Chapter 15: Parent-Teacher Day Age 27

Current Ages:

Boruto-7

Himawari- 5

"April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of dead land, mixing memory with desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain."

-T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land

Naruto & Hinata

"Well, come on! One of you has to take us or both of you come with us y'know!" Boruto huffs with a cross of his arms.

He studies them for a minute longer seeing the fog in their eyes, a confusion that shouldn't be there. They might not have fevers or stomachaches, but Papa and Mama are acting too weird.

This day they drilled such importance into is already going sideways.

Boruto pulls on Naruto's arm forcing him halfway off the bed, face wrinkling at his morning breath and his lopsided grin.

'He's nearly the height he was for the day I was inaugurated.' Naruto absently recalls, blond locks tussled together semi-neatly.

"Ugh, I'll help you guys be faster!" Boruto decides, shuffling open drawers while pushing the blinds open.

The pair wince as rays of gold tumble into the room, sunlight instantly burning away the cool dark of night. The garden outside is alive with spring, hyacinths shades of pink and violet, snaking lily of the valleys in the cool shade of the trees. Nearby it, azaleas bloom in bundles of cottony pinks and reds.

Spring. A new season; the start of the school year...

Himawari jumps in to help, searching and grabbing at their favorite combs, lotions, and soaps.

Naruto and Hinata study each other silently. They remember enrolling Boruto in school, however that was just for preschool and then kindergarten. They have some idea of what school supplies they'll both need, but they won't know what current subjects he's on or even upcoming lessons.

Himawari was still a toddler so maybe they don't need to worry so much regarding her, though she gazes at them now with half curiosity and the half matching impatience of her brother at their lack of movement.

Have they both been doing well in school? Are there behavior patterns or issues they should already be aware of or have be addressed in this visit?

The last thing they need are strangers determining or believing that they're unfit parents, too forgetful or lackadaisical about their children's education.

Because not everybody is going to buy or even care about their time loop dilemma...

Naruto's mind flickers to Danzo and all his associates, people from his generation that think exactly like him.

They have nothing to go off of and unlike previous loops, it seems Boruto and Himawari won't wait for them to figure things out.

"Um, we just woke up y'know! At least let Mom and I wash our faces and get ready!" Naruto claps his hands, forming decisions quickly.

"Yes! We'll be ready and downstairs in about 5-10 minutes." Hinata promises, matching her husband's energy.

He'll call Pervy-Sage, hope he picks up, then go from there on what information he has.

Boruto pouts. "We can't be late, so hurry."

Himawari quickly nods, lips setting in a deepening frown. "We'll get in trouble with our new sensei if we don't get there on time!"

Hinata sends her a calming grin they'll make it in time or at least she hopes whichever teachers or advisors assigned to them will be understanding if they run a few minutes late, though both their kids study them warily.

They aren't buying this.

Still, they move a bit faster than usual washing up and changing from their pajamas, Naruto multitasking brushing his teeth and calling Jiraiya.

"Any luck?" Hinata asks from behind him, slipping into a lavender dress top and black pants she must buy at some point in the future.

Hopefully this looks professional enough.

Naruto shakes his head, rinsing out his mouth as his lips twist into a scowl.

'Come on Pervy-Sage! I know you don't like to get up this early, but this an emergency y'know!'

Finally on his 5th repeated cycle of ringing is he greeted with a yawn, slurred words of a man heavily half-asleep.

"Kid, what's the emergency to be calling me back to back? I was up all last night at The Velvet Room and then Club Devious-" Jiraiya asks flatly. His head throbs at the rude awakening, sour tastes of rice sake and Sapporo liqueur bubbling at the back of his throat.

Naruto cuts him off, repeats the toad idiom and what days they've already looped through.

Hinata leans against his shoulder as Jiraiya clears his throat, ebbs of sleep instantly receding away.

"Well, I have good news and bad news for you guys! Which would you like first?" Jiraiya questions.

Blue crosses to pearl, Naruto shrugging muttered for the good first.

They need some positive news before this day potentially goes from bad to worst.

"I'm here in village! I'll meet you guys near the entrance of the Academy. However, I can't say I know the full details of how school enrollment will go for Boruto and Himawari, it seems to change with every passing year. Though I can at least help you guys not look so puzzled to avoid eliciting concern or suspicion."

