Prologue

The Dance That Makes A Fairys' Ring

.

.

Makoto Naegi had a secret: He was bored.

.

.

{~ The Biggest Tragic Event in Human History ~}

.

.

That's right! Once Upon a Time, twelve years ago, the Hopeful Makoto Naegi was a bored little guy of the age of five. Makoto possessed analytical prowess, which made him bored. This ability enabled Makoto to analyze his surroundings quickly with almost superhuman fast and detailed thinking. This talent gave him an excellent ability to make very detailed plans in a short amount of time.

He was also excellent at reading others, as well as manipulation when needed. He could often predict what a person was going to do before they did it - an ability he can use to defeat opponents much stronger than himself. However, it was also this ability that threw the poor and lonely boy into boredom since he could accurately guess how events would play out. Until one day … things took an unexpected turn.

Two years later, his parents died in a car crash. His sister wept for two months. Makoto got over it after a week. Not because he felt better, but because he got bored. Don't misunderstand, Makoto loved his parents deeply, but the despair and grief of losing his parents eventually became so boring to him that despair had become a boring period.

So, it wasn't much of a surprise that Makoto didn't seem all that interested at the funeral. Sure, he looked sad, but he was mostly faking it for his little sister, Komaru. The only ones who could tell Makoto was faking it were his older brothers, Hajime and Izuru. Of course, however, neither dared to call Makoto out on it. It may come as a surprise, but despite wanting nothing more than for Makoto to be happy and to be loved by him, the Twins were terrified of their younger brother.

Makoto's fuse is rather long, but when pushed, he became someone to fear. One time, a banker who was harassing their parents made him so mad, he framed him for embezzlement … and got away with it. It was so bad, there was literally ZERO evidence to prove that the man was innocent. For extra measure, Makoto could find an unsolved murder case and pin it on him with "solid" evidence to prove he did it. He was now spending life in prison … without the possibility of parole.

He even made one of Komaru's bullies regret crossing him and caused the bully to have a severe mental breakdown. The bully was now sitting in a mental institution as a warning to those who mess with his family. However, to his siblings, Makoto was THAT bad of a person, really. He just had a bad time dealing with his emotions, especially his boredom..

.

.

There were many great things about Makoto … like his … particular … interest in people.

.

.

{~ New World Order ~}

.

.

Makoto liked to collect friends. He had a knack for picking random people up like lost puppies and claiming them as his friends. And the people he immediately becomes friends with simply go along with it.

Makoto, despite his constant boredom, had an uncanny ability to make people feel hope. Feeling gloomy? Makoto will tell you to hope that things will get better, because it WILL happen eventually. Got a hard moment in life? He was actually a very good listener, and could give very good advice as well. After the funeral, Suzume Kobayashi, one of their aunts, took in Makoto, Komaru, Izuru, and Hajime to live with her. And that's how it happened. That were Makoto discovered the secrets.

The secrets mankind had long forgotten. What are those secrets?

.

Let's find out.

{~ Goodbye, Despair Academy ~}

.

.

A six year old Makoto was walking through the forest in the mountains near Oborozuka. He just had to get out of Aunt Kobayashi's apartment. He was utterly bored. Makoto looked up at the night sky and sighed, "This is boring. I wish something interesting would happen." Be careful what you wish for.

Not soon after he said that, he tripped and landed on his face.

.

.

{~ Goodbye, Despair Academy end ~}

.

.

"Ow, ow, ow!" Makoto cried. Makoto hated pain. One, it hurt and torturous. Two, it was simply boring. Fortunately, as if by magic, the pain vanished at the sound of … her voice.

"Are you okay?" That voice … trying to describe her voice was like attempting to describe beauty to the blind, music to the deaf, walking to the lame, and sanity to the insane. Makoto was unprepared for what came next. He looked and his analytical ability stopped working. His heart stopped beating. His words refused to be made.

.

.

{~ Peaceful Hearts ~}

.

.

For the first time in his young life, Makoto wasn't bored. Oh, no. The pure beauty who stood before him enchanted him. Her hair was golden and extended to her waist, with eyes as blue as the ocean. She wore white and gold Victorian dress complete with a hat and umbrella. She wore no shoes, but she wore gorgeous pale skin and a warm and playful smile that promised hope and joy to all who saw it. Makoto sat there speechless, gaping at the literally glowing girl like an idiot who forgot their name … which, at the moment, he kind of did.

