Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.

This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.

This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.

Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.

Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.

The Spirit That I Have Seen

Chapter 8-A Matter Of Mutual Concern

Intelligence, sans two members meet to discuss what is going on and what Adam said. Problem is those two members aren't stupid. Not in the slightest.

"So let me get this straight" Hailey said her head in her hands and she looked up tugging her hair back behind her ears looking very much as if she wanted to tear it out herself.

"Adam thinks that Voight and Olinsky did this?"

"Yep" Jay said popping the P.

"Fuck"

"Yep" he said finally and there was nothing that Hailey could say to that.

"And the thing with Woods?"

"Antonio man tell me you wouldn't have done the same thing—"

"Jay I lost my son for fourteen hours, fifteen minute and twenty eight seconds and believe me I counted all of those hours, minutes and seconds. If there was someone standing between myself and my son then I would have moved mountains. Adam was caught between a rock and a really shitty place. And to be honest his sister is the one who should have known better than to drive drunk with her kid in the car and then ask Adam to make it go away. The fact that Woods is blackmailing him isn't the issue"

"I know. The issue is Voight and Al"

"There's no way" Kim said suddenly shaking her head. "Come on there is no way—"

"Isn't there?"

Carefully none of them answered.

Jay sighed. Kim got the distinct impression that he hated the fact that he had to be the one to take charge like this but right now he was the only one who had been in the room with Adam…the only one Adam had trusted. It was hard not to follow his lead on a good day…right now it was not a good day.

"I don't know" Jay said finally. "I don't…I just…I think that we need to decide what to do. All of us here—"

"Al and Voight did not torture and rape Adam" she said and oh…oh that was a sentence she didn't dare think she would ever say out loud.

But there it was hanging in the room and everyone looked at her for a second and Jay's gaze softened.

"I know that Kim, I think we all do, I'm not quite sure how Vicky filters into it either but we all know Voight and Al are never going to hurt a child but…but I think we need to find out what happened the night Adam disappeared"

"Funny how they never mentioned they were the last to see him" Hailey muttered and Jay nodded. Kim didn't know what to think, she trusted Al, she had entrusted Al with her life on more than one occasion and she had entrusted him with her education as a cop in the same way she had entrusted Platt. Partners were supposed to have each others back and when Adam had gone missing and the reality was that he was more than likely dead it had been Al who had driven her home and held her like she was his own child and not judged her for it.

"The last thing Adam remembers was walking towards Voight and after that it is a total blank."

It didn't matter how many times Jay said it, it still sounded strange to her.

"He didn't know it had been six months?" Hailey asked and Jay nodded.

"That was my bad Jay—"

"Someone was going to let it slip to him at some point Kev"

"There's another problem" Hailey said quietly and everyone turned to look at her.

"What?"

"Well…Al's desperate to see him, Voight's not gonna be far behind either. My guess is sooner or later their gonna want a reason as to why they can't see him—"

Jay groaned. "He won't cope with that" he said and Kim wanted to cry just at the tone in his voice.

"He won't…Kev you saw him. I don't even want to think about how were gonna explain what's happened to him. I even mention Voight or Al and his heart rate is spiralling."

"What if we explained it to him?"

"Explained what Kim? We don't know what happened and…are we gonna trust the official explanation?"

That was Hailey again and maybe Kim thought it was her being the newest team member but she had…Kim didn't know what it was but it was like she had the ability to say things that the rest of them would never say. She thought about what Erin would have said if she had thought that Voight was being questioned like this and she had to hide a wince at the thought of it. Maybe in hindsight it was a good thing to get an outsiders perspective on this.

Hailey looked at them all and then shrugged.

"I thought that was why we were here"

"It is" Jay said taking the command decision again. "We need to know what's been going on. And then…I don't think we should let either one of them see Adam until…"

"Good luck with that one" Hailey muttered and Antonio snorted in agreement. Jay ignored both of them.

"We can do the interview, we can do it all, Kevin what do you think about Vicky?"

"Al brought in Meredith to sit with her. I don't see her letting or doing anything to Vicky. I don't think…Jay we might be able to get more out of her but not without sitting her down to do some kind of cognitive thing and I think that is just gonna freak her out. Right now that kid can count the people she trusts on one hand. I think out best bet is getting Adam to do it when he's able too"

"Any news on when the family from hell are due to descend?"

Hailey again.

"No" Kim said because this was what she had been doing. "Dad's in Florida and he wants to come and see Adam but and I quote 'doesn't know when he is able to get down. Sister's fucking MIA and Mom…well…Mom wants to know how bad he is before she makes any changes to her travel plans"

There was a pause and then Jay sighed.

