Mistressnmoon: It's been over 10 years since I last touched this story, whoops? I've recently decided to take writing back up as a hobby so expect more updates in the future! I honestly don't know what most of my plans were for this story, so I'm not sure what my updating schedule will look like but I'm excited to be back to writing for Robin and I hope you are too!
Chapter Eleven
My eyes stayed on the floor, awkwardness eating me alive. I'd hoped beyond hope that I would be able to put off this talk. I really did not want to talk with the Doctor about why I'd left, and honestly had planned on running away again before it could happen. But instead, I was inside a bedroom with my so called 'cousin', avoiding eye contact with the man across from me.
"Robin."
"Yeah?" I winced at how weak my voice sounded; how childish it made me feel.
"Talk." I finally lifted my eyes towards the Doctor, barely able to meet his eyes. Not wanting to maintain eye contact I raised mine towards the ceiling, hesitating for a moment before I started talking.
"Look it's just. You do so many incredible and amazing things yeah? Make people want to be better. Do better. But…" Once more I hesitated, before deciding to just let the words flood out of my mouth without thought. I didn't think I'd get through this if I tried to think it through. "But I wasn't being better. I wasn't able to do anything with the Sycorax. I was so… helpless, and I've never been helpless before in my life. And you and Rose. Well. You gravitate towards each other, sometimes it feels like you two are the only ones in the room. That nobody else matters. That I don't matter." I paused, taking a quick breath, "And frankly I didn't think I'd see either of you again. But I keep running into you and I think I'm supposed to be with you, helping you. But how am I supposed to do that when it feels like I don't matter. Like I barely even exist. So I left." At this point I had tears in my eyes, as I continued to avoid the Doctor's eyes. God, I hated crying, it made me feel so weak and so very little.
"Robin." The Doctor's tone was soft, almost hesitant, as if he was afraid I'd break further with the wrong words. "Robin look at me. Please." My eyes hesitantly moved back down to look at the Doctor, tears still resting in the corners. "Robin, you matter so much. You are, simply put, one of the most interesting people I have had the pleasure of meeting. You run headfirst into danger and always do your best to help others." I blinked the remaining tears away, as the Doctor gently placed his hands on the sides of my face. "You are brilliant, I'm sorry." I nodded softly, his hands still on the sides of my head, while I thought about how different the Doctor had been when I helped him with Craig. About how different things could be. Maybe I hadn't given this Doctor enough of a chance? "We, well I, would be honored to have you stay with us." A watery chuckle escaped my mouth before I went to respond.
"Well how could I say no to that?" I shook my head softly before continuing. "As long as you, and Rose, try harder to include me then I suppose I could stay." A teasing grin stretched across my face as I leaned over to ruffle his hair.
"Oi! Watch the hair!" I let out a loud laugh as he ducked away from my hand, moving over to the mirror to fix his hair.
"Sure, sure. I'll make sure to leave your hair alone." I shook my head at the man, glad the tension was gone and that hopefully things would get better. "Now, isn't almost time for dinner? Give me a mo and I'll be ready to go."
"Your companion begs an apology, Doctor. Her clothing has somewhat delayed her." I glanced towards the man, mild concern showing on my face. I don't feel like it should have taken Rose this long to get changed, but maybe the dress was very complicated.
"Oh, that's all right. Save her a wee bit of ham." I guess if the Doctor wasn't too worried, then I shouldn't be too worried.
"The feral child could probably eat it raw." The Captain started laughing, perhaps a little too loudly as he stated,
"Very wise, Ma'am! Very witty!" My lips curved into a mall frown, thinking that the man was overreacting and trying too hard to make a good impression.
"Slightly witty, perhaps. I know you rarely get the chance to dine with me, Captain, but don't get too excited… I shall contain my wit in case I do you further injury." I bit my lip, trying to contain my laughter at the Queens sass. She wasn't wrong, the man had overly responded and was clearly trying too hard to impress the woman.
"Yes Ma'am. Sory Ma'am."