"How soon can you get there?" Hinata questions.

Jiraiya hums. "Gotta wash last night's festivities off and let Tsunade know where I've gone. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes or so."

As if the mention of time summons them, they hear Boruto and Himawari's knocking at the door.

"We're super running late now Papa, Mama! Please stop kissing and hugging so we can get going y'know!" Boruto commands.

Jiraiya snickers into the line. "You two do such inappropriate things in front of your own children? And here I was thinking you stored and locked away all my old Make Out Paradise series out of their reach!"

Naruto ignores the heat rising to his face, he'll have to deal with Boruto's eavesdropping at some other point.

"And the bad news?" He pushes on instead.

Jiraiya pauses for a beat, too long not for both Naruto and Hinata's stomachs to drop like falling rocks.

"So, Danzo...he's still alive."

Naruto, Hinata, & Jiraiya

"Why on Earth is he still alive?! Shouldn't he be like ancient or dust by now y'know?" Naruto bellows angrily.

There's no way Sasuke would've been okay with Danzo still walking about without any repercussions, still breathing knowing how enraged he became once he learned of his connections to the night of his clan's massacre...

He senses various eyes fall upon them and bites his tongue, reels back into his manners. Lessons of etiquette from both the Hyuga Clan and Iruka-sensei flash to mind, lessons that are getting tossed out the window when he lets his emotions take full reign like this.

Boruto squeezes at Hinata's hand, trying and failing at getting them to pick up the pace. "Mama, are you and Papa really feeling better? Toad Grandpa can lead us the rest of the way and you two can go back home to get more sleep or some soup?"

Hinata puts on a smile at his worry, coils entangling about her chest like weeds. They already figured out once that weren't their 'correct' parents in a sense, but that had been when they were just a bit older.

They need to be here today, no matter how complicated the day may become.

Naruto tacks on a grin for their son, cerulean eyes burning back on him with skepticism all is truly well. "We're alright Bolt; I swear! We called ahead that we're running late, so we should be good!"

Jiraiya gives him a disparaging look when he glances back to him that further hushes him, Hinata bumping their shoulders silently telling him to lower his voice as well.

"I didn't say he was in a healthy state Naruto. He's gone completely blind after using up all those extra sharingan eyes he took, or rather Sasuke took back from him at some point. Old infections from prior skirmishes and then the war has left him wheelchair bound. I know from my spies he still has a few loyal followers from the Root Foundation that check in on him regularly. Mostly to clean up his wounds and make sure he's eating properly." He describes quietly.

Hinata's nails dig at her sides, it reminds her of unspoken policies the Hyuga clan does for the Elders, the most precious teas and silks gifted to them during the holidays in honor of their wisdom and experience.

But she's sure they're also the same ones that hid grimaces at her marrying outside the clan to Naruto despite his accomplishments, that the clan no longer is separated between Main and Branch families.

Minutes pass, Jiraiya takes in the wakening markets lit with flickers of pink and yellow rays, sunrise unfurling across Konoha. Smells of sea salt from fish pulled in from the rivers and seas near the Land of Waves mix with the scent of blossoms scattering in the air. Travel merchants pull out racks of fabrics and threads, colorful kimonos shades of blues, greens, and reds, from Kusa to Iwa to promote the coming spring festivals.

"It's not that big of a deal really Naruto. I mean, people are living longer now that the nations are at peace. Less wars and missions means less people dying in combat and more opportunities for lovemaking!" Jiraiya exclaims.

Hinata covers Boruto and Himawari's ears, lilac eyes tinging darker warning him to not head down that subject.

"Anyways, isn't that one Old Fart from Iwa, Onoki or something like pushing 100? Man might live to be 120 with the way technology is moving Kid!" Jiraiya switches gears.

Naruto rolls his eyes. "You're an Old Fart too Pervy-Sage. 70 isn't exactly young."

"Hey 70 is the new 30 or 35 at least! Especially with all these new high-end skincare products and medicinal pills for youth Tsunade always needs to carry along whenever we travel somewhere."

Naruto huffs, looking away. He doesn't want to here about whatever his honorary Godparents get up to when he and Hinata aren't stuck looping or even on an ordinary day.

