Part 1

Plot: When on Daiyu to rescue Leia, Obi-Wan runs into a Sith hound, who seems strangely familiar. Which makes no sense because he's never seen one before. At first, he thinks the dog belongs to the Inquisitors, but now, it's determined to follow him and Leia around everywhere. He's beginning to think this may not be just a Tuk'ata.

Something's not right. Obi-Wan can't say what it is, but he's been sensing this darkness from the moment he first arrived on Daiyu to search for Leia. Likely, there's Inquisitors here, but something about this feels more familiar, like he's sensed it before, even if he's not sure when, but he hasn't truly touched the Force in so long that he might well be imagining it.

Except, when he's stepping out of Leia's cell along with her, trying to ignore his now aching side – thank you, Leia. Not. It was impressive, though. That moment reminded him so much of Anakin's fire, how he'd always try to escape on his own if he was ever captured, even when young – that he feels the dark sensation moving closer.

More importantly, he can hear it. Something large is pattering down the hall, only right around the bend, and it doesn't sound remotely human.

"Stay back," Obi-Wan warns, pushing Leia behind him.

"Why –"

She never has the chance to finish her question, before an enormous dog steps around the corner.

It stands at probably over three feet high, and its eyes zero in on them instantly. Unnaturally red eyes.

The hallway is dark, making it hard to see, but Obi-Wan can mostly make out the rest of it. Its fur is a sandy blond, but the tips of its fur are all blackened as though burned, making the dog itself look almost black.

Spikes run along the length of its back, all the way to the end of its very long tail.

What's even stranger are its legs. The front ones starting about halfway down are entirely black and furless, with a bright red band circling right where the fur ends, and fainter red lines running across the blackened area below, even along its paws. The same markings start even higher on its back legs.

Something about it is oddly unnerving, or maybe it's that the markings don't look like fur, or even skin, but something else entirely.

And why does the dog feel so familiar, as though he's seen it before, but he can't place where? It doesn't make sense because he definitely never has.

By taking even one look at it, Obi-Wan is almost certain that this is a Sith hound. They haven't even been seen since the war between the Jedi and Sith, when the Sith were thought to be destroyed.

"What's that?" Leia squeaks, suddenly nervous.

The dog is just standing there, watching them, red eyes glittering intently. Obi-Wan doesn't like it. Is it with the Inquisitors? These things are still around? He shouldn't really be surprised, but it's unexpected.

Something about its eyes look almost too intelligent, and that's doing little to take the edge of his wariness.

"I don't know." Obi-Wan's already drawing his blaster when the dog pounces. It's suddenly flying at him, faster than he can dodge out of the way. It slams into him, tackling him to the ground, a sudden anger burning in its eyes – dogs can look like that? – snarling as it tries to keep him from shoving it off.

He hears Leia yelp in panic, but there's nothing he can do now, short of trying not to get bitten.

The dog snarls, barring its very long, sharp teeth which are already snapping dangerously close to his head. It ducks down – this thing's strength is ridiculous – sinking its teeth into his shoulder.

Obi-Wan lets out a most undignified yelp, struggling to shove the thing off. Finally, he manages to get a grip on his blaster, hitting the dog in the side with it, then trying to fire, though the shot misses completely.

It seems to make something shift in the dog's expression, though, because it pulls back, stepping away from him. The sight of the blood – his – on its jaws is... disturbing, and the sharp, stabbing pain in his shoulder is an obvious enough indication of how deep that was.

It's just staring at him again, and Obi-Wan doesn't waste another moment in pulling Leia away, down the hall the other direction, before the creature pounces again.

He's relatively certain it will if he tries shooting it again.

**w**

Obi-Wan is so totally done with this mission, as he chases Leia through the streets. They do not have time to deal with this right now, and for all her intuitiveness, he wishes she could at least see that.

He skids around another corner in the alley, to a spot between two buildings, coming to an abrupt halt at the sight of that dog standing right in front of Leia. She looks unbothered and unharmed – if anything, she seems intrigued by it.

This... is bad.

He draws his blaster instantly, aiming at it. "Step away from it, Leia," he warns. It could be about to hurt her, and – He'd never be able to stop it fast enough. She's small enough that the Tuk'ata could easily kill her in one bite, if it wanted to.

"No!" she yells, defiantly.

