Hi, so here is another Chicago PD story and I am so excited to bring you thins one, this one takes me to a world post Erin, to Season 5 and this is a new thing for me so I hope that you enjoy. Also this delves a little into the Al/Adam relationship that I have enjoyed so much and like the Jay/Hank relationship is often ignored.

This story takes place around the break that happened in Season 5 when Adam's duel role was discovered, I can confirm that Hank and Al are not the enemies in this story. I think we all know who the enemy in Season 5 was.

This story does deal with upsetting themes including murder, rape and child abuse and PTSD flashbacks. If this TRIGGERS YOU THEN PLEASE STOP NOW!.

Pairings are as follows, Kim/Adam, Hailey/Jay, Will/Conner (briefly) and Al/Meredith.

Just to confirm that Lexie is dead in this story as well.

Disclaimer-Nothing here but Vicky is mine.

This story is AU as well but does stretch over Season 5 and Season 5 alone.

Please Read and Review and I will update as soon as I can.

And on a side note, I like so many other Fanfiction Authors no longer receive notifications via email about reviews/PMs etc. So if you do send any it might be a while, if ever before I get back to you. Please keep that in mind for it is not intentional-If anyone has a fix please let me know.

I have also stopped taking any kind of personal messages, any questions please leave them in a review and I will get back to them in the next chapter note. This chapter should be about twenty-twenty five chapters.

AND TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR THIS CHAPTER AND DISCUSSION OF RAPE. PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND.

The Spirit That I Have Seen

Chapter 17-The Man In The Box

Woods ends up in the box as Adam finally, finally learns the truth. But that's only part of the story. Jay gives Dante some advice.

"You okay kid?"

"Epic"

Jay snorted. The kid was like him combined with Erin at fifteen. Like they had, had a kid and here he was as a teenager all shaved head and tattoos and barbed wire.

"Okay"

He passed the kid the bottle of water and Dante (which was all they had gotten out of him) took it cracked it open with his teeth and had a long mouthful before he could stop himself. He watched Jay wearily and Jay watched him and then.

"Could I get a vodka?"

"Dream on kid"

Dante shrugged and then.

"She gonna be okay? Vicky?"

"She's fine. Kim's with her and she's good with Kim, so is Hayley."

"Hayley the one who got decked by that cop?"

"Yep"

Dante spat on the floor. "I hate scum who hit woman"

"Amen to that brother"

He got a flash of a look from the kid and he grinned.

"What?"

"Nothing. You want some advice?"

"Not from a fucking cop"

"Shame, I was gonna tell you you'd be good at this"

The kid choked on the water.

"What?"

"This…cop. You'd be a good one."

"Mate I aint being funny but I am heading to Juvie."

Jay said nothing. Between him, Adam, Al and Voight if the kid went into the system he would be amazed.

Already he was typing up the email.

Dante drank the water and said nothing.

Jay wondered how hard it would be to get the kid to accept a burger.

God knows with him it had never been hard.

Adam was sat on the floor.

Al watched him and then decided to fuck it. The wear and tear was worth it on his knees.

"Adam?"

"Yeah"

"I'm going to come and sit next to you okay"

"I'm not broken Al. I'm not having some kind of breakdown. I just don't want to watch"

"Well I'm going to sit down anyway"

Adam said nothing he just stared at his knees.

So he sat down.

Hank stood at the doorway watching them.

"Your not going in there boss?"

"I want this to stick Adam and me in there isn't going to help. Antonio and Hayley are the best for this. I go in there I am going to kill him and he'll wiggle out of it. He's wiggled out of stuff before and I don't want that to happen with this"

Adam nodded looking back at his knees.

Despite the fact that he didn't want to he found that he was listening in and though he didn't want to he found that he still couldn't remember. He didn't know why that bothered him. He didn't want to remember, he really, really did not want to remember and yet here he was bothered by it. It was annoying and irritating and confusing all at the same time.

"So" Hayley began her voice that cold and professional way that Adam had learnt was Hayley on the brink. Following Voight into the room was Kevin but Adam couldn't meet his eyes. Jay he knew was still with the kid that had saved Vicky but Kevin's hand was on his shoulder and he leaned into Al's closing his eyes and wishing that he could close his ears as the words managed to permanent the protection that was his brain.

"It wasn't like it was planned" Woods began.

"Liar" that was Antonio. "We know you hired a contractor from Clearwater Securities, We know about the account in your wife's name, we know about it all. And I reckon if we ran Adam Ruzek's rape kit we would find a match to you"

Adam flinched. Al tightened his grip on his arm and Kevin' tightened his grip on his shoulder. He didn't dare look up. He didn't know what was going on. He didn't want to look at Hank Voight and see what was going on.

