Sailor Moon was originally created by Naoko Takeuchi, while Golden Hawk was created by me, although his secret identity was created by Jerry and Sharon Logue. This series takes place in a real place, Orange County, California, during the 1980s. While I strive to make this series as accurate as possible, I have made some changes for artistic purposes.
Meet Serena Campbell, a typical all-American girl. Blonde hair, blue eyes, a little on the short side. She's very pretty, even though she sometimes thinks her nose is a little small for her face, and she sometimes wishes she was a couple inches taller. She has family and friends, people who love her, and people she loves. She sort of somewhat had a boyfriend, well, he's a boy, and he's her friend. And now, he's her boyfriend for real. And now, her team of superheroes has grown by one as Sailor Mercury is now a member of the team.
CHAPTER 4: ENTER ASTANAYAX
CLEARY'S RESTAURANT LA HABRA, CALIFORNIA
JULY 6, 1986
10:00 AM
Serena Campbell pulled Peggy Sue(her car, a pink 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible) into the parking lot next to Cleary's, and pulled into a space. "I hated having to lie to Amy's mom yesterday."
"How did we lie to Amy's mom?" Jerry Logue asked.
"When we let her think Amy's our friend from school," Serena said.
""That wasn't a lie," Jerry said. "Amy's our friend, and she does go to the same school we do."
"That's not what I meant," Serena said.
"Telling her that we're superheroes and Amy's part of our team kind of defeats the purpose of a secret identity," Jerry said.
"You're really getting into this whole superhero thing, aren't you?" Serena asked.
"And why not?" Jerry replied. "I'm living out a fantasy of many pre-adolescent boys."
"But you're not a pre-adolescent boy," Serena said, as they got out of the car. "May I remind you that in less than a year and a half, you'll be an adult. But than again, part of the reason I love you is your boyish charm."
"So you don't mind the fact I'm enjoying this?" Jerry said. "But don't worry, I know being a hero is a lot more than having powers, a costume, a cool name, and kicking bad guy booty."
"What else is there?" Serena asked.
"Trying to make the world a better place," Jerry said. "And having a cute girlfriend in my secret identity."
"I don't think I'm all that cute," Serena said. "I mean, sometimes, I think my nose is a bit too small for my face and I was a few inches taller."
"Bullshit," Jerry said. "Your nose is just the perfect size for your face. And besides, I'm in love with all of you, not just your nose. And as for being a few inches taller, you're the perfect size for me."
"And what size do you want me to be?" Serena asked.
"Serena sized," Jerry said. "To quote Billy Joel, I love you just the way you are."
"And I love you just the way you are," Serena said, and kissed Jerry.
"There go the lovebirds," Debbie, Jerry's sister, said, as she and Sharon, Jerry's mom, arrived. They went in, and sat in the waiting area. A minute after they got there, Amy Anderson came in with her mother, Saeko, who sat down next to Sharon.
"Sharon Husted?" Saeko asked, recognizing Jerry's mom.
'Yeah," Sharon said. "But how did you know?"
"You don't remember me?" Saeko asked. "Buchser High, class of 1960."
"Now I remember you," Sharon said. "I remember your first name is Saeko, but I forget your last name."
"You would have known me as Saeko Maeda," Saeko said. "But ever since I got married, I'm Saeko Anderson."
"Whoa," Jerry said. "Amy, your mom and my mom went to high school together?"
"I guess so," Amy said.
"Anyways," Saeko said, "this is my daughter, Amy."
"And these are my children," Sharon said. "My daughter Debbie, and my son Jerry."
"I met your son yesterday," Saeko said. "And would you believe he goes to the same school as my daughter? Anyways, would you like to join Amy and I for breakfast? It's my treat."
"Sure," Sharon said.
FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA
JULY 11, 1986
7:45 AM
Jerry Logue knocked on the front door, 3 times with his knuckles, and the last one with the side of his fist. "Hope you haven't had breakfast yet," Sammy Campbell said when he answered the door. "Mom's about to make chocolate chip pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon, and she wanted me to tell you she isn't taking no for an answer."
"Sometimes I think your mother is trying to fatten me up for the kill," Jerry said. "But I don't mind, I love her pancakes. I just wish I knew her secret."
"I add an extra secret ingredient you won't find at IHOP," Cathy Campbell said. "Love. Well, that, and I also mix in some chocolate cake batter and Ovaltine to the mix."
"Some days I think I'm the luckiest guy in town," Jerry said.
"And why's that?" Serena Campbell asked, as she came downstairs from her bedroom.
