Vol.1. Chapter 1.1: A devil's arrival

[A/N I always had the impression that if the devil was real, he would have an accent like Lucifer Morningstar. So I gave Kiyo a European way of speaking, you will know what I mean when you read it]

-

It was Monday morning, the start of the week. I always feel so lethargic, but I have to go to school today.

My vision was blurry. I rubbed my eyes and yawned as I put on my slippers and went to the washroom to freshen up. After brushing and taking a shower, I headed toward my wardrobe.

The dorm apartment that I live in wasn't very big, but it was spacious enough for a single student like me. The kitchen was right next to the bedroom. Well, it had only one bedroom, one kitchen with a hall which was an extensive area.

I opened my wardrobe and took out my uniform. I wore a white shirt and put on my green pants. I tightened my red tie, but not too much. I always kept the top button open and wore the tie accordingly.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror. My messy brown hair was still wet and was falling into my eyes. I brushed them to the side with my left hand.

I checked the time; it was 7.30 am. I was late today, so I quickly took my bag.

As I unlocked my phone, there were 56 missed calls, 73 missed messages, and 12 voice mails. All from a single person.

Kushida

I grumbled and went to open my front door, and sure enough, there sat Kushida, resting against the door, clearly waiting for me. God alone knows how long.

''Kushida, to what do I owe this displeasure?''

''Does it kill you to answer your phone? Never mind, do you even know what Horikita's been up to behind your back?''

''I'm aware, yes.''

''H-Huh, you know?!''

Kushida got up and entered my room, this isn't the first time she's here, so she's used to it.

''Evidently, Ryueen is conspiring against her. So, knowing our ice princess, this was a mission to silence and slaughter him; or at least try to. I should probably bring popcorn to watch her eventual fail.''

''You don't suppose Ryueen found a way to expel her once and for all, do you?''

Even though Kushida asked curiously, she was hoping for the answer to be 'yes'.

''Come now, I was under the impression that the three of us get along pretty well.''

''What? We are 3 distrustful acquaintances who happen to share the same class. I for one hope they've found a way to make that fucking bitch rot.''

''Kushida, I adore your other side, but you might wanna dial down your glee.''

I was staring at myself through the desk mirror, casually fixing the front bangs on my hair. Giving myself one last look, I headed out the door, my red blazer around my shoulder.

''Where are you going?'' Kushida asked, making me come to a halt.

I stood still while I enjoyed the morning scenery outside my dorm door, my back to Kushida. Birds chirping happily on the trees, and the sky was clear blue. A perfect day, if I say so myself.

''To find out who's making a move against our precious class, and then...''

I tilted my head towards Kushida, making proper eye contact. Despite my eyes being icy cold, there was undeniable amusement dancing in them.

''I'll either stop them, or I'll help them. Depending on my mood.''

I left Kushida behind without waiting for her response.

[Location: School Bus]

My name is Kiyotaka Ayanokouji.

I'm 16 years old.

I am a normal run-of-the-mill high schoolboy, you can find anywhere. There is absolutely nothing intriguing about me. Although you could say I'm going through my rebellious phase. but what teenager doesn't?

I'm on my way to my new school, which could be termed my temporary home since I'll be there for the next three years.

My ears were captivated by the music from my EarPods as my back relaxed against the semi-comfortable bus seat. There is only one piece of music on the device, 'Laughing on the Outside by Bernadette Carroll.' And it's been playing on repeat since my journey began. The lyrics, tempo, and pace are all perfectly memorized in my head.

I'm laughing on the outside

Crying on the inside

'Cause I'm so in love

With you

I couldn't help but hum the lyrics quietly. I stretched my arms like a sleepy cat and glanced to my right, only to find a beautiful young lady with raven hair seated next to me. She emanated maturity, and if she hadn't been wearing the same uniform as myself, I might have mistaken her for a college student.

Compared to everyone else on the bus, she definitely stands out. There was also that blonde guy chilling in the priority seats who stood out, but he was too far away for me to have a proper conversation.

Taking the ear pods away from my ears, I turned to talk to her.

''Hey there. Wanna chit-chat to pass the time?''

Black hair looked at me from the corner of her eyes, her face was perfectly sculptured. I could see the gears turning in her head, perhaps wondering why I was even bothering to converse with her.

But she ultimately decided to ignore me. How predictable.

''I have nothing to say to you,'' she scoffed.

''Oh, now that's not very amiable, is it? You don't even know me.''

''I don't even need to look at you to know I won't like you.'' She replied coldly.

Despite her harsh words, I remain unfazed, in fact, I found myself being more drawn toward her.

''You are a natural heart breaker with a sharp tongue like that, love.''

Her eyebrows suddenly twitched, confusion spread over her face. She lowered her book and looked at me face to face for the first time.

'' Love? Are you a foreigner? You don't look like one tho. What's with your way of talking?''

''Mmm, you are not wrong I suppose. I lived here my entire life, but this is the first time I'm seeing everything with my own bare eyes. So you might as well say I'm a foreigner, but that's a long story for another time.''

As much as I took a fancy to her, I was not willing to share my delicate past with anyone.

Before our conversation could continue, a ruckus started brewing in front of him. A petty argument, apparently, to get that same blonde guy out of the priority seats to make room for the old lady standing. I didn't give it a second thought; common people's troubles rarely hold my attention.

It's a good thing that my neighbor was choosing to ignore the situation as well.

''Hey black hair, let's swap stories with each other.''

''Not interested.''

''Well, that's too bad, cause I'm in the mood for a story. Don't worry I will start.''

In an attempt to discourage me, the girl grumbled angrily and continued reading her book. Of course, I'm still going to tell her; after all, I want an outsider's perspective on it, and who better than the raven-haired princess next to me?

''When I was young, my father sort of forced me to join a... temporary class under the wing of a world-renowned martial arts master. Naturally, I had zero interest in it, but my father, he wouldn't take no for an answer. Sounds like an asshole right?''

''I don't care, stop talking,'' she muttered in an annoyed tone.

"I wasn't the only one; there were other youngsters who were forced to learn it as well. Classes continued as usual, and they lasted a month. So the master decided to give his students one last test to assess how far they had progressed. 1v1 with the master himself. Everything happened as expected, with the martial artist easily defeating each and every one of his students. It's hardly shocking, after all, he has decades of experience."

Black hair tried to bury her face with her book to stop listening, however, I didn't mind her behavior.

''However that all changed when he faced his final student. Care to guess what happened next?''

''Let me guess, the student won? How original. Are you telling me the plot to the next karate kid or something?'' She said in a sarcastic tone.

However, I was glad to see her finally taking part in the conversation.

"He didn't simply win; he dominated him. The martial artist had no chance. The final student forced him into a corner with pure force and brutality until he gave up... But the student didn't stop there; no, no, no, he continued to kick and bash him even though the match was over long ago."

I paused for a few seconds before continuing.

''Whаt роѕѕеѕѕed thе boy to kiсk thе master, even though the match was over? Whаt fееlingѕ did he rеlеаѕе at thаt mоmеnt whеn thе master begged and howled in раin and fright? Whу does he look so satisfied and wish furthеr harm to thе master and enjoy thе ѕight of а human in раin?''

I caught a glimpse of black hair, and she had her book down on her lap, completely engrossed in my story. When she realized I was observing her, she returned to her book and resumed reading.

If I could, I probably would've chuckled at her behavior.

"The onlookers were outraged by his behavior and felt pity for the defenseless master whom this student had treated with such cruelty and without remorse. Why do you think the boy did what he did?''

I turned to the girl, wanting her input. And to my delight, she answered.

''He probably had a grudge against the master.''

''A grudge? I don't think so, the boy didn't have a single shred of emotion on his face while he was doing it. Try again.''

Black hair pondered for a while, obviously giving it some thought.

''I suppose he was fruѕtrаtеd bу society thаt реnѕ his еxiѕtеnсе, and just wanted to let it all out. Wе аll lоѕе our ѕеnѕе оf psychological саlm аnd rаtiоnаl thoughts when wе grаррlе with life's unfаirnеѕѕ оr lack оf орроrtunitу.''

Black hair replied with a completely logical answer, as expected of a lady who seemed as noble and elegant as her. Sadly, she's nowhere close.

''Ah but that's the thing, this boy was the only son of a wealthy family, has all hiѕ nееdѕ fulfilled, and even before he was born, his future was decided. Yеt ѕtill fееlѕ grеаt dеlight in kiсking and wаtсhing thе man ѕuffеr аt hiѕ hаndѕ.''

I watched as her's eyes widen slightly.

''A sense оf роwеr аt hiѕ аbilitу tо inflict раin аnd thе pleasure аt feeling ѕuреriоr tо other lеѕѕеr humans whоm hе sees as inсараblе of tаking whаt they want and ѕо he takes what they cannot.''

''Sounds like a psychopath to me.'' Black hair was already packing her book inside her bag, we must be close to our destination.

''Indeed,'' I nodded. ''But it's understandable, thiѕ ѕuреriоr positional thinking lеаdѕ to a lасk оf ѕуmраthу or еmраthу fоr оthеrѕ. Say, if you ever had the luxury of meeting someone like that, what would you do?''

I patiently waited for her response. She seemed to struggle to come up with the words and just when I thought she was about to say something, the bus came to a halt.

With a quick glance out the window, you can see that we've arrived at our school. I looked forward, and the priority seat issue was most likely resolved during my conversation.

My neighbor had already exited the bus without waiting for me. How typical.

I chased after her.

"What's your name, black hair?"

She came to a stop, her long hair blowing in the breeze and pink sakura blossoms falling behind her. All of these combined to form a surreal scene. Something photo-graph worthy.

''It's Horikita. Suzune Horikita.'' She said without turning around.

''Mines, Kiyotaka Ayanokouji.''

She nodded before walking away.

While first-year students entered the gate around me, I stood there stretching my arms and staring at the sky.

All of humаnitу hаѕ thiѕ роtеntiаl to viсtimizе оthеr humаnѕ аnd living creatures. Whilе mаnу rеѕtrаin or ѕublimаtе thiѕ tеndеnсу, ѕоmе асt upon thеѕе imрulѕеѕ.

In human psychology, it is assumed that all сriminаl, dеviаnt аnd abusive behaviors are рurроѕivе аnd have some rаtiоnаl, gоаl оriеntеd motivation 99% оf thе timе.

It is thе rеmаining 1%, that I am interested in. In theory, thеrе iѕ a rеgiоn within thе human рѕусhе that еnаblеѕ ѕоmе реорlе tо соmmit аtrосiоuѕ асtѕ without рurроѕе.

I came here to ѕееk tо understand thоѕе thоughtѕ, fееlingѕ, реrсерtiоnѕ of mine that lеаd to... predatory bеhаviоr that iѕ frowned upon by society.

I watched Horikita's back shrink more and more as she walked away, I suddenly realized I had forgotten to tell her the entire story.

Or, more accurately, I left it out on purpose.

After all...

the boy in the story...

The boy who damaged the world-renowned martial artist's brilliant future by fracturing his bones to the point of permanent damage, ensuring he can never raise a finger ever again...

was me.

Sadly, that 'martial artist' was not my first nor my last victim.

I doubt that would change anytime soon.

I entered the school gates while reminiscing about the past.

And now, that same boy with the stone-cold heart has discovered a new playground to entertain himself.

Vol.1. Chapter 1.2: Corrupting Kushida

[A/N Just a fair warning, this chapter contains emotional manipulation]

-

[Kiyotaka POV]

[Location: Class D]

I took a step toward the seat with my nameplate. It was near the window in the back of the room. In general, a good spot to sit. Looking around, the classroom appeared to be about 60% full.

I ran my fingers over the hard surface of my table before inspecting my fingers; thankfully, there wasn't even a trace of dust.

Feeling satisfied I took my seat.

Right before I thought of taking my EarPods out to listen to some music, a girl sat beside me.

Oh, I remember her. Or rather, it's hard to forget her. The girl simply sat upright after placing her bag on her desk. She gave me the impression of a hard-to approach honor student.

"Well, this is a pleasant surprise. Fancy meeting you here, Suzune."

''I don't recall giving you permission to use my first name.'' Suzune spat out.

Now that I got a good look at her face, she was certainly more beautiful than I gave her credit for. If anyone tells me that she was a year or two older, I'd probably believe them. She gives off the vibe of a cool beauty.

''Aww, but we are in the same class. Plus we are neighbors. Don't you think we can be close now?''

''Are you delusional?''

''You treat me like trash, Suzune. I'm kinda offended.'' I replied in a sarcastic tone.

''I don't think you're trash. You are more like the... bacteria that grows in molded cheese.''

''Sorry, but I am diagnosed with 'IDGAF'. It stands for I don't give a f*k. By the way, I wanna explore the school after class, see all the shops, cafes and whatnot. I want some fresh visual stimulation. Care to join me?''

''No. It'll be stupid and lame.''

''True. But it'll be less stupid and lame if you were there.''

She paused for a second to stare at me. After a short moment, she sighed and ignored me.

-

"Ahem. Good morning to you, students. I'm the instructor for Class D. My name is Chabashira Sae. I usually teach Japanese History. However, at this school, we do not change classrooms for each grade. For the next three years, I will be acting as your homeroom teacher, so I hope to get to know all of you. It's a pleasure to meet you," she announced.

Her suit made her seem like a hard to approach beauty, and most normal people would feel overwhelmed by her. However, her confidence as a teacher made her mannerisms feel strangely gentle.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing School differed from other Japanese high schools in a few key ways. All students are required to live in dormitories located within the school's premises. Also, students were forbidden to contact anyone outside the school. Naturally, leaving the school grounds without permission was also strictly forbidden.

On the other hand, the campus is equipped with many excellent facilities. With its own karaoke spot, theater, cafe, boutique, and more, you could easily compare this school to a small city, being more than 600,000 square meters in size.

This school also boasted another unique feature: The S System.

This was my first time touching on academics as an ordinary student.

After I'd left the white room. I'd temporarily lived in a mansion so large you could get lost in it, and all my teaching came from a not-so-legal facility.

I had no school friends, no seniors or juniors to speak of.

In all honesty, sitting here in a classroom and learning alongside others was so moving that I didn't quite know how to describe the feeling.

Chabishira sensei went on to explain the rules.

Teaching is more or less brainwashing. Or, in more polite terms, imprinting.

People aren't equal.

An animal's nature is influenced by its surroundings. A creature in a cold climate would eventually grow accustomed to it, and so would one in a desert. The tendency built up over time would then be genetically passed on to the next generation.

Education was an efficient means of imparting knowledge that the government deemed appropriate. Because young, impressionable minds were so vulnerable to them, they had the potential to influence their entire lives.

However, school aside, my attention was elsewhere.

I was really more interested in the bright girl at the front of the class than in the lesson's subject or the school's goals.

Her back was to me, but she had short beige-colored hair. I did get a good look at her face before, attractive features paired with gradient crimson eyes. She has a well-endowed figure and an average height.

We haven't officially met, but I did see her on the bus.

I have a good feeling about her.

''You know your intentions are clear as day.'' Horikita sighed beside me.

''Is it now, I thought I was being pretty subtle about it.''

''You have been staring at her since class started. It's honestly creepy. Do such activities when you are not in my presence.''

''I wonder? Maybe it's love at first sight.'' I said sarcastically. ''But I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested in her. She's definitely what I've been looking for.''

''What's that supposed to mean?''

''Who knows?'' I shrugged my shoulders.

[Kushida POV]

[After school]

[Location: Hallways]

-

What kind of person do I wish to be?

It's a rather generic question. Everyone has the occasional dream of how they would like to shine sometime in the future.

Everyone can dream, but reality is incredibly harsh.

The tale of the turtle who won a race against a sleeping hare is actually undeniable proof that the turtle couldn't win under normal circumstances.

I too thought I was special until I got a dose of reality. So if I can't be the best in academics or the best in sports, I simply have to excel in something everyone struggles with.

Being a nice person.

That's why I, Kikyou Kushida, will head higher and look even further ahead.

There's no point in turning back.

I will ardently head nowhere else but forward, never stopping to look behind me.

That is the person I want to be even now.

And I'm sure that I can catch up with anything.

Time is my ally.

The seasons shall change. The sharpened shall dull. And words taken to heart shall be forgotten.

That is the endless loop everyone calls "change."

And as one who can't change, I shall simply keep walking forward.

-

--

-

I walked down the empty corridors toward my dorms after collecting phone numbers from the last of the girls.

''...You're interesting.''

Suddenly...I heard a voice. A familiar one.
I turned toward the voice.
I never felt his presence, it's like he showed up out of nowhere.

Standing beside me was a fellow classmate.
Medium brown hair and enticing yellow eyes...he's wearing the boy's crimson uniform.
He's good looking but he has a cold expression.
If I recall...his name was...

''I'm Kiyotaka Ayanokouji, but you can call me Kiyotaka when it's just the two of us. I'm the guy that sits by the window.''

''Don't worry I remember you. You're kinda hard to miss. heh.''

I was gonna ask for his contacts sooner or later, so it might as well be now. I really don't wanna talk to him more than necessary. He's very... odd.

''I must say, you are quite the hero, Kushida. It's unbelievably rare to find people like you. So I'm glad we are in the same class. Consider me a fan.''

Despite his polite words, every syllable that came out of his mouth lacked emotion. I couldn't stop staring into his eyes when he spoke. It threatened to engulf me.

''I'm s-sorry, I'm not quite following.''

''Ah, my apologies, we met before, on the bus. I couldn't help but admire your noble efforts to help that poor old lady. Honestly, it should be everyone's duty to take care of the elderly, such a sad world we live in.''

''It's not a big deal, I'm sure anyone else would've done what I did if they were in my shoes.''

''But that's the thing, no one did. You, on the other hand, rose up without hesitation. Even I, regretfully couldn't come to poor granny's aid.''

I tilted my face with a smile, and let out my tongue in a playful manner. It's a deliberate action, it usually gets the other party flustered, especially if they are boys. However, there was no change in Ayanokouji.

That sight annoyed me, but I didn't show it. I needed to stop looking at him in general.

''Aa...no worries, is there something you need from me?''

I want to get out of here as soon as possible, but I can't just blow him off. That would be rude, and my consciousness won't allow that.

''Yes, how perceptive of you. You see, I am interested in deviants like you.''

Deviants?

''M...Me?''

''That's right, you. The miserable woman who can't defy her own desires.''

''H-Huh?''

''What? You're saying I'm wrong? Are you going to insist that you're a decent woman?''

The conversation took a rapid shift in a direction I wasn't expecting. Is he implying what I think he's implying? Now that I think about it, he sits next to that harpy, that bitch better not have spilled anything.

Suddenly, he was right in front of me again. So close that his toes almost touched mine. I sucked in a sharp breath, wanting to back up. He needed to stop doing that, showing up out of nowhere.

''No need to be shy, I know it...everything in your mind...''

I felt a chill on my back.

Oh... This is the type of person that clutches and grinds hearts.

He was the type of boy who shatters hearts and leaves a long line of them in his wake. He is a nuisance. He may be a fun kind of trouble, but he is still trouble.

''Wh...what do you mean?''

His cold hands... softly caressed my cheeks.

''So does it ever get suffocating? Always trying so hard to get close with everyone. Anyone can see that you're exhausted so why not relax for once.''

He watched me like a hawk, waiting for the rabbit to come out of its hole.

His speech which made no sense, caused high tension to wrap around my body.

I...I want to get out of this situation.

''Ayanokouji, I believe you got the wrong person. I have no clue what you are talking about."

I said the first thing that came to mind. Probably not the smartest, and normally I wasn't the type of person to fire right back, but this guy got under my skin and made me seered.

''Perfect acting as always Kushida, honestly, with your skills you should try your luck in Hollywood. I can already see a promising future ahead of you.''

''It's getting pretty late... so I should go now...''

I pushed past him and started rapidly walking away, normally I would never do anything that would make someone dislike me, no matter how big of a loser he/she is... but this is an exception.

Every hair in my body was standing up. Every instinct in my body was in flight mode. This guy, he's...dangerous.

I gasped when I crashed into something, or rather someone.

One second he was standing behind me and the next he was right in front of me. And I mean, right in front of me. He couldn't have moved that fast. It was impossible. But there he was, towering over me and staring down.

''How...how did you move...?''

''Hush now.'' He placed his forefingers against my lips. ''So Kushida, what's it like to wake up every morning knowing full well that your entire life is a lie. Like a pathetic turtle, you hide behind the tough shell of your 'nice girl' persona. But why? Why would you subject yourself to such a thing?''

