered te frozen Vince at the long abandoned Torchwood Southampton base.

"I had noting to do with that, Mr. Hawkins, trust me," Captain Jack said. "If I ad known you were there, Mr. Hawkins..."

"Vince."

"Right, Vince," Captain Jack said and went on "Anyway, if I had known you were there, Vince, I would have freed you long ago."

"I believe you," Vince replied. He seems sincere.

"Southampton always tended to exceed their authority," Captain Jack continued. "In the end, it cost them their lives when they thought they could face Scaroth alone."

"What is a Scaroth anyway?" Sally asked.

"Not a what, a who." Captain Jack replied. "And it's a long story best saved for another occasion. Right now, we have other fish to fry."

"Right, well then, how did you know about us?" Vince asked. "I mean what happened to Sally and myself being dumped in that other universe. We had no time to tell anyone."

"LINDA tracked me down and asked me to find you two. A friend of your, a Doctor Anne Travers, saw you two get zapped out of our universe and contacted LINDA."

Good old Anne, Sally thought.

"Took me a while, and it did dovetail with another favour I was asked to do," Captain Jack said.

"What favour?" Vince asked.

"Follow me, and I'll show you," Captain Jack replied.

OOOOOOOOOO

Captain Jack led Vince and Sally into what appeared to be the space station canteen, were exotic foods, no doubt from many worlds, were served. The trio walked up to table, where a brown aired, middle aged woman, was seated. A woman both Vince and Sally recognized. "You were at Sarah Jane's funeral too," Vince said. "You're..." Vince searched for the name.

"I'm Nyssa," Nyssa said. "It's nice to see you both again."

"Yes, we spoke wit you and your wife..." Vince began.

"Tegan."

"Right, you and Tegan, at the funeral."

"But what are you doing here?" Sally asked Nyssa. "Why aren't you on Earth with Tegan? Did something happen to her?"

"In a way, yes. Or rather it started a long time ago," Nyssa said and began her story. During their travels with the Doctor, Tegan's mind had become infected by an evil entity called the Mara, which had nearly destroyed her. "The Mara originally infected Tegan on a planet called Deva Loka. Mind you, I missed most of that adventure."

"Huh?" Vince asked.

"Long story," Nyssa said. "Anyway, the Mara eventually moved on to someone else, but part of it remained in Tegan's mind. About a year later, from Tegan's point, that is, the Mara took control of Tegan again, and used her to bring us to Manussa, it's home world. After a harrowing adventure there, in which we almost didn't survive, the Mara was destroyed for good, or so we thought at the time."

"I'm guessing it wasn't," Sally said.

"No," Nyssa replied, shaking her head. "It's resurfaced in Tegan's mind again."

"After all this time?" Sally asked. "I mean how long as it been since your original encounter with this Mara thing?"

"Forty of your years," Nyssa replied. "However, not too long ago, Tegan began having nightmare, like the ones she'd had, prior to our adventure on Manussa. I needed to act, before the Mara gained a foothold. Through the group called LINDA, I was put in touch with Captain Jack, and he volunteered to help me find a cure for Tegan, after he had rescued the two of you from E-Space."

"E-Space? Is that where we were?" Sally asked.

"Yes, that's what it's called. My friend, Adric, another Companion of the Doctor that Tegan and I travelled with, came from there." A sad smile came over Nyssa's face. "I'll have to tell you about him sometime."

"I'm guessing that you want us to help you with Tegan?" Vince asked.

"Yes, if you don't mind. I mean you don't have to, of course. Neither of you are under any obligation."

"Not at all," Sally said as she exchanged glances with Vince. "Any friend of the Doctor's is a friend of ours."

"Amen," Vince added. "The Doctor is a good person. We'll be happy to help you in any way we can, Nyssa."

"Thank you both," Nyssa said as she stood up. "Captain Jack, if you will."

With that, Captain Jack activated his space/time manipulator and the four of them were whisked away from the space station.

OOOOOOOOOO

SERENITY: FORMER TRAKEN UNION

The four of them found themselves standing in what appeared to be a glade at night. "Where are we now?" Sally asked.

"There is no actual translation, so call it Serenity," Nyssa said. "The last surviving world of the Traken Union." She stopped for a moment and then added. "My home."

"What happened to the rest of this Union?" Vince asked.

"It was destroyed, due to the machinations of an evil Time Lord called the Master," Nyssa replied and then gestured to the sky. On one side, stars could be seen, while on the other side was only blackness, as far as the eye could see. "All the other worlds, including the one I was born on, are gone."