"Hello," the girl smiled. "My name is Lleucu. It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance."

This moment paralyzed Makoto. It was as if his brain would shut down at any moment.

"And … you are?" Lleucu giggled. Makoto his head shook quickly.

"M-M-M-My name is Makoto Naegi!" Makoto squealed. Lleucu giggled as Makoto cursed himself. He bet she thought he sounded like an idiot. However, he was completely wrong.

"How endearing," she voiced her thoughts, surprising Makoto. Makoto once again found himself entranced by the glowing beauty's smile. Lleucu extended her hand and asked, "Would you like to get up, or would you prefer to keep sitting on the ground?" Makoto looked at Lleucu's hand and took it. Lleucu giggled as Makoto stood up and dust himself off.

This was a first for Makoto. He was never one to get embarrassed. But this girl … this girl was something else. Makoto didn't feel bored anymore. In fact, he'd go as far as saying that he was enjoying himself. Makoto wanted to blush, to cry, to smile, to laugh. He felt embarrassed, happy, intrigued, excited. For the first time in a long time, he felt … hope.

"So," Lleucu smiled. "What are you doing out at night, especially someone as young as you?"

"A-Are you really one to talk to?" Makoto asked nervously.

"Trust me," she laughed. "I'm older than I look."

'She's pretty, but I don't think she's all there.' Makoto thought. 'However, it would be rude of me to not answer.' So, they sat down as Makoto told Lleucu his life story.

.

.

{~ Peaceful Hearts end ~}

.

.

.

"I see." Lleuce said. "So, you're trying to cure your endless boredom?"

"Yeah, but nothing seems to work, at least not long term." Makoto started with a cute pout. "The only thing that keeps me from getting bored is friends and my siblings, but that is only short-term."

"What about me?" Lleucu asked. "Do I bore you?" Makoto panicked. He didn't want to lose his new friend, especially with how he was feeling around her.

"N-N-No! Of course not!" Makoto cried. "In fact, I think it has been the longest I've been without being bored."

"Really?" Lleucu giggled.

"Yeah! It's almost like ..." Lleucu gave him a knowing smile and said, "... Like ... magic?" Makoto stared at her with wide eyes and his mouth open. Suddenly, Makoto heard something.

"D-Did hear that?" Makoto asked.

"Hear what?" Lleucu replied with a smile and question.

"It … sounded like … tiny bells."

"Ah! You mean my children. They must have finally arrived.

.

.

{~ To The Fairies They Draw Near - Loreena McKennitt ~}

.

.

"Ch-Children!?" Makoto exclaimed. How could a little girl like her have children of her own at her age? Lleucu laughed and said, "Have you ever wondered where nature gets its glow?"

"... Huh?"

"Who gives it light and color as the seasons come and go? Helps all creatures, great and small, to walk, to swim, to fly? Crafts such tiny details?" Lleucu inched her face closer to Makoto's with a smile of infectious hope. She continued and said, "You might see them … if you tried." Makoto was so distracted by Lleucu, he failed to notice a ball of light flying past his head, the sound bell accompanying it. Lleucu stood up as she sang with the most beautiful that Makoto had ever heard.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ When the moon comes up to the shine come face

The birds are fast asleep ~

.

.

Suddenly, floating lights shot past the duo at near eye-blinking speed. Makoto looked around with wide eyes as Lleucu simply stood and continued singing.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ When the lanterns hang from every post

The fairies leave the keep

They join their hands and sing their songs that nary a soul can hear

In the springtime when the earth is new

To the fairies they draw near ~

.

.

Makoto continued to look at the orbs of light with childish amazement, failing to notice that Lleucu was walking away toward the Orbs' path.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ To the fairies they draw near ~

.

{~ To The Fairies They Draw Near - Loreena McKennitt end~}

Makoto finally noticed her leaving and, much like Alice before him, his curiosity forced him to follow.

.

.

{~ To The Fairies They Draw Near, Part II by Loreena McKennitt ~}

.

.