Ayanokouji seemed to ponder for a sec before bringing his face close.

"You want it, don't you? You crave their undivided attention, their unwavering affection for you, and you dance in ecstasy when they sing praises your way. You are hopelessly addicted to it, like a powerful drug rushing through your veins."

''But who could blame you, without that fake personality of yours, you are nothing. Just another average student in a world of average.''

I took a step back, words failing me. The intensity in his eyes sent shivers down my arms. Holy crap...

"Listen closely," he said, taking a step forward.

I took one back, and he matched my steps until my back bit into one of the hallway walls. Ayanokouji bent his head down, his unnatural yellow eyes taking up my whole world. Heat rolled off his body.

''Here's how things are going to go. You'll go about your business as usual. Make new friends, just like you always did. Help others like you always did. You are going to be popular, very popular. Boys will have crushes on you, and girls will aspire to be like you. Knowing that alone, is enough to send you to cloud nine.''

"And even after you graduate, many of them will stay in touch with you. That's how much influence you'd have on them. With your charisma and social abilities, you'll be able to find a nice high-paying job in no time. Some way along the line you would decide to settle down, shouldn't be too hard. I'm sure guys would line up just to be with you, like moths to a lamp.''

''You'll meet the perfect guy, enjoy the perfect life, and have the perfect family. But, Kushida, no matter how lovely, no matter how fairy-like your existence is, it will pale in comparison to the painful loneliness you will experience. Because your husband, children, friends, and family will never love or accept you for who you truly are; they will only love the illusion of you.''

''What a sad and pathetic woman you are-''

''You, the real you is destined to die alone''

I felt my eyes sting and my vision blur, as his barrage of cruel words continued.

He stopped, taking a deep breath as his gaze dropped to my parted lips. My breath caught.

"I just believe you're being a little unreasonable. You appear exhausted, desperately concealing yourself behind a mask in front of everyone. To avoid becoming despised, you try to treat everyone equally. The girl who strives to be everyone's friend yet has no true friends of her own. Such irony."

My shoulders slumped down at his words. My eyes widened as I was a bit surprised. I probably need time to digest the meaning behind his words.

''Do you paint? Well, I guess not. But did you know every artwork has a story to tell? And what do you suppose your story is? Mmm... Let me guess. You wish you could control your demons instead of being controlled by them. You are lost. Forever alone.''

''You cannot, however, change. Because that would involve confronting your dark side. It means embracing yourself for who you are. And you'd never do something like that. No, no, no. After all, no one despises you more than you despise yourself.''

He's telling me things that I already know... so why... why are his words cutting me like knives.

One of the stupidest pieces of advice somebody can ever give you is to "be yourself."

Ayanokouji's not wrong; I'm addicted to everyone's trust, the moment they tell me their deepest secrets, it sends a rush of dopamine to my brain. And the only way I know how to satisfy that state is by being what I am.

So who cares if I'm not accepted.

Who cares if I'm not loved...

Who cares if I would die alone...

I'm h-happy the w-way I am...

...right?...

...

"But that's where I come in, Kushida, in your story."

W-What...

"You see, even if the rest of the world abandons you, I won't. I will help you and will be there for you. I will listen to all of your problems, no matter how minor. I will accept you, all of you.''

What is he saying?...

My eyes are glistening, as large droplets of tears formed around their edges.

The boy in front of me, who was breaking my heart piece by piece, suddenly started gluing it back together.

''It's a trick, you are tricking me, aren't you.'' I bristled and tilted my head back but focused my gaze over his shoulder.

''No, Kushida. It's my gift to you. And it's your chance-- All you have to do is reach out and grasp it.''

We were close, very close, to the point where we could feel each other's breath. He used his thumb to wipe away my tears.

Something flickered in his eyes, but they narrowed again, hiding whatever had been there. The images were back. The two of us. Hot and sweaty. I bit my lip and tried to make my expression blank, but yet again I knew he could tell what I was thinking when he raised an eyebrow. Beyond annoying.

My throat felt dry ''A-And why should I believe you?''

I started to respond but made the mistake of looking into his eyes. I was immediately snared by the unnatural color, reminded of the purest, deepest parts of the Everglades.

''Because Kushida...It's something only I'm capable of doing.'' He picked up a loose section of hair that had escaped my clip, twirling the hair around his finger. ''After all, No matter how vile, disgusting, putrid, and black your heart is... it's nothing when compared to mine.''

I already lost my fear of him for a while now, replaced by... something I didn't know I could feel.

''W-Who are you.''

His cold hands cupped my cheeks, yet I felt some warmth in them. My heart was pounding.

''You already know it, don't you?... I'm the villain of this story.''

Oh...Right.
Those eyes...This face.
This person's a devil.
I felt that for some reason.

The cold hand of the devil is grasping my heart firmly. Invisible chains hold me in place, threatening to pull me in. No, I already have been pulled in.

''You have potential Kushida, far more than you think. And I want that for myself. Selfish I know. But from this day onwards you are mine and mine alone.''

His face...Is beautiful, cold, and insane. His eyes are gleaming like gold. He curled his fingers around the back of my neck, gently, before bringing me in for a hug.

''And in return... you will get what you always secretly wanted, a friend, a true companion, someone who will accept you for who you truly are. Without ever judging you.''

My memory was flying all over the place after that. The last thing I remember is silently sobbing in his chest and wrapping my arms around him.

I can't remember what happens next.
I thought I just saw a dream but, my heart aches terribly.
The pain in my chest informs me that the conversation with Ayanokouji isn't a dream.

[Ayanokouji POV]

[Location: Class D]

''Hey Suzune, do you know what's the best way to control a human?''

''I thought I told you not to call me that!'' She gave me one of her icy glares, before sighing in defeat.

Perhaps realizing that I won't leave her alone, she decided to give me a reply.

''Ugh... fear?''

''No dummy, it's LOVE.'' I rolled my eyes.

The last period has already concluded, and Chabishira sensei has left. Class D students were gathering their belongings to return home.

"While fear is effective, it is not sustainable in the long run. Throughout history, we have seen innumerable dictators fall, tyrants betrayed by their closest allies, and several civil wars and revolutions."

I looked around the room till I came to a stop. Kushida and a couple of other girls were cheerfully conversing as they prepared to go home.

''But why... love?'' Horikita tilted her head.

"A soldier who takes up a weapon to defend his nation, a father who works day and night to provide for his family, a mother who foregoes her own meal to feed her starving child. Love is a powerful drive, but it is also an unreasonable thing. Completely illogical."

Maybe realizing my gaze, Kushida turned back and our eyes met. But that only lasted for a second, cause she immediately looked away.

''At the end of the day, you can't win against love no matter how hard you try. Many have tried and they all failed. You are nothing but a slave to it.''

I saw Kushida leave, her cheeks rosy red.

Vol.1. Chapter 1.3: Lunch date

[A/N This is a pretty tame chapter, but it's necessary to progress the story]

-

[ Kiyotaka POV]

[Location- Class D]

''This school is far too lenient on its students, it's honestly pathetic.''

Horikita stared at the whiteboard while Hoshinomiyasensei continued to write math formulas with a black marker. The class, on the other hand, was divided into those who were paying attention and those who preferred to rather chitchat or sleep.

''Uh-huh,'' I muttered, clearly not paying attention to the class as well. I was scribbling in my notepad with colorful sharpies, drawing doodles. Most were inanimate objects, such as a coffee cup with two cartoon eyes, while others resembled chibi-style portraits of everyone in the class, including one of Horikita.

''What the hell are you doing?'' Horikita glared at my artwork.

"I mean, it's not like taking notes in class is compulsory; I'm simply passing the time." I shrugged my shoulders.

I didn't fail to notice Horikita's eyes twitching at my response. ''This has to be a joke. How are you the top student, when you have an attitude like that.''

My sharpie stopped coloring the eyes of Chibi Horikita. I sighed as I remembered what happened exactly an hour ago.

[Flashback: 1 hour ago]

[Location: Class D]

Chabashira-sensei was explaining Japanese history, starting from the endo period. I yawned to escape my drowsiness. Class lessons are such a complete waste of time for me.

Suddenly there were two knocks at the entrance before a man slid the door open and gracefully walked in. He had a kind smile on his face. The unknown man stood behind the podium, while Chabishira sensei respectively stepped aside. He must be her superior.

''Goodmorning children, I amMr. Sakayanagi , the chairman of this fine school.

Mr. Sakayanagi appeared to be a man in his forties. I couldn't help but see his eyes gleaming with pride. He must be really passionate about his work. The man swept the room until his gaze was drawn to me, and for some reason, I had the impression he knew who I was.

''Now, normally I never take part or make speeches to a specific class, however, today marks history for this school, and I had to come here to acknowledge it myself.''

"We the higher-ups of Advanced Nurturing High School would like to congratulate Kiyotaka Ayanokouji of class 1-D for being the top scorer of the entrance examinations in our respected school's history. With perfect scores of 100 in every subject. This is a genuinely fantastic accomplishment that has been achieved. Let us applaud him for what he has pulled off."

The chairman announced while clapping his hands.

And so my tranquil period of sketching doddles was disrupted. Other people were clapping and searching around to see who the student named Ayanokouji Kiyotaka was. I also noticed people I was acquainted with, staring at me with astonished expressions, and some with respect and admiration.

Chabishira sensei smirked in my direction, while clapping softly.

Horikita appeared in the corner of my vision, looking at me with a shocked expression and a little bit of respect? Like she's noticing me for the first time.

I pretended to be unconcerned and ignored the stares from my classmates.

-

-

''I can't fathom that this is supposed to be the most prestigious school out there. Just look at the amount of disruption and tardiness the teachers are willing to overlook.''

''Oh, are we still talking about that,'' I sighed.

''Of course, we are still talking about that,'' Horikita scoffed. ''How can a school promise a bright future, if this is their education standards--''

I silently put on both my noise-canceling AirPods, and set the music volume to max.

I don't hate Horikita but I don't really like her either, which was one of the most socially normal things about me—nobody really liked Horikita.

She was cold and snappy. More than that, she had a brash, grating attitude, and she would speak her mind regardless of others' feelings.

In other words, she acted like the bullies, but without any of the strength or charisma to back it up. This all suited mefine, because she had the one quality I most desired in a school acquaintance—she likes to listen, and didn't much care if I paid attention to her or not.

I noticed her stop talking, maybe she saw the AirPods.

I could feel her staring at me so intensely that it could be mistaken for a glare. Was she upset with me or something? But, based on the expression on her face, she didn't appear to be angry. She'd undoubtedly want to talk to me later, so I ignored her for the time being.

-

-

Just as class ended, I stretched my arms.

Okay, everyone should be heading to the cafeteria for lunch, but for my little investigation today, I'm going to need a cute social gal.

While Chabashira-sensei was explaining the points yesterday, the only people who appeared to be suspicious were me, Horikita, Koenji, and a girl named Matsushita Chiaki.

I would have invited Horikita to join me for lunch, but based on our previous exchanges, she does not plan to get along with anyone, so I am forced to ask my prisoner.

While everyone was getting up to go to lunch, I strolled up to Kushida's already formed friend group. Which was impressive given the short period of time. As expected of her, building such a close-knit group so fast.

"There's my girl," I called out to Kushida while waving my right hand. She seemed caught off guard when she saw me. My eyes then flickered to the three other girls as they stood there in shock. "Or should I say girls?"

I believe their names were Mei-Yu Wang, Kokoro Inugashira, Kayano Onodera.

"Huh!" Kushida steps back.

''Relax, I was just joking around. It seems humor is not one of my strong points. And that's precisely why I must master it.''

''Wait, arent you the guy that got the full marks in everything?''

''A-Ayanokouji r-right?''

''Yeah, the one and only. But let's talk about that some other time, I'm sure we will get plenty of opportunities. Right now I'm in need of your little blonde friend here. You ladies wouldn't mind if I borrow Kushida for a bit, would you?''

''Uh...''

''Great. I'm glad we are in the same page.'' I looked at my wrist-watch to check the time. ''Let's get going, time waits for no one.''

I gripped her forearm and led her away, before pausing and looking back. The three girls seemed to be muttering and whispering something among themselves while looking at us.

''Just to be clear, to avoid any misunderstanding. Me and Kushida, we are not dating. Although it may seem like it, there is absolutely nothing going on between us. Also...''

I paused a bit, before continuing.

''I'm single.'' I gave them a suggestive wink.

-

-

"Are you always this blunt with girls?"

''What's that supposed to mean?'' I was picking up a tray before selecting my meal. I decided to go with a meat bun and a pack of apple juice. Kushida followed my lead.

''What kind of guy asks a girl out to a lunch date, on the second day of school?''

I turned to look at her. Since I stopped midway she crashed into me. Realizing how close she was to me, Kushida froze up like a statue. A faint blush was visible on her cheeks.

''Oh, did I give you that impression? Don't worry this isn't a date. A date implies that we are seeing each other as romantic candidates. This... is more like hanging out. Purely platonic.''

''Wait? Then why am I here, I thought you said we should only talk in your room.''

I did tell her she was welcome to come to my room if she ever wanted to talk about something or to relieve some stress. I can't promise her legitimate advice, but the least I can do is hear her out.

To avoid needless rumors, I intended to avoid most interactions with her at school, and my room is the ideal chamber for privacy. There was also the option of anonymous messaging, but I don't want anything to be traced.

It's only the second day of school, but she seems open to the idea.

''Do I need a reason when a cute girl is involved?''

''You still didn't answer me, Ayanokouji.''

''Well guess I'm busted. Don't worry it's in your best interest to follow me for now. I will explain everything all in due time.''

She pouted with an annoyed face but didn't retort back.

[ Kushida POV]

[Location: School cafeteria]

We sat down at an empty table and I scanned my surroundings, I checked to find candidates I should befriend next, it's important for me to be friends with everyone. However, this was just a distraction, my real concern was something else.

It was the boy sitting next to me.

Ayanokouji sat there casually sipping on his apple juice, his eyes fixed on all the students in the cafeteria. There was an AirPod on his left ear. I noticed that he enjoys listening to music. Like a lot.

[A/N his music obsession would be explained in the next chapter]

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I followed him here, but it definitely wasn't this. From the corner of his eyes, he cast a peek at me. His gaze caused my heartbeat to quicken; I hated how he could do that with just a glance.

''How's lunch?'' He placed his elbow on the table before leaning against it, he stared at my two small sandwiches and my cup of coffee.

''A-Ah, it's g-good, good.'' I also hated how I stammered.

''Speaking of food, did you notice anything weird in the lunch menu?'' He wanted my comment, but I shook my head in denial.

He sighed in disappointment before leaning up close and placing his palm on top of my head. As butterflies fluttered in my stomach, I flinched at his touch.

What in the world is he doing?! Head pats!?

But, with his hand on top of my hair, he turned my head, and directed my gaze in the direction he desired. A senior was having his lunch quietly and alone in one of the far corners.

''What do you see?'' He asked.

''A-Ah, I'm not s-sure?''

Seriously! Does he have no concept of personal space? He could've just pointed.

He turned my head again, and there was a boy and a girl eating together at the table. He showed me more students seven more times before his hand left my head. I felt a bit empty when he did so, but I pushed that feeling aside.

I'm still not sure what he was getting at. Ayanokouji is trying to tell me something, and I wish he would stop being so mysterious and just say it. Then again it's probably ironic for me to complain about secrets.

I grumpily took a bite off my sandwich. ''I still don't get it, what was the whole point?'' Other than making my heart feel like it ran a marathon.

"They all have two things in common. They are all seniors who ordered the free meal."

''Huh?''

''Oh, you don't know? The school menu has a free meal option. I'm assuming this is for folks who have used up all of their private points. But why would that be the case when this is the first month and we have 100,000 points every month? I have a good idea what's going on, but I want solid evidence.''

He got up from his seat, even though he wasn't done eating.

''Alright, let's go.'' He grabbed my hand and led me in the direction of one of the students.

''H-Hey! Th hells wrong with y-you--'' I stammered.

He turned around with an innocent face like he did nothing wrong. I glared at our connected hands.

''I thought girls liked holding hands.'' He said.

''They like it cause it has meaning. It's meant to be special. You just do it as casually as breathing. You've probably done this a hundred times already." I needed to stop talking. But I couldn't help but take my frustration out on him.

''I see, but Kushida,'' he says. He took my hand in his and intertwined his fingers with mine. ''This is my first time holding a girl's hand like this, doesn't that itself mean it's special. Because you're my first.''

I immediately got flustered, and I tried to break away but his grip wouldn't let me.

Seeming satisfied Ayanokouji turned around and kept walking, while I followed obediently.

We walked up to one of the people who was eating the free meals. He let my hand go when we reached there, I had this weird sense of longing, but I didn't think much of it.

''Excuse my bluntness, but are you a senpai?'' He asked the guy sitting.

''Yeah, what's it to you?''

''Now, now, let's not be aggressive,'' Ayanokouji said calmly. ''I just wanna know which class you are in.''

''Huh? Get lost I'm trying to eat.''

The senpai thought it was a little disrespectful for some reason, but Ayanokouji appeared unconcerned. He nudged me with his elbow, signifying that it was time for me to speak. I was perplexed at first, but as I saw the gravity of the situation, I suddenly realized why he had brought me here.

This guy...

He was well aware that this would happen. He... is trying to weaponize my cuteness.

If I could I would've drop-kicked him right here, but I calmed myself by taking a deep breath before continuing.

"Please senpai, knowing this is important for us," I said while leaning forward and approaching the senpai with both hands on the table.

He blushed before looking away.

Ew.

''I a-am a third-year, and I'm in c-class D.''

"I see, thank you for your time, we'll be leaving now," Ayanokouji replied nonchalantly and walked away, without even looking to see if I was following or not.

''...''

This jerk is only using me for my body, that sounds wrong but accurate at the same time.

We then headed to another upperclassman who was savoring the free lunch. We asked the same question and used the same strategy. He claimed once more that he was in class D.

We proceeded to all the others in our area, and they were all in class D, except one of them being in Class C. What does this necessarily mean?

We repeated the process on those who were eating normal meals this time, and this was the first time they said they were in a class other than D. One of the upperclassmen belonged to class B, while the other belonged to class A. Is this just a coincidence?

We stood up and walked away; what is Ayanokouji's goal? There were 9 people I saw nearby getting a free lunch meal at this time. He wanted me to look for any similarities between all of these students. With the knowledge we currently have, the only thing that comes to mind is our class.

''It seems that class D gets the lowest amount of points in the school while class A gets the most. Which means 100K private points a month isn't constant, something causes it to change?''

''Good job, Kushida. I'm kinda impressed.'' He placed his hand on my head, giving me a head pat for real this time, ruffling up my hair.

''Quit d-doing that!'' I shrieked as I swatted his hands away like a cat exposed to cold water.

I glared at him for giving me mini heart attacks every now and then. I didn't even realize that my mask slips away when it's just the two of us.

So our class is divided not randomly but by another means of measurement. But what?

I have no means of knowing right now; my only clue is when sensei stated that a student's evaluation was based on merit. Merit can refer to a variety of things, so I can't exactly pin it down to one, but the most obvious ones are behavior and ability. That would imply that the best students are assigned to class A, while the worst students are sent to class D.

But... Isn't Ayanokouji the top student? Why is he in class D then?

It seems the more I learn about him, the more questions I have.

''Don't you think this whole thing was a waste of time. We could've just asked sensei directly.''

''I doubt she could've answered, or she would've done so already. I'm certain there are certain rules in place to prevent her from talking. Of course, we could've just bought it from her.''

''Bought it from her?''

''Yeah, if you recall the first day, sensei mentioned that in this school we can buy virtually anything. I believe answers to my questions fall under the realm of anything. I'm sure even test scores are an option.''

My eyes widened at his revelation. I mean I knew he was supposed to be smart, but... who even thinks like that?

''So why didn't you just buy it?'' Curiosity got the best of me.

''Mmm, I figured it be a waste of private points, I mean I can just figure it out by myself so why bother?'' He shrugged his shoulders without a care in the world. He talks about his impressive feats as if anyone can do it.

His eyes gleamed in the light. ''Besides, I can just use this as an excuse to spend time with you.''

Watching him, I smoothed my hands over my dress.

''You seemed disappointed that lunch wasn't what you expected. If you are up for it, I can take you out on an actual date. If you want, that is.'' He held a hand out to me.

It still baffles me how he says all these embarrassing things with a straight face.

