Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.

This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.

This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.

Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.

Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.

Disclaimer-Nothing here but Vicky is mine.

This story is AU as well but does stretch over Season 5 and Season 5 alone.

Please Read and Review and I will update as soon as I can.

And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.

I have also stopped taking any kind of personal messages, any questions please leave them in a review and I will get back to them in the next chapter note. This chapter should be about twenty-twenty five chapters.

AND TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS CHAPTER AND DISCUSSION OF RAPE. PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND.

The Spirit That I Have Seen

Chapter 6-Secrets As Weapons

Voight goes looking for clues as Woods turns up to the Crime Scene. Adam comes out of surgery. Jay wants answers. Slightly shorter chapter.

"Woods"

He turned to see Denny Woods himself coming out the car like he owned the fucking crime scene and he gritted his teeth. Antonio next to him stiffened looking between the two of them as if he was an bystander at the wreck of a terrible car crash and he stopped what he was doing to watch them.

"Don't do anything" Antonio said as Woods came closer. "Seriously Voight I don't know what is going on between you two but you cannot do it here" he said quietly.

"I know that"

"Then might I suggest you get your hand off your gun"

Hank looked down and yep, yep his hand was on his gun and so he took his hand off it and flexed the fingers, it was instinct he told himself, sheer instinct, reflex and reflux working together and so he forced himself to smile as Denny Woods who he was sure, he was sure had something to do with this whole mess, stepped across the crime scene uncaring of what he was trampling over to stand in front of them.

"Hank"

"Denny"

"Dawson"

"Sir"

"I heard Ruzek has been found?"

"Yep he has" he said with that same terrible smile that had Antonio shooting him a look from the side as it to say abort, abort, abort. But that would make Hank a different man and a different cop so he carried on smiling all the while thinking how hard would it be, really if he shot this man right here and now and claimed that it was self defence?

Because he knew Denny, he knew Denny, he knew how Denny operated. He knew that he had gone after Adam not because he had, had a weak spot that could be exploited (and admittedly Adam had been utterly stupid in doing what he did—not that when he had met Adam's sister he could blame him, Christ what he would have done to get the woman to shut up) but he had also gone after Adam because he had seen the closeness with Adam and Al and had seen a way to twist the knife in. So while the handcuffs that would go back on him would be down to Adam it would be Al who would feel the strongest sting of betrayal.

As much as Hank hated it the idea had been rather ingenious. Problem was Denny kept forgetting that he was smarter. He was a cop who had not only done time in Statesville but who had come out of it and managed to get not only his own job back but a promotion, a unit and more leeway than any other department in the entire CPD.

So yeah, he had this. There was no need for Antonio to look so worried, if Denny was behind this…then Hank would damn well find out and make him pay.

And he would. Adam was a part of his team, a part of his family and while Hank had been furious with the kid when he'd had time to calm down that night he'd known that in reality Adam had been put in a really shitty place.

What had hurt was that he hadn't come to Hank. Jay, Antonio, Hailey, he might have expected something like that because they had a different relationship. Adam and Kevin and Kim…he had brought them up almost, from scratch, moulded them until they were good at their job but had stopped enough so that they wouldn't turn into him (last thing he needed was another Erin, the first one had been totally original and hard enough to get his brain around) and so when that betrayal had hit him he had been knocked for six.

"What have we got then?" Denny asked and Antonio filled in the gaps and Hank noticed that he kept Vicky out of it for as long as he could. He didn't think, couldn't think how long they were going to keep that six year old a secret but the longer they could keep her wrapped up in cotton wool the better as far as he was concerned. He had no idea what was going to happen but he knew enough to know that the second Denny found that they had a witness something bad was going to happen.

Call it gut instinct but after all this time as cop Hank was going to listen to it.

He had expected to see Adam first thing the next morning ready to work on a plan and yet Adam had not shown up and then the whole thing had snowballed fast into his own personal version of hell. Hank did not do well with cases he couldn't solve and this had been unsolvable no matter how many times he kicked aside the coffee table and spread out the case on his living room floor trying to look at it from all the angles possible.

And then there had been that phone call and still he couldn't get his brain to move. It kept circling back to Denny and that was what worried him. Because his instincts kept telling him it was the man in front of him listening to Antonio's report the picture perfect image of a worried cop checking in on another and yet what had been done to Adam was so horrific…he just…he didn't know if Denny had that level of anger, that level of violence in him.

He had never been this unsure of himself before, even with Justin he had never been this unsure. Sure he'd had qualms about going after Matt Casey in the beginning especially as the idiot had ruined a perfectly good plan of his (he had not planned to leave that father bankrupt for the rest of his life after all and he had certainly not planned to leave him wallowing in guilt—that was what insurance pay-outs were for after all) but he had pushed all of that aside because it was his family. He had done it time and time again and yet somehow with this case he was as unsure of himself as he had been when he had been handed his first big case as a Detective and he'd had no way of figuring out the answer.

