Hugo Firewall, 14
District 3 Male
I leaned over my sketches, eyelids drooping. I'd been up most of the night designing a new bot, and while it was looking great, I was not. Perry was coming over soon though, and I was excited to set something up. Bruce, an upperclassman who recently transferred to our school, was being a jerk, and it was time for payback.
I was diagnosed with autism when I was 7, and I'd been treated differently ever since. In a district where intelligence was valued over everything else, my different learning style and lack of interest in school were unwelcome. And that invited the bullies in.
Perry and I met in Mrs. Patrick's science class when we were 10, and we'd been inseparable since. Mrs. Patrick paired us for a project, and we just clicked. Our brains worked so similarly. It was refreshing to be around someone like me, and I was forever grateful to Mrs. Patrick for connecting us.
My mom knocked on my door, calling out to me.
"Hugo! Perry is here. And lunch is ready."
"Coming!" I called back.
I shrugged on an old jacket and went into the kitchen, which Perry was just entering. We lived in a small apartment above Firewall's Fabulous Toy Store, my parents' pride and joy. They shared my love for inventing, though their creations were toys, not bots and drones.
My mom set down two plates of pasta as I excitedly gestured for Perry to sit down.
"I've been working on the Bolt-Bot for most of the morning," I told him. "We just need the new treads and we're ready for a test run!"
"No eggs this time?" Mom asked. I shook my head.
"Dad said they were too expensive." Mom nodded.
"Unfortunately, he's right. Well, have fun, and don't get caught!"
Most parents would be appalled to learn their kid was out harassing other people with drones. But my parents were just as mischievous and chaotic, if not more so. And they'd always taught me to stand up for myself.
After we ate, Perry and I retreated to my room to put the new treads on the bot. Mr. Brunson, our inventions teacher, usually had a supply of old materials he'd let students purchase for a reduced fee. Perry and I had been saving our allowance for these treads for a while. And to our delight, they fit perfectly.
"This is going to be great," Perry said excitedly. I nodded, still adjusting a few things. It had to be perfect. And this design was especially important to me because we were going to present it to the next Capitol scout to come to the district.
I'd always had a fascination with weaponry, so when Mr. Brunson introduced the idea of Capitol employment to me, I jumped at the potential opportunity. There were already a few improvements I'd drafted up for their guns, and while the electric bolts in the Bolt-Bot were technically harmless, they had the potential to be much more debilitating.. Someday, Perry and I would be more successful than all the bullies combined. And that would be the sweetest revenge.

District 3 Female
I wrapped my blanket tighter around myself, biting my lower lip and trying to keep my tears at bay. When I was sad, I'd watch Lana's favorite movie. It was a mermaid love story set in District 4. My mom always asked why I watched it, since it made me sad, and she had a good point, but it made me feel connected to Lana. I missed her so much, even after two years. We had been soulmates. I was sure of it.
I wiped away my tears with the corner of the blanket and tried to focus. Today, I was watching the movie with a purpose. I'd been hired recently to work on a Capitol movie-rating website, and if I did a good job, I could expect to see many more Capitol employment opportunities.
It was exciting, in a way, but also depressing. I didn't want to work for the people who killed Lana, but my family needed the money. We'd recently moved to a bigger apartment and were low on funds. My brother Ryan and I even needed to take out tesserae, but we had to move. Our old building was being demolished to make room for a new factory.
Grabbing my ePad, I jotted down a few notes about the movie's subplot. While I did love to code, movies were my biggest passion. I would love to be a movie critic someday, and website-building and coding could be my way into a Capitol citizenship. District 3 had the highest rates of Capitol citizenship, but also the strictest policies and requirements. Which I understood, but didn't necessarily like. Still, I was a straight-A student near the top of the class, so I couldn't complain.
Still holding my ePad, I scrolled through my past notes on other movies. One was on an action film about a victor who got superpowers, while another was a documentary on the extended Snow family. I was still editing my review for that one, since I had to be tactful and couldn't include my usual jokes.
I nearly had this movie memorized, so I paused it and wrote down my thoughts on the ending before flopping back on my bed. I felt less emotional about Lana now, but a new worry was beginning to plague me. Tomorrow was reaping day, and anything could happen. Lana had proved that.
If anyone had suffered more than me from losing Lana, it was Amelia. I still visited her, at least twice a month, since we'd gotten much closer since Lana was reaped. She had a boyfriend now, and was doing okay in her career, but losing a sibling was a life-changing event.
I'd briefly gone to therapy after Lana's death, as did Amelia. But it was expensive, and the therapists in District 3 weren't the best. I figured I was better off healing on my own. And I was. Healing, that is. I would miss Lana forever, but I would be okay.

District 3 Victor of the 8th Hunger Games
I was worried about Wiress. Reaping day always affected her more than it did Beetee and I. After losing her cousin Gamma in the 52nd Games, Wiress had spiraled. She barely spoke to her family now, despite them trying to visit often. At this rate, they are closer with Beetee, who often invited them over after Wiress sent them home.
She seemed alright today though. Her hands had their usual tremor, but she smiled when she, Beetee, and I took the stage alongside Caligula Windham, District 3's escort. By some miracle, the man didn't look ridiculous. His dark skin paired well with his lime-green suit, but the black bowler hat was a bit odd. Especially perched on top of his dreads.
"Welcome citizens of District 3!" he cheered. "I am so excited to be here once again. We've been in the finale two years in a row. Let's bring home a victor!" The crowd cheered at that and I clapped too, as we were supposed to do. Beetee was muttering something to Wiress; something I couldn't make out.
"Now, before we get to see who our representatives are, we have a wonderful film brought to you all the way from the Capitol!" Caligula pressed a button and the screen above him blazed to life. My gut clenched as I listened to the narration. It was awful. I was relieved when it finished, as I was every year. I believed they even had footage from my Games in the film, which was why I made a point never to look.
"How lovely," Caligula said when it was over. "And now we can choose our tributes! Let's begin with the ladies." He walked over to one of the large glass bowls and reached in. His sharp black nails closed around a slip and he plucked it out.
"Evelyne Hope!"
Someone in the adult's section screamed, but no one moved. Peacekeepers began to move forward as a girl stumbled out of the 18-year-old's section. My eyes widened. She was the girlfriend of Lana Rose, my mentee who placed second in the 56th Games. Now I would be mentoring Evelyne.
Her black hair, which had been neatly braided, had partially escaped its tie and was hanging in her face. She was breathing hard, green eyes wild with fear. And she shook violently as a Peacekeeper led her onto the stage.
Caligula forged on, ignoring Evelyne's fear. He promptly chose a slip from the boy's bowl and read it.
"Hugo Firewall!"
There were a few gasps and murmurs from the crowd as a skinny 14-year-old with neat brown hair and round glasses stepped out of the crowd. His expression was neutral, but I could tell there was anger there in his clenched fists and tight jaw. But he came to stand beside Evelyne and Caligula with no fuss.
Still trembling, Evelyne held out a hand, and Hugo shook it as Caligula announced their names.
"Panem, I give you your District 3 tributes: Evelyne Hope and Hugo Firewall!"
Hey everyone! Here are the District 3 intros! Thank you to Very New To This for Hugo and Kittygirl235 for Evelyne. They're both awesome characters. Let me know which tribute was your favorite, and who's been your favorite overall. First impressions too! Please leave a review. They make me really happy :)
Have a nice day, be kind to each other, and never stop reading!