''Ha. Ha.'' I stared at his hand. I gulped and there was a fluttering in my stomach. ''Yeah, I'm not holding your hand.''

''Why not?''

''Because I'm not going to hold hands with you when I don't even like you.''

''Ouch.'' Ayanokouji placed his hand over his chest, wincing. ''That was harsh.''

Yeah, he needed better acting classes.

I turned around and began going back to class while hugging my elbows. Leaving him behind.

''Well if you ever change your mind, you know who to call.'' He said behind me.

My breath caught hearing that and I paused. I can't believe I actually spent a few seconds considering the offer, too. I tucked my hair back and resumed walking away again.

Dammit, my ideal school life wasn't supposed to be like this. I wish he would just disappear... Yet at the same time, I wish he didn't.

How strange, normally I would be hellbent on getting rid of anyone who knew about my other side...

So why is he different...

...

Nevermind, there is no point in thinking about it.

At the very least, I was glad my back was to him, cause my heart was beating 1000 times a second and a hot flush crawled down my cheeks, spreading over my neck.

[A/N: I should warn you this chapter is kinda big. 6400 words to be exact. I wanted to split it into 2 parts, but then I was like 'F*CK IT'. It focuses on Ayanokouji's interaction with the class, as he smooth talks his way into becoming leader]

[3rd person POV]

[Location- The student council]

There were four people present in the student council room. The entire room was dimly lit, but enough light to see everything.

''President, we received a total of eight applications to join the student council staff this time.''

Tachibana, a small-framed girl with purple hair, notified Manabu Horikita, the student council president. He stayed seated in his office chair. A large dark Chocobo wood table was in front of him, furnished till smooth and carrying various applications and documents ranging from confidential information to something as small as club budgets.

Although the student council application documents were in front of him, he made no attempt to open the files. That duty belonged to his fellow subordinates.

Manabu Horikita prefers to pick members by interviewing them himself, he bases people on his own judgment instead of categorizing them through raw data.

But this also works as a great method for understanding the mindset of his future colleagues.

Nagamu was lying down on the nearby couch with his feet up, as if this was his living room.

''Five of them are from second years, while three belong to the first years.'' Tachibana continued.

''You can skip the second years, if there was somebody worthy of being on the student council, I would have recommended them myself. Unfortunately, most of them are a letdown, heh." Nagamu chuckled at his own words, before diverting his gaze to his classmate. ''Don't you agree Kiriyama.''

Kiriyama sat straight on the couch opposite of Nagamu. A long table separates them both, acting like a border.

Nagamu gave him a sly grin, but beneath it was a reminder, a reminder of how effortlessly he took over the second years. Kiriyama responded with a glare, but ultimately chose to disregard his provocation.

Manabu was silently watching his colleague's shallow banter but said nothing.

''Tell me about the first years,'' Nagamu continued. ''They seem to be an interesting bunch.''

''One of them is a boy from Class A, the other one is a girl from Class B, and the last...'' As she approached the final application, her eyes widened. ''Class...D.''

Kiriyama had a copy of the files, he was simply skimming through them.

Nagamu was also reading a copy of the applications, but his attention was drawn to their photographs rather than their data, or more particularly, to the middle photo. A young lady with strawberry blonde hair and a beautiful smile. No one in the room noticed Nagamu's lips curling or how he licked his lips as he glanced at the girl's photo.

''I think it's safe to say, we can just ignore the Class D student, and focus on the rest two.''Said Kiriyama.

''I would advise you against it...'' Tachibana complained. ''He got a perfect score on the entrance exam. That's something unheard of.''

''You hear that Kiriyama, full marks on entrance exams. Doesn't that sound like student council material to you,'' Nagamu said lazily while stretching his arms.

''Yes, but you do realize that academics aren't everything. There is a reason he's in Class D, it's cause whatever baggage he's carrying with him, outweighs any merit he might've provided.''

''No... I understand that, but... just take a look at this.'' Tachibana didn't budge down, for some odd reason she seemed to hold the Class D student in high regard.

"You see, each student is required to write a 300-word essay about themselves, on why they would be a good addition to the student council, and what they can contribute." Tachibana exhaled deeply before proceeding. "However, this man just sent a blank paper with a single sentence."

''Wow, that's one cocky bastard, he might even give me a run for my money.'' Nagamu laughed wholeheartedly. ''See, I told you the first years would be interesting this time, Horikita-senpai.''

Horikita's expression was unreadable as always, even more so due to the light being reflected by his spectacles.

"Doesn't this illustrate his ignorance and naivety, to have so much confidence that the student council will welcome him in with open arms simply because he received the highest marks?"Kiriyama retorted.

''Oh, looks like someone's jealous,'' Nagamu mused.

''No, No, No, you don't understand... Just read it.'' Tachibana passed the boy's application.

With an annoyed sigh, Kiriyama reluctantly took the paper. As far as he was concerned, someone from class D wasn't worth his or the student council's time.

But the moment he glanced at the paper he froze up and frowned deeply.

Nagamu being the curious guy that he is, got up from the couch just to see its contents. However much like Kiriyama, his ever-present smile disappeared when he laid eyes on it.

The almost blank page contained nothing but a small sentence.

One written in bold form.

In beautiful clear handwriting.

'I figured out the S-system.'

[ Kiyotaka POV]

[Location- On the way to Class D]

I walked toward myclassroom with a medium stride. My footsteps echoed through the empty hallways. Just as I reached the door, I slid it open in a fast motion.

Light entered my vision.

Until everything became clear.

My t̶o̶y̶s̶ classmates looked the same as usual.

The majority of them were out of their seats, chatting with the small groups of friends they had formed during the previous three days. There were also larger groups, such as Kushida and her close friends, or Hirata with all the girls surrounding them. There were also misfits, such as the pink-spectacled girl who appeared to want to join a group of her own but was too afraid to ask. Horikita was quietly reading a book, and of course, Koenji was being Koenji.

A pretty normal classroom if I say so myself.

Chabishira-sensei sat silently in her chair, minding her own business. She was in the midst of working on a crossword puzzle. I guess when you're her age, ordinary things like word puzzles become exciting.

She raised an eyebrow when I walked toward her.

"If it isn't Kiyotaka Ayanokouji-kun, our prized pupil?'' She said in a humorous tone. ''Do you want to ask me any questions? I'll answer anything that I'm permitted to," she made the first initiative.

''I was wondering if I could use homeroom period to announce something... important.''

''By all means, do what you want. It is in your right.''

I nodded, before standing behind the podium to look at my classmates.

Well here goes...

"Ahem, might I please have everyone's attention?" With my monotone voice, I attempted to shout. Some turned to face me, but soon looked away, the majority of them either didn't notice me or didn't think I was worth their time.

Kushida was glancing at me while talking to a group of girls, so I gave her a nod, hoping she understood what I was saying.

Hirata was also trying to look at me, but his eyesight was obstructed by the girls crowding him. Hasn't even been 3 days, and the guy probably has the entire girl population crushing on him. Quite impressive.

However...

Needless to say, no one was paying attention to me.

''Pfft..'' I glanced at the sound, Chabishira sensei was covering her mouth trying to block out her laughter, her eyes mockingly staring at me.

This woman...

''Sensei, may I get permission to use... unconventional means to grab their attention.''

''Ho, you are saying some interesting things,'' Chabishira-sensei smirked. ''Normally I would say no, but I'm just curious at this point. Very well, permission granted.''

I lightly bowed before taking a deep breath. I tried doing it the right way, however, it bore no fruit. Now, I'm forced to show them an unsightly view. But alas, they have no one to blame but themselves.

I cracked my knuckles before curling my right fingers into a fist. I immediately slammed the whiteboard sideways behind me without looking.

BAAM !

A sound so loud, it might as well be mistaken as a bullet shot.

Every laughter, every whisper, every gossip ceased to exist, as everyone froze up to stare at me.

''Listen, when I'm talking to you, you damn worthless maggots.''

The room temperature seemed to immediately drop, while everyone was as still as statues. No one dared to be the first to move a muscle.

BAAM !

I hit the board once more, the white surface vibrating in the impact.

A couple of them gulped and even involuntarily flinched at the sound this time.

''I can tell at a glance that at least 50% of you are c* cksuckers , and the other 50% are c* cksuckers who've never been told to believe in themselves. I'm going to shove my boot so far and fast up your a* it'll trigger a geological event. You all reek of poverty and animal abuse. Every breath you take is a stunning endorsement of abortion. You shitstains are a collective masterpiece of failure.''

My dark gaze threatened to engulf them in eternal winter.

Any desire to ask 'what's going on' was stopped as soon as they heard me. Every single one of my classmates' shocked eyes was glued toward me, except Koenji who was... combing his hair? Their jaws were wide open.

Being satisfied with my handiwork, I relaxed and eliminated any menacing aura I could have given out. I rubbed my hands together as if I had just finished a long day at work.

"I'm happy I finally got your attention," I said gently, almost as if I hadn't just insulted their entire existence a second earlier.

The class still stared at me, dumbfounded.

''Too far?'' I whispered to Chabishira-sensei wondering if I would face any repercussions for my use of... profanities.

''Well, that depends... if whatever you are going to announce is well worth all those cruel words, I'm willing to overlook this.'' Said sensei, her confident smile not faltering even a bit.

-

''Ok let's cut to the chase, shall we.'' I returned my focus to the class. Though they still looked like they just walked in while their parents were having sex.

''Oh don't look so glum, I was just joking around. Do I look like the kind of guy who would say stuff like that and mean it? I would never hurt a fly, honest to God.''

Technically I was telling the truth. I have broken bones and caused deep scars on others' skins, taken part in CIA torture techniques, and berated someone to the point of them needing therapy, but I would never hurt a fly.

Insects gross me out.

The class was still a mixture of anger, fear, and confusion.

Realizing that it won't be that easy, I became annoyed, but pushed any dark thoughts aside. Giving out a big sigh, I got ready to untangle myself from this situation.

Sensei looked on at me like she was expecting a show.

I scanned my class until I got all the information I needed.

''Mei-Yu!,'' I called out to my half-Chinese classmate.

The small girl flinched when her name was called.

"I see you manicured your nails recently; the purple polish looks great on you. I'm presuming that you're attempting to be daring, daringly cute, and I have to say, it's working."

''E-Eh..'' Chinese loli blushed while looking down.

''Onodera, not every girl can pull off short hair, but you definitely have the whole tomboy GF vibe going on. And Satou, don't think I haven't noticed you changing perfumes, rose lavender, I can smell the sweet fragrance from here. Let me guess, you are trying to impress your crush, I'm kinda jealous, he's a lucky guy.''

The two girls turned red in rapid succesion.

People appreciate it when you notice small things about it since it subconsciously shows that you care about them to some degree. With my history, I can't help but notice every single small detail, even if I don't want to.

Of course, the trick is to make sure my compliments don't come off as creepy. No one likes an ever-observant stalker.

''Karuizawa... you definitely watched 'Mean Girls' recently. Sudo, I hear you joined the basketball club, quite impressive if I say so myself, I'm sure you have very high potential to make it pro. And Akito, I have to confess you surprised me. I could tell you'd been in fights because of your rough arms, yet when you held that bow, you were so elegant, much like the refined nobility of the medieval time.''

Both the guys averted their eyes.

Compliments work even better with guys since they aren't used to it. The trick here is to make sure it doesn't come off as g̶a̶y̶ suggestive.

''Hirata, buddy, leave some girls for the rest of us.'' He showed an awkward smile when he heard me.

''And Yamauchi...'' My brain racked up trying to find a compliment for him. Strange, I can usually find 50 variants of strategies to solve an escape room, but with Yamauchi, everything is blank.

''Keep... being you, I guess? You are.. perfect the way you are.'' Yamauchi puffed out his chest and let out a smug smile at my response.

After a few more minutes of this and that, the atmosphere of the class lightened up. One would even wonder, if I really said those cruel words in the first place.

'' Now that we have established that I am sweeter than I look,'' I started talking again. '' Let us head to the main event.''

'' Hold it,'' A cold voice called out.

A girl in the back immediately got up from her seat with an annoyed glare, her black hair swaying.

Ofcourse its her...

''Joke or not, I would never let go of such a blatant insult straight to my face. In all my life I have never met such a rude and narrowmin--''

''Hush now darling, you are now on timeout, we got more important things to discuss than your broken pride.''

''Dar- What?''

I silenced Horikita before she continued, one advantage of having a flawlessly monotone voice is that people can never tell if I'm serious or not. Besides, I don't have time to humor her.

-

"I'm going to begin, and I hope you guys pay attention because I guarantee you, this is crucial."

"As you know we were given 100,000 yen of monthly allowance for the three years we will spend here, but don't you find that a bit dubious? Even if it's the government, surely giving a student 100,000 yen is biting more than what they can chew. If you were to give 100,000 yen to 160 students in a year, they would have to give us around 16,000,000 yen per month. Are we really worth that price tag?"

As I said that, people looked at each other and started to wonder about the things Chabashira-sensei mentioned.

''So I did a bit of digging, isn't that right Kushida?'' I shifted the class's attention to her.

There was the reason I brought her along with me in my investigations, it's cause she acts as a witness. And the class undoubtedly trusts her way more than me. They would hold her word with a higher value than mine.

''Why don't you take it from here,'' I told her.

''Sure thing Ayanokouji.'' Kushida stood up.

I informed her last night what I was going to do today. As a result, she was obviously prepared for this.

"I went to lunch with Ayanokouji yesterday to examine and investigate various doubts, and we noticed that even though it was the second day, there were many people enjoying free meals. When we asked all of those individuals what class they were in, they all responded D."

I found myself, victim, to a couple of harsh jealous gazes from some of the boys when she mentioned 'lunch'. I just ignored them.

''We believe there is a link between them.'' Kushida continues.

Some folks began to whisper among themselves about what she was saying, while others were still perplexed.

"We then asked other people who were having standard meals and surprisingly they were in different classes, and I'm quite confident this means that class D gets the fewest points and class A gets the most."

An unsettling feeling spread across the class. Ike and Yamauchi were ready to start whining when I interrupted them before they could start throwing a fit.

"I also applied to be a member of the student council. You may wonder why I would want to join the student council. Don't worry it's nothing noble. I just like having power and control." I said nonchalantly with a shrug.

My blatant truth, caused a bunch of them to uncomfortably shift in their seats, but that's fine. The sooner they understand my hunger for authority, the better.

"And, interestingly, even if first-year students are chosen to serve on the student council. They can only participate after a month. So why is there a set time period for first-year students to begin their service? This confirms my theory that the information I learned is something that every first-year student would be notified of after about a month."

I cast a glance towards Chabishira sensei, but she seemed preoccupied with my remarks, crossing her legs and eyeing me with a tiny smile.

-

I stepped down from the podium and began pacing around the classroom as if I were on a stroll, and each student's gaze followed my every movement. This is excellent.

"Before I offer my findings, I want everyone to know that I am not personally attacking anyone. I am also a part of Class D, so a direct slander to you is a direct slander to me."

In response to my antics, the class nodded. Some folks were intrigued, while others appeared anxious.

"I believe there is a hierarchy among the four classes in this institution. This would explain why students' monthly points change depending on the class they are in. This school assigns students to classes based on their value, with class A being the best and class D being the worst. Plainly put, we in class D have been deemed lesser to those in other classes."

Everyone was perplexed when I spoke those words, as confusion and turmoil swept around the room.

"Is that really true, S-sensei?" A young lady yelled.

Conversations and whispers could be heard across the room.

"This has to be a bad joke? R-Right?!" A young boy yelled.

''Pfft...Ahahahahaha!'' The room was filled with a single laugh. The kind of laugh you may also call maniacal.

Everyone was staring at the source, which was Chabishira sensei, who was clutching her stomach and laughing wholeheartedly. Even I was a bit confused at her behavior.

She calmed down after a few seconds. She smiled at me as she wiped a single joy tear away from her eyes.

"Although you've made an interesting assumption, doesn't it imply that you yourself are lesser, since you've been put here?" Chabashira-sensei inquired, slightly provocatively.

''Of course,'' I started walking to my classmates, dry amusement in my eyes.''I know my flaws better than anyone.''

I paused in front of a girl's desk.

''For example, one of my greatest flaws is me being devilishly handsome, too handsome in fact. Isn't that right Satou?'' I turned to the girl next to me, my index finger playfully twirling her medium brown hair.

''A-Ah,..U-Uhmm..Whaaa?!?'' Poor thing looked so red, I thought she might explode any second.

I should probably stop bullying her.

"But, Ayanokouji, doesn't your existence contradict your theory? You've demonstrated your competence by receiving perfect marks on the entrance examinations; shouldn't you be placed in a better class?" Hirata shot back.

He asked the question that's been on everyone's mind. Many people seemed to agree with him, but I'm afraid I'll have to give my t̶o̶o̶l̶s̶ classmates a dose of reality.

Turning my attention away from Satou I continued talking.

''Now that's funny, who said the school rated our merit simply on academics?" With this, everyone began whispering among themselves, and I noticed Yukimura and Horikita flinching.

"B-but isn't it just simple logic for schools to rank us based on our academic talents and test scores?" Matsushita retorted while looking intently at me.

"Maybe if this was a normal cram school, then sure. But Matsushita, you're forgetting one little detail. This is Advanced Nurturing High School. The elite of the elite. Surely just from your allowance, you deduced that this isn't your ordinary school?"

I responded, and she just stayed silent, unable to think of anything to say.

''Then how does the school determine our merit?'' It was Yukimura's turn to ask a question.

"Yukimura, I'm delighted you inquired because, while academics do play a role, it's only one part of the puzzle. Chabashira-sensei stated that the school evaluated us based on our talents and merit, which means that we are judged not only on our academics but also on our physical capabilities, morals and demeanor, people skills, versatility, and many other factors. But, that's not all." I responded, hinting that I still had more to say.

"I think everyone knows that in the alphabet hierarchy from A to D, ' A' would be considered to be the best while 'D' to be the worst. You may be asking, what is the whole point of all this? Well, it's one word, it starts with a C and ends with an N. Competition!''

Horikita immediately got up from her seat, and the loud screech of the table caused everyone to look at her. She stared at me with a glare. What a drama queen.

''Are you implying what I think you are implying?'' She spat out, her glare is still evident.

''Ah, it seems the ice queen wishes to join the conversation.'' I strolled over to her desk, my hands in my pocket. ''But yes, it's definitely what you are thinking.''

The rest of the class was painfully slow, still trying to decipher what was going on. Kushida was calm because I had already explained everything to her, while Koenji still had that cocky smile and was casually clipping his nails, unconcerned. Surprisingly, Matsushita seemed to also understand what was going on.

''For a competition to be exciting, it needs a reward to motivate its participants. Something that everybody wants. Something that everybody craves. Private points are a dull prize. Having money is nice, but it's not a necessity. There are free items for broke students so you can just tough it out for the next three years.''

''So how can you motivate a group of youngsters to aim higher? What bait do you use to reel them in? Well, it's simple really. After all, it's what attracted most of you here, like moths to a lamp.''

''Tch..'' Horikita tensed up.

''The most tempting aspect of this school is its guaranteed secured future and 100% acceptance rate. But what if I told you, that you can reap those rewards only if you graduate from class A. Every other class is worthless.''

Chabishira sensei let out a short laugh once more, she was really enjoying this. Why do I get the impression she would've bought popcorn, if she knew what I had in store for her today?

Individuals in the class who were listening in on mine and Horikita's conversation became concerned and anxious, not surprising, they just learned that their future would not be as straightforward as they had imagined.

''Impossible... I refuse to believe.'' Horikita debated.

''Do you have a better explanation for the competition. If you do, pray tell.''

''I-I..I..ah.. The government won't just blatantly lie to us!''

'' Grow up Black-haired girl, this is the government we are talking about. I'm sure lying is the last thing you should be surprised about.'' Koenji said in an amused tone while admiring himself through the hand mirror.

She clenched her fingers into fists, out of frustration.

''B-But why- Why am I-Why have we been placed here?''

I believe when she said 'we' she just meant her and me, not the whole class.

''If the school separates the inferior students by dumping them in Class D, I don't understand why I've been placed in this predicament."

I noticed a couple of students direct their anger at Horikita for indirectly referring to them as defects. Honestly, this girl has no self-awareness.

''Isn't it obvious, to even the playing field. Balance things out. Do you know how boring it would be if the whole thing was a one-sided massacre? Of course, I love a good challenge, the fewer odds I have, the better. But I guess we don't share similar views.''

