A/N:
This is the first of my Twilight Series. I've created an OG character for each Twilight cast character. Briar and Lyric will have their own respective books and they will be released and updated simultaneously. Lyric's story is called "Always."
**BRIAR POV**
Briar Michaels sat in the passenger seat of the Kia Sorrento she shared with her sister. They were in the parking lot of Forks High School, procrastinating from going inside. Briar knew her twin, Lyric, was nervous. It was understandable since they'd moved away from Nashville, a city much larger than this one. Briar wasn't nervous though. She stared at the building with a sense of calm. Her school life in Tennessee had been miserable and she'd been depressed. Her parents had tried to help her, but after discussing with her sister, they calmly approached their parents and asked for a move, specifically to a small town. Their parents were independently wealthy, so they could drop everything and move. Paul Michaels had been a child actor and continued to star in films until Briar's problems surfaced. He'd willingly retired from Hollywood to make sure she got the care she needed and was there every step of the way. He was now a best-selling author and still received scripts every month. Luna Michaels had been a very successful runway and print model but retired when she became pregnant with twins. She now owns her own fashion company, focusing on teens and maternity.
Briar pulled her jean jacket tighter around herself in a nervous movement. She wasn't scared about the move or school. She was just afraid that history would repeat itself if everyone found out about her past. She was dressed much more casually than her sister was. She sported regular straight-legged jeans, a blue and white striped t-shirt under her jacket, and white high-top converse. She paired it with her rose gold starburst necklace with diamonds inlay in the middle. Her coppery red hair fell in waves down the middle of her back. Because of her condition, Briar didn't get much sun, leaving her skin ivory and luminescent. She felt Lyric take her hand and squeeze it. "Are you ready to do this?" she asked softly. Briar returned the squeeze and smiled at her. "At least it's the first day of school so we shouldn't stick out too badly."
The girls got out of the SUV and grabbed their backpacks from the back seat. Despite it being the first day of school, the twins still had to report to the office for their schedules. This is because everyone else received theirs in the mail. As they made their way to the office, the girls clasped hands and ignored the stares from all of the kids waiting around the parking lot, waiting for the first bell to ring. They passed a group of kids standing around a blue van. There were about seven of them and all of them looked at the two of them as they passed. Most of them were just curious, it was obvious that this was a tiny school, and everyone grew up together so a new student would stand out, unlike what Briar had originally hoped. The only exception to the stares was that of a pretty brunette that stood at the end of the group of friends with a book in her hand. Her gaze wasn't curious or welcoming, it was one of anger as she stared at the girls. Briar and Lyric ignored her because surely, she wasn't already forming opinions about two people she'd never spoken to. When they arrived at the office, an older lady was behind the desk and greeted them warmly. "Well, hello girls, what can I do for you?" Briar wasn't shy, she was just so used to being bullied that she rarely spoke in the presence of strangers unless directly spoken to. She was eternally grateful for her sister who always took charge of any situation and was there for her no matter what. Lyric stood up straight as she hesitantly smiled at the woman and answered.
"Good morning, I'm Lyric Michaels and this is my sister, Briar. We're starting as seniors today." Briar loved Lyric's confidence. The lady beamed at her, but when her gaze landed on Briar, it dimmed somewhat. She definitely knew about her, she thought to herself bitterly. One day, she would like to be viewed as herself and not her illness. They watched as the receptionist rifled through a drawer and produced two pieces of paper. She handed them both to Lyric before picking up a third paper and holding it out as well. "Here are your schedules," She explained. "Please have your teachers sign that so you can bring it back to me at the end of the day. This other paper is a map of the school. It's not very big so you should get the hang of it very quickly." Lyric thanked her and grabbed Briar's hand so they could head outside again. Lyric scanned both schedules, not giving Briar hers yet, and scowled as she finally handed it over.
"We're only in two classes together," she spat. "We get lunch and gym together and that's it." Briar felt her shoulders drop at this news but tried to make the most of it. As she looked at her schedule she nodded in understanding. "Don't worry about me, Ly, I'll be ok." Briar said to comfort her sister. "It looks like I'm in mostly AP classes anyway." Lyric pouted before looping their arms together and grinning. "Well, I can at least walk you to your first class."