"You were supposed to deal with Danzo and his associates back on my 10th birthday loop; remember? When you took us to The Lucky Tempest?" He lowers his voice as the Academy comes into view.

Jiraiya frowns. "I did. At least without causing further trouble or suspicion."

Children's giggles mixed with whines fill the air, Himawari's hold tightening on Naruto's legs.

"Maybe I'm not ready yet after all!" She declares.

School is loud, kids and other families glance between her and Papa and instantly see their familial connection, whispering and nodding with awe and curiosity. It's the opposite of everything Uncle Neji and Auntie Hanabi prepared her to deal with over the course of those long winter days indoors.

"You're going to make so many new friends Hima! And learn so much too!" Hanabi beams proudly.

"I want to go to the Rinne Festival." She murmurs in return, pouting when her gaze turns pointed to lemon and turmeric combination tea.

Still as untouched as it was an hour ago when she first brewed it for her.

Himawari wiggles at her toes from beneath her futon, head bouncing with possibilities and all at once it feels like her mind is on fire again while the rest of her bodies trembles akin to ice crackling. Mama and Papa said her flu will be gone before the frost melts, peering to Neji who nods, grin rivaling his cousin's.

"If anyone bullies you for being Naruto's daughter or even just looks at you in an odd way, let us know." He promises.

Naruto pats at her head as she burrows into his knees, getting her attention as he crouches himself to her level.

"Don't worry Hima, you'll have your big brother just around the corner from you!" He assures her.

Azure eyes soften a fraction, nails digging into his arm.

"Okay Papa." Himawari pushes on a small smile.

Footsteps and shadowed faces pass them in a hurry, few lingering to stop in recognition.

"See Kamika? Even the Naruto and Hinata Uzumaki are sending their kids to public school! There's no reason to waste extra ryo on private tutors or homeschooling for Atsushi or Seiichiro." A man hisses to his wife as they head for the registration booth set up just ahead. He smooths out any lingering frizzes in their son's onyx hair, blows out a breath shielding his face from the sun.

Kamika flicks a glance over her shoulder back to them as they move past the gate, tucks amber locks away from her face, sighing.

"It's just those rumors I heard Shuhei-"

Shuhei holds up a hand, refusing to let her finish.

"Now's not the time Dear." He grits out before his voice gets swallowed by the surrounding commotion.

'What rumors?' Hinata bites her lip not to call out after the couple.

Jiraiya blinks, brows scrunching rewinding back to a memory that is over 15 years ago now for him.

He snaps his fingers as it finally comes back.

"Kido, that was his name! He's the guy Danzo put in charge of the Root's finances and treasury, you may even find him swarming around like a fly considering today's occasion."

Hinata lightly scoffs at that. "Would he really be here of all places?"

Jiraiya nods, dark eyes scouring the various groups being broken off.

"The man wouldn't pass up an opportunity to earn ryo, especially when many wealthy couples from outsides regions are enrolling their kids here."

Naruto & Hinata- Academy Grounds

"Naruto and Hinata Uzumaki, I presume?" A woman reviews from her list with a yawn.

Her badge shines with the name Hoshiko, gold star drops earrings to match her namesake dangling with each swish of her head.

At their nods she straightens herself with extra effort, maybe called away to do this task with less available staff around today. Mousey brown hair is marred with streaks of gray, the title Youchien (Kindergarten-Pre K) labeled in pink stitching across her blue vest.

'Should she even be teaching?' Naruto bites his tongue to ask at her bored look.

Most of the other instructors are a lot more...livelier than her.

Himawari's possible homeroom teacher peers between them both slowly and Naruto swears her gaze lingers on him the longest, clarity finally coming into her eyes.

And then a flash of alarm.

Scarlet rims her hazel eyes that she can't fully hide, though whatever exhaustion settling at her sunken cheeks she hurriedly attempts to pats away.

"Oh, I heard you two were coming, though I wasn't sure it was true." She admits with a nervous chuckle.

Hinata perks up, that earlier couple's words flashing to mind.

'You've heard the rumors...'

"Why wouldn't we be? This is the same Academy Naruto and I attended along with our previous classmates and sensei."

Hoshiko flusters, fiddling with her paperwork.