"Because I have 3 mothers," Jerry said.
"How do you figure you have 3 mothers?" Serena asked.
"Well," Jerry said, "first, you have my mom. Second, there's Bonnie. And third, there's your mom. It seems like ever since the day we met, she treats me like her son."
"Well, I don't mind if you call me mom," Cathy said.
"I just might," Jerry said.
"Breakfast is almost ready," Cathy said.
"Oh good," Jerry said, grabbing himself a glass from the cupboard, and pouring himself a glass of milk, to which he added Ovaltine, and made himself a glass of chocolate milk. As he, Serena, and Sammy sat down, Cathy began putting breakfast on the table. As everyone sat down, they all grabbed what they wanted. Jerry got himself a couple pancakes, a few slices of bacon, and some eggs. Just as he was about to butter his pancakes, Cathy put another pancake on his plate, along with some extra chocolate chips, and sprinkling them with powdered sugar. She also gave him more bacon and eggs.
"Eat up, I made plenty," Cathy said.
"See what I mean? Jerry said. "Fattening me up for the kill."
"It's just that I don't think Bonnie feeds you enough," Cathy said. "So do you have any plans for today?"
"Not until later this afternoon," Jerry said. "I'm picking my cousins up from the train station ane taking them to their grandparents."
"Wait until Jimmy and Pookie see Peggy Lee," Serena said.
"She doesn't go by Pookie anymore," Jerry said. "She wants us to call her by her real name."
"What is her real name?" Serena asked.
"Jennie," Jerry said.
"So what do you want to do after breakfast?" Serena asked.
"We need to go up and pick up our paychecks," Jerry said.
"What if Susan needs the two of you to come in today?" Cathy asked.
"She won't," Jerry said. "We already worked our maximum allowed hours for the week."
After breakfast, Serena and Jerry went to Cavern Records, this time in Jerry's car. "You can drive Peggy Sue when we go pick up James and Jennie," Jerry said. "I want to take the Flying Dutchman out for a spin for once."
"I had a strange dream last night," Serena said, as they drove.
"What was it about?" Jerry asked.
"There were these two women," Serena said. "I assume they were nude, since I could only see them from the shoulders up, and they both had bare shoulders. Anyways, one of the women was black, she had very short, close cropped hair, and the other was white, she had shoulder length blonde hair. Now here's the strange part. They were joined back to back, as if they were Siamese twins. But that can't be possible. I remember in biology, they said that Siamese twins are always identical."
"You wanna hear something really strange?" Jerry asked.
"What?" Serena replied.
"i had the exact same dream," Jerry said. "Siamese twins, joined back to back, one white and one black."
"That's really strange," Serena said. "Did either of the women say anything to you in the dream?"
"I didn't really catch much," Jerry said. "Something about emissaries from Mau. Wherever Mau is."
"I heard the same thing," Serena said. "
"We should consult Luna after we pick up our paychecks," Jerry said.
"Aren't we going to go cash them?" Serena asked.
"We're going to my mom's bank to cash them," Jerry said. "We're going to grab our checks, you're going to pick up Peggy Sue. Don't forget, when we pick up James and Jennie, I'll be leaving the Flying Dutchman at my mom's."
"Oh yeah," Serena said.
"And I think we should get Amy involved in this, as well," Jerry said. "We'll pick her up after we get our checks."
Jerry and Serena went to Cavern Records, where they picked up their paychecks. Afterwards, they went to Amy's house, to pick her up. "I had the weirdest dream last night,' Amy said.
"Let me guess," Jerry said. "A pair of Siamese twins, joined back to back, except one is black and the other is white, they mentioned something about an emissary from Mau."
"How did you know?" Amy asked. "Is telepathy one of your powers?"
"Jerry and I had the exact same dream," Serena said.
"We need to talk to Luna about this."Jerry said
"Who's Luna?" Amy asked.
"My cat," Serena said. "You know, the one who gave you and I our powers."
"That cat," Amy said.
They get back to Serena's house, and go up to her bedroom. "We'll just be a few minutes," Serena said.
"Okay," Cathy said.
"You do realize there's a boy in your room," Amy said.
"It's okay," Serena said. "My mom trusts Jerry."
"So what's so important you need to talk to me about?" Luna asked.
"This dream the three of us had last night," Jerry said. "A pair of Siamese twins joined back to back. The weird thing was, one was black the other white. They mentioned something about emissaries from Mau."
"We were hoping you might be able to shed some light on things," Serena said.
"I can tell you about Mau," Luna said. "But that is a story for another time."
