Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.

This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.

This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.

Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.

Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.

Disclaimer-Nothing here but Vicky is mine.

This story is AU as well but does stretch over Season 5 and Season 5 alone.

Please Read and Review and I will update as soon as I can.

And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.

I have also stopped taking any kind of personal messages, any questions please leave them in a review and I will get back to them in the next chapter note. This chapter should be about twenty-twenty five chapters.

This chapter takes place in Al's point of view and is the parallel of the previous chapter. So quite a lot of dialogue is captured from that chapter.

The Spirit That I Have Seen

Chapter 3-Run, Hide, Fight

Alvin Olinsky's life is turned around by a phone call, or Intelligence lost Adam for six months until one day Kevin get's a phone call from a very traumatised child. Or basically Intelligence's point of view of the previous chapter.

It started out innocuous. It had started out find. They had found the snitch and while Adam had not technically been a snitch and while Adam had, had his balls over the fire he had been unable to stop the bone deep disappointment that had hit him when Hank's suspicions had been confirmed.

It's not like he had not known the kid was being blackmailed within an inch of his life and he had admired the kid's balls to turn Woods down at his own game but the thing that got to him, the thing that got him under his skin, the thing that made him want to punch the walls of his room until his knuckles bled was the fact that the kid had not come to him.

This was Adam, this was the kid that he had pulled out of the Academy personally, that he had partnered with, that he had drank with, that he had pulled off the locker room floor when Kim had trampled over his heart, this was the guy that deep down (and he was never, ever admitting this to anyone else—except for Meredith but at this point she just read his mind) he had considered his son.

And he had not come to Al when he had been in trouble.

If Adam had come to him when this had started…damnit they could have gotten ahead of it and it was that, that hurt. They had spent months thinking it was Antonio and making plans for if it was Antonio and then…

"Kid didn't have a choice really" Hank had pointed out and Al had sighed because that was not the fucking point.

But Hank was Hank and Hank was secure in the kid's loyalty so they had put a plan in place and then that had been it.

He had left Adam going to his car and he had gone home and then Adam had just…vanished.

He had not come to work the next day, his bed had not been slept in, his car found abandoned alongside his gun and his badge at the same place where Al and Hank had left him. There had been no obvious signs of a struggle, no DNA, no signal on his phone, no blood…nothing.

It was like the kid had just disappeared off the face of the Earth.

And they had looked.

Let's be quite clear they had looked.

They had all but burned down Chicago trying to look for Adam Ruzek. That first month and a half as time had ticked on and there was still nothing they had thrown everything that they had at the case, they had been given everything to throw at the case, Woods had given them everything they had wanted and they had looked for him but there had been nothing to go on. In nearly thirty years of police work Al had never seen anything quite like this. He had poured over the case file looking for something, anything but the months had ticked on and…nothing.

And then Bob Ruzek had suggested that that meant his son was dead and Al had nearly broken his jaw. Had it not been Jay and Kevin both of whom had seen him coming (Hank had been looking at his fingernails in a fabulous attempt of not being the guy in charge as he broke Bob's jaw) he would have succeeded.

They'd had to go back to other cases but there was always an open file, always an open thing, they didn't put someone in Intelligence to replace him, Kim still went to his apartment and watered his one plant, Kevin still made sure his car worked. For those six months of not knowing if Adam was alive or dead or what had happened they had worked themselves to the point where there was nothing left and for every white John Doe there was an Intelligence member there at the ME's office waiting to see if it was Adam Ruzek.

And then…

And then fate threw them a bone.

It was just a surprising one.

But hey…Al had thought he had lost both his children (because if the last six months had taught him anything it was that he did view Adam as his son), so if fate was throwing them a bone he was going to grab it with open hands.

It was just…unexpected.

It had been one of those days where they simply had to get paperwork done before they all got pulled up on it. Court cases didn't stop, interviews didn't stop and so they pulled themselves off the zone and they made it so that when they went back on it was Adam that they were looking for. It had been Jay's idea. To make it so that there was a weekend or a couple of days where all their focus was on their missing friend and that was enough. So they were racing through it trying to get it all done in one night when Kevin's mobile rang.

He checked the number and then answered it on rote.

"Atwater"

And then it happened.

He kicked back his chair with the full force of his body standing up so fast that Al thought he was going to do himself some damage. The chair banged against the wall and Jay stood up on instinct looking at him. Al knew that Hailey opposite him was reaching for her gun without question the two of them gelling together as partners and he knew Hank who had been staring at something Woods had put together with the same kind of disgust he used for child molesters was already looking up.

But his eyes were on Kevin who was listening to something on his phone and then…

And then…

"Adam? Ruzek? Ruz? ADAM!"

For a second nobody spoke and then Jay was over his desk so fast Al though he had jumped over it.

And that broke the spell.