There was a pause and he thought he was going to be sick. He didn't know if it was better or worse that he found out that Woods had done…that to him. He didn't know. He didn't know if he wanted to sit in a courtroom and let his life be dictated like that by twelve strangers.

Fuck. He was never again going to judge a special victim for as long as he lived. He was never going to push one to go to trial just so he could make his case ever again.

"All that will show is the boy likes it at both ends. Unsurprising considering his mother had a reputation for every cop who looked at her twice. I suppose Al and Hank are both listening…believe me they had options with Sophie too"

Adam turned to Al who shook his head patting him on the shoulder.

"Nah" he said easily. "Never looked at anyone since I clapped eyes on Meredith"

Unspoken he jerked his head up to Hank Voight who didn't even look at him.

"Son if I had even looked my wife would have lopped off my bollocks, spray painted them gold, dipped em in glitter and given them to the Widows and Orphans fund as Christmas donations."

There was a pause and then Kevin whistled.

"Damn I wish we could have met your wife" he muttered under his breath and Adam privately agreed.

In doing so he drowned out the rest of the interrogation somewhat and for that Adam was glad. He didn't want to listen to it. He didn't want to hear what had been done to him. Instead he turned up to Voight and looked at him and said very carefully,

"Boss do I need to be here?"

Voight actually turned to look at him then surprise on his face.

"You don't want to listen to the confession?"

Adam shook his head. "I don't think I should" he said feeling slightly sick. "I think I just want to get Vicky home or back to Al's or…just away. I need to shower and sleep and I need…I need to sleep" he said again finishing lamely. "I just need to shower and I need to sleep"

"Okay" Voight said looking at him oddly. "But Adam I do need you to come back at some point. If we break Woods and believe you me one way or another we will break him, then I need you to be prepared for what that means…I need you to come and work on a statement, I need to get you in front of a DA for court—"

"COURT?!"

It came out somewhere between a panicked shriek and a sob and he could have kicked himself for it because it was the one thing that he did not want to show to these two men (Kevin didn't count—Kevin had been the one who had forced him into the shower when Kim had left him and he had fallen head first into a vodka bottle to the point where he had thought Kevin was Magic Johnson)

"Yes" Voight said in that tone that he saved for victims that had been thrashed within an inch of their life and who had no connection to the perps who had done the deed. "Yes Adam, court. We are going to put Woods away for a long time where he won't hurt you or Vicky or anyone else."

Adam felt the fear in the air, he felt like was seeping out of his pores and drowning him. He could taste it in the air, he could feel himself sweat with it and he wondered if he was the only one who could feel it too.

"Oh" he said quietly. "Is that I mean…is it wise?"

"Wise?"

"I mean…he's put a lot of guys away over the years boss, a lot of guys who deserve it and shouldn't we…I mean shouldn't they stay in prison, you know what happens when a cop goes inside all of his perps come out"

"Mine didn't"

"That's different" Kevin said with an eyeroll. He was there at Adam's side, his partner like Al was…no that wasn't right Al was so much more than his partner, Al right now was his fucking father and Adam wanted to keep that for as long as he was allowed to.

Voight looked from the two of them as if he was trying to see something that wasn't there and Adam didn't know how to tell these two men who were the harbingers of justice in Chicago by any means necessary that the thought of going into a courtroom and staring down Denny Woods was enough to make his whole body revolt in terror.

And that was before Vicky…

Oh God Vicky.

"Does Vicky have too—"

"I don't know" Voight said in that measured way. "But she might have too Adam if it's the only way that we can get the bastard behind bars"

He nodded. He was barely seeing what was in front of him at the moment never mind strong enough to listen into the interrogation.

"Can I take her home?"

"Yeah" Voight said. "I'll grab Kim, you want me to—"

"Kev can you—"

"Sure I'll drive you if you don't need me boss?"

"Nah"

"Meredith's out" Al said softly passing Kevin his keys. "Stay in the house until we call you okay"

"Sure"

Adam got to his feet and managed a look at Woods. Despite the fact that it was a pane of glass that would not allow Woods to see him Woods at that moment chose to look at the window as if he knew that Adam was there. He looked him dead in the eye and then he winked.

Adam flinched backwards scrambling back into the warm expanse of Kevin's chest feeling sick. Al was suddenly there blocking the view and he tore his eyes downwards to his shoes for a second.

"Ruz?"

"Kev I wanna go, I wanna go, I…"

"Okay bro" Kevin said softly. "Okay. We'll go at your own pace okay. You tell me when you are ready and we'll go, we'll grab Vicky and…suppose be better take Dante as well and we can go and watch some Harry Potter and eat some pizza"

"Leave Dante" Al said quietly. "Jay can handle Dante, I get the impression Jay actually wants to handle Dante so…"

Kev's hands were firm on his shoulder and so Adam left. He got out into the corridor and then he bolted down the side stairs and outside as fast as his bad knee could take him. It went on him a couple of times as he slammed into the door and he felt the wind of fresh cold Chicago winter air on his face and he vomited all over the ground.

