"Stefan hang in their, you'll be alright," Bonnie clutched Stefan's shoulder as he cried out in pain. He held his head, digging his finger nails into it.
"What's happening to him?" Caroline asked standing behind Bonnie.
Suddenly it was getting harder to keep Stefan still he started to shake uncontrollablely and started to slash back and forth. "He's becoming unstable, grab my spellbook!"
Stefan grasped Bonnie's hand tightly "No!"
"What? Why?"
Stefan's breathing was harsh but he mustered up the words "Elena's in the past. I'm remembering things that didn't happen originally." His voice started to give out as he was slipping into unconsciousness but manged to say "We have to help her!" Bonnie watched as he passed out.
"What just happened?" Caroline asked, moving to Stefan's side.
"I don't know. But what we do know is that Elena's in trouble and we need to figure out a way to get her back. I have this feeling she was sent to 1864 for a reason."
"But how are we going to get her back? She's like 100 years in the past!?"
"We find Emily and use the Grimoire." Bonnie and Damon say in unison. Both Bonnie and Caroline wip their heads towards Damon.
"I knew her back in the day, you really that suprised?" Damon asks.
"Yes." They both say in unison.
"Are you having the same reaction as Stefan?"
"Sort of. Not nearly as bad as he is. As much as I hate to say it but they have a strong connection that's why we need to find her."
Damon continued, "But first we need the Grimoire and the place where it all started."
"The graveyard." Bonnie realized.
"Exactly bonbon."
"Why do we need the Grimoire?"
"To summon Emily of course, Blondie."
"Who's going to watch Stefan while he's in this…state?"
"Bonnie, he'll be fine, he can handle his own. He's not a kid anymore, he doesn't need protection."
"Yes he does! He cried out in pain, he dug his finger nails in his scalp because it hurt so much. If he's in this much he does need to be watched and cared for. You're his brother you should know that better than anyone." Bonnie looked furious, Damon knew he messed up.
"Alright, alright your right. Call Elena's brother, Jeremy." Damon said with some bitterness in his voice after saying Jeremy's name.
"Why do you hate him so much?" Bonnie questioned.
"I have my reasons. Know I'll be outside with Barbie, you should call Jeremy and tell him about our little…situation." Damon turned away and walked to the door meeting Caroline there. The pair exit the doorway and maked their way to Damon's car.
Bonnie walked over the couch and dialed Jeremy's number. Almost immediately he picked up. Before he could say anything she started with "Hey Jer I need to talk to you about something there's no easy way to say this or say this without sounding crazy but…"
The Graveyard
"Caroline, Damon do you all have the ingredients?
"Yes, I have the Candles, lighter, and the pure water." Caroline placed the items on the mossy grass and then stood back up and asked "But how are these items supposed to help us? It seems to simple, too easy,"
"It's never that simple, Care." Bonnie placed her hand on Carolines shoulder and walked over towards Damon. She then continued to say" The spell is where it gets complicated." She then turned to Damon motioning for the rest of the items. He gladly handed them to her. She swore that his hands lingered longer than normal. But she thought she was just hallucinating until he smirked at her. She felt her cheek ting with a light blush but she looked away before he saw. And yet somehow he knew, he always knew. Caroline watched the pair with confusion, she kept looking in between the two and then suddenly realized but said nothing for now. She could also tell Bonnie wanted the subject even if it wasn't said, changed. So she started with "What was the other ingredients?" Caroline asked with fake clulessness.
Bonnie's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "But their right here?" Caroline looped her arm around Bonnie's shoulder. " Why don't you just tell me about ok?" And in that moment Bonnie realized what she was doing. "Well, the other ingredients are Chalk, bowl, blood, and hair." Bonnie looked over at Caroline and said "Gross I know, but it's worth it Elena's our best friend. We've got to get her back." You could see the determination in her eyes and how her voice was firm but low.
Bonnie turned away and placed the rest of the items on the ground. Bonnie grabbed the bowl and repotioned it in front of her. "Could one of you draw a circle with the chalk?" Her voice was firm, she looked at both of them in the corner of her eye. Caroline was the first to move and grabbed the Chalk. Carfully but surly she drew the circle around the bowl.