'' Unfair...'' Horikita grimaced and glanced down. " This entire situation is just unfair. Isn't it ridiculous to put individuals who are considered exceptional in a lower class and jeopardize their careers simply because the school desired more competition?!" Horikita argued.

I gently grabbed her chin forcing her to look at me. Even though I am addressing the entire class, this time it's just the two of us.

''I acknowledge your w̶o̶r̶t̶h̶l̶e̶s̶s̶n̶e̶s̶s̶ excellence. However, in the grand scheme of things, your demerits far outweigh any merit you might've brought to the table.''

Her eyes widened for a second, before responding to me with the harshest glare she could muster.

I took a loose strand of her black hair and calmly tucked it behind her ear.

''Ok, since you are so blind to see, let me just spell it out for you. YOU ARE NOT AS SPECIAL AS YOU THINK YOU ARE. The fact that you're unaware of your own shortcomings is only icing on the cake. You have a serious case of arrogance and superiority complex, but no claims to back it up. You'd be as useless as a sitting duck in a group project since your unwillingness to cooperate prohibits you from adequately leading others. Finally, you confuse isolation with independence."

Horikita couldn't answer as I unraveled more pieces of my argument. She just stood there staring at me, unable to utter or speak a word.

''Should I go on, cause I have an entire list.''

That was a simple joke, but Horikita thought I was serious and averted her eyes.

''Behavior and attitude isn't everything tho,'' I carried on, this time directed at the class. "I'm sure one of the reasons this school attracted so many of you is that you can forget about the past and start over. Change your identity. Become a new person. However, the past is what shapes you into who you are, and the school will not just simply dismiss it."

That's all there is to it. I noticed three people reacting strongly out of the corner of my eye. Hirata appeared to be deep in thought. Karuizawa appeared to be having a small nervous breakdown but trying to seem calm. Kushida, on the other hand, just sat there staring at me.

I left Horikita and slowly walked towards Chabishira sensei.

I arrogantly sat on top of the teacher's table, in front of Chabishira sensei, facing my classmates. She looked at my daring actions but chose not to say anything.

I turned a little so that everyone could see my face from any angle. My classmates' attention was drawn back to me. Some appeared annoyed, while others appeared enraged. Many people, though, appeared scared or concerned. At the very least, this is a promising sign.

My action is supposed to be playful, but it is a silent reminder to my classmates that everything in front of me is mine.

"First and foremost, what you will hear today is strictly confidential. This is our one competitive advantage over the other classes, and it will only last a month. So be certain that no information leaks. If you wish to discuss it outside of class, create an invite-only private chat room."

My proposal was met with a simple nod from the class.

That was easy, but now comes the tough part.

"Second, I want you to save your private points and utilize them exclusively for basic needs. I hope you can save at least 60,000 points by the end of this month. I did establish that we do not receive 100,000 points per month."

''HELL NO! Not my SWEET PRIVATE POINTS!'' Ike cried out.

''YOUR THEORY IS PROBABLY WRONG ANYWAY!'' Yamauchi joined in.

A group of trendy fashion-type gals was also grumbling along with them. Based on my previous views of my classmates, I'd say this was a predictable reaction. Let's hope they understand what I'm going to say.

One of the bolder ones, Kei Karuizawa, got up from her seat and glared at me.

''If you think you can lecture me on how I should or shouldn't spend my own hard-earned private points, then you are dead wrong.'' She then looked at all the girls near her. ''Amiright girls!''

''Uh... yeah she's right!''

''T-That's right! That's right! I wanna buy stuff using my points!''

Gaining a bit of support from a few of the girls around her, she showed me a smug smile.

''Listen I understand the type of guy you are, trying so desperately to act intimidating. Sure you got the highest scores. BIG DEAL! But you are waaaay out of your league if you think you can make me do what you wan--''

''Sit down K-e-i ,'' Despite my bored expression I laced her first name with a bit of venom, a low warning from my spot at the table.

'' ᴼᴷ ,'' She said in a quiet voice before sitting back down without delay, a hesitant fake smile on her face as if she were some delinquent trying to put her past behind and improve herself by becoming a good girl.

Her supporters, or should I say ex-supporters? Stared at her actions dumbfounded, but couldn't find it in their hearts to blame her.

Guess Karuizawa is bark but no bite.

Shame.

I was almost kinda impressed by her. I suppose I gotta work on building her a backbone.

''Now then, where was I? Before I was so rudely interrupted,'' I grumbled while giving Karuizawa one final glance. ''Oh yeah, Private points are far more versatile than you think.''

''If you all recall the first day, sensei mentioned we can use it to buy anything. Even the info I shared with you guys probably could've been bought from sensei. And it doesn't stop there; I can bet that test marks are even on the menu. But that's not even the juiciest part...'' I paused before the final nail in the coffin. '' With enough points, you could potentially buy your way into Class A, am I correct sensei?''

''Indeed, Ayanokouji.'' Sensei smirked.

After she spoke those last words, the class turned into an atmosphere full of disorderly chaos and ruckus.

''No freaking way!''

''Y-Your telling me it's that e-easy?''

I put my finger to my lips to silence them.

"While I do applaud your passion. I would not consider that an option, even as a last resort. I'm sure it has quite the hefty price tag, we probably won't be able to save that much even if we save for three years with a steady stream of 100,000 points every month. Otherwise, every student would've graduated from class A. But this should be a good indication, on the power of private points."

I stared at Chabishira-sensei to confirm my revelation, but all she showed me was a mischievous smile; she appeared to enjoy communicating with that smile. I'm going to presume that whenever she smiles, I'm on the correct track. Which was peculiar because I'm pretty sure she never smiled the last two days. She didn't even seem enthusiastic about educating her students until I started talking.

I cast a sidelong peek down and caught sight of sensei's silky thighs under those black stockings.

I̶t̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶s̶h̶a̶m̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶
b̶u̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶a̶ ̶h̶u̶m̶a̶n̶ ̶i̶s̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶a̶ ̶o̶p̶t̶i̶o̶n̶.̶

I glanced back at my classmates, and most still appeared unsure. Guess I gotta put on a show for them.

''Now, I believe most of you still have doubts in your hearts. And that's totally fine, I would too, if I were in your position. So... I declare that a compensation is in order, just in case I'm wrong. Sounds reasonable right?''

''C-Compensation..?''

''What kind of compensation?'' Yamauchi looked like he was trying to sniff out gold.

''One of satisfaction.'' I replied back. ''How about we all make a bet, all of you vs me. I am a big fan of impossible odds after all. Let's say... if I'm wrong, about all this then I will be leaving school on my own accord.''

''W-What?''

"I-i don't think you have to go that far Ayanokouji-Kun..." Kushida said to me, though she seemed panicked for some reason.

"Ayanokouji no, even if you turn out to be wrong, you don't have to resort to this." Hirata also said to the rest of the class.

''Why not? It's more fun for me if there are risks involved. You all have nothing to lose except a fatter bank account with all those saved private points, while I have everything to lose. Sounds kinda cool right?''

I said nonchalantly while tapping my fingers against the wood of the teacher's table. Nothing about my demeanor showed even a hint of me being worried about losing.

"Everyone! I know we all barely know each other but I think we should consider Ayanokouji's theory! I trust his judgement! I know we've only just met, but it would break my heart to see all of us suffer for the next month, or perhaps three years." Kushida expressed her worry.

''I second that,'' Hirata joined in.

Little by little, everyone started to agree with me. Although I can probably imitate a highly social person, the real deals are something else, huh.

''Thirdly, I want people to stop misbehaving from now on. Got it? This includes napping during lessons, talking while the teacher is teaching, using phones during classes, arriving late, missing class without a valid excuse, and any other reason you or I can think of. Your behavior is evaluated in school. Would you like to know how I know this?"

I raised my index finger to the ceiling. " There are 11 hidden cameras in total in the room. Your daily activities are monitored 24/7.''

After I said those final words, the class devolved into chaotic commotion and noise.

'' One, two, three, four...'' I counted and pointed all the hidden cameras at them, a total of eleven of them. Sensei dry chuckled beside me.

''Of course, I don't expect any of you to become as disciplined as Gandhi by tomorrow, but do take baby steps. Rome wasn't build in a day after all.''

I waited for the chaos of confusion to die down, before continuing.

"Last but not least, I want us to aspire for Class A. No, scratch that, we will reach Class A.''

All of my classmates turned to look at me as I said those final words. Some had their mouths open, some were awestruck by my ambition, some stared at me with admiration, and some even looked at me with fear.

Koenji was indifferent, just combing his hair back while humming a song.

Horikita finally looked up in hope, while Chabishira-sensei's smile widened.

S̶h̶e̶'̶s̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶b̶a̶b̶l̶y̶ ̶w̶e̶t̶ ̶r̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶n̶o̶w̶.̶

Horikita abruptly stood up. "Can you tell me why? Why do you want to be in class A? I've been watching you for two days and you haven't shown any enthusiasm in caring for the class. I need to know your reasoning before I can trust you."

W̶h̶y̶ ̶d̶o̶e̶s̶ ̶a̶n̶y̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶d̶o̶ ̶a̶n̶y̶t̶h̶i̶n̶g̶?̶
̶S̶h̶e̶e̶r̶,̶ ̶a̶b̶s̶o̶l̶u̶t̶e̶ ̶b̶o̶r̶e̶d̶o̶m̶!̶"̶

Trust me? That's probably the dumbest thing anyone could do. I don't even trust myself.

I should probably not say that...

There was a reason Adolf Hitler was appointed the supreme ruler, it's cause he could influence and resonate with the crowd. The common people. Germany was in a desperate state back then, much like Class D, and wanted a messiah to rescue them from that abyss.

Even if it meant that the messiah was a demon in disguise.

I got up from the table and stood behind the podium once more.

"You're all high schoolers," I started talking. ''This is the most critical and pivotal time of your life. For what you do and decide now, at this age, may well shape the course of your life...''

As I spoke, my volume increased and my tone became stronger. I gestured with my hands for emphasis.

"This school seemed to have deemed you lesser. And who knows maybe they are right? Maybe you really are inferior to the rest. Maybe this whole thing is a bad joke to them. Maybe they just want to watch the scum of the world struggle to climb up the hill of hierarchy! Only to repeatedly trip, and tumble down to the fiery pit of failure."

''And do wanna know what I say to that? I say screw them! Screw this school! Screw this system!''

People gasped.

''Have a deep belief...in your own dignity, your own worth, and your own somebodiness ...Don't allow anybody to make you feel that you are nobody!"

The audience felt a rush! These were words that every other young person in this room, all of whom were fighting to find their place in the world, could relate to.

They are teenagers for God's sake.

"Always feel that you count...Always feel that you have worth...and always feel that your life has ultimate significance! And even if the school can't see it, I do."

''A diamond doesn't start out polished and shining. It's ugly and coarse. It once was nothing special, but with enough care and time, becomes something spectacular. You guys are that diamond.''

Everyone stopped breathing! Their mouths dropped open! Their eyes sparkled! Their wide eyes were fixed on me! All of the students felt a strong burning in their chests! Which of them hadn't been turned down? Which of them hadn't felt isolated or afraid? These words spoke directly to their hearts!

''Mark my words, with me by your side, I will make you reach Class A. It won't be easy; perhaps it's better to just give up. But that would just be proving to the school that you really are defective, and you don't want that. You must keep moving. You must keep going...

If you can't fly, run.

If you can't run...walk.

If you can't walk! Crawl!

But by all means! Keep moving!"

Students gasped!

The students' hearts pumped! Their breaths were short! Fists clenching!

A couple of the girl's eyes grew red.

Which one of them wasn't uncertain about their future? Which one of them wasn't marginalized by this unfair world? Which one of them hadn't watched a dream crushed by the world's weight, forcing them to pursue a more "realistic path?"

They wanted to excel! They wanted to feel important!

My final act has arrived.

''Class D is diseased. Rotten to the core. There's no saving it''

''We need to pull it out by the roots. Wipe the slate clean. BURN IT DOWN!''

''And like a phoenix from the ashes, we will rise, a new Class D will be born.''

''Evolved, but untamed!''

T̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶e̶a̶k̶ ̶w̶i̶l̶l̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶p̶u̶r̶g̶e̶d̶,̶ ̶

''WE WILL REACH CLASS A''

I exhaled. It was over.

The room was silent for a long time...

Then, Hirata stood up. He gazed at me.

Clap* *Clap* He started clapping.

As soon as he did, everybody woke up. Soon, the entire class was standing. (Well, except Koenji and Horikita)

There was roaring applause!

During the cold war, the soviet union used Political Propaganda as a means of mass communication. It was primarily used to persuade the citizens to further the governments agenda. As I read their history, I always wondered why or how people fell for such blatant lies and twisted truths.

Now... I no longer have to wonder.

''My name is Kiyotaka Ayanokouji''

[TO BE CONTINUED]

[A/N: Yes he couldn't figure out everything, like knowing the difference between class points and private points, or about special exams, but I doubt he could've figured that out with the info he had.

Of course, he could potentially seduce a female senpai or just torture a male senpai for the info, but I'm not sure if that would be satisfying. But, who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

But at the end of the day, knowing the rest of the info would be pointless, as the strategy won't change, since this is the first month. Class points won't increase but will only decrease from 1000. The only way to minimize that is by behaving properly, which Ayano is focusing on.

Also, this Ayano likes a challenge. That's the only reason he didn't just straight-up buy it from Chabs. Since it would be too easy.

Not to mention the whole buying info the first day is too played out in fanfics. I mean no disrespect when I say this, the whole thing is a 5000IQ play, and I have nothing but respect for self-test for coming up with it. But yeah, I wanted to try something sort of new.

Also, the next chapter is gonna be kinda disturbing, you probably won't enjoy it if Yamauchi's your favorite character.]

Vol.1. Chapter 2.1: A game of cards with your stalker

[Matsushita POV]

[Location: Class-D]

''Good morning Ayanokouji,'' Kushida called out to the boy who just walked in.

''G-Good morning... Ayanokouji,'' Another girl called out, followed by some more.

''Morning ladies, hope you all had a good night's sleep. I would hate to see avoidable dark circles ruin your beautiful faces,'' Ayanokouji waved back as he made his way to his desk.

He's been the talk of the class for a week since the entrance ceremony. I'm sure every one of us panicked when he revealed the truth about this school to the class. The Advanced Nurturing High School, a gorgeous utopia, literally had our futures in its grip.

And it's scary to think no one would've known without him.

''Sudo a certain bird told me about your endeavors. Apparently, no first-year student is ever chosen to play on the main team this soon. Yet you managed to do it in the first month, no doubt. Very impressive,'' Ayanokouji exclaimed, raising his hand in a high five. The red haired guy gave a cocky smile and returned his high five.

As someone born into a wealthy household, all I had to do was honor my parent's efforts by excelling academically. In that aspect, there was mutual respect for our abilities, and my loving parents raised me in an environment with no constraints on my independence.

Ultimately, I've imagined a variety of possible scenarios for myself. Working as a flight attendant for a major airline or airport, or even marrying a financially successful man, would've been ideal.

Yet, when I started at this school, I was able to set far larger goals for myself. It would be fantastic if I could study at a top-notch university in another country. After that, a plethora of opportunities would present themselves to me. Everything would pretty simple after that.

Sure, I expected some struggles to come my way, but, obstacles are inevitable. Still, I never imagined I would be assigned to Class D, which was actually a class for the so-called "defects".

Ayanokouji finally went to his desk. He sat at his table, his gaze fixed on Horikita. Normally, everyone would see this behavior as delinquent, but Ayanokouji appears to have unique privileges because everyone likes him.

The emphasis is on ' everyone,' because Horikita appears to be ignoring him as she casually reads her book. Of course, Ayanokouji was unfazed and continued to converse with her. Everyone started muttering about how kind Ayanokouji is for trying so hard to talk to Horikita cause no one else in the class would.

However judging by his cold eyes, it's nowhere near that. If I had to guess, he's doing it cause it annoys her. He always seems amused every time Horikita glares at him. I wonder if he's an M.

I tried reading his lips from a distance to figure out what he was saying, but I couldn't.

I've been observing him for a while. Most people would definitely label my activity as borderline stalking, but I disagree. It is not considered animal cruelty when a scientist dissects an animal in the name of science. I am quite similar to that scientist.

I am observing him so I can understand him.

Ayanokouji paused talking for a little moment before swiftly turning his head in my direction, as if he sensed my gaze. My heart rate increased, but I made a conscious effort not to look away, as doing so would make me appear more suspicious. So I held his gaze and smiled at him, but he obviously didn't return my smile.

Ayanokouji went back to talking with Horikita.

[LOCATION: Karaoke ]

''Come on!'' Sato pulled me down a set of stairs that led to the ground floor. I held on tight to her hand, afraid I would lose her as we wove through the crowd of students.

A couple of Class D students, primarily Hirata, wanted to host a little social gathering to get to know everyone, and Karaoke looked like the perfect event. Everyone in the class was invited, but only the social ones came. It's hardly surprising.

Sometime during that event, Sato had pulled me away from the karaoke room to take me somewhere with her. It took me a moment to figure out which direction my friend was going, but we soon found ourselves at the food counter.

We squeezed into a space only big enough for one person. "Two vanilla late," Sato ordered. Just as she reached for her purse, an arm snaked between them and threw down his student ID.

A voice followed, ''Drinks on me.''

Satou and I turned to see a man standing behind us, his brown hair tousled with sweat, so he slicks it back with his right hand.

''Thanks,'' Satou breathed.

''No problem,'' Ayanokouji said while turning his gold eyes to us. ''You girls enjoying yourselves?''

Satou answered quickly, ''Yes. You?''

''Oh...although I am embarrassed to say it, social events aren't really my thing,'' he shrugged his shoulders. ''I need to go get some fresh air.''

I glanced at Satou, who blurted exactly what I was thinking. ''Do you want us to keep you company?''

The man scoffed. ''Although I appreciate the sentiment,'' he said and extended his hand to take back his student ID. ''Don't sacrifice your fun just for me.''

With our drinks in hand, we watched Ayanokouji depart the room, his hands in his pockets. What a shame; I was curious to see how he would act in such a social setting.

''Ahhh, don't you think Ayanokouji is just sooo cool,'' Sato said dreamily. It doesn't take a genius to figure out she likes him.

''Seems weird to me.''

''Huh! Weird how?!'' Sato complained.

''Uhh... I mean I never even seen the guy smile, I don't think anyone has, don't you find that odd.'' I was trying to think it through logically.

''Nope, it just adds more to his charm. Though seeing him smile would be a welcome sight.'' Satou said, feeling giddy.

In a book, I read that the quickest method to gain someone's trust is to smile at them. It weakens their defenses. Yet with nothing more than his icy poker face, this man managed to persuade and ensnare the entire class. I can't even imagine what would have happened if he had openly smiled.

That thought is terrifying, yet thrilling.

Mostly cause I'm curious what a smiling Ayanokouji would look like.

[ Kiyotaka POV]

Rubbing a hand against my forehead, I walked out of the "Karaoke room" as it had been called.

To me, it seemed more like a bar with the lights turned low, loud music that I didn't really like, and a lot of students who really needed to re-evaluate their lives.

Sighing, I went down the steps and started walking along the sidewalk. I took out my AirPods and felt relieved when I heard my usual playlist.

So far, I hadn't had much luck in finding anyone who fit what I was looking for. Admittedly, I was being picky, but I felt like that was acceptable.

Stuffing my hands in my pockets, I kept walking. I wasn't starving to death, but I really did want to have a nice meal.

Glancing up and to the side, I crossed by a billboard that showed the time as seven o'clock. Still early.

The several conversations I'd tried to strike up with people in the karaoke had turned into shouting matches due to how loud the music was. And we still hadn't been loud enough to communicate effectively.

I might be a villain, but I still prefer talking like a civilized person.

I came to a halt as I arrived at my location. With no cameras, I proceeded through the deserted alleyway toward the lone female leaning against the wall, waiting for me. She drank a lemon juice box using a straw.

''So how was your day?'' I inquired of the cheerful young lady next to me. ''Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long.''

''The same as always, and no. Don't worry Ayanokouji, I left the Kareoke a while ago since I wasn't feeling too good.'' With a groan, Kushida stretched her arms skyward, straining the fabric of her blouse and emphasizing her breasts. I gave it a quick glance before shifting my focus elsewhere.

''Anything noteworthy?''

''Let's see, I helped in making a couple of the girls behave, just like you asked. Oh, I even had to chance to make a few friends from other classes as well,'' She nevertheless gave off a pleasant aura, like an innocent flower that can't help but brighten someone's day with nothing more than a smile. I didn't like it.

