Sparrow looked at the tombstone sculpture of the hero Pilgrim looking at details of the cut marble. The statue was of Pilgrim standing tall, both of his hands gently resting on a long and large blade that was almost the same height as him; and all the while a wide smile accompanied his long beard, staring out into the horizon of ocean near the coastal beach of Oakvale which now was nothing more than a large cliffside.
The statue itself seemed eerie to him due to how much it actually looked like the old man himself. If it wasn't for the greyish white color of the stone marble or the weeds and vegetation that grow around the statue, he could believe it was the smiling oldie.
It's been so long since Sparrow seen Pilgrim when he was a child. He had followed in Pilgrim's footsteps, he soon understood the responsibilities of being hero as Pilgrim told him, of the good he can do for others, of the difficulties that can affect a hero but so far Sparrow has yet to have a problem that affective his life too much but he has always try to be weary of the people he trust and make friends with but always also seems help others before thinking of the dangers that may come to him in doing so.
Whenever Sparrow was going through a hard time or seemed to not be sure in himself of being a hero, or if he did the right thing or not, he would think of words that Pilgrim spoke to him that always put the young man at ease or give him the power to keep pushing forward even in the bleakness of times. To believe in himself as Pilgrim did in him, he learned to trust his instincts in fights and trust his gut with others that he met in his travels.
He has also become as famous as a hero as Pilgrim was at his age, the common people love him and always run over to him to show their gratitude and love for the hero or children that wanted a autograph from him(which he always seemed to not a lot of plain of piece of paper to do even if he wanted to). He enjoys the attention that he gets and is willing to talk to them if he has the time to do so, he had found amusement seeing some people in awe of him when they saw his full gear of guns and swords.
But one thing that he tries to make sure is that he doesn't let all of it go to his head, to try and stay humble when he can, to not think that he is someone more important than anyone else. He himself was nothing more than a scrounger and a beggar of the streets of Bowerstone when he was just a boy with his sister Rose, he knows what selfishness and self-absorbance can do to a person if they let their fame and power define themselves.
As Sparrow kept staring at the statue of Pilgrim, he wondered what the old hero would think of him now. Would he be proud of Sparrow? Would he think that Sparrow has done as much good as he did? Was Sparrow a real hero like him, or just a pretender with a dull blade that believed he was making any real differences at all?
Sparrow sighed heavily as he turned his head to the side to look away from the look of Pilgrim's statue. He guessed it didn't matter anyways, their just stupid worries that his mind try to fill his head with. He knew in his own way that he was doing what was right, that he was a real hero, that he was making difference if it was big as saving all of Albion from stopping Lucien's pains of making his wish to make himself God and remake the world the world his own thought and image, or if it was helping a son tell his father of his opposite taste of love.
Then he thought of Rose, what would she think of him? Maybe she would be happy to see her little sparrow to see him grow up as the strong and respectable man he was, then he thought she would be horrified by all the danger that he dealt with on a daily basis when doing hero work. He chuckled to himself to think of the concerned looks she would give him but still try to support him and the choices that he did.
He then began to wonder what it would been like if Rose got to see his family, to meet his wife Sarah who he saw as the most beautiful woman in all of Albion, to see her long dark brown hair with bright green eyes that makes her smile seem even brighter than any of the green plains of Oakfield, he thinks that Rose would agree with him if she saw her; he first met Sarah when he walked into "Bit of Skirt and Pants!" to get some new clothes when he saw her at the front counter waiting next the cash register, and when he set his eyes on her and saw her smile, he knew that he fallen for her and after coming back to the tailor shop whenever he had some time to relax and visit to see her, she told him she felt the same way about him they decided to get married and bought a house at the end of top street that looks over all of Old Town Bowerstone.
Then there was his baby daughter Mary, who was just born about a week ago. He was luckily to there when she was born at his and Sarah's home, he felt so proud to be father as he looked down at his sleeping baby and to have Sarah as his daughter's mother which he knew she would be a good mother, she's naturally great with children and loves to be around them.
Mary has her father's light brown hair but has her mother's green eyes and small flat nose. She barely cries or makes any fuss unlike most babies but she is ever upset, Sparrow tries to get her attention then makes a bunch of unusual and funny faces to her which always seem to make her laugh and giggle; no matter how many times she saw it before, it just made her smile to see it. Sarah would always tell him that Mary seems to just adore her daddy more than anything when the baby laughs at him.
When Sparrow returned from the Arena and back to Bowerstone, he told Sarah that he had to go to The Spire and that he didn't know how long he would be gone for, she immediately was worried. She asked him if he really had to go, maybe Hammer could go in his stead, or maybe he can pay some mercenaries to scout it out, or just anything else instead of him leaving.