She placed the candles on the chalked circle. Which surrounded the bowl. "Damon, light the candles." Damon handed her the lighter with a nod. After he lighted the candles Bonnie then poured the pure water, blood, and sprinkled the hair. She grabbed the lighter from where Damon left it and lighted the remains. After doing so she spoke up "Get ready I'm about to start this spell and it isn't going to be easy nor pretty." Damon and Caroline nodded slowly.
Bonnie stood up and hovered over the bowl. She placed her hands in front of her as she started to read the grimoire page and mutter the incantation "Swift on the heel throu comest, Thrice summoned by my spell, Thrice troubled by my burning. Come without delay. Emily Bennet I summon you." Suddenly there was a bright light and everything went dark.
1864
Elena Gilbert or was it Gillett? It doesn't matter anyways sat idly on the Sofa reading a book. That was until she heard Emily scream. She immediately dropped her book and ran towards the kitchen area were she heard her scream.
"Oh my god." Elena stumbled back for a split second once she arrived at the door way. But quickly recovered herself and rushed to her side. "Emily stay with me, your going to be fine."
Emily grabbed her hand and drew her closer "Ms. Gilbert listen to me now, my ancestor is trying to contact me, summon me you must get me upstairs before anyone sees." Elena nodded as she grabbed onto her waist and pulled her upstairs. "Be careful, no one can hear us." As they walked up the stairs Elena stumbled but managed to get Emily to her room.
Once they arrived she helped Emily to the bed. Elena knelt down, she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. She looked Emily over and then said "What's going to happen to you?" Elena had a worries expression on her face.
" there's no need to worry about me."
Elena looked shock, "How can I not worry? You screamed out in pain and now Bonnie is summoning you with a spell."
"To answer your question I'll disappear but it won't be for long. But I know this, their only doing this to help you they need answers and I intend to help them. They mean no true harm but most spells are painful. Do not fret ." Elena nodded slowly. Suddenly Emily's screamed out in pain and leaned forward. Elena eyes went wide she tried to hold her down. "It's okay M-" And then she was gone. Elena stepped back in shock, trying to process what was going on. She must have thought 'Why did this spell hurt her so much?' 'What was happening back in 2011?' Elena stood their watching where Emily was. She noticed the crease on the bed but she looked to the side and saw a small mirror no larger than 5". She picked up and gasped at what she saw. Bonnie. Caroline. Damon. And Stefan, oh Stefan. Everyone is okay, including him. Thank god.
2011
Damon caught Bonnie after she fell into unconsciousness. "Hey, Bonbon stay with me." Damon caressed her cheek. His voice sounded vulnerable and desperate.
Caroline rushed over to Bonnie with a worried expression on her face. "What happened?"
"I don't know!"
Suddenly their was a thud and they both whipped around to they see Emily Bennett unconsciousness on the ground.
"What the-?" Damon cursed as he saw her.
Emily gasped as she awoke from unconsciousness. She looked around quickly. And then Bonnie woke seconds after Emily. "Bonnie?" "I'm okay Damon,"
Bonnie looked over at Emily and slowly walked over to her. "You're Emily aren't you?"
"Indeed I am,"
Bonnie went to open her mouth but Emily was not having it. "Do not apologize this needed to be done."
"How did you know..?"
"I just do now we are not going to fret over this." Emily expressed sincerely. She moved to stand up, and straightened her dress. Afterwards she pulled Bonnie up.
"Did she just give Bonnie a pep talk…?" Caroline leaned towards Damon, she whispered this in confusion.
Damon blinked in confusion, after a few seconds he regained his composure and whisper shouted "Yes!" Damon leaned back towards the blond and continued with "Isn't she always the one who gives us the pep talks. This is kind of…" Damon trailed off. But after a second they both said in unison "weird…?"
"Yeah no kidding." She crossed her arms, continuing to watch both witches.
"I'm not one to ask abrupt questions but are you going to ask the questions you've been waiting for since the moment I came here?" Emily raised her brow in a questioning manner. Bonnie looked shocked, taken aback even.
Damon saw this and took the chance to ask everyone's burning question "Is Elena really in the past?"
Emily turned towards Damon, she observed "Damon Salavtore you've changed since I last saw you." Emily looked unsurprised.
"More ways than one."
"I see…She turned you didn't she?"
"Ding ding ding." Sarcasm was Damon's favorite way to display his emotions. Whether he was angry or losing his patience, you name it.