"You alright Hank?"

He forced himself to look at Denny. There was nothing different—not that Hank expected to be but the truth was he knew the other man's mettle now. He had blackmailed one of his officers, one of Hank's baby faced officers and he had tried to undercut Hank at the knees, to say nothing of the man who had gone to prison for twenty five years because Denny had five fingered the line up in a cheap way of getting to a man who had slipped through his fingers time and time again and then had been quite comfortable in letting Hank take the blame for the entire thing.

The whole thing was pathetic.

Denny was pathetic really.

"Oh I'm fine Denny"

"And Ruzek?"

"Not good"

That was an understatement though. Adam was very, very bad, actually at this point Hank was half waiting for a phone call that told him that he had to get his dress blues out and bury a kid who was supposed to have a long and healthy life, a kid that despite his best efforts he had come to respect and love and who he wanted to help. He would have gotten Adam out of this mess if he had shown up to work the next day and whatever had happened to him Hank was going to fix it and if the man who committed these crimes was the man standing in front of him in the shiny three piece suit? Well…handcuffs would be the least of Denny Woods worries then. And that was before he let Al and Trudy on him. Actually come to think of it, it might be better to just let those two handle the arrest…Hank could go back to his office crack open a bottle of scotch and then three weeks later ask for his shovel back cleaned with copious amounts of bleach.

"Well it's a good thing he has you on the scene" Denny said with all the sweetness of overly sugared treacle. Hank smiled back and it hurt his face with how sweet it was. He was not used to smiling in ways such as this. Actually come to think of it he was not used to smiling that much. From the look on Antonio's face it was almost unnerving.

"How bad was that?" he asked when Denny eventually walked away.

"Not good" Antonio said. "I tried to keep Vicky out of it but he knows…he didn't have to say it but he knew"

Hank nodded. "Could have heard about it from someone on the way in?"

"Or he could have been stood there and watched as she called us" Antonio said quietly. It was said as a whisper but it didn't mean that it was any less true and Hank turned to look at him and he knew what he was thinking was reflected in his face and that Antonio, the guy who had put cuffs on him could see what was in front of him.

"If he knows that Vicky was there because he was watching her then he's got to be worried that she was going to recognise him"

"If it is Denny then he is not going to make a move on that girl at the hospital" Antonio said quietly. "Kevin won't leave her side and Al won't leave until he knows Adam is going to be okay. Jay's up there too"

"Get Hailey to the labs and park her ass in front of the evidence and make sure that there is no interference. I don't want her to let even so much as a fibre of clothing out of the way do you understand me? She keeps an eye on everything"

Antonio nodded and then he was gone and Hank watched as Denny turned and headed back into his car. For a second the two of them stared at each other and then the fucker had the audacity to smile and Hank watched as he got into his car and drove away.

His hands were still balled into fists in his jacket when he turned around and walked back to the crime scene but even years later he would never know weather or not it was to stop them from shaking or weather or not it was to stop himself from going back to Denny and smacking his face into the side of the car until it was a bloody mess.

"Jay?"

"Yeah Will?"

Will looked at him and Jay put down the coffee that he had gotten in Al's hands who stared at him with narrowed eyes and then proceeded to put the coffee cup aside and stand up.

"He's awake" Will said shortly. "Came out an hour ago and he's groggy but awake"

"And you didn't think to tell us that he was alive I don't know? An hour ago?" Al said butting into the conversation. Will turned to look at him and the confusion was still in his eyes but this was Will the Doctor, this was Will the Doctor and Jay knew that he was going to protect his patient no matter the costs and he knew that he was going to protect his friend.

"He's asking for you Jay" he said quietly. "Only you, he's still pretty out of it but he's asking for you"

"You mean—"

"Just Jay Al, it needs to be just Jay"

And there it was. Al looked at them both and it was as if he was seeing them both for the first time. For a second Jay genuinely thought that he was going to body slam them both into the floor and then go to find Adam himself. Jay didn't know what the relationship between Adam and Al was, it was always a bit of a mentorship, a bit of a friendship and what he supposed a father and son relationship and yet somehow it was all confused and messy.

Though that being said Jay was the last person that should speak about father and sons and their relationships, his own with his own father was almost non-existent and so he didn't understand the yearning burning need that was on Al's face as if he didn't know why his son didn't want to see him.

Jay turned to look at Will and Will nodded and then he was pressing past Al and towards the elevators towards the Intensive Care Unit where Adam was being held and he waited until the elevator doors were shut before he felt his face crumple.

When the doors opened his face was perfectly smooth and when he walked to Adam's door his smile was on his face.

Nobody needed to know that he'd had a breakdown in the elevator like some pre-pubescent girl.

But Will would know.

And maybe that was enough.

And there you go, I hope you enjoyed this chapter and I will bring you the next one sooner.

Next Chapter-Jay and Adam talk. It does nothing to help Jay's paranoia. Al meanwhile calls in a very different kind of back up for Vicky.