"Is it him?" Kim said coming around her dark hair flying.

"I swear to God it was him" Kevin said putting the phone on loudspeaker, "I swear to God Sarge I had him, he said my name and now there's nothing"

"Antonio trace now" Hank said coming out of his office every inch the man in charge and Antonio scrambled to obey.

"What did he say?"

"He said my name Jay I swear to God"

"Well he's not saying anything now"

Kevin swore dropping his head to the desk and speaking into the phone in the middle of them.

"Adam, ADAM, RUZ, you need to tell me where you are right now so we can come and get you okay?! Adam—"

"Hello?"

And just like that they all stopped.

That was not Adam Ruzek's voice.

That was a child's voice.

Al caught Hank's eye who looked just as surprised as he did and he shrugged. Kevin looked up and Hank motioned that he should keep talking and the child on the phone (who must be young, probably under ten by voice alone Al thought) paused as if waiting for them to respond.

Kevin nodded and then when he spoke his voice was decidedly more gentle.

"Hello?"

"Hello?" the voice said back and he identified it as a tender age girl and she sounded…she sounded terrified…

"Well hello there, my name is Kevin, what's yours?"

"Vicky"

"Why hi Vicky, can I ask you a question?"

Vicky…to Al's knowledge it doesn't ring a bell, he doesn't think that any kids have gone missing with that name recently and he doesn't know anyone in Adam's life by that name but…

Hank looked at him and he pulled his head back into the game.

"Yes?"

"Okay Vicky…is…is my friend Adam with you?"

"Yes but I don't think he's okay. He's…well…he's stopped now but he was crying. Like really full on crying"

There's a pause as everyone takes that in. Al doesn't know what to make of it. Thirty years or so on the job and this is where his brain packs in.

But he doesn't know what to make of Adam suddenly falling to the ground and sobbing into the snow. If he thinks about it he thinks that his heart is going to break and that is the last thing that Adam needs right about now. Right now he needs him as a Detective. Right now that's what this kid doing all the talking to them needs. Detectives first and very scared friends and family later.

Kim next to him makes a little noise and Hailey next to her wrapped an arm around her in solid comfort. Everyone else is just watching.

"Keep her talking" Antonio says sharply. "Were getting a trace set up now but you've gotta keep her talking Kev—"

Kevin nodded and then he took a breath and carried on.

"Okay" he says softly though his hands are balled into fists on his desk.

"Okay…is he…is he hurt?"

"Yes. He's bleeding and his knee doesn't look good"

"Okay…Vicky can you…can you look for me honey and tell me where he's bleeding?"

There's a pause and then when she next speaks it's as if she's dropped a grenade into the room.

"His underwear"

Kim makes a noise that has Hailey wrapping both arms around her in a hug. Jay whacks his hand against the board in fury. Hank does nothing but Al's seen that look on his face and he knows what it means.

Which is good because Al is right there with him.

"Antonio get down to Trudy and get her up here now, Jay get on that phone and make sure the trace is working, Kevin get her back on the phone and keep her talking. Now"

Kevin nods as the other two immediately start following orders.

"Vicky?"

But there's nothing. Kevin keeps trying but there's still seconds before there's a response. Seconds before Trudy comes up the stairs with Antonio her face as white as chalk slotting in between the two of them like she's always done. Her hand finds his and he knows that Antonio has told her everything that has happened in the space of the last five minutes.

He holds her hand and he tells her that it's for her and not for himself.

Al is lying.

"icky…Vicky…Vicky are you still there honey?"

"Yes" she says quietly. "Yes I am still here. I don't…he's still breathing though, I think he's just passed out but he's very cold and so am I. He isn't wearing any clothes and…"

"Were you honey?"

Al shoots Kevin a look because he doesn't know why he is asking that but Kevin ever the big brother is watching the phone intensely.

"I'm in a jumper"

Kevin sighs and then he nods.

It is a very cold night Al think distractedly. He wouldn't want Lexie to be out on a night like tonight without a coat. Adam didn't have a coat with him when he disappeared. Just that jacket.

Get your head back in the game Olinsky you are not losing it now.

When in his doubt his wife's voice in his head does the trick.

"Vicky honey can you tell me where you are?"

"I don't know" she said and Al as the parent caught a look with Hank and Antonio both of them parents and they all knew that she was losing it. This kid had been brave beyond belief tonight but she was just a kid and a small one at that and she was losing it and it was clear to see. They didn't have much time before she lost it he knew and perhaps having raised Jordan and Vanessa alone for so long Kevin knew it too because he spoke with an increased urgency in his voice even as Jay passed the phone to Trudy so she could take over the trace.

And then she was wailing.

"I don't know Kevin! I just woke up and he was there and he was with me and…and I don't know what happened! I just remember being in the darkness and then suddenly I wasn't and—"

And then she stopped. Kevin shot Hank a terrified look but Hank shook his head.