"Besides, we're all waiting on Sir Robert! Come, Sir! You promised s a tale of nightmares." I perked at the Doctor's words, wanting to hear this local tale about the wolf. Local tales were always so interesting to me, they were after all, usually based on some truth.
"Indeed. Since my husband's death, I find myself with more of a taste for supernatural fiction." I gave her a soft look, muttering out,
"You mut miss him a lot."
"Very much." The Queen seemed very sad, which was more than understandable, and a little lost in her thoughts. Probably lost in her memories of her late husband. "Oh, completely. And that's the charm of a ghost story, isn't it? Not the scares and chills, that's just for children, but the… hope of some contact with the great beyond." I glanced towards the Doctor, slightly surprised by the intense look he was giving her, before turning my attention back towards the woman. "We want some message from that place… it's the Creator's greatest's mystery that we are allowed no such consolation. The dead stay silent. And we must wait." My attention once more drifted towards the Doctor as the Queen paused as if shaking herself out of her thoughts. It startled me how sad the Doctor seemed; he was looking down at the table very solemnly. I wasn't sure what he was thinking of, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious about who the man had lost. "Com! Begin your tale, Sir Robert. There is a chill in the air. The wind is holing through the eaves. Tell us of monsters!"
"Are there descriptions of the creature?" The Doctor had clearly come out of his solemn mood, once more curious about this wolf tale. I, myself, was also incredibly curious about this tale and couldn't wait to hear what Sir Robert had to say.
"Oh yes, Doctor. Drawings and woodcarvings. And it's not merely a wolf. T's more than that. This is a man who becomes an animal." The Doctor and I leaned forward in excitement, as both of us questioned,
"A werewolf?" I grinned largely.
"Please tell us the story of the wolf."
"My father didn't treat it as a story. He said it was fact." Sir Robert started off softly, as if contemplating something before he spoke a little more firmly about the beast. "He even claimed to have communed with the beast, to have learned its purpose. I should've listened." I noticed Sir Roberts glancing at the Father by the window before he lowered his voice. "His work was hindered… he made enemies. There's a Monastery in the Glen of Saint Catherine. The Brethren opposed my father's investigations." The Brethren? I glanced over towards the Father near the window, wondering if the two were related.
"Perhaps they thought his work ungodly."
"That's what I thought. But no, I wonder… What if they had a different reason for wanting the story kept quiet? What if they turned from God and worshipped the wolf?" It was then that I noticed the chanting coming from next to the window.
"And what if they were with us right now?" There was a moment of silence, where the only thing we could hear was the chanting coming from the Father.
"What is the meaning of this?" The Captain quickly pulled out his gun, and pointed it at Sir Roberts.
"Explain yourself, Sir Robert!"
"What's happening…"
"I'm sorry, our Majesty, they've got my wife." The Doctor and I both stood up quickly, and the Doctor started shouting at the Father without the Scottish accent,
"Rose! Where's Rose? Where is she?" When the Father didn't respond the Doctor turned towards Sir Roberts. Sir Robert, Robin, come on!" I quickly pulled up the hem of my long dress, running after the two men. We ran through several corridors, with Sir Roberts leading the way towards a cellar. Once we reached the door, the two men several paces ahead of me, the Doctor started kicking on it until it collapsed inward.
"Where the hell have you been?" I finally caght up to the doorway, just in time to glance at the werewolf.
"Oh, that's beautiful!"
"Get out!" I watched, wide eyed, as the wolf began to bend and break the bars of the cage as the room full of house staff were trying to exit the room. Seeing that the Doctor was a little starstruck at the wolf I yelled out,
"Get out!" This seemed to startle the Doctor out of his stunned state as he yelled out,
"Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out!" We funneled people out of the room quickly, as Rose exited, she yelled at the Doctor.
"Come on…" From my spot on in the hallway I saw the wolf stand tall freeing himself from the cage and throwing the top of it across the room. This seemed to knock the Doctor back to Earth, as he slammed the door behind himself and sealed in behind himself with his sonic screwdriver. It didn't take long until the Steward started handing guns out to all the men.