"No reason! I just- well I thought for sure based on both your backgrounds that you'd have your kids attending private academies like Konoha-Jingu Preparatory or Konoha-Mitsui International School. I'm sure all your tuition would've been covered by Lord Sixth or maybe from both your efforts in the war. It wouldn't be the first time."

Naruto frowns at that, implication left in the air.

"There's no reason to go to any fancy school or get unnecessary perks y'know."

Hoshiko's smile tightens, the glue of it seeming to slip.

A man slides into the empty chair beside her, lips scrunched together.

"Looks like we've got a lot of new immigrants from Suna and Iwa, though they're mostly families of civilians. They spent most of their ryo just packing up to come here. I see no reason any guards need to be here if we're not going to recruit any new members out of these parents-"

Hoshiko jabs him in his side and the man's stare follows to Naruto and Hinata.

Kido doesn't remember them from The Lucky Tempest and telling from his breezy expression, he doesn't care who they are or who hears what's on his mind.

"Never mind that! Anyways, yes well, the world is very different now since the war ended for better or worse." Hoshiko supplies quickly.

Naruto raises a brow. "How so?"

Pink burns at Hoshiko's cheeks while Kido lets out a snort of laughter.

"Well for one, you're not locked up in a jail or room somewhere!"

His smile turns sinister. Darker.

It dares him here and now to make a scene.

Hoshiko sends him a glare that could melt steel, gesturing for the pair to ignore him.

"Follow me, we'll get you guys started on all the necessary paperwork along with what Himawari's daily schedules will be like."

Naruto and Hinata hesitate, Himawari tugging at their legs.

"I don't think she likes me!" She hisses in dismay.

Hinata squeezes her close, can hear the tiny drum of her heartbeat on her leg.

"It's not you, she's probably just having a bad or is tired." She assures her and partially herself.

Naruto places a hand on the small of her back hugging her close shoulder to shoulder. An invisible shield for his wife and daughter from these eavesdroppers.

"Please don't mind Kido! He's been volunteering and taking odd jobs here and there since The Fourth Shinobi World War. He used to earn more income under Danzo and Root until it was-"

"Disbanded?" Hinata finishes.

Hoshiko nods stiffly, clearing her throat.

"Yes, quite hastily too by Lord Sixth I feel. Danzo, before he retired actually did quite a bit for the school! He's created various scholarships, training exercises from his war days, and donated to the art and music departments."

Naruto bites his tongue until the taste of copper comes, shifting Himawari closer.

'So she's a Root sympathizer.'

Just how many are working here now of all places? ANBU would probably find teaching boring he imagines, nothing fast-paced or thrilling about teaching basic rescue operations or going through D and C-rank missions.

Hinata's eyes narrow, nodding discreetly to Naruto her concerns as well.

How many could have ulterior motives?

Naruto & Hinata- Class 2-B

'He isn't saying anything I don't already know. Sorry Kid.'

Naruto reads Jiraiya's text twice over before sighing. Kido doesn't have anymore important information on the time device, Kabuto hasn't shown up here if he's even going to.

And the main event so to speak, Danzo, is probably not in a well enough state for travel.

Himawari wiggles in his arms while flipping at her stuffed panda's ears, unsure whether to stay in his lap or take a seat beside them while they finish reviewing over the itinerary for Boruto's school year now.

'Don't cause a scene flirting with the other teachers here.' Naruto types out.

Jiraiya's next text follows in an instant.

'Tsunade would put me in the hospital or morgue if I did so. I'm just...window shopping right now!'

Naruto lowly chuckles.

Danzo alive.

Sai's seal intact.

"Once he kicks the bucket I'll be free of him since I can't waltz into his private villa and murder him. It would be an unfortunate end via drowning by ink or suffocation maybe. Until then though..."

Naruto peers over to Inojin and Boruto, exchanging Kamen Ninja cards and discussing which new students will be in their class this year.

Hopefully not listening to this.

Ino swats at his shoulder. "Dear, stop talking like that!"

Danzo must be in his late 80s or 90s now, his influence still clings on to the village somehow either via the old generation like Hoshiko or those interested in his ideals.

"Do you all have any questions?" Mr. Koizumi asks forcing him to focus on here and now.

'Yes, it would be nice to know why we keep time looping y'know!' Naruto bemoans.