As the two searched for room 6, a hyper Asian boy with nice eyes and jet-black hair walked over to them. "Hey there ladies!" He said enthusiastically. "I'm Eric, and I'm your welcome wagon. Can I help you find your classes?" Briar saw her room up ahead and disentangled herself from her sister. Her cheeks flushed as she looked at him. "That's okay, my class is right here, but thank you." Without waiting for a reply, Briar darted into her classroom. Her stomach dropped when she saw that the majority of the classroom was already full. Briar walked to the teacher hesitantly and held out her schedule to him. He accepted it with a smile and welcomed her warmly. "Welcome to Advanced English Literature, Ms. Michaels." He said as he gestured towards the room. "We don't have assigned seats here, so pick any open spot. The books are already on your desk, and you'll take them with you." After signing her form, he handed it back to her with another gentle smile and it clicked. Clearly, the entire staff knew about her. She accepted the form back with a small smile of her own. She felt extremely uncomfortable with his sympathetic gaze and the stares of every student in the room. In response, she said a small thank you to him and turned to the room in search of an open seat. Her face flamed at the scrutiny of her fellow students, even though most gazed curiously. The brunette from the parking lot glared daggers at her, but the perky girl closest to her gave her a warm smile while stealing glances at the blonde boy next to her. She was about to move towards the left in order to take the empty seat in the middle when a short, dainty girl with a cropped black pixie cut, and beautiful amber eyes raised her hand to her. "You can sit here next to us." She and a boy with thick bronze hair sat in the back right corner next to the window. Thankful to move away from the eyes that seemed to follow her everywhere, she slid into the seat next to her. The girl beamed brightly at her and slightly bounced in her seat as she turned towards her.
"I'm Alice Cullen, welcome to Forks!" She introduced herself excitedly. "This is my brother, Edward." Briar stole a quick glance at the boy who was staring straight ahead instead of staring at her. It was a welcome relief from all the stares. They both had ivory white, flawless skin. It was amazing how beautiful they both were, and she couldn't help but wonder if they'd let her photograph them. She saw Edward's lips quirk slightly as he turned his head slightly and nodded at her in greeting. Briar smiled softly at them both as she fished a pencil out of her bag and answered Alice. "It's nice to meet you both." She spoke quietly, hoping to keep curious eyes from peeking back. "I'm Briar Michaels." Upon hearing her name, Edward met her gaze fully and gave her a tiny smile. "It's nice to meet you too, Briar." He said softly in response. Briar felt her pulse kick up a notch at the way her name sounded coming from his velvety voice.
Mr. Berty's English class passed by quickly and without major issues. That is unless you call the brunette glancing back at the three of them, scowling darkly whenever her gaze landed on Briar. She wanted to ask Alice about it but decided against it. She didn't want to escalate anything into a confrontation, which was crazy because that girl didn't even know her. At the end of the class, she practically tripped trying to walk to them in the back. This was just as Alice asked what her next class was. She discovered that the girl's name was Bella Swan. As she was completely fixated on Edward, she answered Alice's question, trying to block out the way the girl stared at him. "I'm in advanced calculus next with Mr. Varner." Edward stopped his whispered argument with Bella and turned to face her. "That's my next class, Briar." He stated simply. "I can walk with you to show you where it is, if you like." Briar didn't miss the wide smile that spread across Alice's face at his invitation or the incredulous look Bella wore. Meeting his piercing gaze and blushing again, she nodded. "If you don't mind, I'd really appreciate it." He gave her another tiny smile and gestured for her to move first. Once they got to the door, Bella's voice sounded angrily from behind them.
"Are you serious right now, Edward?" she demanded. "I don't get a say in this at all?" She heard Edward sigh, and he whispered an apology to her before turning back to Bella. "No, you don't, Bella." He spoke furiously. "We covered all of this over the summer. Can you please stop making scenes all over the school?" She heard the girl scoff, but didn't listen to her reply. She felt incredibly awkward standing there while they argued in the doorway of Mr. Berty's classroom. She was so relieved when she saw her sister down the hallway, standing next to the boy from this morning. Making a beeline for them, she made a hasty exit to give Bella and Edward the privacy they didn't think they needed. Lyric saw her coming and smiled brightly at her. "Hey B! How was your English class?" Briar was so happy to be away from the scene that she breathed deeply. "It was okay, but the end was super awkward." She didn't elaborate on what she meant, but leaned toward Eric in hope since he'd offered it earlier. "Hello again, Eric. Sorry I practically ran away this morning. I was overwhelmed." She explained. "Would you mind pointing me in the direction of building C?" The boy's face lit up at her words as he nodded. They both said goodbye to her sister and walked in the opposite direction. "Sure thing, Briar!" He said with too much enthusiasm. "I'm actually heading there myself."