"Arms…. And your strife… ready everyone?" The Stewart turned towards Lady Isobel to tell her,
"Take the girls out through the kitchen."
"I can't leave you. What will you do?" Lady Isobel had turned towards her husband, concern shining in her eyes.
"I must defend her Majesty. Now, don't you think of me, just go." I watched as she gently kissed her husband and started gathering her maids.
"All of you at my side, come on!"
"You should go with them." It took me a moment to realize that Sir Roberts was talking to me, which I guess made sense considering I was wearing a dress too. I opened my mouth to respond but was cut off by the Doctor as he used his sonic to remove Rose's handcuffs.
"No. She stays with me." I blinked at the Doctor in slight confusion but nodded softly.
"Yeah, I stay with Rose and the Doctor." Sr Roberts nodded softly, clearly confused, but let it go anyways. With that settled the Doctor turned to Rose to ask,
"It could be any form of light modulated species triggered by specific wavelengths. Did it say what it wanted?"
"The Queen, the Crown, the throne… you name it." We all glanced up when we heard the thumping noise coming from the cellar, but the Doctor moved back into the hallway to investigate. After a moment I heard low growling, and the Doctor came rushing back in grabbing both my and Rose's hands pulling us behind the line of men with guns.
"Fire!" I watched the wolf stumble back slightly as he was hit with the bullets, but I doubted they were doing as much damage as the men thought. "Fire!" The room steadily filled with smoke, and it seemed like the wolf wasn't around anymore.
"All right, you men, we should retreat upstairs, come with me."
"I'll not retreat. The battle's done. There's no creature on God's Earth that could survive such an assault."
"I'm telling you, come upstairs!" The Doctor sounded angry, clearly having reached the same conclusion I had about the wolf not taking damage.
"And I'm telling you, sir, that I will sleep well tonight with that thing's hide upon my wall." I watched, wearily, as the man moved to look down the corridor, checking on the wolf. "Must've crawled away to die…" Horror struck my body as he was lifted clean through the ceiling, and we could all hear him being devoured.
"There's nothing we can do!" The Doctor pushed us through the doorway, Sir Roberts with us, while we could hear the wolf attacking the men. After he slammed the door shut, the Doctor made sure to lock it with his sonic to hopefully keep the wolf out.
"Your Majesty! Your Majesty!"
"Sir Robert! What's happening? I heard such terrible noises." The Doctor had dashed off somewhere, probably to look for an exit since that door wouldn't stand strong against the wolf.
"Your Majesty, we've got to get out. But what of Father Angelo? Is he still here?"
"Captain Reynolds disposed of him." The Doctor came rushing back over from wherever he had gone, quickly stating,
"The front doors no good, it's been boarded shut. Pardon me, Your Majesty, you'll have to leg it out of a window. You too Robin." I nodded, not too concerned about climbing out a window in this dress, after all I had done much worse things before. I followed the other into another room, nervously tapping my heel on the floor.
"Excuse my manners, Ma'am, but I shall go first, the better to assist Her Majesty's egress."
"A noble sentiment, my Sir Walter Raleigh."
"Yeah, any chance you could hurry up?" Sir Roberts climbed out onto the windowsill, but immediately dodged out of the way of several bullets. The Doctor stared wide eyed ut the window for a moment, stating, "I reckon the monkey boys want us to stay inside."
"Do they know who I am?"
"Well… yes, that why they want you." Rose nodded while adding,
"Yeah, the wolf's lined you up for a… well a biting."
"Now, stop this talk. There can't be an actual wolf." As soon as she finished her words there was a loud howling that echoed throughout the house. We all looked around in alarm before hurrying into a hallway, the wolf battering the door.
"What do we do?"
"We run!" Rose glanced between me and the Doctor as he nodded at my words, as if need confirmation from somebody else.
"Is that it?"
"You got any silverbullets?"
"No not on me!"