Boruto raises a hand.

"Are Inojin and Shikadai going to be in my class y'know?!"

Koizumi grins, nodding.

"Of course! We like to keep peers closely together as often as possible. It makes for smoother sessions during teamwork building exercises. Though of course there may come times when you'll be split up if only to make the classes more evenly balanced and make sure you interact with a wide variety of people."

"How will this curriculum be different from years past?" Hinata asks.

Koizumi beams, prepared for this question. "We've come to see that not every student needs to go down the military/shinobi path like back in your age and even my age! We have more classes that focus on if a child is interested in music, arts, business, medicine, travel, etc. That's not to say if a student still wants to be a shinobi that they can't go through the Sublevel ANBU curriculum or new secondary Root-Based-"

"Root-Based?" Hinata cuts him off.

Koizumi nods, smile fading slightly. "Yes, it was actually thought of by a retired ANBU member..."

He stops himself at Hinata's expression and quickly she hides as her nails tear half-moons into her palms.

Relax. Focus.

'Retired in what sense? Danzo always operated from the shadows and in his old age he'll need a new generation to rise up to match his ideals.'

Or children to use for his own continued power.

Her stomach knots, heartbeat steadily rising like a buzz in her ears.

Naruto pats at her hand and Hinata calms her breathing, reviews with him Boruto's class roster, a mix of clan names new and old.

'A lot of Konoha's old clans like Nara, Aburame, Inuzuka, and Yamanaka are altogether in one class.' He reads.

It's not really uncommon considering that's how things were for he and Hinata as well during their Academy days as well, but there's a lot more immigrants and civilian families in Konoha now.

He can't be sure if it's on purpose or just a coincidence.

Boruto nods in understanding excitedly, Hinata taking in the row of certificates and photos behind Koizumi.

Like Jiraiya, he's a man well traveled across the nations.

Koizumi follows her line of sight, straightening proudly.

"Ah, those are from my younger years! Don't have as much energy as I did then for exploring the lush waterfalls of Kusa and the stone mountains of Iwa!"

Hinata points to a man he's shaking hands with, grin eerily familiar.

A young Katasuke Tōno gleams back at them.

And on his right, a man that unmistakably looks like Danzo.

"And he's-?" She begins softly.

Koizumi's grin softens just slightly.

"Just an old friend from my undergrad days; more of an adventurer than me really! He had a knack for finding hidden away marketplaces selling exotic weapons, scrolls that discussed skills and trades from years past, people that tested the boundaries of science and time."

"Illegal testing?" Naruto can't help but ask earning him a light kick to the ankle from Hinata.

Koizumi coughs, hurriedly shaking his head.

"No, No! Nothing like that! Tōno respected the unspoken boundaries of tampering with science's darker sides. He would never stoop to such measures that would get him discredited and his accolades taken away!"

Though his tone is more of nostalgia than revulsion, a longing for memories and a time that no longer exists...

The room goes quiet, Koizumi moving to stand after compiling together Boruto's welcome folder.

"Well, shall I show you all the classrooms then?"

Naruto & Hinata- Uzumaki Household

"There's a lot of people who don't see Danzo as evil." Naruto regards as he flips through their notes.

"And it isn't just people from around his age. There are parents that feel Root served as good bodyguards for Konoha from the shadows, that it now being weakened and basically abandoned puts Konoha more at risk for future skirmishes or attacks by rogue shinobi." Hinata mentions with a sigh, summarizing updates and opinions she got from various parents throughout each grade level.

Naruto rubs his chin thoughtfully, he still isn't sure why Sasuke or even Obito didn't kill Danzo, even with the changes he and Hinata have made in the past, do that many people like Danzo enough to protect him from the Uchiha clan's wrath?

'There was hardly any mention of Danzo during my inauguration ceremony loop. That must mean he's going to die sometime in the next few years.' He figures.

Perhaps during their late teen years he truly went into hiding, biding his time knowing he wouldn't win against Sasuke or Obito in a one on one fight?

Its possible he got more body modifications and enhancements via Kabuto.

Or maybe he wrong, it all depends on whichever age they wake up tomorrow.

Evening sun spills against his office desk shining it in brilliant hues of reds and yellows. The day has already gotten away from them. Hinata moves to shut the window, cool breeze scattering petals along the sill.

