Previously from the Chronicles of the Eternal Sage: Far Horizons…
"But do beware, Lady Leviathan, I got him first."
"You may have, Lady Gremory, but I can take him from you."
From that day, a rivalry emerged, a friendly one, if they were honest with one another, all for the love of one man. But one thing is for certain, Leviathan was forever grateful to her progenitor, though she also knew the challenges that lay ahead, most significantly, her fellow Satans who would not take kindly any betrayal, especially from so close within.
The die is cast, and indeed, Leviathan had crossed her own Rubicon; her old anger was a tool to bury her love, and Naruto saw through it, but he said nothing; instead, he aimed to save her and, in doing so, altered her fate.
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do…"
The sun had yet to reach its zenith; it was midmorning, yet the small hill just outside of Jerusalem was filled with people; passers-by hurled insults towards a heavily bloodied and beaten man crucified on a cross, and on each side, two other men were crucified, yet undoubtedly not beaten nor injured as much as the man at the centre.
"Bah!" spat a man as he passed by, "thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days rebuild it; save thyself!"
Then another came and shouted, "If thou art the Son of God, come down from that cross!"
All these happened, and more as Naruto stood behind some of the women that cried in anguish; among them, a young man, the only one of the apostles who remained with the man's mother as she watched in sorrow, tears dried as she felt like swords pierce her sorrowful heart.
By Naruto's side was Gabriel, behind a disguise, and she was just as sorrowful as the other women, yet, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders ignored the wailing of the women as they looked at one another as Naruto opened an ear to what they said.
"He saved others," said one of the priests to the group, "but he can't save himself!"
"Indeed, if he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him," replied another, and this rendered disappointment and anger within Naruto.
"Is this how it should really be?" he muttered to himself, but the angel overheard him, and amidst her sorrow, she sighed heavily.
"The prophets of old were clear, Isaiah in particular," she replied; her voice was hoarse, and its sweetness was long gone.
Naruto remained silent after that, and his fists clenched as he heard insult after insult thrown at the crucified one, and he looked atop that cross, where there was an inscription written in three languages and set in a row. At the top, the inscription said in Hebrew ישוע הנצרי ומלך היהודים; in the middle, there was Greek, and it said Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; and at the bottom, there was Latin, which said IESVS NAZARENVS REX IUDÆORVM.
He pondered the epitaph, which said one thing, Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews. He had seen when the present governor, Pilatus, wrote that inscription, and he turned to Gabriel to speak, but what he saw halted any words that would have come out.
Without hesitation, he took her in his arms and held her there in silence as the day continued to pass, yet he felt timeless as he stood there and witnessed this moment before him.
"If you are the son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, why don't you save yourself? Climb down off that cross… prove to us that you are who you are!" exclaimed one of the criminals who were crucified with him, his voice croaked and laughed with malevolent scorn.
The other criminal, Dismas, rebuked Gesmas. "Do you not fear God, despite being under the same sentence of condemnation? We deserve this, Gesmas, but he does not!" he cried as he struggled through the pain and burst into tears of pain and guilt.
"I… I have sinned, and my punishment is just…" he said in a low, pain-filled voice as Jesus turned to him in dignified silence.
"You would be justified in condemning me," continued Dismas in agony as he hyperventilated with pain; his eyes met Jesus, who rested back His head, crowned with thorns. "I ask only that you remember me, Lord when you enter your kingdom."
"Amen, I tell you," began Jesus in a slow voice. "On this day, you shall be with me in Paradise."
Dismas' body shook with immeasurable joy, but he could not show it through the pain, whilst Gesmas roared with demonic laughter, and his malice seemed to have kept him alive.
Naruto watched in silent anger, but he held Gabriel and dared not do anything, as it seemed God in Heaven carried out vengeance in an instant, as a crow landed atop Gesmas' cross. He glared upwards, where the crow repeatedly attacked him with its beak and drew blood.
A Roman centurion pushed away the bird with his spear before he returned to his post.
Soon, the sixth hour came, yet, at this point, where the sun should clearly be shining down its light, only dimly sent its light through the clouds that gathered, and then, over the land, there was darkness, and the sun's light failed, as the clouds thickened and darkened.