Calculus was on the other side of the building, but it wasn't a long walk since the school was pretty small. As they walked, Eric couldn't stop himself from asking questions. "So why was your last class awkward?" Briar laughed nervously and decided not to go into too much detail. "Oh, it was just these two kids," she answered quietly. "They got into an argument in front of everyone." Eric snickered as he led her to the classroom. "Let me guess," he said in amusement. "It was Bella yelling at Edward." Briar's eyes widened at his statement causing him to laugh once more. "Yeah, they dated last year, and he broke up with her. I mean, to be fair, she was extremely obsessive about him, and she still is. She accosted him in the parking lot this morning after you walked into the office." She was saved from responding because they made it to the building they needed, which was just a small trailer that served as a classroom. When they entered the building, it was half full and Edward Cullen was already there next to a tall blonde boy. Edward looked up when she entered. She watched as he whispered something to the boy who didn't change his facial expression, only nodded. Edward got up slowly and walked towards her. Eric's face fell slightly, and he said goodbye to her and found a seat. Once Edward was next to her, he smiled hesitantly at her. "Hi Briar," he began calmly. "I'm sorry about earlier, I hope that didn't make you too uncomfortable." Briar had to look up at him because he was incredibly tall, had to be over six feet. Briar was only 5'3" so she had to crane her neck slightly to look up at him. "It's okay, Edward." She said with a small smile. "I just wanted to give you privacy since it seemed like a private conversation." He nodded and pursed his lips slightly as he regarded her. "It should have been, but it's complicated where Bella is concerned." He started walking back towards the boy he'd been sitting by and turned back when he realized she wasn't following. "Would you like to sit next to me and my brother?" After a second of hesitation, she nodded and followed him to the seats.
Edward sat down next to his brother and Briar sat down next to him, putting Edward in the middle. She pulled out a notebook and pencil when a loud scoff came from ahead. She looked up to see Bella standing in front of her with another scowl. "Can you move?" She asked but it sounded more like a demand. "You're in my seat." Briar really didn't like confrontation, but she also wouldn't let someone treat her like garbage when she'd never spoken to the girl. Briar didn't look at Edward as she addressed the rude girl in front of her. "Seeing as there are no assigned seats, it's the first day of school, and Edward asked me to sit next to him, I'd say I'm in my seat." Edward leaned forward slightly, his face furious. "That is enough, Bella. I'm sick of you causing scenes everywhere you go. We have been over for months now. You have to move past it." Briar sat back in her seat and cringed slightly at his words. She always suffered from secondhand embarrassment and this situation was so unbearable. However, as soon as the feelings started to overwhelm her, a sense of calm settled over her and she breathed out a breath of relief. She watched as Bella glared at the other boy before huffing and sitting at the front. Next to her, Edward sighed heavily before speaking lowly. "I'm so sorry about that, Briar. I had hoped she wouldn't be in this class." She glanced at him as he spoke but couldn't respond because Mr. Varner walked in and called the class to order.
Math had always been easy for Briar, much to her sister's aggravation. Most of the material in the book she skimmed through, she'd already covered. Briar had gone to a public school, but she'd also been partially home-schooled because of her treatment. Because she was home a lot, she'd gotten ahead in her schoolwork, so this year was going to be extremely easy. This was something she appreciated. When the class ended, she packed her things up and walked over to Mr. Varner and handed him her form to sign. He barely looked at her as he signed the form and handed it back, for which she was grateful. She knew it was lunchtime, and she was ready to see her sister. When she walked to the door, Edward waited for her with his brother. He gave her a slight small as he led her to the hallway. "I'm sorry I didn't get to introduce you two before class started." He began somewhat formally. "Briar, this is my brother, Jasper." Jasper gazed at her, with a slightly confused look on his face, but he also wore a smile. "It's nice to meet you, Briar," He said with the same velvety voice as Edward. "I hope you're liking Forks so far." Briar smiled brightly for the first time since the parking lot. "I love it here." She exclaimed. "It's so different from Nashville and I really love the green and cloudiness." She blushed as she realized she was gushing, but both boys shared her smile as they walked. Edward kept a steady pace to match hers so he could stay beside her. "Do you have lunch next, Briar?" She nodded her answer as they rounded a corner and approached the large open area that served as the lunchroom.