Now is not the time for her stubbornness. (For an aching moment, it makes him think of... another time, though Anakin would never have done something this rash.)

The dog barks, wagging its tail.

It doesn't look anything like the crazed-for-blood canine it did when it attacked him, but he doesn't trust that at all. Obi-Wan takes a step forwards, calculating if there's a way that he can shoot it without hitting Leia.

But then she bolts again, running for a nearby ladder and scrambling up the side of the building. "Leia!" he yells, but she ignores him.

The dog takes off down the alley; he doesn't know or care where it's going so long as it's not tracking them and runs for the ladder himself.

Which... only goes from bad to worse, because there's bounty hunters up there after her, and then she tries to jump off the roof to get away from him – seriously, he's just trying to help her – and he has to desperately reach into the Force for the first time in years to save her. It... was hard. He hasn't done that in so long, and once whenever he did, he'd think of Anakin's brilliant light. He doesn't really remember how he drew on the Force before he met Anakin, anymore. And it's so hard to think about him, even if he can never really stop.

Obi-Wan circles down the side of the building a different way – in the past he would've Force-jumped but that's from long ago – running to the alley where she's now sitting.

And the dog is right next to her again.

"Wait!" she objects, when he moves for his blaster again. "It's not here to hurt us." She reaches up, patting its snout as she stands. The dog nuzzles closer.

Obi-Wan doesn't trust that at all. "You don't know what it is, Leia."

"It's a dog," she replies, cheerfully, "I think it was just hungry." She's rather unshaken for nearly dying.

"It's a Tuk'ata. The Inquisitors' hunting dog, I believe. It's probably been tracking us."

She frowns, patting its nose again, gaze locking with its far too intelligent red eyes.

The Tuka'ata's gaze flicks past to her him for a moment, and the sheer intensity of that look is almost unnerving, when it's coming from an animal. After a moment it steps away from Leia, trotting closer to Obi-Wan instead, crouching on the ground, wagging its tail again.

... What is it doing?

"I think he wants you to like him," Leia explains, importantly.

This cannot be happening. She better not have adopted a dog when it's one of the very things Obi-Wan needs to be keeping her safe from. This is not working. "... Given how we met, I find that difficult to believe."

The dog whines, tucking its tail between its legs. It looks at him almost pleadingly.

Apparently, it's disturbingly aware of its surroundings. To be fair, he... doesn't actually know how sentient, or not, Tuk'atas are.

"Don't be mean. It's trying to apologize," she practically pouts, darting over and stroking its head.

"How would you know that?" he asks, dubiously.

"I can tell. You're a Jedi. Shouldn't you know that, too?"

"As a Jedi, I know that it's dangerous."

The dog barks in protest.

Obi-Wan crosses his arms, unmoved. That his shoulder is still sore from the incident – he put bacta on it, but it'll take time to heal – isn't improving his mood.

Leia keeps stroking its head, and it nuzzles into her side, even if it never looks away from Obi-Wan. "It'll protect us from the Inquisiting people," she insists, "It wants to come with us."

"It will attract way too much attention," Obi-Wan replies, flatly. He does not have time to deal with this. And there's something about that dog... He doesn't like it. It's too familiar.

The dog stands, perking up and barking, before it turns and trots away.

"Where are you going?" Leia calls, running after.

It turns, rubbing its snout against her shoulder, barking again. "You're... taking the long way? Okay!" She turns around, beaming up at Obi-Wan, "Come on, let's go!"

... He has a bad feeling about this.

**w**

They've barely made it to the docking port at the edge of the city when the Tuk'ata trots in again. How it even knew to come here, Obi-Wan doesn't know, or much like.

"Yes!" Leia exclaims eagerly, running over to the dog. It licks her face, and she giggles, turning away to smear the saliva off on her sleeve.

Something in the air is changing, filling Obi-Wan with a sense of urgency. They need to hurry. Something's –

The dog bristles suddenly, growling lowly in warning.

Obi-Wan senses and hears it the same moment. An Inquisitor's coming. Did the Tuk'ata bring them here? There's no way an animal could be intelligent enough to act, though, and it seems upset.

"Leia, go to the ship. Start it up if I don't come. I'll be right behind you," he tells her.

She wavers a moment before bolting, and Obi-Wan gestures for the dog to follow her. It hesitates, sniffing the air before retreating from sight.

