Chapter Three

Amelia looks at him and rests a hand on his arm. "She's going to be okay Robert. I know what I'm doing and I have the highest success rate so just trust me. Okay?"

Robert can't bring himself to speak, so he just nods and watches as Amelia leaves the room.

After Andy leaves the room Robert walks out and goes over to where Vic and Travis were sitting.

"What's going on? We saw Andy leaving." Vic asked.

"Amelia is taking her up for surgery. Andy woke up and was feeling like shit so she asked if she could just get the surgery done as soon as possible."

"Surgery? For what?"

Robert almost wanted to hit himself. "She was diagnosed with cancer a month ago." He saw Vic and Travis' faces turn into frowns. "She got asked about the treatment plan a couple of days ago and she chose to do the surgery and then chemo." Robert finished. He watched Vic's expression turn to devastate and Travis' shock.

"What kind of cancer is it?" Vic managed to ask, still in shock.

Robert looked down, "Brain." Robert let out and both Vic and Travis gasped.

"Did you just find out today?" Travis asked a couple of minutes later after recovering from the news.

"I did," Robert said shortly. "I'm going to go to Maya's apartment and pack up her stuff and then I'm going to go back to ours and get changed out of this uniform and then I'll be back. I'm hoping you two can stay?" Vic and Travis nod. "Okay, great. I'll see you in a few hours." Robert told them. "Oh, Amelia said she doesn't know how long surgery will take so if you want to get any food or anything while you're waiting," Robert pulls out his wallet, "Here's my card." Robert handed it to Travis. "Use it wisely." he teased.

"Of course, sir. We will. I'll be sure to keep it away from Vic." Travis teased.

"Hey!" Vic exclaimed, slapping his shoulder.

"You know it's true though." Travis bantered.

"Alright, just don't go crazy please," Robert warned. "I'll be back as soon as I can," Robert called over her shoulder, walking away.

Once he was gone Vic and Travis looked at each other.

"What are we supposed to do now?" Travis asked.

"Like he said, we just stick around the hospital for hours, if Andy comes back in the room we let him know," Vic replied like it was the most obvious thing.

"Alright, I'll go get drinks and snacks. You stay here." Vic nods and Travis starts to walk away. When he turns around he saw Vic pull out her phone. "Vic!" Vic looked up, a what the hell expression on her face. "Don't text anyone from the station what's going on."

"Why not?" Vic looked confused.

"Because right now they don't deserve to know. We don't even deserve to know, Vic." Travis walked closer. "Robert and Andy are right. How many of us have tried to get Andy back at 19? How many of us have called her, or talked to her?" Travis looked down and back up. "Why didn't we try harder, Vic? We all stood up for Sullivan at his hearing and we had only known him for a couple of years. Yet we've known Andy for how many? She's the freakin' heartbeat of 19." Vic looked down.

"We just didn't want to stand up to McCallister, Trav."

"Yet we were willing to stand up for Sullivan to a board that ranks higher than McCallister? How is that fair? 23 was at the butt head of all our jokes and I bet Andy is getting a show of it." Travis argued.

"You know I heard Robert talking on the phone to someone and he repeated what Andy had told him when he went to talk to her months after she left him."

"What did he say?" Travis asked, eyebrows furrowing.

"I work at a station where I am the only woman. I work at a station where no one does their laundry often enough, and everything, including dinner, smells like feet. I work at a station that is not my home. My job is just a job now," Vic recited. "Travis, she's been miserable. How did none of us notice it? I mean, did you see how tired she looked today?"

"Vic, It's because of how she's been feeling physically. Cancer and pregnancy take a toll-"

"Oh, my god." Vic interrupts. "I was going to tell him after the first trimester"

"Huh?"

"That's what Andy said when Maya guessed that she was pregnant." Vic could tell Travis was still confused and rolled her eyes. "She had a miscarriage at some point, Trav."

Travis appeared to have a lightbulb moment, his mouth forming an 'o', "I really wish all this wasn't happening to her."

"I do too. It absolutely sucks." Vic agreed. "Want to go get us some coffee and snacks still?"

Travis, unable to get any words out, nodded and walked away.

Vic sighed and leaned back in her seat. She looked at her watch and saw that it was close to 4 pm. Andy doesn't deserve this. Vic furrowed her eyebrows. Where is Meredith through this? She asked herself. I mean, this is more Amelia's field, makes sense that she's taking the lead. Vic was so deep in her thoughts that she didn't hear footsteps come closer to her.

"Vic," Travis called. "Vic?" Travis could see she was zoned out getting closer to her. "Vic!" Travis exclaimed and Vic finally looked up.

"What?"

"You totally zoned out," Travis told her. "You okay?" He saw Vic nod so he put the snacks on the seat right of her while he sat on the left. "It's okay if you're not. I mean this is a serious surgery that Andy is going through right now."

"That is so not helpful right now, Trav," Vic told him, still worked up. "We have no idea how long this surgery is, we have no idea what's going on in it right now. We don't even know if she's cod-"

Vic got caught off. "Vic, stop. You can't think like that." Travis wrapped an arm around Vic and pulled her into him, trying to comfort her best he could at the moment.

"She has to be okay." Vic blurted out. "She has to. Even if they don't realize it she's the glue that's kept us together."