"Families like that make me wish I sent Pat a Christmas card"

"So it's us"

"Looks like it"

Hailey nodded. "Well we went over the crime scene, nothing. Just blood and we knew that, no pods, no cams, nothing. Perfect place for someone to dump them"

"You think they were dumped"

"No way is Adam walking in his condition. Will's pretty much said so"

"Injuries fresh?"

Jay nodded. Antonio worked his jaw.

"So lets say they did what they did and—"

"Some of them are old, a lot of fractures and stuff that's healed wrong, Vicky's the same but there's a lot less"

"Adam's stood in front of her for a lot of it no doubt" Kevin muttered.

And Kim knew it to be true. She knew Adam, she had wanted…fuck it she still did want to build a life with Adam when all of this was over. She knew Adam from his very bones outwards and she knew that there was no way Adam was sitting ideal while some creep dared to hurt a kid. Adam would stand in front of Vicky until he couldn't stand anymore and even then he would kneel. It was just who Adam was.

"Guys we need to make a decision about Voight and Al preferably in the next ten seconds"

Everyone turned to look at Hailey who from where she was sat was in prime view to see the elevators.

"Why?"

"Cause they are heading this way Jay"

Jay barely had enough time to swear and then the door was opening. Kim didn't dare look. She knew that if she did the questions would spiral out and she didn't want that.

Voight looked at them in that way a parent will look at a group of children who he knew were throwing a party even when they were told not to. Al was looking at Jay and it was clear that he had not bought Jay's excuses over Adam at all.

Jay squared his jaw and then nodded.

Voight let the door shut behind them.

"Do you want to tell me what the hell is going on? I sent all of you on specific jobs and then I turn around and find out that you haven't done any of them and are hear holding what? Some kind of group get together?"

It was said in that soft, silent and very deadly way that Voight could speak and as one the entire team looked towards Antonio and Jay, the two senior guys on the squad. For a second the two of them looked at each other too and then Jay nodded again.

"Yeah alright, I just spoke to Adam"

"What did he say?" Al said sitting on the edge of the chair and looking almost hopeful. "Did they say if we can see him?"

"He doesn't want to see you" Jay said bluntly. "I mentioned the tow of you and his heart rate when sky high. And then once I got him to calm down he said some very interesting things"

Al looked completely non-plussed. Kim looked at Voight though and she got the impression that maybe Voight knew what was coming but admittedly with Voight it was hard to tell. Kim thought he was like that on purpose.

"Okay?"

"When were the two of you planning to mention that you were the last two to see him six months ago?"

For a second the two of them stared and Kim blinked because she had never seen either one of them speechless but she reckoned Jay had done it.

"What?"

Oh god, that flatness in Voight's tone was never good. Never.

"You have perfect hearing Sarge don't make me say it again"

Hailey choked out something that might have been a giggle but turned it into a hacking cough at the last second. Emboldened by this no doubt Jay continued speaking into the void.

"He told me about Woods by the way so we know about that. You didn't think that might have helped us six months ago when we were breaking our backs trying to look for him?"

Voight didn't speak for a second and Kim wondered if he was trying to figure out what to say. If there was something that he could say.

Al spoke then.

"He thinks Woods did this to him?"

Jay snorted and twisted his head to the side and then when he looked back at them his expression was one of deep frustration.

"No Al he thinks you and Voight did this to him"

It hung in the room like a hand grenade that just gone off. The look on Al's face was one of the…well…Kim had only ever seen that look on Al's face once before and that was when she had turned up to see Lexie half burnt to death and Al had been pushed out the room.

Voight…Voight just looked stunned. There was no other way to describe it. He looked utterly, utterly stunned.

Looking at them Kim had to wonder how Adam had thought that they were responsible. She knew obviously but…but it was clear from their expressions that they'd had nothing to do with this. Nobody, not even Hank Voight, was that good an actor.

"He thinks we what?"

That was Al and the softness in his tone was a gut punch to them all.

Jay watched them both for a second and then sighed.

"He thinks…I don't know…the last thing he remembers is walking to your car. He…he hates himself for what he did and—"

"He didn't do anything" Voight said his tone back to normal looking at Al and then to Jay in quick, rapid succession. "I mean…he didn't plant anything! I knew that. I just…I just needed to look him in the eye and ask what Woods had and what he wanted and—Christ I had explained that to him. I explained it to him!"

"You couldn't have explained it to us?" Hailey asked her expression one of deep distrust. "I mean…we were looking for him, we checked every angle for him and you kept this pretty big one to yourselves."