Thunder rolled in the sky, yet there was no rain as some of the Romans cast lots and played games; then, the winds picked up, and discomfort fell upon the people; thus, many of them descended from the hill, among them, the chief priests and the rabbis and the people they brought with them.
Only a few remained, about a dozen or so, men and women, and among them, the mother of Jesus, accompanied by the one called the Magdalene, and a younger man, John, the only disciple who remained with his master. The three of them approached the foot of the cross, and His mother reached out to His feet.
"Flesh of my flesh… heart of my heart… my son, let me die with thee…" cried His mother as their gazes met, His eyes transfixed hers.
"Woman… behold thy son." His eyes turned towards John as He said those words, and John nodded, but Jesus continued with incredible difficulty. "John, behold… thy mother."
His mother broke into breathless sobs as John helped her away from the cross; Pilatus' officer helped the others away from the cross as the weather continued to sour, and then, a silence fell on the scene. Naruto and Gabriel remained where they were, and her tears continued in silence.
"See them?" Gesmas turned to Jesus and laughed. "They're running away… abandoning you. You are alone. There is no one left. No one, Jesus!"
A clap of thunder broke the silence as Jesus lifted His eyes to the darkness that enfolded the land. His eyes filled with tears that mingled with His blood that poured down His cheeks. Then, in the heavy silence, with a violent spasm of His tortured body, He cried in a clear, powerful voice in His Aramaic tongue. "Elahi… Elahi! … lema sebaqtani…"
His mother, Mary, heard His cry, and she spun around to look upon the cross, which now seemed to have stood out against the dark silver sky, and she slipped away from John's sustaining hands and returned to the foot.
Despite the language difference, the Hebrew speakers understood it well, but the Roman bystanders did not. "This man is calling Elijah," said a Roman soldier.
He tried to speak again, but his breathing made it difficult, and He tried again, but His lips were so perched that a moment passed before words formed. "I thirst."
Naruto and Gabriel watched as a nearby soldier poured some liquid into a sponge and approached the cross, but he was stopped by another officer, Pilatus' right-hand man, who spoke to him. "No, don't mix vinegar with gall. Give him only vinegar. It will give him some relief…"
This soldier then squeezed out the liquid, refilled the sponge with vinegar, and placed the sponge on a long reed, but before he could lift it up to Jesus, one of the earlier soldiers interrupted him. "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come down here or not."
But the soldier with the sponge ignored him and lifted it up to the mouth of Jesus, who drank from it. Then, John returned to Mary's side as Jesus looked down on them, tears mixed with blood rolled down to the ground, and as the mother and her son met each other's eyes, a transcendental understanding fell upon their expressions.
"It is finished." His voice had become soft, but they heard Him nonetheless; many questioned what that meant, but a few understood what it truly meant. Slowly, Jesus raised His head towards the silver-dark heavens, and there was a sound of a beating of a heart that entered Naruto's ears; it was slowing down.
"Father, into Thy hands… I commend… my spirit."
His head slowly lowered, and he exhaled for the last time. A great stillness pervaded the darkness that descended on the land, and there was a great silence. Naruto stood there, his eyes closed, and Gabriel vanished from his side.
Then the silence was broken, a sudden rush of the wind came upon them, and a storm brewed as thunder rolled heavily in the sky. The ground shook hard, the very rocks themselves cried out for the blood that had been spilt, and many nearly fell, then the earth continued to shake as Pilatus' right-hand man barked orders.
"Strike their knees! Make sure they're dead!"
Roman soldiers hurried, and they struck the knees of the two criminals on the left and right side of Jesus, all while the ground shook; then one of the soldiers went for Jesus, and it seemed the ground shook harder as this soldier was forced on the ground and lost his footing.
"Festina!" shouted Pilatus' right-hand man.
"Abenader! Mortus est!" replied the centurion from earlier, and Pilatus' right-hand man, Abenader, sighed.
He gave his fellow centurion a long look before he replied. "Face certum, Cassius."