"Aw man, you mean you left them in your other overalls?" The Doctor gave me a look, before telling Rose,
"There we are then, we run. Our Majesty, as a Doctor, I recommend a vigorous jog." He jogged in place for a moment as if showing her what he meant. "Good for thr health. Come on!" The Doctor grabbed the Queen's hand, leading her from the room, as I gathered up my skirt and followed them up the stairs with the wolf close on our tails. "Come on! Come on!" The wolf was within striking distance when suddenly Captain Reynolds appeared with a gun and shot the wolf, sending the wolf backwards.
"I'll take this position and hold it. You keep moving, for God's sake! Your Majesty, I went to look for the property, it as taken The chest was empty." Property? Chest? What in the world were they talking about…
"I have it. It's safe."
"Then remove yourself, Ma'am. Doctor, you stand as Her Majesty's Protector. And you, Sir Robert, you're a traitor to the crown."
"Bullets can't stop it!"
"They'll buy you time. Now, run!" I watched with pity as the man positioned himself at the end of the corridor, gun ready, waiting for the beast to show itself. I lingered for a moment before following the Queen and Sir Robert down the hall with the Doctor and Rose behind me. I waited by the door, as the Doctor ran into the room following the other two. Rose stopped at the doorway to look down the hallway, watching Captain Reynolds shoot at the wolf. I turned away after a moment, knowing that the man wasn't going to make it, but Rose seemed frozen in fear and continued to watch the man's final moments.
"Rose! Robin!" Hearing the Doctor shouting at us knocked me out of my daze, and I grabbed onto Rose and pulled her into the room with me, slamming the door behind me as quickly as possible. My hands shook softly as I helped everyone, minus the Queen, start piling furniture and whatever else we could find in front of the door.
"Wait a minute, shh, shh, wait a minute…" The wolf howled for a minute and wasn't making any indication that it was trying to get into the room. "It's stopped." The Doctor stood on one of the chairs and leaned his ear against the door. "It's gone." After a moment of silence, we could all hear the wolf pacing around the outside of the room.
"Listen…" I watched the Doctor silently climb down from his chair, while listening to the wolf make its way around the outside of the room. Everyone was scared, the Queen seemed terrified as she shook in her spot, and my own hands continued to shake just a little bit.
"Is this the only door?" The Doctor whispered so softly that I barely heard him speaking.
"Yes. No!" Sir Roberts and the Doctor both rushed over to the other door and started to barricade it shut.
"Shhh!" I made a quiet shushing noise towards the men as I heard the wolf making a new noise, before the noise completely stopped and footsteps padded softly away.
"I don't understand. What's stopping it?"
"Something inside this room." I watched Sir Roberts sit on one of the chairs that was barricading the door and place his head in his hands. The poor man was dealing with a lot. "What is it? Why can't it get in?"
"I'll tell you what though…"
"What?"
"Werewolf!" I grinned at the two of them, whispering in excitement,
"I know!" I jumped up in down in slight excitement while we all laughed softly to ourselves. "Are you okay though Rose?" Rose nodded towards me.
"I'm okay, yeah!"
"I'm sorry, Ma'am. It's all my fault. I should've sent you away. I tried to suggest something was wrong, I... thought you might notice. Did you think there was nothing strange about my household staff?" I shrugged slightly, honestly, I had just assumed trouble with the wife and that she had taken the better staff members.
"Well, they were bald, athletic... your wife's away, I just thought you were happy."
"I'll tell you what though, Ma'am, I bet you're not amused now." I winced at Rose's words. After all there was a time and place and frankly right now was not the time nor the place.
"Do you think this is funny?"
"No, Ma'am, I'm sorry."
"What, exactly, I pray someone please, what exactly is that creature?" I watched the Doctor scratch gently at the back of his head as he responded,
"You'd call it a werewolf, but technically it's more of a lupine wavelength haemovariform."
"And should I trust you, sir? You who change your voice so easily? Who's companion who also changes her voice so easily? What happened to your accents?"
"Sorry Ma'am." I ducked my head in over to avoid eye contact with the Queen, not having realized that at some point I had dropped my accent as well.