"I know you're there, Obi-Wan," the Inquisitor calls. She's moving closer, and he ducks behind the crates, pulling out his lightsaber, in case he needs it. It's been so long since he last fought with it. The last time he did was –

He sharply cuts off that line of thought there.

"You can't escape. But don't worry. You won't die. Not today. I imagine Vader will enjoy finishing you off, after your capture." Her voice is tinged with obvious dark amusement.

Obi-Wan stills completely, breath freezing in his throat.

Vader.

What?!

He's – but –

"You didn't know," she states more than asks, still amused, "He's alive, Obi-Wan. Anakin Skywalker is alive."

What?!

How –

But Anakin died there, didn't he? He must have. Obi-Wan heard it when the screams stopped, when – Everything felt cold, and he couldn't bring himself to reach the Force anymore, and –

The clatter of a thrown crate jolts him back to the present, spurring him into motion again. He needs to get out of here, and then figure out if this is even true.

Obi-Wan hears a sudden bark, and a nearby pile of crates goes flying, into the one next to them. Several piles are tipping over now, and the Inquisitor lets out a most undignified yelp, trying to block them.

The dog bounces around the corner, almost eagerly wagging its tail.

Well. Maybe it's actually not the Inquisitor's dog. Or it doesn't like them, despite its training. Maybe.

Obi-Wan still doesn't trust its intentions but he runs for the ship, and lets it get on board when it tries to follow.

The moment the rush of adrenaline starts to wear off, he pauses, reaching for his long-buried bond with Anakin. He thought it broke, but he'd closed himself off from the Force before he could feel it, to block out the pain, to –

And... the bond is still there. It's darkened, twisted into something strangely murky that he doesn't really understand but... It's still there. "Anakin," Obi-Wan breaths, shakily.

The Tuk'ata barks, looking up at him happily, wagging its tail.

What does it want?

"Ben?" Leia asks, frowning.

Right. He... needs to focus. "We need to get out of here," he says shortly, moving for them to get away from the door.

**w**

Now would be a good time for Qui-Gon to answer him. But when he tries reaching into the Force again, mostly in an effort to calm himself, Obi-Wan still feels no one. Somehow, Anakin is alive, and he has no idea what to think of that.

But the first thing that hits him is... admittedly, fear. He's going to be furious, won't he? He... already tried to kill him on Mustafar.

"I see through the lies of the Jedi."

"If you're not with me, then you're my enemy."

And now, he can't say Anakin's likely even greater anger wouldn't be justified.

"Vader will be happy to finish you off."

Of that, he has no doubt.

Obi-Wan jumps when something wettish and cold slobbers across his face. He opens his eyes to see the dog's tongue one inch from his eye.

He jolts back instinctively, shoving the Tuk'ata back, maybe a little harder than he meant to, scooting away. Seriously, he was trying to meditate. He had no desire to get interrupted.

The dog's tail droops, and it looks distinctly disappointed. There's an almost heavy sad look in its eyes – however dogs can look like that – when it looks at him.

"What are you doing out here?" Obi-Wan asks, grumpily.

The dog barks. He can't tell what that's supposed to mean.

But now that it's literally standing right in front of him is the first time, he notices several things he didn't before. First off, its fur definitely isn't burned, for as much as it looks like it. All the edges are merely darkened, in a way that looks almost unnatural.

And it also has a collar around its neck – he noticed that before, but not the intricacies. The device is mechanical, and there's a hole that's probably meant for a leash, but he doesn't see any way to take the collar off. It obviously is snapped right onto its neck, and there's a joint but no key or anything that indicates how it opens. And... he probably needs to get the collar off because it might have a tracker.

Wiping his face off, Obi-Wan scoots closer, reaching up to touch the collar.

The dog goes completely still, hardly even twitching. It's practically cowering, even if it's not pulling away.

... What's wrong with it now? It didn't have a problem practically jumping him in what seemed to be affection – for some reason – seconds ago.

He doesn't see any way to get it off, though, so he finally pulls away, standing and going to collect Lola, which Leia left in here when she went to rest. He... could fix it for her. Mostly, he's thinking about how Anakin always used to tinker with these things to the point Obi-Wan occasionally helped him. Mostly just to get the mess off the floor, but...

The dog settles on the floor a short distance away, just watching him.