"I'm so sorry, Nyssa," Sally said soothingly. She tried to imagine how she would react if she had found out that Earth no longer existed and found that she couldn't.

"It's all right," Nyssa said. "I worked out my anger years ago, ironically due to someone very much like the Master. Another long story."

At that point, a bearded man walked up to the group. "Nyssa, daughter of Tremas, is that really you!?" he asked.

"Yes, it's me," Nyssa replied. "It's good to see you again, Luvic. It's been a long time."

"Yes, it has," the man said and then turned to Sally, Vince, and Captain Jack. "My name is Luvic, the current Keeper Of Traken."

OOOOOOOOOO

Luvic lead the group into what appeared to be an ornate palace. "Serenity was the outermost world in what was once the Traken Union," he explained to Vince, Sally, and Captain Jack. "When the blackness came, I was able to lead refugees here, where we joined the already existing Trakenite colony."

"And this blackness didn't consume this world as well?" Sally asked.

"No, I was able to use the Source, a power we Keepers could tap into, to keep the blackness at bay, until it just stopped."

Thanks to the Fourth Doctor, Nyssa thought. And it cost him that regeneration doing so.

"You saved this planet with this Source?" Vince asked Luvic.

"Yes, but as a result, the Source was destroyed," Luvic replied sadly. "But at least we, as a race, survived."

And I'm not the last of my race, Nyssa thought. It had been some years since she had learned of Serenity's existence, and had been relieved that the Trakenite race would go on. All that time I thought it would end with me. Now that worry is ended.

"So, why have you all come?" Luvic asked.

"I requested it," Nyssa said. "Because there might be something here I need."

"Which is?"

"A resonator. Do you have one?" Nyssa asked.

"I'm not sure," Luvic replied. "Let me check." With that, Luvic headed out of the room.

"What is this resonator thing?" Vince asked.

"Something that can allow one to enter the deepest mind of another," Nyssa replied. "It's my hope that I can use it to free Tegan of the Mara once and for all."

"And where do we fit in?" Sally asked.

"I'll need additional minds to help me," Nyssa said. "Of course, I can't force you to do this. You and Vince must decide for yourselves."

"I'm in," Vince said. "As we said, any friend of the Doctor's is a friend of ours. And I can tell you truly love Tegan."

"More than you know, Vince. She means as much to me as Sally does to you."

Strange that, in my time, such relationships were considered abnormal, and I didn't give it much thought otherwise. I've learned much since arriving in the 21st Century, Vince thought.

"And I'm in too," Sally added. "For pretty much the same reason that Vince is. If this Mara is as bad as you say it is, we'll be happy to help you get rid of it."

At that point, Luvic returned, holding what appeared to be a crystal helmet. "Here is the resonator," he said.

"Good, now all we need is to get it to Tegan," Nyssa said.

"On it right now, Nyssa." Captain Jack announced and activated the space/time manipulator. "Back in a moment."

OOOOOOOOOO

LONDON, EARTH

Tegan Jovanka stood in front of the mirror and stared defiantly into it. "No, you won't win. You won't have me again!"

My dear, I've had you for the last forty years, the voice of the Mara said from inside Tegan's head. You just didn't know it.

"Nyssa will come through. You'll see."

Your little Trakenite trollop? I doubt that.

Well, we'll see about..." Tegan began, but broke off as Captain Jack arrived. "You're back? Where's Nyssa?"

"I'm here to take you to her," Captain Jack replied.

"But I thought..."

"Never mind that now. Take my hand." Captain Jack extended out his right hand.

Slowly, Tegan took Captain Jack's hand, and was quickly whisked away from Earth.

OOOOOOOOOO

BACK ON SERENITY...

Vince, Sally, Nyssa, and Luvic watched as Captain Jack returned with Tegan. "Tegan!" Nyssa said and ran forward to embrace her wife. "Sorry that I've been away so long."

"I know, and understand, why," Tegan said as she returned the embrace.

"I hope the Mara hasn't caused too much trouble for you while I was gone."

"It has been annoying," Tegan replied. "But I've managed. And I wasn't idle, while you were away. I even had another adventure with the Doctor, who now female."

"WHAT!?" Nyssa said, doing a huge double take.

Welcome to the club, Sally thought. She looks just the way Vince I did, when Captain Jack told us about the Doctor becoming a woman.

"Believe me, Nyssa, I was as surprised as you are. I didn't know Time Lords could change sexes either." Tegan then looked around. "What is this place?"

"Serenity," Nyssa said and went on to explain about the planet.

"So you're not the last of your kind after all," Tegan said, once Nyssa had finished.