"Oh… right, sorry…"
"I'll not have it. No, sir, not either of you… not that thing… none of it. This is not my world."
Awhile later, after an awkward silence, the Doctor was inspecting the room trying to figure out what exactly was keeping the wolf out of the room.
"Mistletoe… Sir Robert, did our father put that there?"
"I don't know, I suppose so."
"On the other door too… A carving wouldn't be enough… I wonder…" The Doctor seemed to be thinking out loud before he leaned forward to lick the wood. "Viscum album, the oil of mistletoe, it's been worked into the wood like a varnish How clever was your dad? I love him!"
"Oh. Oh! Mistletoe!" The Doctor nodded in my direction before turning to Rose to continue his explanation.
"Powerful stuff, mistletoe. Bursting with lectins and viscotoxins."
"And the wolf's allergic to it?"
"It thinks it is at the very least!" Once again the Doctor nodded before continuing my line of thought.
"The monkey monk monks need a way of controlling the wolf, maybe they trained it to react against certain things."
"Nevertheless, that creature won't give up, Doctor, and we still don't possess an actual weapon." I rolled my eyes knowing that if there was a weapon then it was most certainly in this room. Why else make this room safe instead of the entire house?
"Oh, your father got all the brains, didn't he?" Without thinking about it I smacked the Doctor on the arm as Rose told him,
"Being rude again."
"Good. I meant that one." The Doctor moved over towards the bookshelves before continuing, "We're in a library. Books! Best weapons in the world. This room's the greatest arsenal we could have." The man pulled off several books to hand to Rose, before pulling off several more to hand off to me as well. "Arm yourselves."
"Biology, zoology… there might be something about wolves in here…" I nodded at Rose's words, continuing to read through my own book. We'd been reading for a little bit, trying to figure out the wolf's weakness.
"This one's on old pack mentalities?"
'Hold on, what about this?"
"….some form of explosive…"
"Hmmm, that's the sort of thing. Ooh…" The Doctor jumped down from the ladder he was on, placing the book he'd been reading on top of the table we were at. "Look what your old dad found. Something fell to Earth." We all gathered around the book, seeing the illustration of a rock falling to Earth from the sky.
"A spaceship?"
"A shooting star." Sir Robert leaned further over and started reading out of the book. "'In the year of our Lord, 1540, under the reign of King James the Fifth, an almighty fire did burn in the pit.' That's the Glen of Saint Catherine just by the Monastery." 1540? But that was…
"But that's over three hundred years ago. What's it been waiting for?" I nodded in agreement with Rose wondering the same exact thing.
"Maybe just a single cell survived. Adapting slowly down the generations. It survived through the humans. Host after host after host."
"Huh. That… makes a lot of sense?"
"But why does it want the throne?"
"That's what it wants. It said so, the... the Empire of the Wolf."
"Oh. Oh no." My wide eyes darted over towards the Doctor'. If they wanted what I thought they wanted well, it'd royally fuck up history.
"Imagine it... the Victorian Age accelerated... starships and missiles fueled by coal and driven by steam... leaving history devastated in its wake..."
"Sir Robert!" It was the first time in a while that the Queen had spoken, and it drew all our attention towards her. The man she called for immediately made his way over towards her. "If I am to die here…"
"Don't say that Your Majesty."
"I would destroy myself rather than let that creature infect me. But that's no matter. I ask only that you find some place of safekeeping for something far older and more precious than myself." I watched the Queen pull out her bag, something clearly very important to her inside it.
"Hardly the time to worry about your valuables." I rolled my eyes at the Doctor, who had spoken from near the table, knowing that whatever the Queen possessed had to be pretty important if she was willing to give up her life for it.
"Thank you for your opinion. But there is nothing more valuable than this." The Queen the pulled out the Koh-I-Noor diamond from her bag and held it in the palm of her hand.
"Is that the Koh-I-Noor?"