"I have to go myself Sarah, no one else can do this." Sparrow told Sarah with a bitter tone to his voice.
"Sparrow you can't go, no one has ever returned from the Spire and we can't lose you, not now!" She cried distressingly, "We need you here Sparrow, Mary needs her father, she needs you in her life...she can't lose her father before she knows him," her voice deepened on the last part, breaking with emotions filling up in her as she continued.
"I need my husband here, I can't lose the love of my life already…...I just can't.." her voice starting cracking more as tears fell on her cheeks, putting her hands over her eyes, slowly falling to her knees on the hardwood floor.
Sparrow came to her side after a moment of silence between each other, he slides his hands on her hips as he slowly guided her to stand up again. With his right hand he gently removes her's from her face to reveal tears streaming down her cheeks and pink puffy skin around her bright green eyes, his heart ached to see her like this to know he is the reason for her worries and pains.
"I won't die there, I will come back to you and Mary. I love you too much to die," his voice was calm and had a kind feeling to it to try to be reassuring, but Sarah didn't fade as she looked away from Sparrow.
He puts a finger under her chin and slowly raises her head to face him again, a caring smile appearing on his face as he talks in the same calm voice again. "I promise you I'll come back to you two, there is nothing that will stop me from seeing you again," his right hand gently cuping one of her cheeks, wiping some tears away with his thumb as Sarah embraces his touch.
"I know you will Sparrow," she tells him softly, "I just worry about you, what if you don't come back for years, what will Mary do without her father here?"
"Well Hammer will visit from time to time to check on you and Mary and to give you some company, I've also asked the Sheriff to have more men to have more routes to our street everyday and night until I return."
Sarah looks into Sparrow's eyes for a moment, trying to find any sense of doubt in him that she can see. But She couldn't see anything except the love and passion behind his eyes that came with a warm smile accompanying them. She couldn't help but smile back as well before giving him a soft kiss on his lips, as he soon returned the favor.
"I'll miss you," She whispered, as if she was trying to keep a secret that only Sparrow could know. "Just at least stay here for tonight before you go...please"
"I will, my love." he whispered back before giving her a soft kiss, smiling against her lips as their kisses became more passionate and longer, wanting to savor every moment they had with each other.
Before he left the house Sparrow went to his daughter's crib to see her before he went off. She was peacefully asleep as she held onto her stuffed bear that one eye that was missing on the left and had a tiny wooden sword sewed onto it's right arm, Sparrow softly touched her small hand with his finger as she grabbed onto it.
Before all of this, Sparrow didn't have much reason in life other than to get revenge on Lucien and save all of Albion from his terror but he never thought of what he would do after or what other purpose there was to his life. Now he has a family, daughter to raise, a family to grow and feed, to protect, and to love with all of his being. Mary being now his biggest reason for living, to stop Lucien's plan, she was the new bright light in this dark world for him.
He leaned over the railing of the crib, placing a small kiss on top of Mary's small head, "Daddy loves you my little princess, I always will." He said in the faintest of whispers as to not wake her up. He then pulled his finger out of her grasp before quietly walking down stairs to the front door.
Now he stood here, still looking at the statue of Pilgrim, only a few more miles left before he's at the docks of Westcliff where Hammer would be waiting for him to send him off to The Spire.
Suddenly he felt something wet touch his hand, after looking behind him he found it was his loyal dog companion Furface sniffing his hand as he wagged his tail.
"Oh there you are Furface, sorry that I wandered off for a bit," a friendly smile appears on Sparrow's face as he pets his hairy friend on the head, Furface bark as a response to Sparrow which gets a chuckle out of Sparrow.
"Well let's get going, we need to meet Hammer at the docks before sun down," Furface barks again saying that he agreed and started walking back towards the trail leading out of Oakvale. Sparrow following behind him walking out the graveyard.
"You done good Little Sparrow" a faint voice called out behind Sparrow that cause the hairs on the back of his neck to stand up. He quickly flipped around to find the source of voice, but instead all he saw was large spiked vines and bushes covering the area of where the graveyard used to be. His mouth stayed open, his brows shot up as he looked left and right, up and down seeing if maybe he just walked away from the graveyard or if bushes were just always there and he just missed them. He soon chose to forget about it and continue walking towards Westcliff with Furface leading the way.
Sparrow could've sworn he heard Pilgrim's voice for a moment as he heard the voice behind him, but he guessed it must've been his mind playing tricks on him. And soon he began to jog along with Furface as they raced each other towards the direction of Westcliff where a new chapter of Sparrow's journey begins and Sparrow dreads the idea of this new prospect.