"No," Nyssa said and gestured to Luvic. "This is Luvic, the current Keeper."

"Pleased to meet you," Tegan said and shook Luvic's hand.

"And do you remember Sally Sparrow and Vince Hawkins?" Nyssa said and gestured to the couple.

"From Sarah Jane's funeral? Yes, I remember them." Tegan replied. "But what are they doing here?"

"We're here to help you, Tegan," Sally replied.

"Nyssa told us all about that Mara," Vince added. "Sounds evil."

"It is," Tegan replied "And it's been hiding inside my head for the last forty years. Of course, I didn't know that until recently."

"Well, if all goes well, you'll finally be rid of the Mara, Tegan," Nyssa said.

"We thought the same thing on Manussa. Turns out that all we did was put it to sleep for a few decades. How can you be sure of this, Nyssa?"

"Listen," Nyssa replied and went on to explain her plan.

OOOOOOOOOO

Soon after, Tegan was laying on some cushions, that had been placed on the floor. The crystal helmet was now adorning her head. "So, how does this resonating thing work exactly?" Tegan asked.

"In ancient times, it was used by Trakenite healers to cure mental patients," Nyssa replied. "It puts the patient into a light trance, which allowed the healer to enter the patient's mind and combat the illness directly."

"And you're going to do that with the Mara?"

"Yes, but I won't be alone," Nyssa replied and gestured to Sally and Vince. "They'll be coming too. The more strong minds that are involved, the better our chances."

"So, how does this work for us?" Vince asked.

"Well, first I activate the resonator." Nyssa placed her hand on the helmet and it began to softly glow.

"Hey, that feels nice," Tegan said in a dreamy voice.

"Just close your eyes and relax, Tegan," Nyssa said.

"Okay," Tegan replied and did so. Soon her breathing softened.

"She's in the trance," Nyssa said.

"Now what?" Sally asked.

"Lie down around Tegan, and place you hands on the helmet." With that, Nyssa lay down and placed her hand on the helmet. Soon she too appeared to go into a trance.

"When in Rome," Sally said and did the same, with Vince doing it seconds later.

All three were now in Tegan's mind.

OOOOOOOOOO

The four of them found themselves standing in what appeared to be a jungle. "Where are we now?" Sally asked.

"Deva Loka," Tegan replied. "The place were the Mara first infected me." She led them over to what appeared to be chimes, where a younger Tegan, clad in her old Air Australia outfit, appeared to be asleep. "Me, forty-one years ago," Tegan explained. "The chimes put me into a trance, which allowed the Mara to enter my mind."

"Uh, are we in any danger?" Vince asked.

"No, these are just memories," Nyssa replied. "We're not really here, of course."

Abruptly, the scene changed,, and the four found themselves in what appeared to be some kind of market place.

"Manussa, the Mara's home world," Nyssa said.

"You mean it had a culture of it's own?" Sally asked.

"No, rather the Mara was the accidental creation of the ancient Manussans, who were trying to tap the secrets of the mind. Something they cam to regret, as the Mara destroyed their entire civilization."

Rather like Frankenstein, Vince thought. As a child, Vince had read Mary Shelley's novel and remembered being terrified by the idea of a scientist's creation turning against its creator. Clearly, these Manussans learned the same terrible lesson that Victor Frankenstein had learned. Some things are better off left alone.

"This way," Tegan said and headed down the street, with the others following behind. Soon they came to what appeared to be some kind of fun house.

"In there?" Sally asked.

"In there," Tegan replied and went into the fun house.

"Come on, let's finish this once and for all," Nyssa said as she led Sally and Vince into the fun house after Tegan.

The four of them were soon wandering through what appeared to be a hall of mirrors. Just like it was on the real Manussa, forty years ago, Tegan thought.

"I don't like this," Sally said and wrapped er arms around herself. "It feels... wrong."

"I know," Vince said as he put a reassuring and on Sally's shoulder. "I'm thinking that we're getting close to where the Mara is."

"We are," Tegan said as she walked up to a large mirror. Reflected in the mirror was a image of her. However, the face on this image of Tegan smiled with malevolence. "Nyssa, Sally, Vince, meet the Mara."

"Well, well," the Mara replied, in a voice very much like Tegan's but with a slightly lower pitch. "I see you're brought some friends to play." The Mara glared at Nyssa. "The Trakenite trollop. I remember you."

"And you can't hurt me this time," Nyssa said. "My mind is prepared."

"I see that it is," the Mara replied and then fixed its gaze on Sally and Vince. "But I don't know either of you two."