Kevin swore softly and then rubbed his back and Adam turned to his friend and burrowed his face in his grey sports jumper despite the fact that he was surely going to get it covered in vomit and Kevin to his credit did not care.

"I can't" he said quietly into the warmth of the fabric. "I can't do it Kev, I can't…he's gonna tell everyone I betrayed Voight and that I asked for it and no cop is gonna look at me the same and then they are gonna take Vicky and…"

"Aw Ruz mate no."

"Kevin I can't do it I don't want to do it, please don't make me testify"

Kevin breathed in and breathed out and then he forced Adam's head back and forced him to look at him.

"Here is what's gonna happen" he said quietly. "You are going to come home with me to Al's with Vicky, we are going to eat pizza and ice cream and watch Harry Potter because Jordan found out that Vicky has never watched Harry Potter and he thought it was a crime against humanity so we are going to do that. And you don't have to do anything you don't want to. But tonight we are not going to think about a trial in the distant future okay? Can you do that?"

He nodded and Kev gripped his shoulder once. "I'm gonna go and get Kim" he said.

"Can she come too?"

"Sure" Kevin said with a smile. "Come on. Let's get your girl and go"

Adam nodded and he breathed in and he breathed out.

Kevin didn't ask him to go upstairs again. Kim came down to meet them.

Of that he was eternally relieved.

"I don't want this to go to trial"

"I know"

"Hank he won't cope"

"I know"

"He's clinging on by the skin of his teeth you get him in a courtroom he is gonna collapse"

"Al I know all of this."

"Then why the hell aren't we handing this in the normal way?"

Hank turned to look at him flipping off the interrogation intercom.

"Aside from the fact that the last time we handed things that way you couldn't look me in the eye for a month and it nearly cost you your marriage? Aside from the fact that the time we came close to that I had to buy Jay his weight in scotch and actually start to care about the kid—"

"Aw boss your all heart" came a voice from the doorway and they both turned to see Jay stood there.

"Dante's case worker arrived and low and behold it was to tell the kid that his sentenced had been reduced. So long as he stayed with a respected member of the community the charges would be dropped. Kid was kinda stunned—"

"Let me guess you're the member of the community?"

Jay shrugged. Al was totally unsurprised. He knew Jay well…soft spots for kids was par for the course with anyone who could have been Hank's son and Jay could have been Hank's son. Actually a part of him like with Erin wanted to discreetly do a DNA test but then again…they had enough to contend with at the moment.

"Enough of this" Hank said venomously. He rapped his knuckles on the glass and Hayley was on her feet.

"Honey mineral water too will you?"

"Honey" Hayley said turning around and staring down at Woods with a glare that would have made Meredith and Camille very, very proud.

"If you call me that again you piece of shit I will whip your balls off and stick em in a blender and force you to drink it"

Jay laughed, Antionio laughed. Al grinned. Hank looked pleased.

Hayley came out into the corridor.

"Ugh" she said shaking her whole body. "When we get this piece of shit behind bars I need a scotch and a shower. A long, hot shower in which I stand totally under the spray naked and forget that men like that are real and I remember that I willing chose to put them behind bars.

"Jay get a hold of yourself" Al muttered because Jay's eyes had glazed over the second that he had been presented with the image of Hayley under a shower—God he hoped Meredith and he were not that bad when they were—

"AL"

They all froze. It was Woods and he was screaming at the interrogation window.

Antonio shot them a look clearly at a loss of what to do.

"AL GET YOUR ASS IN HERE AND I WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING, YOU AND ONLY YOU MAN, GET YOUR ASS IN HERE AND I WILL TELL YOU WHAT THE LOOK ON HIS FACE WAS LIKE WHEN HE REALSIED THAT YOU HATED HIM SO MUCH YOU WERE GOING TO LET HIM DIE. CAUSE I REMEMBER AL, I REMEMBER IT ALL—"

He was in the room and Antonio was out of the room before anyone could blink and he slammed the door shut and the six months that came with the agony of not knowing was almost over and he knew that the rage that he had felt when he had held his dying partner's body in his arms and begged him to wake up was simmering again below the surface.

This time though, he suspected that Meredith would forgive him.

And yeah, I had to bring a young Dante into it. I just...I really like his character, I think he is fantastic, I was so glad that they got him to sign up for Season 10 cause he was and is brilliant.

I will bring you the next one as soon as I can.

Next Chapter-Al and Woods have a reckoning. Hank tries very hard not to send the man to the docks.