"We did…we looked into Woods, Al and me, of the books, there was nothing, nothing that warranted us to look further. He…believe me we checked."

He looked at all of them and then sighed.

"You are all free to check again if you want but—"

"He could have hired someone?"

"Motive"

"Adam didn't rat you out"

"I looked at it Antonio I did but to keep someone for six months, to hire someone to keep someone for six months you gotta make some big changes and Woods didn't and then we had the gang lead and then we had that guy down by the Riverwalk we were sure was it and—"

He didn't have to continue they all knew the story by now. They had been living, eating and breathing different suspects for months thinking with each one that would appear out of nowhere that they would find Adam and then every time the rug had been pulled out from under us. It was as if he had just vanished from the face of the Earth. Even now Kim was not sure how the person responsible for it had pulled it off because everything obvious had been checked.

"Jay man we gotta see him, I've got to see him, I need to tell…he needs to know that we wouldn't do this"

Jay's expression softened again but this time it was Kevin that spoke.

"We can go in and explain Al but if you appear at the door way he's gonna have a heart attack. I think we've got to get Vicky in there with him. I know that the Med lot downstairs don't think it's a good idea but Adam keeps asking about her and she keeps asking about him. I think we need to get them in the same room together. And then…well…we gotta figure out who she is"

"Well she's not missing" Kim said suddenly and everyone looked at her. "Platt ran her through Missing Persons and she doesn't flag. It doesn't look like anyone is out there looking for her and if so DCFS is gonna come looking for her"

"Like hell is that girl going in a foster home"

"Al—"

"Hank I will adopt her myself before I let that happen. She stays with us in protective custody"

"Alright" Voight said and he looked suddenly very tired. He rubbed his eyes and then nodded.

"Alright this is what we are going to do, we are going to give you everything that we pilled up on Woods, Jay, Antonio, Kevin look through it and see if we missed anything, your right we should have told you, it wasn't a deception on our part I just…I genuinely didn't think that Woods was behind it. It's a huge thing for him and believe me rape isn't his style. But your right we should have told you. That night we talked and we made a plan to sting Woods, I saw Adam walk to his car, Al to his and me to mine and that was that. When I drove off he was still there in his car. I thought he had gone home. It never occurred to me that he wouldn't"

"Where you followed?"

"I didn't think to check" Al said quietly. "I don't think so but I didn't…"

"Right, Kevin, Antonio, Jay take the Woods angle and then we can put that to bed. Hailey I need you to get to the office and safe guard that evidence with your life. I need you to do that. I don't want anyone Morales, Woods, anyone getting near that evidence do you understand me?"

Hailey was already on her feet.

"Kim…I need you to get Platt to keep Vicky with us for the time being and then I need you…how much does Adam know?"

"He knows it's been six months, he doesn't know he was raped but someone is going to tell him that" Jay said in a rush mouth twisted. "You know that they are gonna want to talk to him before they release him. Doctor Charles has offered his assistance twice already and Goodwin is looking for you too"

"Right" Voight said grimly. "Kim…you think you can tell him?"

Kim didn't nod. She couldn't nod. She didn't think she could speak.

"I can tell him"

"Al"

"Hank he already hates me it may as well be me"

"He doesn—"

"Jay. I will tell him. Kim can be in the room and that should…should help I suppose."

He said it in such a defeated tone that nobody could respond to it.

"Right" Voight said again his voice slightly strangled. "Right okay…so that's what we are going to do. But I don't want us hampered by this Woods thing. I need you all going through any active suspects that we had to find out if we missed something, Vicky is a new piece of the puzzle, Hailey you start that and for Gods sake head off whoever comes asking"

There was a pause and then Voight sighed looking more and more like his normal usual self.

"What are you all waiting for?"

It was like he was the parent and they were the kids because they all jumped too like he had told them no desert until they had cleaned their rooms leaving as one until it was Kim and Al in the room Voight gripping his friends shoulder tightly as he left.

"You okay?" Al asked her suddenly and Kim shook her head.

"You?" she said and her tone was strangled.

"Nope" he said sighing. "But we've got to do this"

"Can we give him one more minute? We go in there and we blow his life apart. He can have one more minute can't he?"

Al looked at her sideways for a second and then he nodded.

"Yeah" he said reaching out and taking her hand and she gripped it tightly taking comfort from it even though there was no comfort to be found here.

"Yeah we can give him one more minute"

And so that was what they did.

In the grand scheme of things it wasn't much.

But it was everything.

Everything.