Briar scanned the vast room, trying to find her sister. The cafeteria was larger than she had anticipated and she worried she wouldn't find her. She could survive without Lyric, but she was her best friend and wanted to ask her about her day. Edward spoke beside her as he regarded her. "I think I see your sister in the lunch line, if you're looking for her." She glanced to where he was pointing and sure enough, she saw her sister's chin length, deep red hair. Letting her shoulder relax, she thanked Edward and walked over to her sister. "You didn't bring your lunch today?" Lyric jumped slightly at her voice and turned to fake a glare at her. "B, you know I hate it when you sneak up on me like that!" Briar smiled innocently at her. She watched as her sister's face fell and leaned down to speak softly. "Mom forgot to make my lunch last night and handed me twenty dollars this morning." Briar frowned at her sister's statement. "You can share mine, Ly, you don't have to eat school food if you don't want to." She knew that her sister was going to refuse, and she was right as Lyric began shaking her head. "Absolutely not, B. You barely eat as it is, so you need your lunch. You can find us a table and I'll meet you there. I'll grab you a water while I'm in there, okay?" Briar nodded and glanced around for an empty table, but they all seemed taken. Her attention was grabbed by Alice, who was practically jumping up and down trying to get her attention. Briar couldn't stop the smile and blush that followed as she walked towards her.
Alice rushed towards her with a giant grin on her face as she led her back to the table she'd been sitting at next to the large windows. "I'm so glad we got lunch together, Briar!" Briar's blush deepened at her words. "Thank you, Alice," she said softly. "I always hate lunchroom politics and finding a seat. Do you mind if my sister joins us?" She would only sit where Lyric sat, but it was Alice's table and she wanted to be polite. Alice continued to bounce in her seat as she nodded. "Of course, she can, silly!" Lyric arrived at her table with a raised eyebrow, so Briar pushed the seat next to her out. Lyric sank into the seat gratefully and pushed a bottle of water towards her. When she saw that she had yet to pull her lunch out, she frowned. "B, I know you don't have much of an appetite, but please try to eat some of it." Rolling her eyes, Briar pulled her lunch box out of her backpack and opened it. It wasn't that she didn't like to eat, it was the fact that due to the medications she was on, she could only tolerate certain things. Her mom always packed her lunch because she didn't want her to rely on the school system. She opened her bento box and saw that her mother had packed her some grilled chicken, brown rice, broccoli, and hummus. She'd also packed her an ensure drink in case she couldn't eat the actual food. Her medication made her nauseous and lose her appetite and due to her sensitive stomach, she was only allowed the blandest foods. She picked up her fork and nibbled on the chicken and rice, occasionally sipping the water her sister had gotten for her.
After a few more minutes, Edward and Jasper arrived, both sporting identical smiles. They sat down next to Alice putting Edward across from Briar and Jasper across from Lyric. Not wanting to be rude, she swallowed her mouthful of food with difficulty before turning to her sister who was eating pizza. "Lyric, these are the Cullens." She began. "This is Alice, Edward, and Jasper." Lyric smiled at the three of them, but Alice spoke first. "Hi, Lyric, it's so nice to meet you! Jasper's last name is actually Hale. We were all adopted, and Jasper is our newest member, so he and his sister wanted to keep their last name." Briar flushed in embarrassment from assuming, but Alice just patted her on the back. She looked down at her food with a frown and realized she didn't want to eat anymore. Seeing her face, Lyric leaned over, grabbed her strawberry ensure, and opened it. "B, just drink this okay? Please finish it, you need the protein." Feeling the others' eyes on her, she kept her head down as she nodded and picked the drink up. Lyric grabbed her bento box and closed it for her and put it back in her bag. She took a tentative sip of the shake and found it easy to swallow. She drank the whole thing and sat it down on the table, causing her sister to smile brightly at her. Lyric leaned over to whisper in her ear. "Don't forget to take your medicine, you need to take it with food." Rolling her eyes at her overprotective nature, Briar pulled out the pink bag that was shaped and looked like a macaroon. She opened it and pulled out the three pills she needed to take. She popped them in her mouth, and swallowed them down with her water. The three siblings watched her discreetly but didn't question anything.
Too soon, the bell rang, indicating their reprieve from classes was over. They all stood up and everyone was surprised when Jasper spoke up. "What class do the two of you have next?" Lyric smiled at him, and Briar snickered to herself when she realized that it was her flirty smile she reserved for boys she thought were cute. "B and I have gym next, it's the only class we have together." Alice clapped her hands and bounced again on her feet. "Yay!" She squeaked excitedly. "We all have gym together!" Briar couldn't be happy about that because they would notice that she didn't participate due to doctor's orders, and she didn't want them to know. They all walked to the gym with each other, Alice filling the silence with excitement. When they reached the gym, Lyric and Briar headed over to the coach while the others walked over to the table to get their new clothes that they'd have to change into. Lyric handed him her form, which he signed and told her to pick up her uniform. Briar sighed as she handed him her form accompanied by the doctor's note. He smiled gently as if he expected it, of course he did. "Briar, I'd like you to still change into the uniform, okay? Since you are on a limited physical exertion schedule, you should do what feels comfortable to you. I don't want you to participate in the sports we'll play this year, but we'll figure this out together, okay?" Briar nodded and was thankful he would let her participate a bit. At her last school, the coach wouldn't even allow her to change, but made her sit in the bleachers and watch. After they changed, they all stepped back into the main area and her heart sank. Volleyball nets were set up, and she knew she couldn't do that. The coach gave her a gentle smile and told her she could do her schoolwork if she wanted. Lyric smiled at her, but she knew that she hated her limitations.