"Oh, yes... the greatest diamond in the world." Both the Doctor and Rose moved to take a closer look at the diamond, clearly very impressed by it, while I sat down the book in my hand and moved closer towards the group.
"Given to me as the spoils of war. Perhaps its legend is now coming true. It is said that whoever owns it must surely die."
"Well, that's true of anything if you own it long enough. Can I...?" I chuckled softly to myself, agreeing with the Doctor, as he held out his hand for the diamond. The Queen carefully gave him the diamond and the Doctor pushed up his glasses to look closer at the diamond. Rose gently prodded the diamond as well, her eyes wide. "That is so beautiful."
"How much is it worth?"
"I've heard it said that it's worth the wages of the entire planet for a whole week." The Doctor nodded at my words, as the two peered closely at the diamond.
"Good job my mum's not here. She'd be fighting the wolf off with her bare hands for that thing."
"And she'd win." Me and Rose laughed at the Doctor's response. Sure, I didn't know Jackie Tyler all that well, but from what I did know the statement rang true and was hilarious to me.
"Where is the wolf?" Sir Roberts walked away from our little group. I don't trust this silence."
"Mmm. I don't like it either Sir Roberts."
"Why do you travel with it?" The Doctor's attention was still on the diamond, as was Rose's, as they wondered why the Queen had it with her.
"My annual pilgrimage. I'm taking it to Helier and Carew. The Royal Jewelers at Hazelhead. The stone needs recutting."
"Oh but it's perfect."
"My late husband never thought so."
"Now, there's a fact, Prince Albert kept on having the Koh-I-Noor cut down. It used to be forty percent bigger than this. But he was never happy. Kept on cutting and cutting." Forty percent bigger? That's wild, why did he keep cutting it smaller?
"He always said... the shine was not quite right. But he died with it still unfinished."
"Unfinished?" The words escaped my mouth without my permission, as confusion colored my words. Why did I feel like there was something that I was missing?
"Oh yes!" I turned towards the Doctor, who tossed the diamond back to the Queen, as he clearly had the piece that I was missing and had figured out something important. "There's a lot of unfinished business in this house. His father's research, your husband, Ma'am, he came here, and he sought the perfect diamond, hold on, hold on..." I watched the Doctor as he ruffled his hair deep in thought, "All these separate things, they're not separate at all, they're connected! Oh, my head, my head! What if, this house, it's a trap for you, is that right, Ma'am?"
"Obviously."
"At least, that's what the wolf intended. But!"
"What if there's a trap inside the trap?" In my excitement I cut off the Doctor, realizing what I had been missing before. This was a big trap for the big old wolf.
"Exactly!"
"Explain yourselves."
"What if his father and your husband weren't just telling each other stories. They dared to imagine all this was true. And they planned against it. Laying the real trap not for you... but for the wolf." As some plaster fell from the ceiling I looked up, seeing the wolf walking across the glass dome above our heads. "That wolf there..." The glass suddenly started cracking, letting us all know that the werewolf was about to join us. Both Rose and the Doctor tossed down their books and ran towards the doors with the Queen and me joining them. "Out! Out! Out!" As the werewolf crashed through the glass ceiling, we all tore apart the barricade that we had placed in front of the door and ran out into the hallway.
"Your Majesty!" The Doctor gave one more look into the room, probably at the roaring wolf, before closing the door. We all booked it down the hallway.
"Gotta get to the observatory!" The wolf was close behind us as we rounded the next corner as we tried to get to the observatory. Rose let out a scream as the wolf was almost on her, only to be saved by Lady Isobel throwing a pan of something, probably mistletoe, onto the wolf. Rose let out another scream as the wolf bounded away from us and back down the hallway. "Good shot!"
"It was mistletoe!" The Doctor and Rose chased after the wolf, just for a minute, to make sure that it had actually left.
"Isobel!" The two gave a soft kiss, relieved that they were both okay. "Get back downstairs."
"Keep yourself safe." Sir Roberts nodded and placed another soft kiss on his wife's lips.