"You're angry and impatient. I understand, but if you give me some of your time I will answer all of your questions."
"You don't understand E-" Bonnie interrupted and walked towards him. "Damon, she'll give us our answers, don't worry." She hissed the words at first but as she continued to speak her words came out softer. She touched his shoulder, hoping to bring him comfort. She looked up at him and he saw her pleading eyes. Damon sighed looking towards the ground but then back at her "Fine!...But only for…you." He whispered the last part of his sentence only she could hear. But Caroline knew all too well, she had a knowing smile plastered on her pale features. But Bonnie chose to ignore it
"To answer your question, she is in the past. But I will do anything to help her. Katherine needs to be stopped but I won't let her hurt Elena. I won't let her hurt anyone anymore."
"Why did you in the first place?"
"Did what?"
"Help her?"
"I thought she was a good person but I learned very quickly she wasn't. When I tried to pull away she assured my family, offsprings would be protected if I helped her. But something awful would happen to them if I didn't."
"Sooo in other words you were blackmailed." Caroline asked.
"Long story short, yes."
"Why aren't you afraid anymore?" Damon asked.
"I have faith, she'll get what's coming to her after all of this time. I believe Elena is the key."
"Does she have to carry that burden alone?"
"I do believe she has too." Bonnie looked down in defeat. She felt worry wash over her.
"Don't looked so defeated, she does not have to carry this alone. She has you and her other friends, her family. She will never be alone not while we are all here. Just promise me something."
"What?"
"Be there for her. This is no easy task. But I expect nothing less from Bennett, Forbes, and Salvatore's."
"You know about Stefan?"
"Of course I do, don't expect anything less ." Emily turned away and said "What are your other questions?"
"Do you have any idea who that old witch or woman was?" Caroline asked.
"Not yet but I can certainly find out."
"And you seem to know everything, but this." Damon bellowed. Bonnie gave him a warningful look. While Caroline shook her head.
"I wish I knew ."
Caroline was deep in thought and she kept thinking 'Why was Elena sent back? There's something more going on.'
" ?" Emily began.
"What?" Caroline looked up, breaking away from her thoughts.
"Is there something you would like to ask me?"
"Oh right umm…Why was Elena sent back? We all keep hearing she can do it or she's the only one who can do it but why? Why her?"
"It's simple as she's Katherine's doppelgänger."
"Doppel what?" Caroline asked.
"Every 500 years there is a new doppleganger who looks like or Katherine. It's because of Niklaus Mikaelson. I'm sure you've heard the story."
"Yes we have." Bonnie replied looking uncomfortable.
"What happened? You look uneasy." Emily said, with concern in her voice.
"It's a story for another day, don't worry." Bonnie stated changing the subject. Damon and Caroline looked at one another in understanding they all felt that uncomfortable and tight breeze.
Emily felt like the wind was knocked out of her. She felt her breath shorten and felt as if she could pass out any second. She knew it was almost time. Emily lost her balance and her knee gave out.
"Emily!" Bonnie yelled racing to her side.
"What's happening to you?" Bonnie questioned as she tried to keep her steady. Caroline stood behind Bonnie kneeling towards her. Damon knelt on her left, holding onto Emily's arm. Emily mustered a small smile.
"It's almost time. Before I go to communicate with Elena, you'll need this." Emily hands Bonnie a hand held mirror.
"How are we supposed to use this to talk to her?" Bonnie questioned.
"It's a two way mirror, it's enchanted where you can talk to anyone you like no matter the time period. All you have to do is say their name or Elena's in your case and you'll be able to communicate with one another. I left a mirror in her room like this one in her room, don't worry." And as she said this she disappeared within thin air. Everyone stepped back shocked.
"What just happened?" Caroline asked.
"She disappeared into the thin air. This is crazy." Bonnie shook her head.
Damon blinked back his shock and mumbled "We need to get back to the boardinghouse."
"Agreed." The trio shared this thought, and voiced in unison.
2011
At the Salvatore Boarding house
Jeremy Gilbert sat on the Salvatore Sofa listening to Nirvana or was it Chemical Romance? It was one of those you really never knew with him. Anyways he sat on the sofa listening to music on his ipod with his earbuds. You might be thinking oh he's being demb listening to music while he should be watching out for Stefan. But he had one Earbud out and was also listening for when the gang got back. So not as stupid as any of us may have thought. He's growing up well, sort of the more grown up thing to do would probably be in the same room as him. But then again he's not an adult yet but he's making progress.