Her final class of the day was AP Biology. She waited for Lyric to change back into her normal clothes, but Edward was there first. He didn't question why she hadn't participated during gym, but smiled as he spoke. "What's your next class? Maybe I can actually walk you this time." Briar felt herself relaxing around him. He seemed genuinely kind. "Oh, I have AP Biology with Mr. Banner next." He gave her a full smile this time. She was stunned by his beauty momentarily. "Wow, we have all the same classes this semester." Briar bit her lip as her cheeks flamed once more before they were joined by Jasper, Alice, and Lyric. Alice had apparently heard their conversation. "You two better leave so you can get a table together," she stated. "You know Bella will try and sit with you if you don't." Edward's beautiful smile fell off his face at Alice's words as he scowled at his sister. Lyric snickered next to her. "What is her deal anyway?" she asked. "Eric told me that she was a total bitch to my sister. I'd hate to kick someone's ass on the first day of school." A startled laugh escaped Briar as she glanced at her sister. "Lyric! You can't get into fights, you promised mom and dad!" Lyric simply shrugged at her. "No one messes with my sister." Briar shook her head in amusement before looking at Edward. "Should we head out? I don't want to be late." He nodded and they proceeded to say goodbye to the other three and headed off towards the class. Luckily it didn't take too long and there were still several tables open. "You go ahead and give Mr. Banner your form." He said quietly next to her. "I'll get us a table." She nodded as she walked up to Mr. Banner with her form. He was distracted so it took him a moment to take it from her and sign it. "Pick your seat carefully, Ms. Michaels because that's your lab partner for the semester. Books are already on the tables." She thanked him and turned towards the classroom only to come to a stop. Bella was standing next to Edward's table, trying to sit down. He looked up at her and gave her such a subtle nod that Bella didn't register it. As she walked closer, hesitating to get in the middle of yet another argument, she noticed Bella trying to move his bag.
"What do you mean I can't sit here, Edward?" She demanded an answer from him. "We're allowed to sit wherever we want so move your bag!" Briar was really starting to dislike this girl. She didn't want to because she tried to give everyone a chance, but she was just very confrontational. When she arrived at the table, she stood next to Edward. He had his arm extended and his hand on his bag sitting on the seat. When Bella saw her, her face flushed with anger. "No, absolutely not, I'm going to Mr. Banner." They watched as Bella stomped over to their teacher incredulously. Edward removed his bag this time, and Briar didn't hesitate to sit on the stool next to Edward. They saw Mr. Banner glance at their table and then speak to Bella who became increasingly angry. When it was obvious that Mr. Banner wasn't willing to force Briar to move and make Edward sit with her, so she sank into a chair next to a pretty Hispanic girl with large glasses on her face. Briar turned to Edward with an eyebrow raised. "Goodness, Edward, what did you do to her?" He grimaced and shook his head. "That's a conversation for another time." He said cryptically. "Thank you for sitting with me, Briar."
When school was over for the day, Edward walked her to the parking lot and to his Volvo to wait for their siblings. After a few minutes, Alice skipped towards them with a smile. "How was Biology?" She asked, almost singing. Edward glanced down at her, and his lips quirked somewhat as if stifling a smile. "It was pretty boring, but it was just the first day." Soon Jasper and Lyric joined them, Lyric talking animatedly with Jasper who seemed flustered at the attention. Alice was practically beaming at the sight but didn't address it as she spoke. "I hope you guys enjoy shopping. I'd really love a girl's day soon. We can invite our sister, Rosalie, to come along." Edward snorted at that but didn't say anything. Lyric and Briar loved shopping. They hadn't been able to do it with her illness and moving so they both smiled brightly at the dark-haired girl. They said goodbye for the day and walked towards their own car. Lyric offered to let Briar drive, but she was content to be the passenger. When they arrived home, their house being a bit out of the way and not close to town, both parents rushed out of the house. Their mother's stunning red hair flew around her face as she ran, and their father's dimples showing from his smile. They pulled the girls into hugs and regarded their expressions. Their dad chuckled as he looked at them. "You two look like you actually had a good day." Briar returned his smile with one of her own. "We had a great day, daddy."
