Breakfast was a simple affair near the poolside. I had to change out of my wet clothing once it was over, along with a quick shower to get the chlorine smell out of my hair. Let's just say, centuries of swimming in the chemical free Nile has me a bit spoiled when it came to swimming in any body of water. I smiled softly as I started changing into some dry clothing. For some reason, the crocodiles happened to be smarter than the hippos, but that was a story for another day. Let's just say that I had a restraining order against Tawaret for the next few centuries so I wouldn't have to worry about the vengeful goddess trying to track me down while I was in the middle of an investigation. Good thing she was banned from going near China. The Monkey King, the Jade Emperor and Dizang were not amused by the ensuing conflict that resulted in the current dynasty at the time being overthrown by peasants leading to a decade of bloody civil war. I leaned against the expensive looking cabinet that was in my room and took a deep breath. How many lives were lost because of that idiot's actions? How many fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters lost their lives as a result of my negligence in thinking that I could handle her?
I was no stranger to bloodshed and death, yet those deaths hit me harder than the ones I had caused directly by my own hands. Apophis cultists were a menace and must be stopped at all cost. Still, their lives were thrown away for no reason unlike the bloodshed that I caused during my little hunt. If I had to kill a village to save the world, I would do it. I had already done it before against Scion. As long as their deaths would not be in vain, I would be content. I stared at the mirror, my plushie of Atlas glaring holes into the back of my head from its position on my bed. Slowly walking up to my bed, I gave the Atlas plushie a hug and gently placed him back in his spot. Amun-Ra had him made for me as a gift.
"Hold down the fort for me while I'm gone." I gave the Atlas plushie a small smile and raised one of his scythed limbs in a mock salute. Grabbing a jacket that matched the rest of my outfit, I walked to my nightstand which held my Weaver mask. I probably should have worn this one to the party instead of the Skitter one, but it was too late now to worry about it. Carefully putting it on, I walked out of my hotel room to meet up with Thoth and Anubis before they left.
Hopefully Tawaret wouldn't try showing up here after Amun-Ra gave her a stern talking to about causing an international incident that needed to be covered up. Even I wasnt that stupid to do that. Well, not publicly with any witnesses.
Only Tawaret or Loki showing up would turn this mission into a nightmare. An exaggeration, but completely true. Set and his followers was still at large causing havoc behind the scenes, and Apophis wanted to bring about the end of the world. All in a day's work. Using my bugs, I avoided running into the other guests that were staying here as well as the workers. For all I knew, they could be spies sent by Apophis to try and distract me while they cover up their tracks.
Silently entering the elevator, my bugs detected a group of chattering nymphs slowly approaching me. Oh no. I pressed the close button to the side, but the elevator did nothing. They were starting to get closer. Violently pressing the button over and over, the doors slowly started to close as soon as they entered view. Thankfully the door closed shut right as one of them opened her mouth, probably to ask me to wait for them. I did not want to be stuck in a small elevator with a bunch of hormonal nymphs with revealing clothing. Who knows what would have happened on the way down? Letting out a sigh of relief, I leaned against the side of the elevator.
Suddenly, a small cough interrupted the silence. Looking down, a small blue attendant with wings was staring me down and pointed to the elevator control board.
"Oh uh, the first floor please." I said as I fished out a gem in the shape of a scarab and handed it to the attendant who bit it softly. Nodding slowly, she pressed a button and the elevator started to move in silence.
It seemed that the first part of my investigation might have to take place in the Underworld. Mount Olympus seemed cleaned, but that meant that the scum here moved behind closed doors. Speaking of scum, it looked like Hades finally decided to kidnap Persephone if that tabloid meant anything. Of course some type of photoshop might have been used, but anything was possible. Persephone and Hades seemed to have been having a normal conversation which was good. It meant that she liked him at the very least, and at least they weren't related here.
Ancient people seemed to have liked their incest a lot. Eventually, the elevator doors opened and I walked out without giving the attendant another glance. Ignoring the stares that were sent my way, I walked up to Thoth and Anubis who were both playing some game on their phones. Thoth always dressed to impress, with an impeccable black business suit with matching shoes. Anubis was dressed a bit more casually with a hoodie and blazer combo that he seemed to favor.
"Khepri!" Anubis said enthusiastically without looking up from his phone. He tapped the screen violently before sighing. "Damn it Thot!"
"What?" Thoth responded casually as he turned his phone's screen off and placed it in one of his pockets. The two stared at each other for a few seconds before Anubis sighed again.
"Never mind."
Thoth smirked at that before turning his attention to me. "Sit down my friend. Anubis and I have some time before we have to go to the ribbon cutting ceremony." Taking the seat next to him, Anubis formed his signature grin.
"Yup. I even brought my own scissors." Anubis pulled out an extremely large scissor from his blazer's pocket that was comically too large.
"Put that away before you cut someone you imbecile!" Thoth glared at Anubis who shrugged and placed it back in his pocket.
"So what are you planning on doing while we're gone?" Anubis asked as he leaned back on the couch he was sitting on.
"Hm, I suppose I'll explore the city. Maybe visit the Underworld. I want to see how it compares to the Land of the Dead." I said casually. Thoth nodded along as I spoke.
"Sounds fun. Just try not to kill or seriously maim anyone." Anubis muttered that last bit under his breath. I gave him a grin that mirrored his own.
"Who, me? I would never…"
No promises old friend.