And then the girl spoke and when she did it was in a calm tone, one of wonder as if she had just seen something and it was that more than anything else that had Alvin fearful in a way he had only been fearful once before and that was when he had pulled up to that burning building.

"Kevin?"

"Yes Vicky?"

"There's someone here. Watching me"

There was a start as Kevin looked up at them panic in his gaze.

"Trudy?"

"Two minutes and I have you something, it's not a cell looks like pay phone—"

"Sarge if someone is there then…"

"I know Jay"

"Someone's been watching them from the start?"

"That would be my guess"

"If it's the offender and he thinks she's gonna blow his cover—"

"Hailey I know"

Al breathed out and noticed Kim next to him, Hailey had left her to go and stand near Jay and Kim was still watching the phone panic on her face and her hands over her mouth. He moved to stand next to her on autopilot because while his team loved Adam there was always a little bit more between Adam and Kim and she looked at him and for all the world he wanted to tell Hank that Al had been right when Kim had first moved up the ladder. This job was going to break her heart and now here was the proof written all over her face.

It was breaking his heart now too.

"Vicky" Kevin spoke in a wood-be-calm kind of voice.

"Vicky is he coming over to you? Do you know him?"

"No…to both I think…he's just…staring…I can't see his face either. I…should I go over—"

"NO!" Kevin shouted just as Jay did and Hank snarled at them both to shut up. Al couldn't blame either one the tension was getting too much even for him. Kim next to him made a little noise and Al took her hand uncaring of how it must look. She was shaking and she looked at him big eyes full of heartbreak and she saw her visibly try to pull herself together.

What she was seeing in his face she really couldn't think.

"No, Vicky no, sweetheart listen to me I need you to stay where you are…can you tell me where you are calling from?"

"A payphone"

Vicky didn't say anything after that despite their best attempts and Kevin wiped his face scrubbing a hand over the skin as if he wanted to rip it off. Antonio gripped Jay's shoulder and collectively everyone took a breath apart from Hank who Al was pretty sure had given up on breathing a long time ago.

"Trudy?"

"A minute, everyone get ready, Kevin keep her on the phone"

There was a scramble for guns and jackets as everyone followed her instructions and then…

"Kevin?"

"Kid…Vicky what happened?" Kevin said still gripping the phone as he got his jacket on. He was shaking again and Al couldn't blame him. Everytime this kid took a breath the seconds ticked on forever.

"I went looking for the man"

There was a pause as everyone stopped.

"Jesus" Antonio said quietly. "This kid is going to be the death of us"

"Kid I told you not to do that"

"I know…but I think I found something that might help"

She sounded ridiculously pleased with herself. It was endearing and cute and reminded him of Lexie when she had gotten ten out of ten on her maths test and would demand Al put it on the fridge. Or when Adam had caught his first perp and he had come into the locker rooms beaming with pride.

"Go on."

"Where the man was standing there was a bar and it had a sign and I saw it!"

"Brilliant Vicky" Kevin said grinning as the kid rattled off what she had seen.

"Got her" Trudy said grinning. "It's O'Rouke's it's owned by the Doyle family or it was…streets mostly empty now but there is a payphone at the end of the street and my guess is that's where she's calling from. In fact…" There was a pause as the ding (the most beautiful sound in the world in Al's opinion). "That is where she is calling from"

"Kevin keep her on the line, the rest of us go. Al you ride with Kevin, Kim come with me, Jay, Hailey you too and Antonio go with Trudy"

And with that they were off. After six months of nothing, after six months of endlessly waiting it felt so…so good to have something to do.

Were coming for you Adam he thought desperately as Kevin wrenched the car door open and slid into the passenger seat phone still on speaker. Just hang on for me son I am coming for you.

"Kevin?"

"Yeah honey?"

"Adam really doesn't look good. He's awake but he's not at the same time…he's turning blue a bit as well. I can't tell if the bleeding has stopped either but he's not making much sense"

Kevin looked sideways at him but it was all Al could do to keep his hand on the wheel and his foot on the gas. Hank was ahead and he was driving like a manic and that was comforting beyond belief.

"You heard Hank" he said quietly. "Keep her talking, the more she talks the less she's gonna think about how cold she is"

Kevin nodded.

"Vicky?"

"Sorry" she said hiccupping out a little sob in a way that had the parental side in Alvin just aching to wrap her up in blankets and hug her.

"I'm not much help am I?"

Al shook his head. This kid had done more in the last ten minutes than most cops did in a lifetime and he was going to do his best to make sure that she knew it. If he ever did anything else in his life it was going to be to make sure that she knew it.

"Hey now" Kevin said shaking his head with an expression that told Al he was not the only here who wanted to reach through the phone and hug this brave little girl with everything they had (woe betide the person who had done this to her when Intelligence got to it).