Obi-Wan can't help glancing at it, just... wondering. Why does it seem so familiar? Why is it even here?

Maybe Leia was right that it's simply hungry. Its ribs aren't overly obvious, but in the right lighting, he can still clearly see them. It... has obviously not been well cared for.

There's little use risking that it gets ravenous enough again to consider attacking them, so after a moment of consideration, he takes out some of the little food he bought on Daiyu in case the trip got long, tossing it on the floor in front of the dog.

The Tuk'ata sniffs the food, gaze darting almost nervously between him and it, as though unsure if it should trust the gesture before it edges forwards, gobbling it down, licking the floor clean beneath it.

Well.

That... was apparently a legitimate a concern, after all. He'd give it more, but they only have so much, and he doesn't know if they'll have any on Mapuzo. He still doesn't know if Haja sent them into a trap or not.

**w**

When they finally get to Mapuzo, the dog seems very uninterested in their attempts at figuring out who they were waiting for or where they were going in the first place, and finally goes in chase of a rabbit-like creature. Obi-Wan ignores it entirely, trying to find a way out of the predicament, until it returns with the dead creature in its mouth and drops it at his feet, looking up hopefully.

"What are you doing?" Obi-Wan asks, dubiously.

"Uhh... we don't eat that," Leia assures, patting the dog's head.

It licks her, only to leave a trail of blood all over her hand. She yelps in disgust, smearing it off.

The dog looks between her and back to Obi-Wan though, still hesitant.

He has no idea why it seems to have decided they're its new owners.

"Go ahead," he replies, dismissively, and it practically dives for the rabbit, munching it down, ignoring everything until a transport shows up and Leia runs to get its attention.

Which leads to them getting into an Imperial transport, and... This is not going well at all.

The Tuk'ata squishes in opposite them on the other side, sniffing at the Imperial marking a little suspiciously.

"You should pet him," Leia says.

"What?"

"Pet him," she repeats, shrugging, "It's nice. He likes it."

"You do that sufficiently," he points out, flatly.

"But it likes you too."

Does it?

He glances back at the dog, who seems to have made himself perfectly at home.

Fine.

He'll do it just to humor her.

Obi-Wan reaches out, almost uncertainly running a hand across the dog's head. It goes entirely still again for a few moments, as he awkwardly keeps petting it, but then the Tuk'ata starts wagging its tail, snuggling closer until it's practically pressed against his legs, in what he assumes is... asking for more.

... Fiiiiine.

**w**

The transport goes mostly okay until they reach a checkpoint, and the stormtroopers scan his face with a droid. Of course, they realize who he is, and he shoots them down, except one of them grabs Leia, aiming a blaster at her head.

The Tuk'ata snarls and lunges. The stormtrooper tries to fire but misses entirely as it knocks him to the ground, leaving him unconscious.

But then, another transport shows up, an entire group of stormtroopers swarming off. The dog bares its fangs, starting forwards.

"Wait," Obi-Wan warns, before it can pounce.

It stills, tail drooping, but does as it's told. He's certain it probably would've been shot if it hadn't stopped.

And then, the person supposed to meet them – Tala – arrives after all, taking them into town to a hideout. Security is tightened with word of him being on the planet, though.

Leia presses against the wall of a nearby building where they're hiding, clutching Lula tighter. She looks close to tears – likely, the reality and danger are finally catching up with her, and she's never been in situations like this before.

The Tuk'ata nuzzles closer, licking her face seemingly in comfort. She throws her arms around it, burying her face in its neck, sniffling.

For some reason, it's especially reminding him of his first mission with Anakin. He'd been captured, held in almost the exact same position Leia was, though he'd broken free himself. And he'd been scared because he thought he'd failed.

"We'll be alright, Leia," Obi-Wan promises, crouching in front of her, "You'll be home soon."

She pulls back from the dog, to look up at him. "I didn't do it on purpose," she says, biting her lip, "I didn't mean to run away. I used to do it all the time, it's just –"

"It's not your fault, Leia," Obi-Wan assures, touching her shoulder. She was never trained for any of this. She's too young to really understand the seriousness, even though if she hadn't taken off for that transport, they might not be in a mess this serious.

The Tuk'ata whines, looking at Obi-Wan almost sullenly.

As usual, he can't decipher what it's trying to say.