Cassius Longinus stood there and gripped his spear; with a grimace, he turned around and looked apologetically towards Mary and John before he stood and faced the dead body of Jesus, and in one strike on the side of Jesus' body, a fount of blood and water rained down on his face and healed his blindness on one eye.
With a shocked and bewildered look, he fell on his knees and muttered to himself, his spear abandoned in the ground. "Truly, this man was the son of God…"
Abenader took off his helm in shock as he stared at the crucified Jesus.
Unbeknownst to them, the chief priests and the rabbis were in the Temple, and there, they witnessed how the ground shook and tore apart in two the great curtain that separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the place. And as this occurred, things in the Underworld were far more chaotic.
A great light descended in the form of a great meteor pierced the earth; it was Christ's heavenly soul, accompanied by Gabriel and many others; together, they descended into the Underworld in full force on the weight and payment of the Crucifixion.
They pierced Limbo's thick, foggy veil, and He appeared radiant with light and was surrounded by angels as they came through the divisions of Limbo, one of the patriarchs, the other of those after the patriarchs. These souls did not recognise Him at first but were nevertheless filled with sensations of hope and joy.
No stone, no soul, was left unturned as they came through, and His passage was like wafting a breath of fresh air but swift as a whirlwind. After the two divisions were passed through, He reached a dark spot where two figures stood, Adam and Eve.
The two prostrated before Him, but they soon joined Him as they went deeper, and soon, their triumphant procession reached Purgatory, filled with those righteous souls, good pagans who had a glimmer of the truth but longed for its fulfilment.
Some demons were there, and in pain, they were bound in chains and dragged away by the angels towards their final destination.
The expression of His countenance was most severe as they beheld a great abyss, and before it, the exterior of Hell, that is, of Gehenna. It was an immense gate, and the black granite from which it was formed gave off a metallic brightness and those dark and ponderous doors lay before them; secured with bolts, no one could behold them.
Though the doors were shut tight, deep groans and cries of despair could be heard clearly. The dreadful yells and shrieks of the damned entered their hearing, and then, there was a great burst of power, as the bolts that fastened the door were unfastened as the doors flung open by the angels.
Explosions of oaths, curses, cries of despair and frightful exclamations received them. As the armies of demons arrived, the mere presence of Jesus compelled each and every single of them into obedience.
Eternal and frightful torments were much preferable to these than to receive such humiliation, but alas, none could withstand the power of God as they were all chained and bound and thrown back into the abyss, where thick clouds arose from its depths, and there, the Satans were thrown down, until such time they could let loose and make their war against Heaven and Earth.
After this, the innumerable bands of souls were liberated from Purgatory and Limbo followed Him as they were brought into paradise; with Him was Dismas, and as He promised, on that same day, they reached Paradise.
Naruto's eyes opened back to the scene before him; his eyes looked back to the deceased body of Jesus as it was brought down from the cross, carefully and slowly, he watched for a brief moment as the body was laid down on the lap of Mary, who silently looked down on the body of her son.
He bowed and left them towards destinations unknown.
That night, he stood inside Pilate's court, and the Prefect stood by a balcony with a grim look on his face.
"A dreadful day, isn't it," said Naruto, and the man turned towards him in surprise.
"Senator Naruto," greeted Pilate, surprised but unenthusiastic; clearly, the day's events remained deep in his mind.
"Quid est veritas? Do you know why He did not answer that question?" Pilate was not surprised at the knowledge of the senator before him; despite the active removal of his records and deeds, the Roman elite knew that Naruto was something else.
"Why?" Pilate asked in a quiet voice, a wine cup in his hands.
"Est vir qui adest," replied Naruto, and he highlighted each syllable that he used as Pilate's eyes widened briefly.
"The man in front of you…" muttered Pilate as he contemplated those words for a few moments in that serene silence of the night; gradually, he came to a realisation. "… the truth… is the man in front of you… oh."
"Correct, the answer Himself stood before you in the prætorium… but, there is nothing you could for now until at least the Sanhedrin comes knocking again, but at more pressing issues for you, we both know Tiberius will be here." Naruto's statement sent Pilate into an exasperated state of emotion.