"It's just the two of us, so you can drop your mask."

Within seconds, her eyes, which had the brightness of a cheerful girl, darkened to a dull shade of her former self, making it difficult to believe that this Kushida and the other one are the same people.

''Karuizawa is a big bully, like don't act so arrogant straight to my face, you are lucky I even talk to you. Tho I can't help but feel she's just acting, nevertheless that doesn't stop me from having fantasies of b*tch slapping her.'' Kushida crushed the juice box she was holding to emphasize her point.

''Then there's ' no friends Onodera', who wouldn't stop yammering about the color yellow. I just asked her why she wore a yellow dress, I didn't need to know a damn college thesis statement!'' she started scratching her hair probably from stress. ''And don't even let me get started on Ike and Yamauchi--''

With my back against the wall, I attentively listened to whatever Kushida had to say to me, even though it made no sense; I just liked hearing her trivial concerns. I was just fascinated by how different her mind is from her actions. She truly has two different personalities.

After a few more minutes of this and that, Kushida was breathing hard, she must've put her heart and soul into telling me everything.

''Does talking about it make you feel better?'' I asked the two-faced girl.

''Not really,'' She scowled and threw the juice box far away. I didn't bother making a comment about her blatant contribution to pollution.

''Then let me rephrase that, does having me listen to your problems make you feel better?''

''Mmm.. I'm not sure. I guess so.'' Kushida shrugged and glared at the ground, as if she couldn't decide what to say.

''Well, I'm glad I could be of assistance.'' I picked up the juice box so I could properly dispose of it on my way out. ''Let's get to the main event, shall we? Did you do what I asked?''

Kushida narrowed her eyes, and looked all around to scan her surroundings, ''Wait... were you being serious?''

I just stared at her with an unreadable expression. Kushida sighed and crossed her arms. ''I'm going to need a few more days...''

''Sure no problem, take all the time you need, and by that I mean, you only got three days. Capisce?'' I said, placing my hand on her head and patting her on the head. She used to hiss or frown at me, but I believe she's become used to it. Because she stood there, looking at the concrete ground, taking it like a domesticated feline.

l wonder what I should do with her next.

"By the way Kushida, I'm still new around the school. If you don't mind me asking, do you know a good place to get a drink around here?"

"Coffee or...?" She started asking.

"Any would work. As long as it's peaceful," I said with still ruffling up her hair.

Chewing at her lip, the woman pointed back the way of the alley. "Down that way. The Winged Horn," she said. "If you're looking for a less popular cafe, that is."

"Thanks," I said, giving one last head pat. Then I turned and walked in the direction she suggested. And just like that, we both went on our separate ways. One of Kushida's high points is that she's smart enough to break off without being clingy.

She walked past me, and right when she left, my gentle mask darkened, and strands of hair fell on my eyes.

Time to deal with the lamb that strayed away from her fence and into the wolf's den.

[Matsushita POV]

It was already 8 o'clock, and I should be sleeping. But I can't help but notice that Ayanokouji is still active and well. I can typically tell where he is in real time by using the tracker on everyone's phone. I'm not sure why the school has such an app; I'm very sure it's a violation of privacy.

But oh well, it works out for me.

I arrived at a secluded location after following the red dot on the map. It was an outdoor cafe lighted by candles well contrasted against a night sky. Slowly walking, I came to an oval table whose occupants were getting up to leave. I'm not sure what brought Ayanokouji to it, but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

According to the map he is nearby.

''Do you play?'' A voice asked from behind me. It was a deep coldness I felt in my chest.

I turned and found Ayanokouji, sitting in one of the outdoor cafe seats. There was a deck of cards on his table, and a quarter filled glass of what I assume to be coffee.

As I stared, he took a sip from his glass, licking his lips clean. ''Cards, do you know how to play them?'' Ayanokouji said while shuffling the decks.

I could feel that he was testing me somehow, which made me a bit nervous-but I didn't want him to know.

So, I smiled and said, "If you are willing to teach."

If he wants to play mind games then so be it, two can play that game.

He lifted a dark brow as he paused shuffling. He took another drink, before motioning to the empty chair in front of him. As I walked over to sit down, he gestured for me to stop. Getting up, he pulled the chair for me, just like the gentlemen from the movies.

Before he goes back to his own seat, he pauses and studies my face for a bit. The only light illuminating the place was the moonlight and the light from the cafe windows.

''I don't know if anyone's ever told you this'', he begins. He doesn't blush, and his eyes don't dart away. Instead, I find myself staring into a pair of gold eyes. ''You're very attractive.''

Guh-! T-That was so random!

I've been complimented on my appearance before. But never in his tone of voice. Of all the things he's said, I don't know why this catches me off guard. But it startles me so much that I couldn't think of a response.

Wait no, this Psychological warfare game, it has already begun.

Which means I must play along!

"I could say the same about you," I said with a confident smile before pausing. "In case you didn't know."

He's probably in a state of panic right now. It'll be entertaining to see his calmness shatter with a little teasing. I was confident in my capability to get into other people's heads, regardless of how much of a logical person or academic genius Ayanokouji is.

He blinked before leaning down to whisper. "Oh, trust me. I know.''

My blood heated to an impossible level, making me hot all over. I squeezed my crossed legs together and clenched my hands into fists to keep from fidgeting under his gaze. Up close I could make a proper assessment of his appearance.

He is handsome in a dark way-in a way that promised heartbreak. His eyes were the color of cold gold and his brown hair was kinda messy. To be perfectly honest, he seems like the type of guy you have one-night stands with, but never a relationship.

When my chest started to ache, I realized I had been holding my breath since he approached. Slowly, I drew in air-

"It's brave to sit down at a table without knowing the game." He says while sitting back in his chair.

I met his gaze. "How else would I learn?"

"Hmm." He considered. "Clever." The man stared like he was trying to place me, and I shivered. "I have never seen you in this part of town before."

Ayanokouji was in a cafe on the remote corner of Keyaki mall, which most first-year students avoid. They are only interested in what's in the center. That's where all the fun spots are after all: Karaoke, arcade, shopping stalls and etc. Ayanokouji seems to like the peaceful spots instead, where he can be alone. It sorta suits him somehow.

Well, I can't exactly say I got here because I was following him.

"Well, I have never been here before," I said and paused. "You must come here often."

He shrugged. "Not really, it's my first too. But I do intend to come here regularly from now."

"Why?" I asked. The question surprised him and me-I hadn't actually meant to say that out loud. "I mean-you don't have to answer that."

"No, it's fine. I will answer it," he said. "If you will answer a question for me."

I stared at him for a moment, and then nodded."Fine."

"I come here because it is... peaceful," he said while staring at the stars, but it didn't sound like he knew what that 'peaceful' was. "Now you-why are you here tonight?"

"Me, Satou, and two other girls went shopping together, and then we--," I said, but got interrupted.

"No," he said. "That is the answer to a different question. Why are you here tonight?"

Wait... does he know? That I had been following him?

I guess I can lie my way out of it. Humans are natural lie detectors, so the best way to bypass that is to mix little truths within the lies.

I considered his question, and then said. "I guess... I was curious."

"You don't sound so sure?"

"Oh, I am sure it is curiosity," I said while I dragged my finger along the surface of the table. "I'm just not sure if it is a good use of my time."

" Who are you curious about?"

I couldn't help but notice that he used ' who'. Any normal response would've been 'what are you curious about?'

I lightly gulped, as my heart started beating. I looked at him and smiled. " You said one question."

He leaned against the chair and his gaze matched mine and it made my heart beat harder in my chest. "So I did."

Seriously not even a stutter or a surprised look? Still, I'm confident he's no match for me in my specialty. Psychological warfare. Unfortunately... his calm demeanor and his relaxed behavior simply served to heighten the tension.

Staring back at those endless eyes, I felt he could see through my lies-and it made me shiver.

"Are you cold?" he asked.

"What?"

"You've been shivering a lot since you sat down," he observed.

I felt my face redden and I suddenly blurted, "I...think I should go."

He stopped me with a hand on mine. His touch was cold, and I gasped at the contact, pulling away quickly.

"No," he said, almost commanding, and I glared at him.

"Excuse me?"

"What I mean to say is, I haven't taught you how to play yet." His voice lowered and it was mesmerizing. "Allow me."

It was a mistake to hold his gaze because it was impossible to say no. I swallowed and managed to relax. "Then teach me."

His eyes burned into me before falling to the cards. I suddenly became aware of how weirdly intimate this moment was, with just the two of us in an empty cafe under the stars. He shuffled the cards, explaining, "This is poker."

I noted that he had graceful hands and long fingers. Does he play piano?

"We will play five-card draw and we'll start with a bet."

I looked down at myself-does he want to bet using our private points? But Ayanokouji was quick to say, "A question answered, then. If I win, you will answer any question I pose, and if you win, I will answer yours."

I grimaced. I knew what he was going to ask, but answering questions was far better than losing all my money and courage. Not to mention this was a high-risk high-reward kinda thing, and I have a chance to understand him, so I said, "Deal."

His eyes seemed to glow in the dark, which only made him look more attractive. Who is this man?

I had planned to keep my eyes on him. Of course, it's not because I like him or anything... I mean, I'm not naive, so I know there might be a possibility of that happening in the future... But I don't have any strong feelings for him right now. I'm more interested in learning about Ayanokouji Kiyotaka's abilities.

He explained that, in poker, there were ten different rankings, the lowest being the high card and the highest being the royal flush. The goal is to draw a higher rank than the other player. He explained other things, like checking, folding, and bluffing.

"Bluffing?"

"Sometimes, poker is just a game of deception...especially when you're losing." Ayanokouji dealt each of us five cards. I looked at my hand and tried to remember what he had said about the different ranks. I laid my cards down, face up and he did the same.

"You have a pair of queens," he said. "And I have a full house."

"So...you win," I said.

"Yes," he replied, and then claimed his prize immediately. "Who are you curious about?"

I smiled wryly. "You."

He raised a brow. "Why?"

"You'll have to win another hand if I'm going to answer."

So, he dealt another and won again. This time, he didn't ask the question, just looked at me expectantly. I sighed.

"Because...I find you interesting."

He stared at me, waiting, and I smiled. "You never said the answer had to be detailed."

His eyes met mine, and even though he looked the same as always, I felt as if he was enjoying himself. "Noted for the future, I assure you." He sighs.

"The future?"

"Well, I hope this isn't the last time we'll play poker."

Butterflies erupted in my stomach. He dealt again and won. I was getting tired of losing and answering this man's questions. Why was he so curious of me anyway? What does he hope to gain from it?

"Why are you interested in me?" He asked.

I considered this question for a moment, and then said, "I'm curious about who Kiyotaka Ayanokouji is. How far can your abilities take you? I may be a brilliant student, but you are almost certainly oceans ahead of me. It's kinda scary to think there might be more students like you in this school," I dropped my gaze to the cards, and then said, "I don't understand why people even do this."

He tilted his head, as if questioning. "You mean gambling? Are you not enjoying our game?"

"I am," I said. "But...I don't understand why people even gamble. Why do they want to risk everything, when the chances of winning are so low?"

"They don't gamble because they want to risk everything," he said. "They do it because they think they can win."

"What about you? Did you ever lose?" The question was meant to remain a thought in my head, and yet the words slipped out between my lips. He looked amused, and I could feel it deep in my gut.

"Never," He shifted in his seat, before staring at me with clear intent. "However, when you think about it, everyone is a gambler at heart. After all, life is a game of chance, and nothing is set in stone. Consider yourself... you are currently gambling with your luck, wondering how long it would take you to get caught.''

"W-What do you mean," My eyes went wide, and my heart stuttered.

''You can skip that act." His eyes darkened, but I couldn't tell if it was good or bad, and his face was a hard, unreadable mask. ''Little Ms. Stalker.''

As distress coached throw my veins, I couldn't think straight.

"I have to go." I spun around and started to leave in a panic. This time, he didn't stop me.

''I would implore you to remain seated,'' It was a polite sentence, delivered in his usual tone. But there was something about it that made me feel threatened; my intuition told me something horrible would happen if I didn't do what he said.

I slowly walked back to my seat, but my body was tense.

''Good girl,'' he said while shuffling the cards again, but wasn't looking at me. ''I read somewhere that when you reach a certain level of fame, it is natural to have stalkers. Surely I haven't reached that far, did I? Unless, this just happens to be one of your little hobbies, Ms. Stalker.'' He joked.

''...'' I remained silent.

''Not in the mood for a conversation, I see,'' He sighed but he didn't look disappointed. ''Did you know I was in search of someone of your... expertise? Let's just say you fit the job criteria. What do you say, Matsushita, would you like to do a little job for me?''

''Do I have a have a c-choice...?'' I said softly.

''Well, that's an idiotic thing to say, of course you have a choice.'' He scoffed like I said something stupid. ''You always have a choice, everyone does. Humanity was born to be free. That's what makes us special.''

''So the question you should be asking isn't 'Do I have a choice?', it's 'what will happen if I say no?''

I gulped. ''W-What will happen if I say... no?''

''Well, I'm glad you asked Matsushita,'' Ayanokouji said, reaching into his pockets and pulling out his phone. In front of me, he scrolled through his photo album until he found what he was looking for. When I got sight of those photos, nervous sweat began to trickle from my brow.

To be more specific, they were all images of a pretty brown-haired girl. Me. They were taken at all of the locations where I was stal-observing Ayanokouji. He must've taken them in secret when I wasn't looking. But I was positive he had never even noticed me; had he been aware from the start?

''How long did you know?'' I asked with wide eyes.

''Since the beginning,'' he replies calmly. ''Although I'm flattered with getting the attention of a beautiful girl such as yourself, you should probably find a new hobby.''

Even though the situation was still tense, I couldn't help but blush.

''I will send you the details of your job, via our phone. Ofcourse I must ask you to delete everything after you receive it. And just in case you think you can pull a fast one on me by using evidence, here take a look at this,'' Ayanokouji held out his phone, and it was another picture.

When I saw it with my bare eyes, my blood ran cold.

It was a close-up photo of me sound asleep in my bed with the lights turned off. The only way someone could only have obtained a shot like that was if they broke into my flat in the middle of the night without me knowing and stood 3 meters away from me.

I sat perfectly still, not even daring to move a muscle. My mind began to generate solutions for how he could have obtained that, but everything came up blank. And, to be frank, I was too terrified to even ask him.

Something told me, that the less I know the better.

Ayanokouji must've liked how scared I looked, cause he raised his phone and casually took a picture of me, the phone's camera flash broke me from my daze.

''H-H-How...''

''I will call you when I need you. Don't worry it will be soon. Very soon.'' He sat back in his chair in a confident manner. ''Off you go now.''

When I got his permission I immediately hurried down the winding steps and headed toward the direction of my dorm. All the while, I was highly aware of Ayanokouji staring at my back. Was it an exaggeration to say it burned?

Was he amused at my panicked state, or was he indifferent? I don't know which one is worse?

It took me a long while to get to my dorm, but once there, I pushed through the doors. I took a few big breaths within and then let the impact of what had just happened hit me. I immediately scan my entire room, every nook, and cranny, for any hint. A secret camera perhaps, a flaw with the security locks, anything at all. But I found nothing.

Even though, I felt like I had full control over the situation. I couldn't be further than the truth. But that wasn't the worst part. No, the worst part is that there was a side of me-a side I'd never know existed until tonight-that even after everything that just happened-still wanted to know more about him.

Vol.1. Chapter 2.2: Swimming class (gone wrong!)

[A/N Yes, the title sounds like a cringy youtube prank video, but I couldn't come up with a title]

-

[ Kiyotaka Ayanokouji POV]

[Location- Boy's changing room]

"Whew, man! I was looking forward to today so much that I barely slept last night!" Ike exclaimed excitedly.

"Ah ha ha! This school is just the best, isn't it?! It's awesome that we get to have swimming classes with girls?!" Yamauchi agrees.

Oh. It's the day we're going to the pool, so no wonder they are acting like troglodytes. Still, It's understandable that the boys were ecstatic. Even by high school standards, this will be a rare sight. Horikita, Kushida, and every other girl in our class will have a lot of skin exposed.

But I can't help but feel they are up to something.

'' Gentlemen,'' I got between them and placed a hand on both their shoulders. ''You see, I have a natural nag for detecting trouble, and you fellas seem to be radiating a lot of it. Mind filling me in on your excitement?''

Ike and Yamauchi looked at each other before turning to me.

''It starts with a 'B' and ends with an 'S', BOOBS!'' Yamauchi nodded.

"The Professor will rank the breast sizes of the girls for us. If we're lucky, he'll snap some photos on his phone." Ike explained. "The boys and I are also betting on who has the biggest boobs in our class."

''My money is on Kushida,'' Yamauchi said a bit too excitedly.

I don't necessarily condone such behavior, mainly cause they are putting too much effort into something trivial. But as long as it doesn't directly or indirectly involve me, I couldn't care less.

"I see... Alright, count me out. Sounds very counterproductive." I replied, putting my arms up in the air before walking away. ''And in case you are wondering, Haruka has the biggest breasts.''

"C'mon, dude! This might be your only chance to get some juicy photos of the girls!" Yamauchi implored.

''Yeah, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.'' Ike continued.

''Sorry, it's not my style of doing things. If I'm ever that curious about a women's breast, I would rather invite a girl over and have a nice dinner with candles and everything. While washing it down with a '1985 Château Corton Grancey vintage red wine'before getting all funky in the bedroom."

''...''

[Location- Swimming Pool]

"Hey, don't you think Sudou would make an excellent guard dog?" I asked the black-haired girl standing beside me. I was sitting on the pool's edge, my feet dangling midway in the cool water. The pool was temperature-controlled so I didn't have any problems with the water being too cold.

From my line of sight, I could see Sudo swimming laps across the pool. I always wanted to own a dog, much like Hades and his three-headed Cerberus.

''What are you blabbering about?... And what's with your aloof attitude.'' Horikita glared at me. ''Didn't you boast about being Class D's savior or was that just empty promises?'' She tucked a loose strand of her black hair behind her ear. I had the impression she was looking down at me from her vantage point.

I couldn't help but admire her one-piece swimsuit.Horikita's physique was immaculate. She was unquestionably gifted with superior genetics. Especially since every time I look at her, the first thing I catch are those thighs that looked unnaturally soft. Of course, I kept those thoughts to myself.

''There isn't much I can do right about now, other than making them behave. Plus this is just the first month, so we can take our sweet little time. Rome wasn't built in a day after all.'' Realizing the sun was getting in the way, I took out a pair of sunglass from my pockets and wore them. ''Besides, don't you think there is more to life than just school?''

''More to life... What are you implying?'' Although impossible, her frown got even deeper.

''I mean... you are a girl and I am a guy. Surely we can think of a whole bunch of things we can do together.''

Horikita briefly stared down at me with a Pokerface. ''I can't believe I'm putting my trust on someone like you,'' She facepalmed in defeat.

''Don't be shy, I don't bite... unless you want me to.'' I patted the spot next to me, indicating for her to sit beside me. Sadly, it appears that it fell on deaf ears, as Horikita sneered in denial.

But it's still progress. Horikita has been treating me better since my revelation, talking to me more frequently, owing to the observations I had made. She was probably the most affected out of anyone in the entire class of defectives.

''Tch... Just look at them, why do you think they're playing around and acting so lax even though you had told them everything last week." Horikita glanced at the scenery in front of us. The girls and boys who decided to swim were currently frolicking in the pool. Splashing water around and such.

''It's not every day they get to enjoy themselves like this, so why stop them? Fun in itself is a form of escapism. Nobody likes reality, since they have to face the world head-on, however, in these brief moments they can pretend it doesn't exist. And experience a brighter illusion of an already grim world. Frankly, I see nothing wrong with that.''

''You are very weird... you know that right?'' Horikita studied me very carefully, although her perplexed expression makes it seem like she was glaring at me. "Sometimes you act in ways I would never expect a high schooler to act," She complimented me in her own way. ''...And other times you activate a desire in me to stab you with a compass.''

This time I was sure she was glaring at me.

I turned to avoid her glare, accidentally catching the sight of Yamauchi and Ike sulking alone. The majority of the girls had opted not to swim and were instead watching from the observation tower. I sent my silent condolences to them.

I suddenly felt something cold pressing against my cheek.

Looking up I saw Kushida smiling down at me while holding a can of grape juice. She must've bought it from the vending machine since it's still cold.

