After Paul left the hospital, Perry felt much better. He decided to take a little time off so that way he'd get the rest what the doctor had told him to do. His clients would have to wait until he can go back to work. He'll pass this over to Della and have her tell his clients they should wait until the doctor thinks he's ready. The doctor said he could leave, so Perry was thankful for that.
So Perry picked up the phone in his hospital room and called his office.
"Hi, Della."
"Perry! It's good to hear your voice again. Paul told me everything on what happened. How are you feeling?"
"It's good to hear your voice too, Della. I was told that the doctor wants me to have some rest after what happened. You can pass this on."
"I will, Perry. Hope you come back sooner."
"So do I," he agreed.
They talked a bit longer, but he didn't want to make the conversation too long because he might have clients calling in and asked to speak with him.
"I'd better let you go, Della."
"How long do you want me to tell the clients when to expect you back?"
"I don't know. When I hear something from the doctor, I'll call you."
"Thanks, Perry. Maybe I could drop by one of these days."
"Please do. I still want to know why this accident had to happen to me."
"Isn't that why you have Paul?"
"Exactly. I'm happy I was able to hire him when I started my job as lawyer."
"And a good investigator," she added.
"I'll get some rest now. I'm getting tired fast today."
"Good idea. I'll let you know when I will be over and see you."
Then they hung up.
Perry did what he'd just told Della - sleep. It might be like that for the rest of today, but again it wouldn't happen. The next time he woke up, Perry looked at the clock. Two - fifteen. He was in his bedroom. And slept since the phone call with Della earlier this morning.
He got up and decided to get something to eat and drink. Been a long time too, he noticed. While he had something to eat and drink, Perry turned on the television. He was able to watch about twenty - thirty minutes and nodded off again. Good thing he was able to remember turning the television off.
When he got up from the couch, Perry went back to his bedroom. This time he left the bedroom door open so he might hear something. He lived alone anyway. You never know if someone might drop in if he slept right through the whole excitement.
About two hours later, Perry thought he heard a car park in his driveway. He wasn't expecting anyone. He didn't care what time it was right now. He put on his slippers and robe. He walked downstairs and opened the door. He didn't hear his phone ring.
"Mind if we come in, Mr. Mason?" the officer asked.
"Of course. Why didn't you call to let me know you were coming with a police officer?"
"I did. I checked in the office and Della told me about your conversation, and decided to call you myself. You didn't answer, so this was the best choice I could get."
"Thanks for coming over, Officer."
"Have you been asleep this entire time? You have slippers and a robe on," Paul said.
"I was. I should've heard that phone ring."
"That's kay. This wouldn't take long," Paul told him.
Perry guessed it had something to do with the accident that recently happened.
"Do you remember anything before what happened?"
"I was on my way to work when this happened. I couldn't catch the license plate number or recognize the driver. I blacked out about five minutes or so before the ambulance came to take me."
"So that means the time probably was between eight - thirty and nine," the officer said.
"Something like that. Were you able to find the person or persons who made this happen?" Perry asked.
"It was a couple in their mid - forties. The had two children in the backseat. And they all were smart there were seatbelts in the car."
"Was anyone injured besides me?" Perry asked.
"No. That's a good thing."
"Why would I be the only one who was injured?"
"That's what we're trying to find out, Perry. You look like you're about to go to sleep again. I'm happy you've been listening to doctor's orders. And you did the right thing about telling Della you were going to take time off because of this accident. It scared both of us. I'll be back later and check in on you."
"You don't have to do that, Paul.
"But I'm going to anyway."
"You're the best, Paul."
"Thank you. See you soon."