So far everything had been pretty quiet.I spoke too soon. I guess I spoke too soon, and jinked everything once again. You're about to see what I mean. Jeremy bolted towards the steps to Stefan's room. He heard him scream in anguish.
"Stefan !" Jeremy yelled as he arrived at his room rushing to his side.
"What can I do to help?"
Stefan rolled to his other side holding his head, gripping his scalp in a death grip.
"Stefan you have to stop! You're going to hurt yourself! Elena wouldn't want this!" Stefan loosened his grip but only a little.
Jeremy was trying to think 'How can I help him? What could I possibly…' His thoughts trailed off when it hit him. he knew what to do.
"Stefan, listened to me alright?"
"What?" Stefan growled.
"I know it's painful. But what does everyone do when it feels this way? We think about the people we love. I know you love my sister right?"
"Yes. But what?" Stefan asked in frustration.
"Ok, what you are going to do is latch on to an important memory of her. This is gonna sound weird coming from her brother but I'm going to say it anyways for your sake. Think of her smile how that makes you feel, think of all the times that smile made everything better, think of the hugs, think of holding her in your arms right now, think of her telling you to faith that it will be okay because she loves you. Find the memory that makes you forget on the pain and suffering, find the memory of when you all first met eyes and you saved her. Latch onto hold it tight and don't let go. Stefan you can do this." Jeremy put his heart and soul into this. He wanted his sister back more than anything. His sister and him have had many fights but he still loved her and they were all they had left. He was doing this for her; she wasn't here to help him but he was. So he did everything in his power to help him. Despite having fights he knew his sister cared for him and this was repaying some of the things she had for him in the past. He knew that if he didn't help him it would eat at him and he didn't want to be at Elena's warth. Let's just say it isn't pretty. But he also knew how heartbroken she was and he couldn't do that to her. He had seen that heartbreak when their parents died so he couldn't be the cause of it this time. But it wasn't just for Elena. He didn't just want to help him for her sake but for the sake of Stefan's life. He couldn't just sit there and wait for the others to get back, he had to do something. That was better than nothing at all. At least in his mind and in his heart.
Jeremy watched as Stefan's breathing slowed, he calmed down, and darkness overtook him. Not death, not a nightmare but a dream. A sweet dream of him and Elena.
"Well, done Jeremy." Damon clapped, you could hear his sarcasm from a mile away.
"He did good, he helped Stefan. Isn't that what we asked him to do?" Bonnie said giving Damon a look.
"Yes." Damon said in defeat. He really didn't like him.
"Exactly!" Caroline beamed excitedly, clapping her hands. She smiled warmly at the teenager.
"Thanks Caroline, Bonnie."
"What? I get no thanks?" Jeremy gave him a look and rolled his eyes. Damon grabbed his arm "Is there something you want to say."
"No there's nothing! Let me go."
"You're not worth it anyways!"
"Enough, can you two just stop fighting for once?" Bonnie kept looking at Damon daggers in her eyes. "Hey Care could you and Jer leave the room for a minute? I need to talk to Damon here."
"Yes," Caroline said, motioning for Jeremy to follow suit.
"So, you got me all to yourself." Damon said sarcastically.
"You're unbelievable? Why can't you just stop and think for a second? Huh why?"
"Because I can't stand anyone hurting you! Is that so hard to believe?!"
"What?"
"Don't act so surprised! I love you and I don't want anything bad to happen to you. And yeah I'm a little jealous of Gilbert over their ok, is it really that hard to believe?" Bonnie was taken aback. Suddenly she felt this urge to kiss him. And she did.
Damon staggered back surprised. But a welcomed one in his eyes. Bonnie looped her arm around Damon's neck. Damon placed his hand caressing her cheek. He deepened the kiss but Bonnie pulled away giggling softly at him. Damon smiled back at her.
"Ow!" Stefan threw a pillow at Damon. "What was that for?"
"Get a room you two I'm trying to sleep and not having the worst migraine of the century. And a migraine is putting it simply."