Indeed, the next day came, Naruto was in Pilate's court, and in the morning, the chief priests and rabbis that brought Jesus to Pilate were there.
"There's your solution, burn the body in public," said Pilate to Caiaphas, who reacted negatively, but respectfully as Naruto rolled his eyes while in his seat.
"God forbids cremation," said the High Priest as he approached Pilate on his desk.
"God also forbids labour on the Sabbath, yet, here you are," countered the Prefect sarcastically as Naruto listened in amusement; it was clear that in Pilate's eleven years in Judea, the man had no love for the Temple sect.
"His business is unfinished," returned Caiaphas while Pilate rubbed the sides of his head.
"The man's dead, Caiaphas; his followers are in hiding, and he's no longer a threat to your monopoly on piety," spat Pilate as he made his displeasure known to everyone.
The man clamped for a brief moment before he continued. "But still a threat, Prefect… while alive, that deceiver said he would rise again after three days; he foretold it. The sepulchre was sealed so that his disciples don't come to steal the body and say he had risen from death."
Naruto watched as Caiaphas sat beside him in his chair before Pilate, but he was ignored. "That may cause more unrest than all his blasphemies combined," said Caiaphas as he turned to Naruto, who chuckled.
"You have your guards, the ones that arrested Him that night at Gethsemane, secure Himself," said Naruto, while Pilate nodded.
"My words exactly."
"To which I reply…" Caiaphas paused for a moment as to choose his words carefully. "We need a Roman seal; this must be seen as an impartial will of the Prefect."
"And not yours?" questioned Pilate with raised eyebrows as the High Priest turned towards Naruto.
"We seek only what Cæsar seeks," he said before he turned his eyes towards something else. "Peace in Jerusalem, peace in Judea… which you will lose if this body vanishes."
Naruto raised an eyebrow at the shrewdness of this Jewish High Priest, to which he turned towards Pilate and shook his head. "Abenader, see to what they want."
Pilate's right-hand man sighed as he shook his head, but soon enough, the centurion called some of his men, and they left with the High Priest and his group, and once they were out of sight, Naruto turned back to Pilate, the man was tired and had enough of it.
"What on earth have I gotten myself into," muttered the Prefect while Naruto chuckled.
"Whatever God planned you to be into," he replied with mirth in his eyes, while the Prefect sighed before he turned his eyes on him.
"What do you know of this Nazarene, Jesus?" questioned Pilate; his eyes showed his tiredness; hence, Naruto dispensed with the flowery language and allegories and secrets.
"He is who He said He is… and as you have written, King of the Jews, but…" paused Naruto as Pilate watched him look up to the sky. "It will be long after you're gone that it will truly mean something. His followers will suffer from many hands, Rome especially, but with faith, they will endure."
A new sun rose upon Judea on the third day as Naruto stooped atop the Mount of Olives, a spear in one hand, the same spear that pierced the side of Jesus, and on his other hand, the crown of thorns and three nails. For a while, he remained in silence, alone and in contemplation.
"A denarius for your thoughts?" said a voice behind him, and he turned to find Gabriel with an indescribable joy on her face; her beauty radiated and took him by surprise.
The two shared a moment of silence until they broke out laughing together as he emptied his hands and took her in his arms; they lost themselves in that embrace and, time again stilled between them. In silence, they found one another, both in joy and one might say, love.
Soon, the two broke their embrace, and their eyes met. "It is done?" asked Naruto.
"It is done," confirmed Gabriel with a smile; then, she returned to his arms, and he tightened them around her. They remained together as the soft winds of the Judean countryside came upon them; the sun's light peered down on them as if the heavens itself watched them.
Once again, after a while, they broke their embrace, and Naruto leaned down and touched his forehead upon Gabriel as they hummed a tune together; then, she slowly reached up her hands to his face, her soft fingers brushed gently on his skin, and she leaned forward, and pressed her lips to his.
It was a soft kiss filled with unbridled joy as emotions swelled within her; he relaxed, and his arms found their way around her waist. For a few moments, they were lost in each other, away from the woes of the world; soon, however, they pulled away, and both wore a smile on their faces.
"I love you."
