The way Kristine answered Hailey's question grabbed her heart and destroyed it.
It was then that Hailey realized one thing, the fact that Kristine wouldn't be okay with all three of them together. With how she wanted nobody else to be with Scott, Hailey didn't know why she hoped that they could be a thing. She didn't know why she got her hopes up when it would all crash down like it did now. There was no way Kristine felt the same way Hailey did either.
Who would be in love with two people at the same time with it being reciprocated on both ends?
This only smacked her in the face with that realization. Every bit of her anxiety and fears were justified and it felt like a stab to her heart. Even if she wanted to, she couldn't say how she felt to Kristine, whether it was now or ever. If going for Scott would make Kristine resent her, then Hailey wanting to date her too would just make her feel disgusted. She wanted to cry, but now wouldn't be the time. Hailey couldn't have Scott ask her why she was crying, it would make her efforts wasted.
She could worry about herself later.
At least now she knew for certain that Kristine didn't feel that way, that they couldn't be in a relationship with each other like she wanted. She quietly gulped to push down her emotions. Her lips still quivered with a threat to cry. Hailey felt her cheeks burn with heat and she was sure that they became red. She felt crushed from words alone.
"...I promise."
A tear ran down her face.
A/N: I didn't catch the episode while it aired, I only watched it a day or two ago, BUT OH MAN. If that phone conversation wasn't ripe for pre-poly angst, as short as this is, then I dunno what would be. That's just stabbing some hearts right there.