"We're friends of Tegan," Sally said. "And we're going to help her get rid of you."

"Send you back to whatever Hell you came from," added Vince.

Te Mara threw back its head and laughed. "Well, aren't you two a pair. Well, let's see what fear I can get out of you both." The Mara raised its arms and Sally and Vince collapsed to te ground, writhing.

"What ave you done to them?" Tegan demanded.

"Just probing their pathetic minds for whatever horrors I can find," the Mara said. "Ahhhh, yes.."

OOOOOOOOOO

Sally Sparrow looks on in fear as the Weeping Angels surround her. She knows these malevolent beings, and what they can do. If she takes her eyes off any one of them for too long, said Angel could banish her to the past, like they did with her friend, Kathy Nightingale. The problem is that Sally cannot watch them all at once. "You're not real!" she says defiantly. "You not here!" But the Angels do not vanish. Sally feels the fear building inside and calls out, as loud as she can: "VINCE!"

Vince Hawkins looks on as Reuben Whormby shuffles towards him, that ghastly smile on his face. Vince knows when and where he is, the lamp room of the Fang Rock lighthouse, on that horrible night in 1902. Vince knows that what is approaching him is not really Reuben, but an alien, called a Rutan, that had assumed Reuben's form. "This isn't happening," Vince says as he slowly backs away from the menacing alien. "I'm not really here!" But that does not stop the Rutan from grabbing Vince, as it had done so, long ago, and shocking him with electricity. As Vince writhes as the electricity flows through him, he spots something. On the far side of the lamp room, a dark figure is standing. A dark figure with a sinister smile on its face. "No, this can't be! You can't be here! Not now!" Vince cries out: "SALLY!"

"Vince, I hear you!" Sally says and reaches out her hand, ignoring the Angels. "Take my hand, quickly!"

Vince hears Sally, and despite the Rutan's ongoing onslaught, reaches out his hand.

Sally feels her hand make contact with Vince's. She quickly grabs his hand.

And Vince does the same.

"I LOVE YOU!" both say at once. Everything vanishes.

OOOOOOOOOO

Nyssa and Tegan looked on with relief as Sally and Vince quickly sat up and got to their feet. "Are you both all right?" Nyssa asked.

"That thing tried to destroy us with fear," Sally replied. She took Vince's hand and smiled at him. "But we managed to fight back with love."

"Of course," Tegan said. "To a being like the Mara, love is poison!" She turned to Nyssa. "I love you so much, Nyssa. You give my life a meaning it never had before."

"And I love you, Tegan," Nyssa said. "Now, and forever!"

"No, stop!" the Mara howled. "I won't have this!"

"Vince..." Sally said.

"Sally..." Vince replied and, like Nyssa and Tegan, embraced in a passionate kiss.

"Uggggghh, you're poisoning me!" the Mara gasped.

That's the general idea, Sally thought.

"THIS CANNOT BE THE END!" the Mara shrieked as it began shrink in size. "THIS IS NOT THE END! THIS IS..." Still screaming, the Mara shrank away into nothingness.

"It is the end!" Nyssa said, smiling.

OOOOOOOOOO

Tegan opened her eyes and sat up. As she removed the resonator from her head, she saw that Nyssa, Sally and Vince were also sitting up. "It that it? Is it over?" Vince asked.

"Yes, the Mara is gone," Nyssa said. "Our love, boosted by the resonator, destroyed it."

"I hope so," Tegan said, but could not keep the doubt out of her voice. We thought it was destroyed on Manussa, forty years ago, after all. Guess all we can do now is stay vigilant and hope for the best.

As they got to their feet, the door opened and Luvic entered the room. "Were you successful?" he asked.

"We were," Nyssa replied as she took the resonator from Tegan and handed it back to Luvic, "Thank you."

Not long after, Sally, Vince, Nyssa, and Tegan were saying good-bye to Luvic. "You know, Nyssa, you can always stay here on Serenity with us," Luvic said. "You'll always have a home here.

"Thank you, Luvic, but my life is elsewhere now." She tuned and smiled at Tegan.

"I understand," Luvic smiled. "Best of luck to you all."

"And to you, Luvic," Nyssa replied, smiling.

Captain Jack once again activated the space/time manipulator as, as Luvic watched, the little group was whisked away. "Amazing," Luvic said to himself.

LONDON, EARTH

Te space/time manipulator deposited the group in the living room of Nyssa and Tegan's apartment. "Back home for you all," Captain Jack said and then turned to Sally and Vince. "Sorry to say that more than a year has passed here, since you both left."