Makoto continued to look at the orbs of light with wonder as he continued to follow Lleucu. As three of them drew near, Makoto found his analytical ability had shut down again, this time completely. One of them had a tall (or as tall as you could get, being six inches high), hourglass figure, light blue eyes, long, thick, strawberry blonde hair tied in two pigtails, and pointy ears. She wore a dark purple vest with pink feathers and dark purple pants.

On the three-inch woman's right was another one. She and Pigtails shared the same average height. She had a slim figure, similar in appearance to her rose petal sister, but there are some notable differences. Leafy Green's eyes were less rounded and more slanted, and pointy ears. She had short, layered, bobbed black hair and freckles across the bridge of her nose. She wore a leafy sleeveless top and knee-length pants.

The third girl had dark red eyes, matching the color of her long, disheveled hair, and pointy ear. She wore a rose petal dress in three shades. What all three had in common: all three had clear wings on their backs. Makoto started with his mouth ajar. All the while, Lleucu sang again.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Come away with me now to the sky ~

.

.

"L-Lleucu …" Makoto said as the three tiny, winged girls invaded his personal space. Leafy Green hid in the pocket of his hoodie to hide her blush, Rose Petals sat on his shoulder with pride, waving her tiny fists in the air with triumph, and Pigtails took up residence in his fluffy hair, a big mischievous smile plastered on her face. Makoto spun around briefly and noticed all the lights were tiny people with wings.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Up all the hills and the sea

Far beyond where memories lie ~

.

.

Lleucu walked across a small pond that surrounded a tiny island where a giant and proud mushroom sat.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ To a place where I'm free to be me ~

.

.

Makoto held a fairy that sat on its knees in his palms. She had tanned skin, blue eyes, and a rather curvaceous body. She wore her brown hair in a ponytail and a blue lily petal dress. Makoto giggled, "Lleucu, these are …" His voice died in his throat. His mouth remained open.

Standing on the mushroom smiling, Lleucu wore a long, light, shimmering, pale yellow dress, light, golden, shimmering, large, yellow, glittery, monarch butterfly-shaped wings. Her golden hair was now in an up-do style with a tiara, revealing her pointy ears. Makoto knew what she was. He was ... just trying to remember the word. Suddenly, the tiny, winged people swirled around her before bursting forth in a rainbow of magnificent colors. Makoto remembered the word now. They were …

"… Fairies." Makoto barely breathed. The commotion drew the attention of other creatures in the forest. Light within trees and slightly large mushrooms revealed windows and doors, unveiling the homes of Brownies and Smurfs. Makoto did the smart thing and fell to his knees in stunned silence as he watched the creatures that were considered myth literally come out of the woodwork.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Oh Gather it now one and all ~

.

.

Two centaurs walked to the edge of the pond to watch the fairies' dance. Dryads sat in the trees, listening to the melody of the Fairy Queen. Though, some dryads were more attracted to the cute, human child sitting at the edge of the water (perverted nymphs).

.

.

Lleucu: ~ No matter what folly may do ~

.

.

A few of the fairies danced around Lleucu in a large circle, glowing mushrooms sprouting at their feet.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Let the stars fill your soul when the moon cradles all

So, to yourself be true! ~

.

.

The sound of small splashing briefly distracted Makoto. Three women floated in the water, beckoning him over. Makoto gave them a poker face. He knew what's up. He wasn't stupid. Those women were naiads, and if his childhood friend, Madison Porter, taught him anything in her mythology lectures, it was that naiads were the most untrustworthy of nymphs. On that happy note, Makoto did the smart thing and scooted a safe distance away from the water. The naiads pouted briefly before shrugging their shoulders, and began to synchronized swim, joining the fairies in the dance.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ The blanket of snow is all gone

Each flower waits for the sun ~

.

.

Four satyrs sat at the edge of the forest alongside a few drinking dwarves. A few forest elves decorated the trees, watching the spectacle with interest.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ And the breeze bring tears of the rain

Oh, Its promise for everyone ~

.

.

Makoto watched as the fairies flew in an amazing dance. Little did he know, however, he had caught the attention of a teenage elf girl, who watched his childish amazement from the trees. Her tiara glistened on over her long, dark hair that reached down to her waist. Her blue eyes watching Makoto from afar.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Then come away with me, friends!

No matter where you call your home

With the light in your hearts

We will never part

No matter how far we roam ~

.

.