"What about the Siamese twins?" Jerry asked.
"Astanayax," Luna said. "Their name is Astanayax."
"They share a name?" Amy asked.
"They are real," Jerry said.
"Strange they would make their initial contact through dreams," Luna said.
"You're aware of them?" Jerry asked.
"Of course," Luna said. "They're allies of myself and the other emissary. On their home world, all twins are born joined to one another, whether they're identical or not."
"But how can that be possible?" Serena asked. "I thought Siamese twins are always identical twins. In biology, we learned Siamese twins are formed when a zygote attempts to separate into twins, but the separation is imcomplete."
"There are many sentient races throughout the universe that appear indistinguishable from Earth humans, on many planets," Luna said. "Each race has minor physiological differences. On the planet Astanayax hails from, one of those differences is the fact that twins are always born physically joined to one another, whether identical or fraternal."
"Makes sense to me," Jerry said.
"How do you figure that?" Serena asked.
"I'm sure you're familiar with Superman," Jerry said. "Originally, he was Kal-El, he was sent to Earth when his home planet Krypton exploded. On Krypton, where the sun was red, everyone was just like normal humans, but when exposed to the rays of Earth's yellow sun, he has all these powers. Anyways, when he's Clark Kent, nobody ever suspects he's not exactly from Metropolis, if you know what I mean."
"Nobody ever suspects Clark Kent's an extraterrestrial, that's what you're saying," Amy said.
"Yes," Jerry said. "So it would make sense that on some other planets, it would be possible for non identical twins to be Siamese twins."
"But where does this Astanayax fit into all this?" Serena asked
"I'll have to contact them," Luna said. "Ask why they chose to make their initial contact through dreams. And there's one other matter I need to contact them about."
"And what would that be?" Jerry asked.
"Why Astanayax would contact you at all," Luna said. "You're not one of the Chosen."
"The Chosen?" Amy asked.
"Yes," Luna said. "Those charged with defending Earth against the ancient evil. There are others, but you two are the only ones I've found yet. Jerry's appearance as Golden Hawk was serendipity. Jerry, you may not be one of the Chosen, but I sense you will become an extremely valuable ally. And I have one more thing."
"What's that?" Serena asked.
"These," Luna said, as she jumped up and did a backflip in midair. When she did, two compacts appeared on the bed, one with a crescent moon, the other with the symbol for Mercury. "Serena,Amy, if you don't mind."
"What are these?" Serena asked, as she took the compact with the crescent moon.
"Your communicators," Luna said. "They'll allow you to easily communicate with myself or each other."
"What about me?" Jerry asked.
"I'm sure you don't want a compact," Luna said.
"The guys would look at me funny," Jerry said. "Besides, it would raise too much suspicion for me to carry a compact."
"Let me see your wristwatch," Luna said.
"Just be careful," Jerry said. "My granddad and meemaw gave that to me on my last birthday."
"I'm assuming you're referring to Tommy and Mamie, and not Ernie and Goldie," Luna said. "Don't worry, your watch won't be damaged in any way." She placed a paw on the watch, and it glowed for a second, after which she removed her paw. "Go ahead and put your watch back on," Luna said. "It now doubles as your communicator. But I do have one question."
"What is it?" Jerry replied.
"If you say you wouldn't be caught dead with a compact," Luna said. "what's that thing you used to transform last weekend?"
"You mean my buckler?" Jerry asked. "That's a little different than a buckler. And I don't exactly use it to transform."
"What do you use it for?" Luna asked.
"That's just where I keep my costume," Jerry said. "I don't know if either of you girls reads comic books, but it's like how the Flash keeps his costume in a ring. Just one last thing, I think it would be cool if we had codenames. I was thinking since my superhero name is Golden Hawk, I'll use Big Bird."
"I'll be Bad Luck Charm," Luna said. "Since people usually consider black cats bad luck."
""I'll be Graceland," Serena said. "Since I'm an Elvis girl."
"And since it was my favorite book when I was younger," Amy said, "I'll be Madeline."
"If we're all done here," Amy said, "I need to get home in the next half hour. Since my mom doesn't have any appointments this afternoon, she;s taking a half day off, she and I are going to go have lunch together."
"Where does your mom work?" Jerry asked.
"She has an office in the medical building across the street from El Dorado," Amy said.
"Tell you what," Jerry said. "Why don't I just drop you off at her office. I have to pick my stepbrother up there anyways."
"Do you think your mom would mind if I called my mom and let her know?" Amy asked.
"She wouldn't mind at all," Serena said. "Go ahead and use my phone."