"Ayanokouji! Horikita too! You're already here! What are you guys doing?" Kushida gleefully called out to us while passing the juice can to me.

I thanked Kushida while opening the juice can and taking a long sip.

The girls are now led by Karuizawa Kei, albeit her social standing is not particularly high at the moment and her title can be easily revoked. Kushida is another possible candidate for this role. Her influence clearly outweighs Karuizawa's. However, knowing Kushida, she won't bother because it will result in some of the girls despising her.

And Kushida likes being the one everyone loves.

''Oops! If I had known you would be here Horikita, I would've got one for you too,'' Kushida stared at the juice can in my hand with a concerned look.

''Don't bother. I wouldn't have taken it even if you had gotten one for me.'' Horikita walked away now that Kushida entered the conversation.

''Sometimes I wish I could stab that b*tch,'' Kushida muttered beside me, her eyes locked onto Horikita's back.

"Be sure to wear surgeon gloves, which are cheap and fingerprint-proof. The last thing you want is to be linked to a crime. Also, because of their sharpness, professional chef knives are ideal for prolonged sessions of torture." I joked.

''...'' Kushida narrowed her eyes at my suggestion of committing first-degree murder.

"Relax, that was a joke, murder is so overrated and unoriginal that anyone can do it, which is what makes it so boring. That reminds me..." I slid my black sunglasses all the way into my hair, acting as a hair band to keep my front bangs in place. ''Are you done with that little favor of mine?''

Kushida nodded and sat down next to me, her feet dangling midway in the pool water like mine.

''His name is Miyabi Nagumo from Class- 2A. Apparently, he's a big deal over there. All the senpai's talked about him with both fear and admiration.''

Kushida took her time scanning her surroundings before moving in close until our shoulders touched and whispered. "I'm guessing you asked me to look into him since he's the vice president. That means he's next in line to be student council president. That implies you want to get rid of him. Am I on the right track?"

''Not really.'' I shook my head.

''But... You still want to get rid of him, right?'' Kushida pressed on.

''Well that depends,'' I shrugged.

''On what?''

'' If I like him or not...Putting that aside'' I wanted to change the subject so I gave her swimsuit a brief glance. ''You look great. Those crimson eyes of yours have a playful charm to them. I envy the man you love." I complimented her.

According to the internet, when you compliment a girl in a swimsuit, you should never mention her body since that comes across as creepy. So I just went with her eyes. It made her smile, even if she knew I was just playing around.

"Kushida-chan!" Ike and Yamauchi yelled.

With her voluptuous figure, Kushida naturally became the center of attention. Even Ike and Yamauchi's depressed looks evaporated in an instant.

''Oh looks like your fans are calling you. Why don't you go and say hi?''I took another small sip, its sweet flavor entering my mouth.

''Tch... I hope those abominable shit goblins would just up and die,'' Kushida mumbled silently while getting up and walking toward them with a bright smile. It was a rather scary sight since her words and face didn't match one bit.

-

-

"Hey, Ayanokouji, why don't you come and play with us instead of just sitting there?" Satou attempted to invite me to join her friend group for a swim. Hirata, Karuizawa, Matsushita, and a few others were among them.

''I wish I could, but I'm not in the mood right now. But don't let that stop you from enjoying yourselves.'' I gently declined her offer.

Suddenly someone's anxious stare instantly bore through me. My eyes naturally found the source, Matsushita. I must've scared her a bit too much the other day. Regardless, I thought it was cute that she was worried about her friend for talking to me, so I gave her a friendly hand wave.

Unfortunately, she immediately submerged herself underwater like a submarine, probably to escape my attention. I just shrugged and took a sip of my drink.

-

-

I went in search of a trash bin because I didn't want to discard my empty juice can anywhere. The closest one was just next to the swimming pool's entrance. While strolling over there I accidentally ran into someone. I quickly apologized and tried to move on. 'Tried' is the key word here.

Cause the person, or rather the girl with the short hair halted me in my tracks.

''Do you workout, Ayanokouji?'' Onodera asked rather excitedly.

''How observant of you. And please, you can call me Kiyotaka.'' I replied curtly.

That was an expected question, seeing how she was carefully observing my body for a while now. She was scanning me up and down. Realizing this conversation will take a while, I tossed the empty can at the trash bin with a sigh, and sure enough, it landed on its target.

Sadly this simple action seemed to impress the tomboy, as her eyes now seemed to glitter.

''Look lady, I appreciate the attention, I really do.'' I sighed once more before grabbing both her shoulders to stop her place. ''But maybe dial down your enthusiasm. I mean, just imagine our roles reversed, and me eying you down the same way. Don't you think I would be branded as a pervert if I did the same?''

Society is really cruel with its double standards.

''But Kiyotaka! All of this is the product of your hard work so shouldn't you show it off. All of us athletes should always admire each other's progress. It's no easy feat after all.'' Onodera exclaimed as if she was delivering a speech to the president.

''Uh...I guess that's one way to look at it.'' Even I was at a loss for words. What's with this girl.

''It's not noticeable when you're-wearing clothes, but your muscles are really toned...I bet you have a lot of endurance." Onodera said, looking at my torso and arm muscles.

For some reason, I suddenly recalled the short conversation I had with Ike and Yamauchi, about asking a girl to dinner.

''Endurance you say... Fear not, I'm quite confident in that department.'' I leaned my face a bit closer. '' In fact, we can test it out if you want, just you and me,'' I'd never done it with a tomboy before. On second thought, I've never done it with any girl before. When it comes down to teenage desires, I suppose she's as good a place to start as any.

''Great idea Kiyotaka,'' She grabbed me by my arm and pulled me to the swimming pool. ''We should compete with each other and see which one of us is faster. Although you seem competent, I'm very confident in my swimming skills.''

''Uh... That's not what I mea-- never mind.'' I stopped myself from saying anything else and simply went with the flow.

I couldn't tell if she was just dumb or if her passion for sports is so great that everything else is oblivious to her.

What a weird girl, but I would be lying if I said I didn't like our talk. It was refreshing, to say the least.

-

-

"Your form was amazing earlier, Kiyotaka! Did you compete during junior high?" Onodera asked excitedly. ''Although I sadly couldn't beat you, we should still do this more often.''

''Uh... sure.. why not?'' Even though I didn't want to swim, she forced me into the pool. So I figured if I showed my superiority by winning fast, she would leave me alone, but that only fueled her competitive side, and she kept asking for a rematch.

"Well, the next time we go swimming, I'm definitely not going to lose to you! You can mark my words!" Onodera made a flexing motion with her biceps.

After finally bidding her farewell I stretched my arms in relief at finally escaping the clutches of the tomboy. She's way too energetic for my taste, but I guess it adds to her charm.

"There you are." Horikita had slipped past most of the class and made her way over to me. However, she paused and suddenly started examining me up and down.

''Ayanokouji, do you worko--''

I instantly put a finger to her lips just to silence her. I really don't want to go through that same conversation once more.

Fortunately, before I say anything else to say to her, our teacher showed up. He was a macho-looking middle-aged man who appeared to have devoted his entire life to sports. He gathered everyone who was taking part and organized us.

"Alright, even though some chose to remain on the sidelines, there are still quite a few of you." I'll let you all do some warm-ups and swimming practice. Following that, you will compete against one another. Isn't that cool?" His wide smile didn't exactly put me at ease, maybe because he has the same vibe as Onodera.

-

-

"Alright I've decided to make things interesting! I'll offer the first-place winner a special bonus of 5000 points. However, the student who finishes last will have to take extra classes. Prepare yourselves." So, even in class, private points are available. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to get some extra allowance.

"Because we don't have enough girls, I'll divide you into two groups of five, and the student with the fastest total time will win. For the boys, I'll look at the top five finishing times before proceeding to the final round."

Needless to say, I wasn't worried about guaranteeing a spot in the finals.

My only true competition would be Hirata, Sudou, and Akito, as the rest of the boys were either incredibly unfit or lacked swimming talent. I suppose even they have their uses; if I ever find myself in shark-infested waters, at least I now know whom to use as cannon fodder.

Of course, there was one other person I need to look out for.

Putting my sunglasses back on to block away from the glare of the sun, I approached the person who had piqued my interest from Day 1. Since the beginning of this class, Kouenji has exuded a commanding presence. He was currently dressed in a crimson speedo, folded his arms, and smiled at his own reflection in the pool water.

When the girls looked at him, they were continuously expressing signs of discomfort. It's presumably because their gaze would be drawn to his crotch reflexively. Aside from that, Kouenji had an incredible physical constitution.

He's certainly stronger than Sudou. He'd probably make a better dog than Sudou, too. But I doubt he can be tamed. Any uncontrollable dog serves no use other than to be euthanized.

''Hey there, we haven't formally met, much less talked, have we?'' I started the conversation.

''Well isn't this an unpleasant surprise. It's Lucifer-boy in the flesh,'' He gave me a brief glance before going back to admiring his reflection in the pool water.

''Lucifer-boy? Oh, is that a nickname for me? I must say I rather like it, it does have a nice ring to it.''

Digging into my pockets I pulled out a spare sunglass I keep just in case, and handed it to Koenji. Without saying a word or any hesitation he put it on. We both peered ahead, arms folded, watching our classmates swim. From an outsider's perspective, we probably look like secret agents on a mission. If that mission somehow involved staring at girls in swimsuits?

''So Lucifer-boy, mind telling me the occasion? If you are here to admire my beauty as well, I suggest you stand in line. Although I must warn it, it's quite long.'' Koenji said without looking at me.

''You think quite highly of yourself. I like that.'' I replied sarcastically. ''I just thought we could be friends.''

''Ha Ha Ha HA! Surely you jest.'' Koenji laughed with vigor. ''You aren't even worthy to be my friend.''

While we were talking the girls started their race, Horikita was in the first group of five girls to go first. When the whistle blew, five of the girls jumped into the water. Horikita was racing in the second lane. She gained the lead at the start of the race and retained her distance from the others, staying at the front of the pack.

"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man. True nobility is being superior to your former self." I told him a random motivational quote I found on the internet. Even I myself don't buy into it.

''Heh! That's nothing but utter nonsense. I am, after all, the perfect existence.'' Koenji ran his fingers through his hair elegantly.

I watched asHorikita swam boldly, covering the fifty meters with ease. Her time was about 29 seconds, which is fast for a high school girl. Horikita slowly exited the water and walked to the side, not even appearing to be out of breath.

"Wow, I used to believe I was a narcissist, but you definitely win that title. I would never claim to be perfect, simply because I am well aware of all of my flaws."

''Ha ha! That just further proves your unworthiness of being my friend.''

''I suppose you aren't wrong.'' I shrugged. ''One of my biggest flaws is the fear of becoming so sexy that the human race can't handle it and everyone dies.''

''...'' He made no comment.

In the next batch of girls, Kushida finished second with a time of 32 seconds, a considerable lead in a swimming competition. However, she lost to Onodera and her impressive 28 seconds. This leads us to the main event with Onodera against Horikita.

''Who do you bet is gonna win?'' I slightly lowered my sunglasses with a finger, so my eyes are visible through the gap.

''Isn't it obvious, Lucifer-boy.'' He answered with that cocky grin of his, without looking at me.

When Sensei blew his whistle for the final round, Onodera took the lead by a landslide. She wasn't kidding about her pride as an athlete. Onodera easily won first place with Horikita in second place. They were then followed by Matsushita and Kushida. Onodera even went the extra mile by beating her previous time by finishing in 26 seconds, improving her previous mark by 2 solid seconds.

''A little bird told me that she used to be in the swimming club in her previous school, so she clearly has a body designed for swimming.''

[A/N Every time he mentions 'little bird' just know he is talking about Kushida]

"That much is clear just by looking at her." Even though Koenji was examining her attentively, I could tell there was nothing perverted about it, he was basically calculating her capabilities with the information he can see.

''True...,'' I said, pausing. '' I betshe's never kissed a boy before.''

''Indeed,'' As expected of Koenji, even though our conversation went in an unexpected direction, it didn't faze him one bit. He even nodded with his usual smirk.

-

"Alright boys, line up! Get your asses in here! It's finally your turn!" Sensei called with a smile.

Me and Koenji went up to our starting locations with boundless swagger, throwing both of our sunglasses at the same time. If this were an action film, there would most likely be massive explosions happening behind us.

''You ready?''

''I was born ready Lucifer-boy.''

[3rd Person POV]

[Location- The White Room]

''You are responsible for the director's son, got it?" the guard in the custom made white army getup made his way through the all white corridors, followed by a beautiful women in her early 20s.

The women who wore a long white trench coat, had her pretty crimson hair tied in a bun.

''Wait the director put his own son on this project?'' The redhead appeared surprised to hear about the director's ruthlessness.

''Aye, that's the kind of man your boss is.'' The guard took a left turn ''Let me ask you again, are you sure you are not in the wrong place.''

''Nope~ I'm definitely in the right place.'' Camilla smiled.

Seeing a smile so innocent, in a place so grim, sent mixed feelings to the guard. He was momentarily frozen in place. In fact, he hasn't seen a single spec of a smile since he started working here. He wondered how long it would take for that smile to disappear like many others in this place.

Before Camilla could knock on the boy's room, the guard blocked her path.

''Listen lady, I would probably get in a lot of trouble for telling you this, so keep it between us. I suggest you pick some other child other than him, or better yet find a job someplace other than here.'' The guard warned.

''And why's that...''

''That boy... let's just say he's special... all his previous therapists quit before they even made it a full week.''

''Oh a challenge! I like that!'' Camilla eagerly nodded, not backing down.

''Well, don't say I didn't warn ya.'' The guard sighed and tipped his cap, before turning around.

Just as the door to the room opened, Camilla strode in. There was a lone boy sitting on the white bed, in fact, everything was white. This place lacked a fashion taste, thought Camilla. The small brown-haired boy who looked like he was 12 years old didn't even glance at her.

''Heya~ YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD THERAPIST HAS ARRIVE--!''

''You are too noisy. Shut up if you value having a jaw for the rest of your life'' The boy who was reading a book with a bored expression growled.

Camilla looked at the boy, optimistic that she can still help him. But there was now visible sweat dripping from her forehead.

''Now, now, that's no way to talk to your elders.''

''...''

''Don't just ignore me?!''

The boy continued to read his book while refusing to acknowledge the women. Camilla, on the other hand, saw this as trivial, as she patiently waited for the boy's response with a hopeful smile.

Minutes pass by, but the therapist showed no signs of giving up.

''You're not gonna leave me alone, are you?'' The boy asked without looking at her.

''NOPE!~''

The boys' first impression of her was that she was an idiot. Animals who are blind to imminent danger are the first to go extinct. He sighed in annoyance, realizing she wouldn't leave until she got her response. Taking his eyes away from his book, at last, he began talking.

''My name is...''

[ Kiyotaka Ayanokouji POV]

[Location: School Pool]

"Group A form a line," Sensei yelled. The first four boys proceeded to the starting line to get ready.

This would likely be an intriguing match for the boys because there are two athletic players in this group compared to the rest. Hirata and Akito.

Hirata was more than simply a pretty boy. He was also physically fit. His physique is slightly superior to Akito's, owing to his involvement in the Soccer Club.

"Alright, get set! GO!" Sensei yelled right as the boys dove into the water and swam at full speed; Hirata and Akito were mostly evenly matched.

"Kyah~! Go, Hirata!"

"Hirata, we believe in you!" Cheers broke out from the girls, whether they were by the pool or on the observation deck.

Even with my cold heart, I felt a bit bummed out about the lack of cheers for Akito, so I sent my silent applause to him.

Hirata sped up near the end for one last burst and narrowly defeated Akito. Everyone was so preoccupied with their small war that they had forgotten about the other candidates. As Hirata and Akito got out of the pool, they exchanged handshakes and turned to face the others.

Ike was dead last, no surprise there. He even fell on his feet, breathing hard from swimming so much.

When everyone finished the instructor announced the results. Hirata won with 27 seconds.

-

The previous participants all walked away from the finish line, while Group B prepared to begin. They dove in, but I wasn't very thrilled about the race because it was so one-sided.

Sudo was the first person to exit the swimming pool. A predictable outcome.

Even beating Hirata's score by finishing in 25 seconds.

Yamauchi was the last to finish with an impressive 42 seconds, I'm pretty sure none of the girls scored nearly as bad as that.

Regardless, Yamauchi flexed his chest and I overheard him remark something like "Hehe, you guys are lucky I was holding back to give everyone a chance. Back in junior high, people called me 'the flying fish,' you know."." He was clearly bluffing, but it was amusing to watch?

Every king needs a court jester I suppose?

-

"Group C! Form a line!" Sensei blew his whistle.

The following group is the one in which Koenji is involved. Looking at his body, he proved to be more athletic than Sudo; another one-sided massacre. It's also my first opportunity to understand why he calls himself the "perfect existence."

"Begin!"

They dove into the pool, and it was once again an extremely predictable win. Kōenji dove perfectly as his body cut through the water. He effortlessly swam across with speed, placing him ahead of everyone by a long shot, with the rest following behind.

He got out of the water without even looking at the other contenders. Taking out a comb from God knows where, he began fixing his hair with a smug smile. The rest of them exited the pool after a few seconds.

Koenji won by a wide margin, with 23 seconds, which caused audible gasps all around the pool at his impressive score. Though I suspect he was still holding back.

If given the opportunity, I'm curious if Koenji can break the world record. Mmm... I suddenly had the impulse to track down the swimming world record holder and beat his own record in front of him. I'm curious how depressed he'd be if he realized his life's hard work could be replicated by a high schooler. He would definitely become a chronic alcoholic just to deal with it.

I̶ ̶h̶o̶p̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶y̶ ̶i̶n̶v̶i̶t̶e̶ ̶m̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶f̶u̶n̶e̶r̶a̶l̶

-

"Last group line up!"

We formed a line, and I took one glance at my opponents, none of them are very athletic. I can take it easy.

"Kyah~! Ayanokouji! Good luck!" I heard Satou yelling. That girl's a bit much.

"Ayanokouji-kun, give it your all!" Many of the girls cheered for me, just like they did for Hirata. I can see Ike, Yamauchi, and several of the boys looking at me with jealous eyes in my line of sight.

I wasn't really expecting cheers when it was my turn, but it's not like I was complaining, so I just shrugged it off. I even went along with it by waving at them.

''GO!'' Sensei blew his whistle.

The classmates around me jumped into the pool and started off quite slowly, but gradually gained speed. While I silently stood there.

''H-Huh why is he just standing there?''

''Ayanokouji! The race already started-!''

I was still casually waving back at the girls.

After a solid 7 seconds, I got in position and decided to join the race.

My plunging figure sunk neatly into the water. When I started utilizing my limbs for momentum, I could feel the others nearby. My ears were filled with the sound of my classmates' cheers at the same time.

I won the race by swimming with complete consistency. Once I got to the finish line and looked back, the others were only behind by a few seconds.

I finished it in 30 seconds, if I hadn't given myself that 7seconds handicap, mine, and Koenji's score would've been tied.

"Kyah~! No way! He still won!"

"Ayanokouji-kun was super fast!"

"He looked so cool too~!"

''Yes, yes, praise me more.'' I said nonchalantly in my monotone voice, basking in their cheers, while walking to the final race.

-

The instructor directed the four victors to form a line. Me, Hirata, Sudo, and Kouenji were the finalists. I turned my gaze to the person standing next to me.

''We meet again Koenji,'' I called out to my blonde classmate beside me.

''So we did,''Kouenji remarked, not looking at me. He must be very confident. Kouenji, like me, does not appear to be serious about competing. But hopefully, he won't hold back this time. ''I hope you don't disappoint me Lucifer-boy.''

''Feelings mutual.'' I got into position. ''Don't hold back.''

''HA HA! That goes without saying. It's time to show you why I'm called the perfect exsitance.''

The coach sounded his whistle, and the race was underway. Kouenji could be seen flying through the water in the corner of my eye, keeping pace with me the entire time. The other two had fallen far behind, leaving just the two of us to race. The water was rushing past my head, faster than I had ever swum before, through the chilly liquid.

I got to the finish line almost simultaneously with Kouenji, tapping the wall. We both climbed out of the pool and turned to face the coach. The other two had just finished a few seconds after us.

All the spectator's eyes were on Kouenji and me since it was a tie.

Suspense riddled the air as everyone waited for the results.

''Since it's a tie, it all depends on the milli-seconds. ''Sensei checked his stopwatch. ''Koenji finished with a perfect 21.9 seconds. Very impressive!''