Makoto watched as the naiads jumped, the fairies flew across the water. He watched the brownies dance in the trees and the Smurfs celebrated in the grass. The Dwarves drank in merriment, the elves and centaurs nodded their heads as satyrs chased dryads.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Deep in the forest we go ~

.

.

One fairy went around waking all the diurnal animals. His skin tone is noticeably pale and grayish compared to the other characters, which could suggest that he doesn't get out much. His hair color is black with pale gray streaks through it. This may either be due to bleaching his hair or a melanin deficiency known as poliosis, giving him several 'Mallen streaks'. He had no eyebrows. He also had gray eyes.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Creatures are all fast asleep

With a kiss and a wink, we will awaken our souls

And long is the safety we'll keep ~

.

.

Makoto stood up and slowly twirled, taking in everything he was seeing. Every. Single. Fantastical detail.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ And then, then we'll dance with the night ~

.

.

The joy.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Till the sun peeking sparkle at dawn ~

.

.

The beauty.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ And away we will go

Like last winter's snow ~

.

.

And Mokoto's eyes. Eyes once filled with boredom and hated despair …

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Soon our work will be done. ~

.

.

The Fairies shot to the sky.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Oh, gather it now, one and all

No matter what folly may do ~

.

.

It was the biggest, most beautiful, most hope-inspiring thing Makoto had ever seen. And the best part … he wasn't getting bored. It was as if the fantastical secret was curing him of his boredom. And he could get enough.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ Let the stars fill your soul when the moon cradles all ~

.

.

The Fairy Queen smiled as she looked at the sky, fairies dancing and flying, making it look as the stars were spinning.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ So, to yourself be true ~

.

.

Then, every creature in the area but a dancing, spellbound Makoto joined Queen Lleucu in her song.

.

.

Everyone: ~ Oh gather it now one and all

No matter what folly may do

Let the stars fill your soul when the moon cradles all

So, to yourself be true ~

.

.

Makoto stopped dancing and looked down at the ground to see a particular fairy. He had a rather thin and petite build, being shorter than almost all the other fairies. The fairy had spiky, desaturated brown hair with a prominent ahoge, and washed-out hazel eyes. He also had pointy ears and a pair of clear wings on his back.

The fairy looked at before giving a genuinely hopeful smile.

Makoto could feel a special connection with this fairy. For you see, fairy legend states that the first time that a baby laughs, a fairy's life takes flight. Thus, Makoto was, in particular, responsible for the life of this fairy. Tears streamed into Makoto's eyes as they glowed with shimmering hope.

.

.

Lleucu: ~ So, to yourself be true ~

.

.

Makoto returned a perfectly hopeful smile. The first genuine smile in his six years.

Makoto Naegi.

.

How would one sum up this young analyst nowadays? When considering the question, there's mainly one word that comes to mind.

.

That word … was "Average".

.

Makoto Naegi was undeniably, undisputedly, unironically, well and truly, absolutely, without a doubt a very average person.

.

.

{~ Beautiful Days ~}

.

.

Makoto has a rather thin and petite build, being shorter than almost all of his friends. He has spiky, desaturated brown hair with a prominent ahoge, and washed-out hazel eyes. He wore a zipped-up dull green hoodie with a red stripe along the zipper, an open black jacket with gold buttons over the hoodie, black jeans, and red sneakers with white toes. Makoto's hoodie had a logo of a red gas mask in a circle printed on the back of the hood.

He wears a pin shaped like a four-pointed star overlaid on a crescent moon pinned to the lapel of his jacket. Aside from his hidden talent, his only distinctive personality trait is "optimism". Plus, his Omni-Charisma, as people called it. That superhuman ability to make friends with anything, anyone, everything, and everyone. So, how did someone like that get into a school like this?

.

Hope's Peak Academy.

.

The school that brings the best students from every field imaginable. If you go there and graduate, they set you for life. Built to raise hope in the nation's future. There are two things you need to attend this school. One, you need to be a highschool student already, and two, you need to be the best at what you do. No ordinary student could simply go there. In order to be enrolled, you'd have to be scouted.

Unlike many other Ultimates, however, Makoto was pretty much average, even he'd say so himself. Average looks, average high scores, and average preference. If you asked him what song he liked, it'll most likely be the one currently at the top of the charts. Sure, he could shake it up with his analytical ability, but ever since he discovered the Secrets, he liked to be average. It made him feel unique in the true reality of the world.