They both blushed furiously. Bonnie spoke up "Sorry Stefan we'll be on our way." Bonnie interlocked her arm with his. The pair started to walk but Bonnie stopped and said "When your feeling up to it, I believe we have a way to contact Elena."
"You do?"
"Yes,"
"But first get some rest Stefan." Before he could interject they both walked out.
Stefan was exhausted and fell back into unconsciousness.
Stefan's POV
"Stefan, Stefan wake up!" Elena's soft voice called.
"Elena? What?" I sat up to look at her. We were in a meadow. It was gorgeous. There were purple flowers of all kinds surrounded by us. It was quite romantic. But she looked even more gorgeous. She looked like an angel with the sunlight surrounding her ever so perfectly. 'God I missed her so much.' I moved over to cup her face, our faces were inches apart. I closed the gap between the two of us. And I kissed her gently but passionately. I pulled away slowly and asked "Is this a dream?"
"It is, but it's the best dream we could both ask for." Elena leaned into my touch.
"You're right. We must make the most of it then." I layed back down on the meadow and she snuggled close to my chest.
After a few minutes of silence I spoke up and asked "What's it like Elena?"
"What's like?" She looked up at me with those beautiful doe eyes.
"Being in the past with me but not with me at the same time."
"You should know this." She cupped my face and continued to say "It doesn't matter what time period it is you'll always be you no matter if you're human, vampire it doesn't matter because I love you unconditionally. You'll always be Stefan to me and I will always be Elena. No matter what form or how we different we are we'll always find each other. When I saw you in 1864 nothing felt different. All I felt was my love for you." I smile at her as we both lean in. She whispered "I love you, Stefan Salvatore." And I did the same. "I love you too, Elena Gilbert." The sun was brightening as we leaned forward, more and more that was the last thing I remembered as the dreams ended and we were separated once again. And then I woke up.
I jolted awake, even though it felt it was gone too fast I still enjoyed every minute of it. I smiled to myself as I moved the blanket over and turned to get up.
"Finally you're awake!" Damon exclaimed.
I whip my head around to get a better look at him. "What's wrong with you? It's creepy to watch people sleep you know!" I say.
"Yeah, yeah I get it. Also I was only here for like a minute I was here to get you up. You've been asleep for 3 hours!"
"Geez I slept that long?" I rub my neck and look at him with a puzzled expression.
"Yeah, now get dressed and meet us downstairs." I nod, and Damon leaves. I moved over to my closet and grabbed a black T-Shirt and Jeans.
I moved over to my bed and slipped my jeans on and then pulled my shirt over. I then went over to the bottom of my closet and grabbed one of my white pairs of socks and Frye Smith Harness boots. I slid my socks on and then my boots. I walked over to the door and headed downstairs. As much as I loved that dream I needed to see if she's okay, physically, mentally, emotionally. And I'll kill Katherine myself if she lays a finger on her.
Stefan Salvatore walked down the stairs and headed to the living area of the Salvatore boarding house. Damon, Bonnie, Caroline, and Jeremy turned to meet him.
Damon was the first to speak "The man of the hour. Let's do this little brother."
"How are we going to do this?" Stefan question.
"By using this of course." Damon held up a small mirror, a hand held one to be exact.
"How?" Stefan asked slowly. "It's a little small, don't you think?"
"Yes, but it's all we got." Damon said.
"How are we going to prop this up?" Bonnie asked.
"I can do it." We all turned to Caroline. She said it with such enthusiasm.
"After all I'm the beauty queen. And they call me Barbie for a reason." her ponytail swang as she walked over to position it.
"First I need Damon on the left, Bonnie on the right, Stefan in the middle of the two, Jeremy you come beside me in front of them and we'll be squatting while the others will be standing straight. Got it?"
"Yes," The group said, in unison. All the group members moved to there positions. Once there Bonnie spoke to the mirror. "Elena Gilbert, 1864." Magically Elena appears and she looks shocked. "Bonnie? Caroline? Damon? Jeremy? Stefan? How is this possible?" She asks.
"It's a long story, but that doesn't matter right now are you okay?" Bonnie asks with concern.
"Yes I'm fine. Hopefully it stays that way."
"Me too."
"How am I supposed to get back?"
Bonnie looks at Damon and then back at her "You have to stop Katherine?"
"I know that. Why me?"
"Emily said it's because your her doppleganger your the one who has the power to stop her."