"And Ayanokouji... 21.4 seconds!!" Everyone froze when they heard those comments, including Kouenji, before he broke his stance and began laughing.

"Hmph," Kouenji said, elegantly sweeping his hair up. He didn't appear exhausted at all. He gave me a friendly smile this time. "Remember this Lucifer-boy, you only won because I lost."

I was also softly swiping my hair at the moment. ''Yes, and Every 60 seconds in Africa, a minute passes.''

He walked away with his usual smirk, not even a little bit bothered. From the corner of my eye, I sawHorikita taking a quick step toward me. She finally came to a halt directly in front of me.

''You never told me you were an expert in swimming,'' She glared at me.

''You never asked,'' I shrugged. ''Plus I wouldn't call myself an expert, it's just a pass-time for me.''

"It seems there's more to you than meets the eye..." Horikita lowered her gaze to her feet. Kushida and her friends hurried over to me excitedly before she and I could finish our talk.

"Ayanokouji, you were incredible!" Kushida said with a big grin.

"Kyah~! Ayanokouji! You were amazing!" Please don't faint Satou.

''I knew there was something special about you, Kiyotaka.''Onodera was the most enthused of the group. ''We should definitely have a rematch.''

In fact, the boys did the same thing as the girls. Some of them even patted me on the back. They bombarded me with questions, and my mind immediately went empty.

Coming up with fake backstories on why I can swim fast sucks.

[3rd Person POV]

[After class]

''Kushida looked so hot in that suimsuit~'' Yamauchi said.

''If she becomes my girlfriend, I can die happy.'' Ike agreed.

They were fully changed back to their normal school uniform. Standing next to the vending machine they were discussing all sorts of trivial things.

''It sucks that she's only been looking at Ayanokouji recently,'' Ike sulked with his shoulders slumped. ''I mean it's already hard with Hirata, but now the class has two pretty boys.''

''That guy? Pfft... he was lucky I didn't show my full potential during swimming class. Flying fish, remember.'' Yamauchi bragged.

''Sure dude,'' Ike humored him.

''I mean what does Ayanokouji have that I don't?''

''Uhh...Yamauchi..'' Ike warned

''I swear to God, he's been getting on my nerves recently. If I see him I'm going to beat him to a pulp to show him whose boss!''

''D-Dude!!'' Ike was looking at someone behind Yamauchi.

''He's right behind me isn't he,'' Yamauchi said in a grim tone. Looking back he found Ayanokouji standing there with his hands in his pockets.

''A-Aaah,'' He fell down on his butt, due to the sudden surprise.

''You okay?'' Ayanokouji politely reached a hand down to help Yamauchi up. Speak of the devil.

He didn't appear to be affected by anything Yamauchi stated. He either didn't hear him or simply didn't care enough to bother.

Seeing the guy whose been the center of attention of the girls for no reason than being a fast swimmer annoyed Yamauchi. Mostly cause Kushida was also one of them. So he decided to do a little prank as an act of revenge.

''Thanks for helping me out, Ayanokouji old buddy old pal!'' Yamauchi accepted his hand and got you. ''Since I owe you why don't I buy you a drink?''

''No need,'' Ayanokouji declined.

''No worries dude, it's my treat,'' Yamauchi ordered a Coca-Cola as soon as he entered his student ID into the vending machine. He turned his back on Ayanokouji and shook the can vigorously, hiding from view.

''Here you go dude,'' Yamauchi tossed the can to Ayanokouji.

Since the can was shaken so much the carbonation pressure caused liquid to explode all over Ayanokouji the moment he popped it open. The viscous liquid staining his clothes. Of course Yamauchi was well aware of it, that's the only reason he gave it to him.

''Ha ha! Oh man, you should see the look on your face.'' Yamauchi had to grasp his stomach in order to suppress his laughter.

Ayanokouji's wet hair bangs were covering his eyes, so it was hard to tell what expression he had underneath it.

''Heh! I definitely need a picture to remember this~'' Yamauchi took out his phone to do exactly what he said.

Ayanokouji slicked his now-wet hair back with his hand. Maybe because Yamauchi was too busy laughing, he was completely oblivious to the dark look Ayanokouji was giving him. Even Ike, who was nervously chuckling in the corner, saw Ayanokouji's sudden change and gulped.

Hirata who was coincidently walking by noticed the incident and quickly intervened to resolve the situation.

''Ayanokouji you alright?'' He offered him a handkerchief from his pockets.

Taking it gracefully Ayanokouji started wiping his face. ''Thanks? But don't worry it was nothing more than an accident.''

''I'm glad it's a minor accident, but do you be careful next time,'' Hirata said with a warm smile before walking his separate way.

''Yeah Man~ be careful next time,'' Yamauchi walked away still giggling at the incident, with Ike full-on tow.

No one noticed the silent murderous glare Ayanokouji was directing at Yamauchi.

[ Ayanokouji POV]

[Location- Swimming Pool]

''Thank goodness you came,'' I was currently standing in front of the pool. My clothes were changed to a more casual ones. A simple light blue full-sleaved shirt and jeans. It was late afternoon and the entire swimming pool was deserted except for one other person.

My classmate, Haruki Yamauchi.

''That was a weird text you sent me, dude,'' Yamauchi showed his phone which had the text history.

''Well it's kinda embarrassing to admit, but I need advice on girls. And I couldn't help but overhear you being some sort of love expect.''

''Hehe, it seems my secret got revealed,'' He said while awkwardly scratching his hair. ''Back in middle school, I was called the love guru. Even all the senpais came to me for assistance.''

It's almost laughable how easily he lowers his guard to mindless lies.

''Very impressive, as expected of someone like you. With a title like that, you were surely popular in middle school.'' I said sarcastically.

''Well duh,'' He puffed up his chest in pride. ''So what lady troubles do you have? You can ask me anything?''

''Could you give me a second...I need to prepare myself.'' I retrieved my Earpods from my pockets and pulled out my phone to sync with it wirelessly.

''Uh... What are you doing dude?'' Yamauchi tilted his head in confusion.

''Shhh,'' I murmured, still paying more attention to my phone than to my classmate next to me as I pull up my music playlist and thumbed through it to find an appropriate track.

Silence followed.

And there was some sort of tightness in the air, even Yamauchi was beginning to feel it.

"S-Seriously dude, what are you doing? If you wa--''Yamuchi speaks out, completely unsure of what to do.

''Wanna know a fun fact?'' I interrupted him. ''For a school that is so adamant about putting hidden cameras everywhere, there are blind spots. Of course, I made sure to memorize each and every one of those spots. One of them is the very place we are standing on.''

''I guess it makes sense if you think about it. Having cameras pointed at places where you can see half-naked kids seems like a lawsuit in the making. So it's no surprise," I mused.

''OooKay...''Yamauchi replied, however, there seemed to be a hint of anxiousness in his tone. He must be growing nervous now that he realizes we are the only ones in this empty swimming pool.

No students are in close proximity to the pool.

It would probably take 15 minutes for a teacher to reach here.

"Y-You know I just remembered something h-ha ha.. I have plans with Ike to go to the arcade so...'' Sensing a change in the atmosphere, Yamauchi started backing away.

With one last scroll, I found the perfect song to set the tone, to get me in the mood for what I'm about to do.

https/youtu.be/blx7u7PVbZI

Just as Yamauchi expresses his concerns, I find and select the song before tucking my phone in my right pants pocket, and the song begins pumping lyrics into my ears via Earbuds.

''Perfect!''

Pulling my sleeves up to my elbows I turned and approached Yamauchi threateningly.

''Hey man, your eyes look kinda scary right now...W-Whoa!!'' Right before he could take another step back, I kicked the heels of his feet, making him lose his balance.

Just moments before his head could hit the solid tiles of the pool, I grabbed him by the back of his neck and plunged his face into the water. With me kneeling down, and his eyes, nose, and mouth completely buried in pool water; I turned up the volume of the song.

''H-Hey!.. Gasp.. what ar-- Gasp,''

'' Waterboarding, that's the name of the torture technique I'm performing on you. It is also called water torture, simulated drowning, interrupted drowning, and controlled drowning. Just from the names alone, surely you can tell what it entails.'' I replied calmly.

Yamauchi started thrashing inside this invisible prison. He pushed with his arm and legs but he could find no leverage, my hands holding him down.

''A-Aaah.. Gasp...Hah...hah!!'' He tried to yell but the water blocked out any vocal sounds.

Yamauchi fought aimlessly to free himself from my hands, but the only thing he was accomplishing was wasting precious oxygen. His body lacks the strength and endurance needed to overpower me. It's a pointless action.

M̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶'̶v̶e̶ ̶h̶a̶d̶ ̶a̶ ̶c̶h̶a̶n̶c̶e̶,̶

To emphasize this point, I don't even need to use both hands to keep him submerged; my right hand is sufficient.

''Did you know this is my favorite torture method? Since it leaves no physical evidence,'' I shrugged my shoulders. ''But sadly it is still considered inhumane. The CIA removed waterboarding from its list of acceptable interrogation techniques in 2006.'' I said as I pulled his face back to the surface. My dark gaze was riveted on him like a predator on prey.

''B-B-Bro what the h-hell!?!'' He gasped, trying to breathe.

''I'm not your bro,'' I replied in an icy cold voice.

I pushed his face back in the water, and his futile struggle began once more. Like a fish without water, flailing his arm all around.

The human body will die in just minutes without oxygen, so the body struggles mightily when it thinks it is being deprived of oxygen. Evolution has hardcoded the body to restore the supply of oxygen as quickly as it can.

No wonder people are programmed to panic during these situations.

I brought Yamauchi's face back up once more and he painfully gasped for air.

''Let's cut to the chase, shall we?You must be wondering why I'm doing this to you, right?''

Yamauchi visibly reacts to my comment, fear evident in his eyes.

''Is it b-because of the s-s-soda...S-Sorry. I'm S-Sorry.'' His eyes searched the area frantically looking for someone to rescue him. He must've forgotten to scream, due to how stressed he is right now.

''Apology accepted,'' I calmly replied. ''However, there is also the chance that you might tell someone what happened today, right? That makes my decision to let you go so much tougher. Life can be so cruel sometimes.'' I nonchalantly shrugged my shoulders.

''P-Please...I swear..I s-swear... I won't tell another s-soul...''

''Shh, shh, shh. Calm down Yamauchi , I believe you, we are friends after all.''

I loosened my grip around his neck and just like a soldier realizing that reinforcements are coming, relief spread across his face. Just when I saw that tiny glimmer of hope in his eyes, I tightened my grip and submerged his face underwater once more.

I gave him hope, only so I can be the one to take it away from him.

[ Yamauchi POV]

Liar...

He said it "simulates" the feeling of drowning. That is not true at all. I feel like I am drowning because I amdrowning —or, rather, being drowned, albeit slowly and under controlled conditions and at the mercy of this demon.

"Wanna hear something interesting? The instinct to not breathe underwater is so strong that it overcomes the agony of running out of air. No matter how desperate a drowning person is, he doesn't inhale until he's on the verge of losing consciousness.'' He continues to speak to me, most likely to keep me awake. So he can continue to torment me. ''Pretty cool right?''

I held my breath for a while and then had to exhale and—as you might expect—inhale in turn. I gulped down water while trying to breathe and ended up choking and coughing. Somehow he always knows when I can't take it anymore, cause he instantly brings me back up for air.

With the sun shining behind him, I got a good look at him. I expected a look of anger or maybe psychotic enjoyment. But what I saw was 'Pure indifference' like I wasn't worth any emotions being incited. Somehow that disturbed me more.

I knew what was going to happen next so I inhaled as much air as I could. He pulled my face back into the water, darkness obscuring my eyesight.

''There is a popular saying that your life flashes in your eyes moments before you die. I wonder if images of your childhood are flashing right as I speak.'' I heard his voice, but it felt very far away.

Again seconds passed and I couldn't hold my breath anymore. Only this time he wasn't allowing me to come up for air, he held me in place.

''What do you see Yamauchi ? — Maybe the police notifying your parents? Imagine how disappointed your mom and dad will be, how their dreams for you have been shattered with your death.Picture what your father would say, probably something along the lines of "why didn't the damn kid take swimming lessons like he was supposed to?"

Pool water went down into my lungs, causing a surge of intense pain to ricochet off my ribs and around my torso. I desperately needed air. I kicked and tried to get to the surface. No luck. Everything started to hurt and my chest felt like someone stabbing me.

"You know, I think I should be completely honest with you because I believe you deserve it. I'm not doing this to reprimand or discipline you. I'm not some sort of vengeful messiah. Yes, your actions and refusal to apologize annoyed me, but not enough for me to go this far. So why am I doing this?" His grip became even tighter.

'' IT'S BECAUSE I CAN. Nothing more nothing less. There is no deep meaning behind my actions.''

Then, with my last strength, I kicked once more.

"A villain. A true villain must be a thing of power, handled with delicacy and grace. I must be wicked enough to excite everyone's aversion, strong enough to arouse everyone's fear, human enough to awaken some transient gleam of sympathy.''

''I do bad things because I can.

Because I want to.

Andbecause no one can stop me.''

I was not going to make it and I knew it.I barely even understood what he was saying anymore.

Then everything went black.

[ Kiyotaka POV]

I could already feel his body giving up. It grew calm and seemed like it was no longer afraid of death. A few more seconds of this and he'd say goodbye to this world.

Just a few more seconds.

[Flashback]

The first thing I was taught when I reached the age of reason was to doubt others, the only one I could trust in this rotten world was myself.

Even that man who taught me this warned me about placing my trust in him too, since "sooner or later everyone betrays your trust," or so he told me.

I have a complicated relationship with that man, how could I not? He was my father. And even so, I couldn't stop thinking when I heard that.

How hideous would the world have to be for him of all people to say something like that? In a world of 7 billion, I couldn't trust a single one of them, I thought to myself.

''Kiyotaka Ayanokouji , what a beautiful name,'' The lady nodded. ''Hi, I'm doctor Camilla, your personal therapist.''

''Don't need one. Go away.' I said without looking at her. My full attention was still on the book I was reading.

''C'mon don't be like that! I was just got hired. You can't just fire me!'' She complained like a spoiled brat.

'' Therapists guide people through some of the most personal and painful experiences of their lives, helping them overcome depression, live with loss, and stop self-destructive behavior,'' I said while turning a page. ''But I have no such issues. That makes your existence useless to me.''

'''Guh!'' She nervously straitened her shirt. ''Mmm ... If not a therapist, then how about a friend? You can tell me anything you want.''

''Sounds pointless.''

''Hey!!'' She pouted. ''Don't just call the power of friendship pointless?''

My body went on full alert when she walked toward me, but I pretended not to care so I can strike when she least expects it. However, contrary to my expectations she placed a hand on my head.

''Listen... if I can't change a little kid, how do I expect myself to change the world.''

I flinched at her unexpected words. I can usually figure people out just by looking at them, but this woman... was a total mystery to me.

I tried to detect lies in words or body posture. But that was her truth, her belief, and she declared it straight to my face as she caressed my hair, her optimistic smile forever plaguing my memories.

''Holy shit! That sounded waaay cooler than I expected. I should definitely use it in my speech if I win the noble prize'' The lady popped a thumbs up straight to my face, her smile refusing to go away. '' I looked hella cool when I said it didn't I?''

This woman...

''Hey! You better expect me as your friend right now, or I'm gonna have to find ways to annoy you till you do.''

Yup, there is no doubt about it...

''You are...''

-

''...an idiot.''

I can't believe that women, even now, is influencing my judgemnet .

I instantly drew Yamauchi's submerged face from the water. His body lay limp on the swimming pool's tiled surface. He was completely unconscious and not even breathing.

I'm not about to do CPR on him. So with a bit of force, I quickly stepped on the correct spot near his stomach area, and within seconds I jumpstarted his entire body. Yamauchi's eyes sprang open and he immediately started coughing out water.

I casually gathered my Earbuds back in my pockets before crossing my arms and patiently waiting for his coughing fit to end.

After seven minutes or so, his coughing greatly subsided and his breathing stabilized. However, he seemed to be in a daze, like his brain couldn't process what was going on. So I leaned down and slapped him in the face, jabbing him back to the present.

''Yamauchi my dear friend, it seems I went a bit too far. Sometimes I even scare myself.'' I sighed. ''What I'm trying to say... is... why don't we pretend that this never happened?''

He blinked like I was speaking in a foreign language.

I awkwardly scratched the back of my hair. ''So... let bygones be bygones.''

I paused before narrowing my eyes. ''Of course, if I were to hear a single rumor about this ' incident', no matter how small, even if it's just a whisper, you know what happens right?''

I stood over him, looking down, my figure casting a shadow over him. He cowered and failed to meet my eye.

''Your remaining life in this school will be reduced to an unending sequence of agonizing torture. Do I make myself clear?''

Yamauchi nods his head up and down vigorously, without saying a word.

''How delightful.''

Feeling satisfied I squatted down and gently placed both hands on his shoulders. He flinched at my touch.

''Good, very good. Now, with that out of the way how about you, me and the boys go out for lunch today. you know, hang out. I have seen this Italian cafe on the way to school, and I'm kinda curious to try their food. Don't worry it's gonna be my treat.''

Yamauchi sat there with a shocked expression at my sudden change in behavior, no doubt contemplating whether the last two minutes even happened.

He's a weak-minded individual, easily controllable, and exploitable. Not to mention 100% EXPENDABLE.

I̶ ̶a̶l̶w̶a̶y̶s̶ ̶w̶o̶n̶d̶e̶r̶e̶d̶ ̶w̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶i̶t̶'̶s̶
̶l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶o̶w̶n̶ ̶a̶ ̶H̶u̶m̶a̶n̶ ̶s̶l̶a̶v̶e̶.̶

Even if he told someone, no one would believe him.

m̶o̶r̶e̶ ̶p̶e̶r̶s̶o̶n̶a̶l̶i̶t̶y̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶n̶ ̶h̶i̶m̶

Not to mention he was a bad habit of always lying, much like 'The boy who cried wolf' no is going to bat an eye at his antics if he were to betray me.

But as long as he adds today to his list of secrets he would take to his death, I suppose I personally have no issues with him.

After all, the devil's greatest achievement is making the world believe that he doesn't exist.

And I would like to keep it that way.

[TO BE CONTINUED]

[Anyone felt bad for Yamagod ?]

[Don't worry, there won't be any more chapters with such a physical scale for a long while. I personally prefer psychological attacks over flat out violence]

[Yes, Camilla the therapist will return, but only in the form of flashbacks]

Vol.1. Chapter 3.1: Horikita's Golden Ticket to Class A

[A/N Changed the cover page to this one. Thought it would fit the aesthetics of a villain more]

[A/N Also, to be honest, the previous murder attempt by Kiyo doesn't have much significance to the story other than showing how far he is willing to go. I personally find violence to be boring and too predictable. But meh... I just wanted to write a Yamauchi torture scene. ]

[Horikita POV]

My brother always said the way to learn the job you want is to spend every second watching someone else do it.

''Listen Suzune , to get the job at the top, you've got to start at the bottom,'' he told me. ''If you are in a company make sure to become the person the CEO can't live without. Be their right-hand man. Learn their world, and you will become one of them.''

I am in Class D, so one could say I am starting from the very bottom.

And the CEO in question would be the boy sitting next to me. I am supposed to become irreplaceable to him? And I should somehow become his Right Hand? It just so happened that I was the right hand who wanted to slap his damn face most of the time.

My neighbor, Kiyotaka Ayanokouji. That cold Bastard.

We were still in class, the bell for lunch break just rang.

My stomach clenched tightly at the thought of him: tall, good-looking, highly competent, and entirely evil. Why evil you may ask?

''And then I pushed his head back in the water. You should've seen the way he squirmed-'' Ayanokouji was retelling his little secret incident he took part in.

He told me about how he lured Yamauchi to an isolated location with a text message and used a CIA torture method on him just because he rubbed him the wrong way. Yamauchi, the victim in question was currently massaging Ayanokouji's shoulders obediently with a depressed look.

When I asked him about it, Ayanokouji just replied by saying I'm putting him to good use. At least this way, he can still contribute to the class in his own pointless way. Far more productive than him perving out on the girls, wouldn't you agree.

I didn't agree.

''Why in the God's name are you even telling me this.'' I rubbed my forehead in annoyance. We were still in class.

''Why not? I used to have a personal therapist with whom I used to share my day, I guess it became an unhealthy habit of mine. Consider yourself her replacement. Also, Good stories are always meant to be shared. If you have kids someday, make sure to tell them about me, I'm certain they will sleep soundly with sweet dreams of rainbows and butterflies.''