"Yeah, I guess it would be too risky to take us back any earlier," Sally said. "Can't mess up the time line."

Guess our absence was noticed by too many during that year, Vince thought. Time travel can give one a headache at times!

"Well, I must be off. Places to go, people to see," Captain Jack said and then added. "Say, Sally, Vince, next time, how about a triple date?" Before either could reply, Captain Jack activated the space/time manipulator and once again vanished.

"What did he mean by that?" Vince asked.

"Believe me, Vince, you don't want to know," Sally said and laughed.

A short time later, the four of them were sitting on a couch in Nyssa and Tegan's living room. "I have good news," Sally said as she hung up the phone. "I just found out that LINDA covered the cost of our apartment, while we were away," she said to Vince.

"They did? For a whole year!? I mean I'm grateful we still have our home, but..."

"I guess they figured that, being part of the Doctor's world means that things like this will happen." Nyssa said.

"Yes, I suppose they will..." Vince said and trailed off.

"Vince, what is it?" Sally asked.

"It's something I saw, when the Mara was messing with my mind," Vince said. "It showed me the moment the Rutan attacked me, at Fang Rock, back in 1902. I noticed something, that being, that dark being whom Larry is working with, it was there that night!"

"Are you sure it wasn't a trick the Mara was playing on you?" Sally asked.

"No, Sally, it wasn't a trick. That dark being was there. I'm sure of it." Vince replied.

"Dark being?" Tegan asked.

"Yes," Sally replied and went on to tell Tegan and Nyssa about their encounter with said being and her former boyfriend, Larry, being associated with it.

"Sounds like the Black Guardian," Tegan said, once Sally had finished.

"The Black Guardian?" Vince asked.

"Yes, that's what it's called."

"You sound like you've seen it yourself, Tegan," Sally said.

"I have, during my travels with the Doctor." Tegan went on to describer her brief encounter with the Black Guardian, during their adventure with the Eternals. "Apparently, the Black Guardian is another enemy of the Doctor's. The Doctor beat him once. Mind you, this happened some time before I met the Doctor, but he told me all about it. And the Black Guardian never forgot that defeat." She looked at Vince. "Who was the Doctor travelling with at the time you first met him?"

"A woman called Leela," Vince replied. "Why?"

"Because the Doctor told me that is original encounter with the Black Guardian took place while he was travelling with a Companion named Romana, who joined him after Leela had left."

"But that means the Black Guardian was at the lighthouse before the Doctor actually met him for the first time," Vince said.

"Time travel, remember," Nyssa said. "The normal rules of Cause And Effect don't apply here."

"But what does this Black Guardian want with Larry?" Sally asked.

"And why was it present at the lighthouse when the Rutan attacked me?" Vince asked seconds later.

"I wish I could answer your questions," Tegan said and then thought. "However, my encounter with the Black Guardian was too brief for me to really know anything about him."

"Only that he's still out there, somewhere," Sally said with a shudder. And Larry is with him, doing God knows what.

"I know some people who could possibly help." Tegan said suddenly. "Mind you, I'm not sure what they can do in regards to the Black Guardian, but some of them might have some insight on the matter.

"That LINDA group?" Nyssa asked.

"I think this might even be beyond LINDA's scope," Sally said.

"No, not LINDA," Tegan replied and turned to Nyssa. "Of course, Nyssa, you wouldn't know about them either. It's pretty new. The group was formed wen all of you were away from the Earth."

"Then who are they?" Nyssa asked.

"You've got us curious too, Tegan," Vince added.

"Why don't I just show you all," Tegan replied. "Give me a few days to set up a meeting."

OOOOOOOOOO

A FEW DAYS LATER...

Sally and Vince met Nyssa and Tegan outside a building. "Well, here we are, Tegan." Vince said. "We're ready."

"This group inside?" Sally asked.

"Yes, follow me," Tegan said as she led Nyssa, Sally and Vince into the building. They soon arrived in a room full of people. Some of the people Sally and Vince remembered from Sarah Jane's funeral, while others were complete strangers.

"Nyssa of Traken, Sally Sparrow, Vince Hawkins," Tegan said. "Meet our group: Graham O'Brien, Dan Lewis, Yasmin Khan, Kate Stewart, Dorothy "Ace" McShane, Ian Chesterton, Jo Jones and Melanie Bush. All former Companions of the Doctor."

Well, this is unexpected, Vince thought as he exchanged glaces with Sally.

At that point, Ace got up and walked over to Nyssa, Sally, and Vince. "Welcome to our group," she said.

SALLY AND VINCE WILL RETURN!