**w**

Obi-Wan's mildly surprised they're able to get off Mapuzo to Jabi'im without further issue, but then, the Empire shows up before they can take off. How did they even track them? Are they using the Tuk'ata's collar to track them?!

Everyone is panicking now. The dog paces nervously, staying near Leia. At least it does until Leia offers to go up to a small enclosure above to override the controls so they can get out of the base they're hiding in. He's impressed she knows how to do that. (But she's Anakin's daughter. Of course, she would.)

And then, Obi-Wan sends everyone off to barricade all other exits. It's been a long time since he's taken control of things like this, and it's reminding him painfully of the war. Of when things were different.

The dog lingers near him, and he finds himself idly resting a hand on its head for a few moments, as he listens to the message from Bail.

It's unlikely the Inquisitors could figure out who Luke and Leia are, but Vader... He doesn't even know where Vader is, but Obi-Wan's surprised he hasn't shown up in person already if this is so important to him. And really, how couldn't it be?

Obi-Wan doesn't much want to think about what their inevitable confrontation will be like.

The Tuk'ata whines, rubbing against his leg, whether in comfort – how does it know what he's feeling? – or because it's scared, he's not sure.

He can't entirely understand the strange traces of fondness he's beginning to feel for the creature, either. It's a Sith hound. He still can't trust it, given how it's probably been trained, and yet –

Someone runs into the room then, saying that they don't know how much longer the barricade at the back of the facility is going to hold.

And Leia needs more time. Everyone does.

"Tell the Inquisitor I want to negotiate," Obi-Wan decides, and the dog trots after him as he approaches the barricade, standing right up against it to hear her through the wall.

"If this is you stalling for time, it won't work," Reva calls, "You're still going to die. And Vader will be all too eager to do it."

The Tuk'ata steps away from the door, backing off a few steps.

He doesn't pay it any mind now, his mind freezing entirely at the mention of that name again. Is Anakin really alive? No, there's no question of that but at the same time, then why isn't he here? "You mean Anakin," Obi-Wan replies, quietly. It's nearly physically painful to say the name. "You knew who Vader was. Back on Daiyu, how did you know that? Vader would've kept that hidden –"

Reva laughs, actually laughs. "I don't believe you know what Vader's become. It's not something he could keep hidden."

After what he saw at the Temple, he doesn't want to think about what Vader might've been doing all these years. How could Anakin – "I saw what he did at the Temple. I'm well aware of what he's capable of."

"Then where were you?" she hisses back, but there's the slightest tremor in her voice, "When he was killing my friends? Why didn't you stop him? Why didn't you save us?"

Obi-Wan breaths in and out heavily, trying to gather some semblance of control over his emotions, just... remembering that day. And she's right that it was his duty, and he apparently failed that. (He can't even say how relieved he is that he didn't, and that's... probably not how he ought to feel.)

But what she's saying is making him realize that maybe... "You're not serving him, are you? You're hunting him." Out of the corner of his eye, he sees the Tuk'ata back away a few more steps, tail curling between its legs. "We want the same thing."

"Do we?" Reva snaps back, "Do we, Obi-Wan? Do you really want Anakin dead?"

Does he?

He can't answer that. He can't admit to his failing at being the Jedi Master everyone saw he was, especially after what he was just reminded of and admit no – he doesn't want Anakin dead. But it's true. He – he doesn't. Not truly.

"And if you do, why have you been taking him with you all this time? Do you really not know?"

...

...

"What are you talking about?" Obi-Wan demands, a sudden sinking realization dawning on him, as ridiculously outlandish as it is.

"That stupid dog," Reva scoffs, "Could you really not tell? He is Vader now."

What?!

Slowly, Obi-Wan turns to look at the Tuk'ata. It's backed halfway across the room, tail between its legs, watching him warily.

"If you truly want the same thing, then finish him. But I won't wait for you," she calls, through the door.

And that – How –

And it makes more sense than he cares to believe, as he lightly probes his bond with Anakin. It's twisted and murky so much like the Tuk'ata, but it didn't even register before with how outlandish it was.

"Is that true?" Obi-Wan demands, though it comes out fainter than he intended.

The dog doesn't answer.

Was this intentional? Did Anakin lead the Inquisitors here? And how is he even a dog in the first place? Is he still as sentient as before or – This doesn't make any sense.