"Thanks," Amy said. She called her mom's office, and spoke to the receptionist. "This is Dr. Maeda's daughter, could you please let her know a friend offered to drop me off over there instead of her going home."
""I'll be back in a bit," Jerry said. "I just need to drop Amy off, pick Steve up, and bring him home."
Jerry drove Amy to her mom's office. "Please let Dr. Maeda know her daughter's here," Amy told the receptionist.
"Okay," the receptionist said. "Go ahead and have a seat."
A few minutes later, after Jerry picked his stepbrother up and dropped him off at home, he came out with a couple bags. One, a large overnight bag, which contained a change of clothes, and a small gym bag, which contained his workout clothes, a pair of trainers, his swimming trunks, two towels, a cheap pair of rubber thong sandals, and a small toiletry bag. He then called Serena. "Meet me at my mom's," Jerry said. "And bring your gym clothes, I want to hit the gym after lunch."
"Cool," Serena said.
They took off for La Habra in separate cars, Jerry driving the Flying Dutchman(a cherry red 1966 Ford Mustang convertible) and Serena driving Peggy Sue(a pink 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible. They met up at Jerry's house, where Jerry drove up the alley behind Alpine Street, parking in his mom's garage. He brought both bags in the house, and stashed the overnight bag in his bedroom, and put the gym bag in Peggy Sue's trunk. They went to Mitsubishi Bank on Beach and Whittier, where they cashed their checks(which were written on a Mitsubishi Bank account). After they cashed their checks, they went to TS Burgers for lunch. Jerry got a bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and a large Cherry Coke, while Serena got a cheeseburger, fries, and a large Dr Pepper. After lunch, they went to Imperial Spa, where Jerry showed his membership card, and signed Serena in as a guest. After Jerry changed into his gym clothes, he went out to the gym floor, where he ran into Billy, who worked at Helping Hearts, Helping Hands Thrift Store at Fashion Square. "Hey Billy," Jerry said. "What brings you here?"
"I'm training,:" Billy said.
"Training?" Jerry asked.
"Training for the Special Olympics," Billy said. "Next month, they're having a meet next month at Titan Stadium."
"What events are you doing?" Jerry asked.
"Fifty meter dash, long jump, high jump, and discus throw," Billy said.
"Just let me know when it is," Jerry said. "I'd love to be there to cheer you on, and I think I can talk a couple friends into joining me."
"That would be great," Billy said. "Maybe I'll see you at the Corn Festival too."
"Of course you will," Jerry said. "I'll be in the Helping Hearts dunking booth on that Saturday."
"That's cool," Billy said. "I'll be there working for a bit myself. And there's no way I'm gonna miss out on eating some of that good sweet corn there."
"Tell me about it," Jerry said. "Just make sure there's plenty of butter and salt on it."
"You know it," Billy said. "And don't forget the Fire Department's 5 alarm chili."
"Bring it on," Jerry said.
Later, after Jerry finished his workout, he met up with Serena at the pool, where they got in a little swim, before showering and changing. "How much time do we have before we have to be at the train station?" Serena asked.
"About half an hour," Jerry said. "Why not go there now."
"I was thinking the same thing," Serena said.
The two of them drove to the Fullerton Amtrak station, where they only had to wait a few minutes for the train they were waiting for to arrive. After it arrived, they only had to wait a few minutes for Jerry's cousins to disembark. "Hey guys," Jimmy said ashe and his sister saw Jerry and Serena.
"Hey Jimmy," Jerry said. "Hey Jennie. Your mom wanted me to remind you to call her when you arrived."
"Just point me to a payphone," Jimmy said. "You got change for the phone?"
"Your mom told me to remind you to call collect if you have to," Jerry said.
After quickly calling his mom(collect), Jimmy and Jennie got their luggage, and took it to Serena's car. "I thought you got a Mustang for your birthday," Jennie said.
"I did," Jerry said. "This is Serena's car."
"I always wanted a pink Cadillac," Serena said.
"Anyways, we're going to drop you off at your grandparents's house," Jerry said.
"You know how to get there?" Jimmy asked.
"I've been there a couple times," Jerry said. "It's over by Knott's Berry Farm."
"I've never been there before," Serena said.
"I'll let you know how to get there," Jimmy said.
After dropping James and Jennie off, Serena and Jerry went back to Jerry's mom's house, where he left his car. As he went to the garage to get his car, his communicator went off. "This isBig Bird," he said.
"Big Bird, this is Madeline," Amy said. "Trouble at Craig Park."