'' Or a nightmare,'' I muttered under my breath, clearly vexed by his lack of self-awareness.

I started packing my bag, to get ready to buy lunch from the cafeteria.

''What about the message you used to lure Yamauchi in. Isn't that evidence?'' I tried finding plot holes in his story.

''I deleted it from his phone, while he was trying to gasp for air, obviously. I'm not an idiot Horikita. I never leave any loose ends in anything I do. If I were to commit a murder, no one would ever know about it. I might as well be the mantle of the next zodiac killer.''

''And yet, here you are, basically confessing your crime to me. What if I told someone?'' I glanced at Yamauchi still massaging his shoulders. Normally he would have an obnoxious grin on his face, but today he looked downright depressed. Not to mention how submissive he is of Ayanokouji, maybe even fear? I don't necessarily know if Ayanokouji said the truth or not, but something clearly happened between them.

''Come now Suzune, we have known each other for so long. And you are going to throw me under the bus just like that?''

''We just met 3 WEEKS AGO! And how many times do I have to warn you not to call me by my first name? I never gave you my permission,'' I growled.

''We are neighbors, it's only natural for us to get along on a socially intimate level,'' he leaned in his seat to relax, but his eyes darkened for a bit. '' Besides, it's your word against mine.''

There it is. That look again. A true wolf in sheep's clothing.

''Need I remind you, I am adored by everyone in the class. People are positively charmed by innate flair and attitude. Don't you agree Yamauchi?''

''Uhh... Yeah..''

''See,'' Ayanokuji pointed at Yamauchi, as if his brainwashed response has any solid point in this debate. ''Now, you, on the other hand, are a loner no one likes. Albeit it is definitely your fault, always pushing people away even when they are trying to be nice to you. You believe you can go through life by your lonesome self, but alas, humans are social creatures. You are the architect of your own misfortune.''

''Now, let's say for argument's sake, you do end up telling the whole class about me. How many do you think are actually going to believe you. That's right, NONE.''

''That's how low your social influence is. However fear not, I'm going to change that part of you.''

Ayanokouji in my eyes is a double-edged weapon. A perfect instrument that can cut enemies, but also has the ability to cut the wielder as well.

''But we can throw all of those out the window because compared to my next point, it might as well be inconsequential.'' He dismissed Yamauchi from massaging his shoulders any longer, and stretched his arms.

''You are currently in a classroom meant for defectives, and I am your golden ticket to the chocolate factory, AKA Class A. And you are smart enough to not let me go or threaten my goals, cause it aligns with yours. So no, I'm not even a tiny bit worried about you telling anyone. ''

''Cause I know you won't do it Suzune .''

Suzune. He uses my first name every time he wants to taunt me. Unfortunately, it works. I clenched my fists in irritation.

[Location-School Cafeteria]

Kiyotaka Ayanokouji

He was the most self-righteous, pompous prick I'd ever met. He flirts like it's a second language to him. Yet anyone perceptive enough can figure out he doesn't mean any of it. Even if warm words exit his mouth, his eyes remain stone cold.

I unintentionally hear all of the other people in the class gossip about his escapades and I can't help but wonder if a nice face was all it took.

But my brother also said, "You realize early in life that beauty is only skin-deep, and ugly goes straight to the bone."

I'd had my fair share of unpleasant people in the past few years, but this one took the cake.

''By the way Horikita, you seem to be in a terrible mood today. Of course, you are like finely aged wine, the longer you are in that state of fury, the more I find you appealing.'' His voice was laced with honey . . . if that honey was left to freeze and crack on ice.

He was walking alongside me as if we were old friends. During lunch, I made my way to the cafeteria, unfortunately, he took that chance to follow me. Normally I make my own lunch at home, but due to groceries getting spoiled way before their expiration date, I had to resort to buying from the cafeteria today.

I gave him my usual glare hoping he would give me his usual curt nod in return and walk away.

He didn't.

And when I tried to slip past him, he murmured, ''By the way, are you and the student council president related?

I stopped and met his cold stare. He was a good couple inches taller than me, I had to tilt my head to look up at him, while he looked down, and he clearly relished it, yellow eyes flashing.

"What made you come to that conclusion?" I said, relieved that my voice came out steady.

''Ah, so you are not denying it. It wasn't that hard really. Both of you have the same 'Horikita' surname. You always seem tensed every time the president is mentioned. And not to mention how alike both of you look. I just put two and two together.''

I remained silent while he stood still, watching every move I made.

''I'm going to meet him right now, wanna tag along?'' He said nonchalantly.

''W-What,'' My voice felt unnaturally dry.

''I put my name in the student council, remember? First years can officially join after a month, and with only two days left in the month, it's no surprise that I received an invitation from the student council. It arrived in the mail for me. I'm guessing it'll be some kind of job interview to finalize their decision."

I couldn't tell if he was lying through his teeth or not, because even though there was a 99 percent chance this was some kind of hoax, there was a 1 percent chance that it wasn't. I didn't realize I was holding my breath until he continued talking.

As if he could read my mind, Ayanokouji spoke again. ''So I figured why not bring you along, you can have a cute little sibling reunion. You would like that wouldn't you?''

I would...

He waited for me to say something else, but I stayed silent. Everything you said or did was a data point you put out there in the world, and I didn't want to give this man any more information than I had to-not until I knew what he wanted from me.

"Giving me the silent treatment huh. How typical of you." Ayanokouji mused. "Well, it doesn't matter either way I suppose. I'm going with or without you.'' He ran a hand through his hair, turned his back to me, and started walking away.

1 second.

...

2 seconds

...

3 sec-I can't do it...

"Wait" It amazed me that my voice stayed every bit as calm and even as his. ''I have decided to accept your offer.''

He gave me a brief glance from the corner of his eyes, but kept walking without checking if I was following him or not. He knew what he was doing-allowing me to come along by explicitly mentioning my brother, because if he'd specified anything else, I would not have gone.

Nine years was a long time to go without getting any acknowledgment from my brother. Without answers. Even though I tried multiple times to track him down or call him since I came to this school.

But the response was always radio silence.

I probably should have refused to meet my brother like this anyway, but I couldn't, for the same reason that I couldn't tell anyone about Ayanokouji's deeds behind the scenes.

Because he is my golden ticket.

-

-

[ Ayanokouji POV]

[Location- Student Council]

I went to the meeting with Horikita. She kept her distance, by walking five meters behind me. Of course, I had no doubt she would scurry along. Mentioning her brother is the equivalent of me bribing a dog with a piece of meat.

But I do wonder what their relationship is like. It doesn't seem normal from the looks of it.

''State your name please.'' The woman in front of the door was in her third year. Her smooth purple hair was pulled back into two neat buns, and the uniform she was wearing was perfectly tailored.

All business, as expected of the student council.

''I'm Kiyotaka Ayanokouji, and back there is Suzune Horikita,'' I pointed without looking.

''H-Horikita,'' Purple hair senpai whispered on her breath.

''In case you are wondering, yes, she is the president's little sister.'' I leaned down to whisper to my senpai.

Normally I wouldn't have bothered mentioning it, but I doubt she would've let Horikita enter without any other reason. I am making her tag along without any clearance after all.

"I see, since it's the president's sister... Go ahead.'' Senpai finally decided. I'm lucky I met this senpai first, it seems she has a crush on the elder Horikita, and is trying to score some good points on her future potential sister-in-law.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it?

I briefly glanced at Horikita from the corner of my eyes. She looked like she had a lot of nervous energy to burn, I snuck another interested glance at her and started piecing my way through her life story, as told by the way she was standing, her clothes, the faint shift in tone in her speech, the clear coat of polish on her nails.

She has an inferiority complex when it comes to her brother.

That's why she looks down on anyone who isn't her brother.

Wants to prove herself to him.

No wonder she was the most upset when she learned she was placed in a class meant for defects.

Spent all her childhood alone, no friends.

Hardly surprising. She hasn't even made a single friend in this school as well. Unless you count me.

Behavior. Personality. Environment. I could practically hear my lessons in the white room coaching me through this impromptu analysis.

"Stop looking at me, just get in already." Horikita's words were brisk, and I added another entry to my mental column- impatient.

-

Obligingly, I stepped into the room. The door closed behind me, and I appraised my surroundings. It looked so ...

normal. If it hadn't been for the security checkpoint out front and the moody purple hair, I never would have pegged this for a place devoted to the student council.

''You look disappointed, were expecting a dog-and-pony show?'' I heard a smooth voice. He sounded amused, and when I turned to face him, there was a smirk dancing its way through his features, his silky blonde hair caught my eye.

''I wasn't expecting anything,'' I told him. ''I have no expectations.''

He gave me a knowing look. ''No expectations, no disappointments.''

I couldn't tell if that was his appraisal of my current mental state or the motto by which he lived his own life. In fact, I was having trouble getting any handle on his personality at all.

''You know,'' he said conversationally, ''I had a feeling you would be interesting.''

I raised an eyebrow at him. ''And why's that?''

He shrugged. ''My inner Boy Scout told me so.''

If this guy had an inner Boy Scout, I had an inner oblivion.

''So, are you here to take us to the student council president?'' I asked. The words came out curtly.

''Hmmmmm.'' In response to my question, Blondie made a noncommittal noise under his breath and inclined his head -as close to a yes as I was going to get. ''I'm Nagumo by the way.''

'' Ayanokouji, and the girl behind me is Suzune.'' Horikita made no comment about me using her first name. Maybe she knew it was better this way, lest we want to get confused with two Horikitas in the same room.

He led us around the bullpen and down a hallway. Neutral carpet, neutral walls, a neutral expression on my criminally handsome face.

''You are quite infamous around the student council, Ayanokouji. And I have been meaning to ask... did you really figure out the S-system or was that just a load of bull?'' Nagumo asked. I could feel him watching me, looking for a surge of emotion -any emotion-to tell him if his question had hit a nerve.

It hadn't.

''Who knows?'' I shrugged my shoulders without a care in the world.

He smiled, but there was a hard glint to it, an edge.

We stopped by the entrance of yet another door, this one was made of dark wood. There was a couch placed on the side, with two students occupying it. One had a bald shaved head, and the other was a girl with distinctive pink hair. I could feel their eyes staring at my back. Of course, I paid them no heed.

With one last glance at Nagumo, I stepped into the room with Horikita.

"Au revoir," Nagumo with a cocky smile on his face said, punctuating the words with an exaggerated flick of his fingers. It was French for 'goodbye until we meet again.'

-

-

"My name is Manabu Horikita from class 3-A and the current student council president of this school." The man introduced himself.

''I'm glad you came, Ayanokouji. Take a seat.''

I wonder if stoicism ran in the family, cause like Horikita he seems to have a natural frown. The gears in my brain turned slowly, incorporating his attitude into account. A serious man like himself who pains to appear businesslike was very well guarded.

Obediently, I took a seat. Manabu stayed in his chair, but leaned forward. The desk between us was clean, but for a stack of papers and two pens, one of which was missing its cap.

He was naturally neat. For some reason, I found that comforting. He was ambitious, but not inflexible.

''Are you finished?'' he asked me. His voice wasn't curt. If anything, he sounded genuinely curious.

''Finished with what?'' I asked him.

''Analyzing me,'' he said. ''I've only been in this office for two hours. I couldn't even guess what it is that has caught your attention, but I figured something would. With talented individuals like yourself, something almost always does."

Talented. He said the word like he was expecting me to repeat it with a question mark in my tone. I didn't say anything. The less I gave him, the more he'd show me.

"You're good at reading people, at taking little details and figuring out the big picture: who they are, what they want, how they operate." He fixed his spectacles with his index finger.

People were people, but for better or worse, most days, they were just puzzles to me. Easy puzzles, hard puzzles, crosswords, mind-benders, sudoku. There was always an answer, and I couldn't stop myself from pushing until I found it.

"You invited me here because I'm good at guessing?" I asked, unable to keep the skepticism out of my voice.

''Before we move onto that subject. Why is she here if you don't mind me asking, '' He asked me instead of directly asking Horkita who was standing behind me. In fact, he didn't even glance at her. Not once. I could feel Horikita shifting, her thumb clenching her index finger. Must be a nervous involuntary reaction.

''She's my assistant...of sorts.''

Manabu raised an eyebrow in response.

"Despite her crippling superiority complex, she is an intelligent person, and based on my limited observations, she is also rather fit, definitely above average in athletics. She is a very rational person with critical thinking skills, but...''

''But..'' The president repeated.

''She simply does not consider the possibility that anyone could be better than her. Furthermore, her disregard for those beneath her makes her unable to act as a proper vessel of command, in the sense of a leader, because no one would ever follow someone with an attitude like hers. She's narrow-minded to a fault, and rarely ever sees the big picture.''

I don't know what expressive Horikita is making behind me, but I could definitely feel her stare. Possibly a glare. I mean, I am insulting her image right in front of her brother so it's understandable.

''However, based on what I have seen in class, she is one of the most perceptive students, and if she can overcome her superiority complex, she would make an excellent leader.''

The lamp light was reflecting off of elder Horikita's glasses, making me unable to read his expression.

''You could say I'm grooming her to be a proper leader, keeping her at arm's length under my wing. She has potential and I am willing to invest my time in her.''

He drummed his fingers over the desktop. "I see.'' He sighed. ''I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you."

Horikita visibly reacted to her brother's words. I wondered if when he said 'not to get my hopes up' he was talking at least in part to himself.

He took my continued silence to continue. "I took the time to read your file. You perfectly aced the entrance exam, quite impressive. Although unlike the rest of the students, your background information is a riddle. Your home address is not real and there is no family information. Why the higher-ups decided to admit you to this school is a total mystery to me.''

"How do you know any of this?" I asked the man in front of me.

He leaned forward. "I know because I make it my business to know."

"What do you want with me?"

He eased back in his chair. "What do you think I want with you, Ayanokouji?"

''To be a member of the student council?'' I asked by tilting my head.

He nodded before sharpening his gaze at me. ''How would you like to be vice-president of the student council?''

This was it. The stars were aligning together.

All I need to do is respond. And the answer is pretty simple.

[Horikita POV]

[Location- Student Park]

''NO? YOU SAID NO!!'' I barked at his back.

Dusk darkened the sky outside. In the center of the Park stood a large tree I was leaning against, and facing me was Ayanokouji sitting on a two-sided bench. He sat there, red blazer hanging on one of his arms, tie loosened, crisp white shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, and chin resting on his steepled fingers. His eyes were boring into mine, but he looked bored.

''He handed you the position on a silver platter and you said no?'' I kept hounding him.

''Oh please, I don't want to hear it from the girl who came all the way to see her dear brother, but couldn't even utter a single word out?''

I immediately closed my mouth. I hated that he was right. Even though I finally had the chance to see him again, the words got stuck in my throat. Have I finally proven myself by coming here, brother?

Of course, I didn't. I have been deemed fit for a class of defectives.

No wonder he didn't even look at me, I really am pathetic. I looked down at my feet and gritted my teeth at my own shortcomings.

''You know Suzune,'' Ayanokouji's voice regarded me with newfound fascination. He got up from the bench and walked toward me. ''I have never seen you so emotionally vulnerable before. You look so different, a delicious kind of different. It almost kinda makes me wanna do this-''

His eyes turned on me and they were darker than I had ever seen them. In one fluid motion, he pinned me against the tree behind me with his body.

His face was only a couple of inches from mine. ''Wanna talk about what happened in there? Especially how weird you acted in the presence of your brother?''

"Is this your idea of a joke? What could you possibly want to talk about with me? Unless you just want to brag about your genius like always?" It surprised me that I even bothered to respond.

''Mmm..'' He plucked a loose strand of hair and pushed it behind my ear. ''The usual Horikita would've just shoved me away or whipped out her compass by now, but you are just standing there, silently glaring at me. Your brother seems to be a sore point in your life.''

I pulled back as much as I could, gaping at him.

''You know what I think Horikita? I think you are mad at me. I think you are mad cause your dear older brother likes me more than you. He wanted to make me vice-president with no strings attached for God's sake. And he's only just met me five minutes ago, while he grew up with you.''

His eyes were boring into mine, but I said nothing. The knuckles in my clenched fist were already turning white.

''Aww...'' He kept taunting me. ''Does that piss you off? Knowing that I did something you couldn't do your entire life.''

My eyes sharpened, and I was doing everything I could to avoid hitting him.

''Not to mention how effortless it was for me.''

And just like that, I gave up trying to control my impulses. My left hand shot up to slap him, and it was a quick slap at that. However, he immediately grabbed my wrist just as it was about to reach his face and applied light pressure. Once he saw my face twitch slightly from pain, he slammed my wrist on top of my head.

My face contorted in irritation and his grip was so iron tight on me that I couldn't move. How embarrassing, losing to the likes of him. With nothing left to do I showed him the harshest glare I could muster.

''There she is,'' He remarked darkly and finally lets go of my wrist. ''There is the Horikita I know and love. I much prefer you when you are feisty and headstrong.''

I kept my glare fixed on him, while he slowly backs away, but still close enough to be at arm's length. He slid both hands into his pockets and struck a casual pose.

''You know how in movies, Villains always have this desire to rule the world. It makes you wonder, why aren't crazy people content to take over, like, one town? It always has to be the whole world. They can't just control maybe twenty people. They have to control everyone-''

"Get to the point," I said with just a hint of bite.

''Ruling the world is charming and everything but no one thinks of the complications that come with it. Like if I spent my time conquering the world I just wanna have fun for the rest of my life, what I don't want is to govern and take care of the seven billion people that come with the package.''

I tilted my head in confusion. Sometimes none of his words ever makes sense.

''Well I will be the one ultimately making all the important decisions, but I still need someone to micro-manage my Kingdom in my stead. I like having my name plastered on everything, as if the whole world belongs to me. What I don't like is the responsibility that comes with it.''

''What?'' My voice was dry.

''It would've been better if it was Kushida, she's much easier to have a leash on. But I suppose you will have to do. Kushida has no innate leadership skills, she's more of a support-type character. A pillar that keeps things balanced.''

''I'm still not following.'' I straightened up. He sighed before grabbing both my shoulders firmly.

''Horikita you have a Natural aptitude for leading people, whether you see it or not. And the wrong influences could all interfere with this incredible raw potential you have now." He tightened his grip on my shoulders so I stay in place.

"I want to personally see to it that you have the right influences, so that your gift is molded into something extraordinary, something that you can use to do an incredible amount of good in this world."

Part of me wanted to laugh at him, to walk out of this place, to forget that any of this had ever happened, but the other part just kept thinking that for nine years I spent pushing myself to earn my brother's respect. I'd been living in limbo, like I was waiting for something without knowing what that something was.

''And not to mention you can finally live up to your brother's expectations,'' he whispered softly.

I'm reminded yet again, of how persuasive he can be, when he wants to be. Due to him always being so painfully carefree, I nearly forgot this is the same person who rallied an entire class to his side effortlessly.

"You can take as much time as you need to think about it, Horikita, but what I'm offering you is a once-in-a-lifetime chance."

He deliberately used a time limit, to put urgency on my decision.

However,

''Your words won't work on me. I'm not your average Class D lackey. I know you are only telling me this to bring me to your side. You want to use me like a tool.'' I brushed off his attempts.

But he didn't seem bothered, only amused.

''Well, I won't deny your claims. But Suzune, everything in this world has a price, nothing is free. If being used by me is your only chance of winning, then don't you think it's a minor compensation.'' He raised his hand for a handshake, to finalize his deal.

I stared at his outstretched hand.

''For the sake of victory.'' He sweetly whispered.

I can't believe I was almost swayed away in the tides of his kind words. Of course, he'd had to ruin it by opening his mouth.

If only he would keep his mouth shut, he'd be perfect. A piece of duct tape would do the trick. I had some on my desk that I'd occasionally pull out and fondle, hoping someday I could put it to good use.

''I hope you rot in hell,'' I muttered while shaking his hand.

''Don't worry, I'm bringing you along with me.''

[TO BE CONTINUED]

[A/N Incase anyone is curious, he said no cause Manabu wouldn't have let Suzune join the student council with him. And Ayano wants someone like Horikita to join with him, so he can make her work while he himself chills around.
Kiyo just wants to join for the status, not the responsibility that comes with it]

[A/N Also this Ayanokoji likes telling stories about himself to Horikita, like in chapter 1, where he told her about him being sadistic as a child. He's only going to do this with Horikita, mainly cause it annoys her]