Obi-Wan takes an uncertain step towards it.

The Tuk'ata – Anakin – snarls at him, bearing all its fangs. (Wait, is that why it bit him? Is Reva right that he's eagerly waiting to finish off Obi-Wan? Then why hasn't he done it yet? What's he waiting for?)

"Anakin –" He doesn't know what he's trying to say. He doesn't even know what to do.

It spins around and bolts.

He's scared; Obi-Wan doesn't have to know much about dogs to be able to read that.

And he... has no idea what to think of that. He'd been focused on what Vader would probably do to him because of Mustafar. He never thought about how Anakin might react, beyond anger. Doesn't know why, now. He's the one who – who was left permanently injured there, regardless of how he's somehow still alive.

Obi-Wan... needs to approach this differently somehow, and he doesn't know how, but he has to know if Anakin is on their side or what, as unthinkable as that might be.

"There's still good in him."

He just – doesn't know what to believe, to think that everything he did on Mustafar might've been entirely senseless. (Even if it wasn't, that doesn't mean – He wishes he could stop remembering every moment of it. Is that... does that have anything to do with the dog's strange legs and fur? How is Anakin even a Tuk'ata in the first place?!)

Obi-Wan makes his way through the facility in search of Anakin – it's easier when their bond is pulsing with life now, especially when he can actually make sense of what he was sensing from the other end – to find him circling restlessly around the base of the ladder where Leia is. Anakin half-stands on his back legs when he sees him approaching, pawing at the rungs like he's trying to climb, only to quickly realize probably again that he can't.

The uncomfortable feeling inside of him (and guilt) only grows, as he takes a few steps closer. "Anakin," he tries again, slightly softer than before.

(Did he run to find Leia, hoping she'd keep him safe? Why is he so attached Leia in the first place? He couldn't possibly have figured out who she is, right?)

Anakin drops back to the floor on all fours, hissing at him, though he backs away a step when Obi-Wan moves closer.

The anger – which he can feel is merely a front, the way it is for any cornered animal – is reminding him unsettlingly of Mustafar, and he wonders for a hysterical moment if the animalistic instincts Anakin clearly has now are actually paralleled to exactly how he was feeling on Mustafar when Obi-Wan had shown up to kill him. If that's why he was being so aggressive.

He can't forget how Anakin nearly killed him there, even if he can grudgingly admit that he attacked him first. After Anakin betrayed him and the Order. But that... doesn't really help him deal with this situation. (He can't even say how relieved he is that Anakin didn't die there, even if he doesn't know what that says about him.)

"I'm not here to hurt you," he says finally, crouching closer to eye level with the Tuk'ata, though several feet in front of it.

Anakin deflates a little, practically pressing himself against the floor and ladder like he's trying to be... invisible, tail curling between his legs.

"Don't be mean. He's trying to apologize."

Was that true about more than one thing? Could it be true?

The far-off sound of explosions intensifies, reminds Obi-Wan sharply that as much as he needs to deal with this right now, they're still under attack, and he's needed back there, too. "I need to know if you brought them here intentionally," Obi-Wan says, finally.

The dog presses closer to the ladder, but whines quietly.

No.

Now that he's paying attention, maybe he actually can partly interpret more of what the dog is saying than he thought, both from its body language, tone, and the Force.

The answer feels true, and it's both relieving and... (And does it mean Anakin came to them because he wanted to get away from the Inquisitors?)

"The Inquisitors brought you to Daiyu?" he asks, just to clarify.

He barks in confirmation.

So, he belonged to them, but he ran away. Belonged to them. Like – like a slave, the way he did on Tatooine. Obi-Wan has no idea what to think of that, or how Anakin's a Sith hound in the first place. That doesn't even make any sense.

And he highly doubts Sith become dogs after they die or something ridiculous. Besides, that only makes how much Anakin's been following him around – after he's the one who killed Anakin – hurt even worse, and he hastily banishes the thought.

Seeing how panicked the Tuk'ata is, though, is making him increasingly uncomfortable, and he doesn't know how to calm him down. Would Anakin even want to be touched right now, or –

Obi-Wan doesn't have longer to consider that, before an explosion rings out, and a flurry of blaster shots break lose. He's on his feet instantly, scrambling for the back of the compound, mildly surprised when Anakin trots after.