"Graceland and I will be right there," Jerry said. "Trouble at Craig Park."
"Let's get into character," Serena said. "Pretty Soldier of the Moon, Make-Up!"
Jerry got his buckler out. "Golden Hawk!"
They met up with Sailor Mercury at Craig Park, where they found themselves in combat with what appeared to be a 7 foot tall human/iguana hybrid, which had an extremely muscular body. "What is that thing?" Sailor Moon asked.
"Not sure," Golden Hawk said, "but I strongly suspect whatever it is, with that body, it either lives in the gym or takes steroids. Whatever it is, it's going down."
"Any suggestions?" Sailor Mercury asked.
"Attack and don't let up," Golden Hawk said.
"Is that how you suggest we fight every enemy?" Sailor Moon asked.
"What can I say," Golden Hawk said. "I'm just a Hessian who's full of aggression."
"And who do you think you are, anyways?" the creature asked.
"I am the Pretty Sailor Suited Soldier of Love and Wisdom," Sailor Mercury said. "I am Sailor Mercury, and in the name of Mercury, Douse yourself with water and repent!"
"I am the Pretty Sailor Suited Soldier of Love and Justice," Sailor Moon said. "I am Sailor Moon, and in the name of the Moon, I'll punish you!"
"And I'm the Wicked Cool Suburban Vigilante of 1986," Golden Hawk said. "You can call me Golden Hawk, and in the name of all that is awesome, I'll kick your ass!"
"Tough talk," the creature said. "But I bet none of you have the balls to back it up."
"Golden Hawk may be the only one of us who actually has balls," Sailor Moon said, "but I can assure you all of us can back it up."
"Mercury Hailstorm Barrage!" Sailor Mercury said, launching a barrage of hailstones at the creature.
"Eat hot death!" Golden Hawk said, transforming his staff into a pair of blasters, and firing at the creature.
"Moon Sonic Blast!" Sailor Moon said, shooting sonic waves from her hands at the creature.
Golden Hawk rushed the creature , as he did, he transformed his blasters into a pair of diamond hard metal tonfas, Using one as a brace, he launched himself at the creature, delivering a devastating forearm shiver, the tonfa enhancing the blow. He then picked the creature up by the waist, and delivered a textbook gutwrench suplex. As the creature got up, Golden Hawk grabbed it by the arm, which he twisted before drawing the creature in for a shortarm clothesline, followed by a DDT. As the creature once again got up, Golden Hawk whipped it into a nearby tree, and delivered an enziguri kick to the back of its head, sending it down for the count. "Sailor Moon," Golden Hawk said, "As soon as it gets up, throw your tiara at it.:
"Right," Sailor Moon said. As the creature got up, she removed her tiara. "Moon Tiara, Boomerang!"
As the tiara hit the creature, it was destroyed. "I think we're done here," Golden Hawk said.
A few minutes later, they reconvened in Serena's room, along with Luna. "What was all that stuff you were doing to the creature?" Luna asked.
"Just a few things I learned watching WWF on TV, " Jerry said.
"WWF?" Luna asked.
"World Wresting Federation," Jerry said. "Professional wrestling."
"Seems to be effective," Luna said.
"Yes it does,": came a voice from seemingly out of nowhere.
"Who was that?" Serena asked.
"We believe the time is right for us to introduce ourselves," another voice said, as a hologram of two women appeared in the room. The women were shown from the shoulders up, and from their bare shoulders, one would get the impression the women were nude. One woman was white, with shoulder length blonde hair, the other black with closely cropped hair, and the most distinctive thing about the women was the fact they appeared to be joined back to back, as if they were Siamese twins.
"The women from my dream," Amy said.
"The women from our dream," Jerry said.
"We are Astanayax," the black woman said, as the hologram continuously rotated.
"And we see you have already met one of the emissaries from Mau," the white woman said.
"We have?" Serena asked.
"I am the emissary from Mau," Luna said. "Or, at least, one of them. There is another, he and I were separated when we first arrived on Earth."
"What exactly is Mau, anyways?" Jerry asked.
"Mau is my home planet," Luna said. "As humans are the dominant species on Earth, the dominant species on Mau is what you would refer to as the common house cat. "You never wondered why I am able to speak?"
"If I didn't know any better," Jerry said, "I would have put that down as having one too many brownies from the Alice B. Toklas bakery."
"Anyways," Luna said, "myself and the other emissary are charged with finding all the Chosen, and unlocking their powers."
'But why?" Amy asked. "I heard something about fighting an ancient evil."
"That question will be answered at another time," the black half of Astanayax said.
