The first sign that there might be a problem came when SG 1 was assembled at the guard station up top waiting for the Protectors to arrive. Once all ten of them were out of the vehicles, SG 1 noticed that all but the red haired girl was staring at Teal'C. That included the little girl. She looked confused and then said, "Mommy, slice and dice his inchworm."
There was a stunned silence and then the tall dark haired, young man said. "You're the one who insisted we take her with the last we time we had a meet with Willy the Snitch."
"The idiot wouldn't shut up about wanting me to pose for those sick pictures of his. He should know by now what my response will be."
"And yet he keeps asking. Tiny Princess, he's not a bad guy, he's like Clem, except not funny looking. Okay?"
"Bad tummy, daddy."
"Yah, there's something in his tummy that isn't nice, but the President said he's nice. So no slicing and dicing."
"Okay, daddy."
"You can tell about junior?" Colonel O'Neill asked, astonished.
"Yes sir, we weren't sure we'd be able to tell, but apparently we can. She's just concerned, that's all. We've never encountered a Jaffa or Gou'ld before."
"I understand, I am not offended." Said Teal'C.
The next thing that suggested there might be an issue was when Xander overheard two airmen making a comment about Cordelia. Actually, all the Pack and Faith heard it. Xander turned around and looked at the airmen and said. "Gentlemen, that is my wife you just made a crude comment about. I feel I should inform you that she has a high kick that can break a man's jaw, a right hook that can dislodge teeth and a tendency to kick between the uprights when she's really pissed. Piss her off enough and she may remove important body parts. Anything she leaves behind and I'll be doing damage to it. Apologize to her, please."
The glare Colonel O'Neill leveled at the airmen could have melted glass. They gulped and apologized. "You're on report, airmen. Dismissed."
Then the guards found their weapons. That didn't go over too well, either.
"That is one big ass sword." Colonel O'Neill said, staring at the nearly four foot long weapon, blade and handle combined.
"Yah, well, most of what we encounter just gets pissed off if you shoot it, unless you've got a pretty big caliber bullet. Bigger than Dirty Harry, I mean. But we have yet to deal with anything that removing its head doesn't stop it from trying to eat us." Xander told him.
"Damn and I thought Jaffa could be tough." Colonel O'Neill said. "Do you all use swords?"
"Well we all know how, but we each have our own bladed weapons that we're comfortable with. We won't carry them on base, but we do require that they be kept secure and accessible for us." Xander told him.
"We'll take them to the armory. After your medical and debrief you can check that they've been secured to your satisfaction."
"That's fine. I don't know if it's already been passed on to you Colonel, but the medical is not to include blood or tissue samples. Or any procedure done at all, without our medic, Jesse McNally's approval." Xander indicated Jesse. "Don't let his age make you doubt him or us. Jesse's been training hands on in traditional Chumash medicine, as well as earning a degree and several certifications, since he was 16. Not to mention, he's specifically trained in our medical needs. He's going to need to meet and discuss things with your doctor, sir."
"That should be fine. If you'll just come with us, we can get started."
Xander's nose flared slightly as he scented the military people and then nodded at his own. No lies. Good.
Everyone followed SG1 into the facility. It might not have gotten off to the best start, but the visit did seem to be improving.
Before the medical could begin, Jesse and Dr. Fraser had a conversation. Janet was surprised at how knowledgeable the young man was, but upon learning he'd been training for as long as she had, just having gotten started sooner, she relaxed.
Jesse told her about the Protectors higher metabolism and their need for a regular high calorie, high protein foods. Not that surprising really. Teal'C had such a metabolism. She promised to let the cafeteria know.
Then he dropped a small bombshell. The little girl was also a Protector. "It was completely unanticipated. No one has ever, as far as we know, been born a Protector. That she inherited her parents abilities has been a big shock and we've all worked to help her control her strength and abilities. It's why we didn't leave her with family. Her strength can make it difficult for a normal strength person to deal with her. But she's only a year and half old, so emotional mood swings, teething, and other things make it all difficult. Fortunately, she's generally a good natured baby. And I don't just say that because I'm her godfather. But we wanted you to be aware, in case she does something unusual."
"I understand, thank you for telling me. What can you tell me about their abilities?"
"Heightened strength, superior senses, including the ability to scent emotional responses. Heightened healing factor. A few other minor things but those are the big ones."
"Also, Tor and Heidi may have some issues themselves, especially being in an underground facility. Two years ago, a rogue project was started in Sunnydale. They built a base under a fraternity house on one of the college campuses. Their intent was to study and attempt control of the creatures that come though the rift, with the hope of using them as military assets. Apparently, they intended to try to implant control chips in their brains. They observed us dealing with an incursion and decided to grab two of our people. Tor and Heidi. They were held for a week, before the President could muster a response. Xander's uncle is a retired Marine who served in the Command responsible for dealing with the incursions. He contacted his old Colonel, who was by then, a General with a direct line to the President, who ordered the base shut done and all personnel arrested and tried. Tor and Heidi weren't in great shape when we found them. They hadn't eaten in a week because they scented that the food was drugged. They couldn't stand up when we found them and had lost weight. The head of the Operation, a Dr. Maggie Walsh, had also used a shock collar on Heidi while interrogating Tor. You can understand that all that left some emotional scars. This base has some similarities. We will let you know if we notice any issues".
"I'd appreciate that. So shall we get started?"