"You go." I watched Lady Isobel nod, before her and the maids left to make their way back towards the kitchens.
"Girls, come with me. Dow the back stairs, back to the kitchen. Quickly!" The man watched his wife leave with the maids, clearly wondering if he'll see her again.
"Come on!" The Doctor interrupted the moment in which I was going to try to comfort Sir Roberts, and then we went off running again.
"The observatory is this way!" We reached a central staircase fairly quickly and rushed up the stairs towards the observatory.
"No mistletoe on the doors, your father wanted the wolf to get inside! I just need time! Is there any way of barricading this?"
"Just do your work and I'll defend it." I frowned at the man, worried about exactly how he was planning to defend us.
"If we could bind them shut with rope or something!" I wasn't sure if the Doctor had simply not heard the man or if he was simply ignoring him.
"I said I'd find you time, sir. Now get inside."
"Good man." As the Doctor closed the door, I gave Sir Roberts one last sad look, knowing his chances of making it were slim to none. "Your Majesty, the diamond."
"For what purpose?"
"The purpose it was designed for." After only a moment of hesitation, the Queen pulled the diamond out of her bag and handed it over to the Doctor. As soon as it was in his hands the Doctor ran over towards the telescope. "Rose! Robin!" The two of us rushed over to the Doctor to help with whatever he needed. "Lift it! Come on!" The three of us struggled to turn the wheel, but after a moment or two of struggling the cogs on the telescope finally started to move and the telescope started to rise.
"Is this the right time for stargazing?"
"What better time than when we don't have time?" My smirk fell once I heard the, probably last, terrorized screams of Sir Roberts echoed into the room. Rose looked hopelessly at the door, while the Queen held up her crucifix, as the wolf battered at the door. The Queen was murmuring a prayer under her breath, while the gears spun into place.
"You said this thing doesn't work!"
"It doesn't work as a telescope because that's not what it is! It's a light chamber! It magnifies the light rays like a weapon. We've just got to power it up!"
"But there's no electricity!" The Doctor let out a soft grunt and turned towards the light chamber.
"Moonlight! But it needs moonlight! It's made by moonlight!"
"And? We're like 70% water and we can still drown, can't we?"
"See Robin gets it!" I grinned at the Doctor, as the chamber finally seemed to align with the moon.
"Come on!" The three of us finally stepped away from the telescope as it was properly aligned, and the moonlight bounced off the prisms. Suddenly the werewolf burst through the door, and the light was just short of the werewolf. It continued its advance on the Queen, still intent on getting the crown. The Doctor then dove across the floor and tossed the Koh-I-Noor into the bright beam of light. A vibrate, bright, light hit the werewolf and lifted him off the floor. He hung there caught in the beam of moon light and transformed back into his human form.
"Make it brighter. Let me go." The Doctor slowly walked across to the light chamber and turned on a switch. The wolf let out a loud howl, vanishing from our sight, as the light shut off.
"Your Majesty? Did it bite you?" It was then that I turned my attention towards the Queen, curious about her injury.
"No it's... it's a cut."
"If that thing bit you…"
"It was a splinter of wood when the door came apart." I let out a soft humming noise, not quite believing her about the injury.
"Let me see." The Queen sharply pulled her hand away from the Doctor, making me believe her even less.
"It is nothing." I eyed the Lady suspiciously, as did the Doctor, not quite believing her but glad that this seemed to be over none the less.
We all, meaning myself Rose and the Doctor, were currently kneeling in front of the Queen at dawn. Everyone from the household was present for this ceremony.
"By the power invested in me by the Church and the State, I dub the: Sir Doctor of TARDIS." The Queen tapped the Doctor on both of his shoulders before moving onto Rose. "By the power invested in me by the Church and the State, I dub thee: Dame Rose of the Powell Estate." She did the same sword motion as she had done with the Doctor on Rose. "By the power invested in me by the Church and the State, I dub thee: Dame Robin of the Bowie Estate." Once more she used her sword, tapping my shoulders this time. Honestly, I didn't really want to be a Dame, but I knew it would drive Jack crazy when I told him about it. Plus Rose and the Doctor had pestered me until I had agreed to join them. "You may stand." The three of us stood from our kneeling positions.