"If we're not in the same place tomorrow, then I plan to go to the Academy to look at people they've hired, list of past and current Root/ANBU members. One of them will know where Danzo is residing." She decides aloud, turning back to face him.

They know at least Katasuke Tōno at some point met with Danzo during his undergraduate/research days. Kickstarted his interest in looking into time and space devices which he took with him back to Konoha.

And then he must've met with Kabuto and even maybe Orochimaru who provided him with additional advice or details that he told Danzo of periodically...

Naruto circles and crosses out names, rubbing grit from his eyes when the words and number start to blur.

He has to remember this, has to know where he and Hinata left off should they not wake in the same place.

"Naruto, don't overdo it. You don't want to go to bed with a headache." Hinata gently warns, hands resting at his shoulders. She drops a light kiss to his neck and his muscles slowly unwind, blue to lilac watching each other.

"I'm tired." He admits.

"I know; I am too." Hinata sighs, leaning into him as Naruto pulls her to his lap.

A knock at the door startles them both, Naruto peering up to see twin cobalt eyes watching them.

"Papa, no more reading! Come play with us!" Boruto orders, pushing open the door wider when he sees neither are actually working.

"Yes, playtime! Himawari readily scampers in after him, pair climbing up their legs.

"We all can't fit in this chair y'know!" Naruto remarks, adjusting Hinata as Boruto and Himawari squeeze onto his opposite leg. The chair squeals from the pressure, spinning them until his mind is focused more on the kid's giggles than the coils and stuffing about to burst from the seat.

Boruto nuzzles into his chest. "Tomorrow, let's have Hamburg steak and fries for breakfast!"

Naruto shakes his head, he keeps trying to break rules no matter his age. "That's too much salt in the morning."

"So is ramen!" He counters back.

Hinata grins. "He has a point Dear."

Naruto huffs, twirls them counterclockwise, tickles at all three.

"I' won't stop spinning us until we say Ramen is better!"

Night has to wait, can't come when these moments he and Hinata get with the kids are so few and far between. They smell like the grass and dirt from outside, probably tracked mud into the house another version of themselves will have to deal with tomorrow.

Eventually, Himawari lightly asks to get down and Boruto between yawns asks for a story from a mission he had when he was his age.

"I never had any missions when I was 7." Naruto chuckles as he tucks him in.

Boruto shakes his head, drowsy and battling sleep the way he has so many nights before too.

"Yeah you have Papa! You and Mama tell Hima and I so many stories y'know."

Naruto laughs gently, the best he can give him is a D-rank mission he took of locating a lost dog.

"Everyone asleep?" Hinata asks into his chest.

"Everyone asleep." Naruto confirms. mind whirling with the last things their son said before he fully drifted off.

'No no that one! I know a good one Papa! Tell me about how you won the war!'

Naruto- Age 17

His mouth tastes like sandpaper.

That and a metallic tang that can only be dried blood.

Hinata doesn't stir from his movement so he must be alone, cracking his eyes open.

Peeks of yellow stretch across his old apartment wall, sitting up slowly. He's not so young that he's wearing his old gray pajamas, but not so old that he's wearing one of the white t-shirts and sweatpants.

In his window's reflection he sees his teenage self; tired.

"Water." He grunts, throwing an arm out of his sheets towards his bedside table.

'I keep a canteen or water bottle always there.' He knows.

A hand catches his just as his fingers brush at the plastic container.

"About time you awoke Nine Tails." The man scoffs, voice cool and assessing.

Naruto bristles, instantly leaps back gathering wind in his palm.

Danzo merely smiles at the rasengan, steps forward casually.

Naruto takes him in, usual wrinkles and bandages gone, spark of energy in his dark eyes he's never seen before except for in old pictures.

"Ah, those reflexes. Maybe I've finally caught one of you on a time loop day after all."

I've been wanting to add more of the villain's presence to the story so that's coming in now! I don't mean to confuse people last chapter, no Boruto and Himawari aren't twins, they're still two years apart like in canon!

Most of Naruto and Hinata's freaking out when they woke up to this day is because it's a day they haven't lived through yet. They can't predict exactly how one conversation could drastically affect the past or future.