"I don't have any powers, I'm not even a vampire."
"We'll figure it out down worry."
"Thanks, Bonnie."
"Your welcome,"
"Hey, Elena, how are you holding up?"
"I've been better, Jer but I'm glad you all are okay. I'll be fine and I'll figure this out one way or another. I have you all I know I can." Elena gave her brother a small smile.
"It'll be okay Elena, don't give up."
"I promise you I won't be not anytime soon, I love you."
"I love you too sis." Elena smiles and he smiles back at her.
"Elena, what's it been like there?" Caroline asks.
"It's been weird to say the least care. And a bit overwhelming."
Caroline nods understandingly but then says "All that matters is that your alright. We'll find a way."
"Always so positive Barbie!" Damon says. Caroline rolls her eyes.
"Be nice Damon," Elena warned.
"I'm always nice." Elena scoffs.
"But she's right, we're all glad you're alright." Elena smiles softly.
"Do you all mind if I talk to Elena alone?" The others nod in understand and separated to different rooms.
"What is it Stefan?" Elena asks softly.
"Are you really okay?"
"It's been difficult and weird and as I said before, overwhelming. I don't want her to win, I don't want her to win. I'm just scared. I wish I could touch your face, feel your touch again. "
"Me too, 'lena."
"As I said in the dream and yes I remember it you'll always be Stefan to me no matter if it's 1860s or 2011s you. I just wish he remebered everything we've shared. I couldn't help but fall so deeply in love with that version of you."
"I couldn't help it either. I wish I could hold you too. I love you,"
"I love you too." Elena paused for a second but then asked if she been worrying about her "Does it hurt remembering something that you weren't supposed to remember?"
"I'm glad I got to make those memories they'll never be painful in that sense. But rewriting my memory has hurt. But it's not your fault remeber that."
"How is it not my fault. I should have never intervened."
"Elena, you didn't know this would happen. This is the consequence of stopping Katherine. Knowing that I get a migraine instead of Katherine winning that's the best thing I could ask for. It's not your fault, don't turn away just because you're scared. Be brave sweetheart, don't give up." Elena's eyes teared up and she nodded. "I love you st-" Before Elena could reply Katherine startled her. "Who are you talking to/" Elena whipped her head to look at her. Fear engulfed her. It was written all over her face, her heart was beating so fast in her chest she must have been worried that it would jump out. She hid the mirror behind her back. "No one," "Really?" "Then why are you so scared? Hmm?" Stefan didn't make a peep worried that Katherine would tear her apart into little pieces if he did. That might be cowardly in some people's eyes but he couldn't risk getting her killed.
"Then why is your heart beating so fast?" Katherine purred as she circled Elena.
"And how would you know that?" Elena shot back.
"I think you know."
"Know what?" A young human Stefan Salvatore asked.
"Nothing at all." Katherine replied walking out of the room. Elena went to follow suit but Stefan grabbed her wrist. "What's going on Elena? Did she hurt you? I saw the fear in your eyes."
"Stefan, it's nothing." Elena tried to pull away but it was hard trying to lie to him. She couldn't help but feel a pull when she looked into his forest green orbs. Stefan's eyes had a pleading look as he says "Please just tell me what's going on?" "I can't, I'm sorry."
"Did she hurt you?"
"Not physically.." Elena trails off.
"What did she do to you?" Stefan cups her face he's angry, no furious, no beyond furious something else. "I'm going to have a little chat with ."
"No you can't." Before Stefan could walk away she takes his arm.
"Why not?" Stefan asks.
"You just can't."
"Elena, what aren't you telling me?" Stefan walks closer and closer. But Elena backs away and then she's cornered by him and was backed by the wall. There was inches between the two. Stefan's eyes were pleading. "Lena, just tell me what's going on!" I can't" Elena's voice quivered. Something in him broke he hugged her tightly holding her close. "It's okay, you'll be okay." Tear streamed down her face as they embraced. It's like nothing changed. "Just promise me you won't talk to her. Please" Her eyes pleaded with desperation. "For now." He promised.
Katherine Pierce watched with hate and disgust from the doorway. 'My plan is not going the way I imagined it would. I'll have to do something about her, won't I?' As Katherine thought this, she walked back downstairs.
She yelled "Oh Damon, I need some help with something…"