"Vicky?"

"Yes Kevin?"

"We know where you are?"

"You do?"

"Yeah, were coming to get you okay? But I need you to stay with Adam and I need you to stay exactly where you are, no more running after strange men, if that man comes back I need you to stay there okay?"

"I'm gonna sit down" she said finally. "I'm really, really cold Kevin"

"Okay honey you sit down" Kevin said his voice gentle. "Can you still speak to me if you sit down?"

"Yes"

"Then sit down, I'm gonna stay right on the phone with you okay?"

"You are?"

"Yeah sweetheart I am, you just keep awake and you keep listening to the sound of my voice okay. If anything changes with Adam though I need you to tell me"

"He's still pretty out of it" she said quietly. "I can't get him to wake up fully"

"Alright well I can do that" Kevin said sharing a grin with Al. Al couldn't grin back yet. When they had Adam…then he would smile. Not before.

"You're doing brilliantly Vicky" Kevin said as if he could hear the thoughts jumping around the kid's head. "Your doing so well, I promise you we are nearly there, your gonna hear sirens soon okay?"

"Okay" she said and her voice was tiny again.

"Kevin?"

"Yeah I'm here Vicky"

"Kevin I think Adam might be dying"

"FUCK" Kevin snarled pulling away from the phone and looking at Al as he took a sharp right. Jay was behind him, Hank was in front of him and his hands were all but glued to the wheel.

"Keep her talking Kevin"

"Al what if she's right—"

"Kevin keep her talking right now. If she falls asleep she might not wake up—KEEP HER TALKING!"

Kevin nodded his face the very definition of heartbreak and Al mused to himself that Adam and Kim and Kevin were not all that different from him and Hank and Trudy. All three of them had come up at the same time just like they had done but Kim had stayed down a little bit longer just like Trudy had done, Trudy who had no interest and never had in wearing a gold shield and who had wanted to stay on the beat. Just like Sean Roman had wanted to do, just like Bob…well…maybe that was a bad example. Bob Ruzek had just been bone ideal lazy. At least Roman had, had principals even if he did have issues taking orders.

"Vicky we are five minutes out, if he looks like he is about to go to a great white light you kick him for me okay?"

"K"

"Vicky I need you to tell me as soon as you hear the sirens okay?"

"Okay"

"You're doing so good Vicky…I can't tell you…we have rookies that don't do as well as you have"

"You're a cop too?"

"Yeah I am and were coming to get you. Just a few minutes longer."

"Vicky?"

"Hmm?"

"Don't you fall asleep on me girl"

Al turned to look at Kevin in surprise as they took a sharp turn down another street because even he had not known and he could practically hear the kid thinking the same thing down the phone before she asked the question out loud. Kevin gave a little chuckle and spoke for both their benefit. "

"I have a sister kiddo I know."

There was another pause and the most beautiful thing in the world happened.

"I can hear you"

"Yeah you can sweetheart, were gonna come down the street now, I want you to stay on the phone with me until the end okay?"

"K"

They were down the street now and he could see the phone box and he skidded to a stop and he and Kevin were both out the car before it really stopped moving, Hank was there too, Antonio, Jay, Kim, Trudy, Hailey all of them and there was the phone box and there he was…Adam.

Al managed to get a look at the kid who was curled up in the box with him and saw one blue eye and a mass of hair and bruised knees but his attention was on Adam who was leaning upright in his boxers his head lolling to the side. Whatever had happened it was not good as he and Antonio dragged him back out onto the street.

"Oh dear—"

"Hailey call me a bus now"

"On it"

But Al didn't have eyes for any of that. He only had eyes for Adam, he only had eyes for the kid that was bleeding on the ground half unconscious, starved, clearly beaten, clearly freezing. Gently he took his coat off and placed it over him though he doubted at this point it would do any good.

"Jesus" Jay said doing the same over Adam's bare feet and then taking Antonio and Hailey's and doing the same thing so that Adam was warm.

"Bus is two mins out"

"I'm calling Will giving him a head's up were coming in"

Gently he reached out and brushed some of the hair out of Adam's eyes and then there was a slither of something behind the eyelids as Adam's eyes flickered long enough to see just who was in front of him.

For a second Al clung to the blue eyes and gently he reached under the blanket for his hand but as he did Adam jerked away and his eyes fell shut and looking up to Hank who was watching with that dark gaze that he had whenever someone dared to hurt his family Al wondered what on Earth had happened to Adam in the last six months for him to look at them, at his team, at his family, at Al, with utter terror in his eyes.

And there you go, I hope that you enjoyed this chapter and I hope that you will enjoy the next one when I write it.

Next Chapter-Adam is rushed to Chicago Med, Vicky won't leave Kevin's side and Intelligence has to start somewhere piecing together the puzzle.