"Many thanks, Ma'am. "
"Thank you, Ma'am."
"Thanks! They're never going to believe this back home."
"Your Majesty, you said last night about receiving a message from the great beyond; I think your husband cut that diamond to save your life. He's protecting you even now Ma'am, even from beyond the grave." I nodded my head at the Doctor's words, agreeing that the Queen's late husband was continuing to protect her from beyond the grave. "Indeed. Then you may think on this, also: that I am not amused." The Doctor and myself let out a groan, while Rose silently cheered. I had hoped the Queen wouldn't say that because it would just lead Rose into other bets and get us into stupid shenanigans.
"Yes!"
"Not remotely amused." I noticed Rose tried to wipe the smug smirk off of her face but was only mildly successful. "And henceforth... I banish you." Shock rocketed through me, we were banished?
"I'm sorry?"
"I rewarded you, Sir Doctor. And now you are exiled from this empire, never to return. I don't know what you are, the three of you, or where you're from, but I know that you consort with stars, and magic, and think it fun. But your world is steeped in terror and blasphemy and death, and I will not allow it! You will leave these shores and you will reflect, I hope, on how you managed to stray so far from all that is good. And how much longer you will survive this... terrible life. Now leave my world. And never return."
God I couldn't wait to get out of this dress and heels and into some comfy jeans and converse. The cart we had hitched a ride on slowed to a halt.
"Woah!" The three of us jumped off and waved cheerfully at the farmer.
"Cheers, Dougal!" The farmer, Dougal, gave us a short wave back before continuing on his way. "You know, the funny thing is, Queen Victoria did actually suffer a mutation of the blood! It's historical record haemophiliac. It used to be called the Royal Disease! But it's always been a mystery because she didn't inherit it. Her mum didn't have it her dad didn't have it, it came from nowhere!"
"So that scratch was actually a small werewolf bite?" The Doctor scratched the back of his head.
"Well, maybe Haemophilia is just a Victorian euphemism." I blinked over at the Doctor, wondering if the Queen had actually been bitten or not. I guess I'd never know.
"For werewolf?"
"Could be!"
"Victoria's a werewolf?"
"Could be! And her children had the Royal Disease. Maybe she gave them a quick nip." A quick nip? Like. She had willingly passed on the werewolf gene?
"So, the Royal Family are werewolves?"
"Well... maybe not yet. I mean, a single wolf cell could take... a hundred years to mature... might be ready by... oooh... early 21st century...?"
"No way! That's just insane."
"Mind you… Princess Anne!" I glanced over at Rose, contemplating her point for a moment, with my hand on my chin.
"I'll say no more."
"And if you think about it... they're very private. They plan everything in advance. They, they could schedule themselves around the moon, we'd never know!" I chuckled at Rose, her enthusiasm a little contagious. The Doctor also let out a soft laughing noise as he opened the TARDIS.
"Well… They do like hunting, don't they?"
"Robin's right! They like hunting! They love blood sports!" The Doctor started to do his thing, working on flying the TARDIS in order to get us out here as Rose gushed out, "Oh my God they're werewolves!" We all paused for a moment before letting out silly howls and cackling loudly. After we calmed down a little, I looked at the other two, and told them,
"Okay, well, that sure was fun and all that but I'm tired and sore and want out of this freaking dress."
"I'd been meaning to ask, what's with the dress?" I paused on my way towards the hallway out of the main console room, turning to look at Rose.
"Honestly, I'm not sure, but the TARDIS wouldn't let me have anything else. Think she hid my normal clothes after my shower?"
"Huh, that sure is weird." I noticed the Doctor giving me a funny look though I wasn't sure why.
"Right? Weird as shit, but she seems to like to get up to mischief, what can you do about it?" I gave a soft shrug and made my way out of the console room and towards my bedroom to change out if the big, gross, dress.