So, I ask again - How does someone like that get into a school like this? Well, according to Makoto's invitation, Hope's Peak spelled it out plain as day. L-U-C-K. Luck. The school did an annual poll for one regular student to enroll in the school's main course, and Makoto was the winner, making him the second Ultimate Lucky Student (Ultimate Lucky Student II). And so, Makoto stood at the gate of Hope's Peak Academy, a hopeful smile on his face with a hint of mischief. He looked at the letter in his left hand, then at a book in his right. To the people who didn't know Makoto, it was just your average journal or diary or old, dusty family heirloom. But those who did ... knew it was so much. Makoto took a deep breath and said, "Let's Begin."

And with that, he walked through the gate.

On top of a building across from Hope's Peak stood five girls. One on the far right is a fair-skinned young girl with silver eyes and black, neck-length, choppy hair that graduates to dark red at the tips. She sported a white, high-neck decolletage blouse. Her outfit used a black and red skirt with an overbust corset. A black belt bordered in red holds the magnetic clip for a sort of gun and its ammunition. She also had brown straps on her blouse. Red wore thigh-high stockings reaching to a few inches below the hem of her skirt, decorated by an image of a long-stemmed rose. Her red-soled black boots contained four straps and buckles apiece. Her cloak had a singular clip on the right shoulder in the shape of her emblem. Both the cloak and the stockings showed tears from hard wear.

On Red's left is a pale skinned young girl with pale blue eyes and long white hair pulled back into an off-center bun tail and pinned with an icicle shaped tiara. A crooked scar runs vertically down her left eye. She wore a short, glittering dress with a color gradation of blue to pale blue at the hem, a sweetheart neckline, and a white, tulle petticoat. The girl wrapped a white ribbon multiple times around her waist, and over the outfit was a slightly sheer long-sleeved blue shrug fastened at the collar with a large, sapphire broach that had three pendants dangling from it. Printed on the back of the shrug was a snowflake. Completing her attire were dark blue wedge heels and sapphire drop earrings.

Snowflake is a fair-skinned young girl with amber eyes and long black hair. She has black cat ears, a symbol of her heritage and wore purple eyeshadow in cat's eye style. She wore a long, white coat with dark gray lining and a sleeveless black crop top. The crop top had rectangular and diamond shaped cutouts around the neckline. Across her torso was a diagonal strap that contained a smaller magnetic clip used to sheathe her weapon. She wore thigh-high black heeled boots with gold-colored edging around the top. The left boot had a belt wrapped twice around the thigh. Each boot bears her emblem in white on the outer side of the thigh, and she attached a white pouch to the back of her belt.

On her left is a fair-skinned young girl with purple eyes and bright golden hair worn loose that fades to pale gold at the tips with a cowlick sticking out at the top. She was wearing a tan jacket with orange lining and gold edging, unzipped halfway to show an orange crop top. The coat had darker brown short sleeves, a thick collar that completely encircles her neck, and two long gold-trimmed rectangular tails. She also wore fitted black pants, and her hair was down again. Around her hips and over the tails of her coat was a brown belt, which had two pieces of dark brown material trimmed in gold attached to it. The first covered from her left hip to the back of the belt and folded over the belt, and she attached the second from the right hip and almost around to the other piece of material. She wore knee high brown boots with gold caps on the heel and toe, with the heel cap attaching to a gold strap across the front of her ankle, and a gold zipper on the upper half of the front of the boots. A single small buckled strap was on the upper outside of her boots, and a purple bandana tied around her left knee. A pair of black fingerless gloves with long brown cuffs reaching to mid forearm completed the outfit.

In the dead center of the four girls, the last girl watched Makoto enter the academy. A nine-tailed fox girl with fair-skinned, silver eyes, and white hair and fur. She wore her pale-blue hair down and with a braid on the side, tied with a black ribbon. The Kitsune wore a white kimono, resembling a goddess' robe from Japanese folklore with a revealing neckline, a translucent sash, and rainbow outlines (think Bifrost from "Thor"). She decorated her kimono in a few places with silver armored plating.

Nine-tails smiled warmly at the Ultimate lucky student from at the top of the building and said, "I'm home …
