Chapter Two
New Life, New Town
Brooke was walking around the town shops. She was grateful that Julian and her built a friendship after this divorce, and he sent her money through their still joint account. He gave her child support money and extra $10,000 for her every month. And she being a fashion designer, and owning a few stores did well for herself. After 20 years together and two children, she deserved it. She was on the phone with her lawyer.
"Mike, I need this settled," Brooke said as she looked both ways before crossing the street to Karen's Café to grab a bite.
"I understand Penelope, but his ex-wife feels that their daughter is entitled to some of that money."
"He divorced Amanda and gave her money. HE changed his will to give it all to me. I have a right."
"I understand, but until this gets settled your account is frozen. You still have that account with your ex-husband, right?"
Brooke sighed, "Yes," she said.
"Until this gets settled you need to depend on that."
"Okay fine, I gotta go," Brooke said, and hung up. She looked into the dinner, and pulled the door open. The door chimed as she walked in.
"Hi!" Haley said greeting her.
Brooke smiled, "Hi," she said.
"Just you today?" she asked walking Brooke to the booth.
"Yeah. The kids are at school."
She smiled a bit, and looked hesitant. "Can I ask how old are you?" she asked. "I mean, you look so young, and your kids look like teenagers. I mean, I'm 33 and I have a 15-year-old and 11 years old. I mean you don't have to answer-"she stammered obviously flustered for even asking.
Brooke smiled a kind smile, "No worries. Um, my son is turning 17 in two months and my daughter is 14. I'm 33 in a month."
Haley's eyes widened they were pretty close in age when they both gave birth. "Oh, we were about the same age when we had kids."
Brooke chuckled, "Yeah well, it was frowned upon then," she said and paused. She looked up at Haley, "I don't think I told you my name. I'm Penelope Baker."
Her eyes widened, "You're the founder of Hoes over Bros," she said.
Brooke tilted her head, "You've heard of my store?" she asked.
She noded, "I dabble with online ordering," she said. "My husband travels as a coach for the highschool Ravens basketball team, so I kinda spend my days online," she said shamely.
"Yeah, I understand the whole husband traveling," she said and drifted off.
Haley looked up as the door chimed, and her eyes widened looking at Brooke. "I'm so sorry, I'm here just chatting away, and you're here to just eat."
Brooke smiled, "Actually, this is the first actual genuine conversation I've had with anyone."
"Well, living here, you'll see we're all genuine people."
"Hey Haley," a guy said coming out from behind the kitchen. The two girls looked up, and Brooke's eyes widened. It was that guy. That guy that caught her eyes yesterday. The guy that stopped her heart, and took her breath away. That guy-
"Hey Luke, I'll be right there," Haley said looking at Brooke. "That's my brother in law." Brooke took her eyes off of him, and looked at Haley, "I'll give you a minute to look over the menu," she said and walked over to him.
Shalina Baker was a pretty 5'2", blue eyed, dark brown eyed girl. She had a petite frame like her 5'4" mother, and blue eyes like her father. She was an identical twin to her mom, yet you could see hints of her father. She was struggling at her locker. It was her third time trying to get this thing open. She was about to give up.
"Aren't these things tricky?" a voice asked.
She looked up to see a dark brown-haired, blue-eyed scrawny curly haired boy. He stood 3 inches taller than her. "Yeah, I'm about to start kicking it," she joked.
He held his hand out, "Let me help you," he said.
She gave him the paper with the code on it. He opened it with ease, and she smiled gratefully as she unloaded the books that was killing her back. She took her math book, and put it in her backpack. She zipped it up, and looked up at him. "Thank you," she said.
He shrugged, "No problem. I'm Matt," he said holding out his hand. "Matt Jagielski."
"Shalina Baker," she said shaking his hand.
His eyes widened as his hand went to his backpack shoulder straps. "Are you related to Julian Baker?" he asked.
She nodded, "He's, my dad. But if you don't mind, can you keep it in the d.l. I really don't want everyone making a big deal of it."
"No worries," Matt said as the bell rang. "Well, I'm off to algebra."
Shalina looked at her schedule, "Me too."
His eyes widened, "Whose your teacher?"
She tilted her head at the name, "Mr. Jagielski."
"I'm in that class," he said smiling. "We can go together."
"Is that you-"
"Yep," he said smiling as they walked down the hall.
….
Liam walked into the courtyard. He stood at 6 feet, and had piercing green-blue eyes. He had dark brown hair, and an athletic frame. He was a spitting image of his father, yet the drive of his mother. To say he wasn't good-looking would be a lie. He had caught the eyes of every girl there, yet he wasn't making friends. He walked into the lunchroom, dodging people swarming around him. He smiled in relief seeing his sister. He half jogged up to her.
"Hey," he said. "You have NO idea how grateful I am to find you," he said.
She smiled as they got in line, "I'm glad you found me." She felt glares on her. "They're all glaring at me," she whispered.
"Who is?" he asked.
"These girls."
He chuckled, "Well, we are new here sis."
"Yeah you're right. So how's your classes?"
He shrugged. "I have auto next."
"I have English," she said as they moved with the line. "My classes are Honors."
"You high achiever," he jokingly said nudging her.
"You under achiever," she joked back. She sighed, "I don't know if I could keep up. It doesn't help that we came in the middle of the semester."
"Sorry to cramp your status," he said.
She rolled her eyes, "You know what I mean Liam."
He chuckled, "I know. I know. Let eat lunch together. Since we don't know anyone here."
"Hey Shalina!" a guy called to her.
"I'll take that back," Liam said as they grabbed their trays.
Shalina chuckled, "He helped me open my locker. And we have algebra together. But sit with us."
"Yeah, sure why not." They followed the line grabbing their food.
….
"Hey Nate," he said walking into his office.
Nathan Scott looked up from his desk. He had the landline phone to his ear, and motioned his company to come in. He walked in and sat on the chair. Nathan hung up the phone, and looked up at his brother.
"What's up Luke?" he asked.
"Just came by to see how my lil bro was doing," he said smirking leaning back on the chair.
"Doing great," he said. "Ravens season is starting, so I'm just working out kinks."
"Cool. Cool. I just grabbed lunch at the Café and wanted to stop by before heading to the office."
"Mayoring does not rest," Nathan joked.
He sighed, "Nope. No it doesn't."
"I'm surprised Rico isn't trailing after you," he said.
Lucas chuckled, "Yeah well, I kinda ditched him at the café."
"Luke, you know you'd be a mess without him."
"Yeah. True. He's a good manager."
"Yet you work the poor guy to the bone."
"No I don't. He insists on taking it all on."
"Have you thought about getting an assistant?"
"Thought about it," Lucas responded and shrugged. "Just since Peyton got pregnant again, after 3 kids under 10, I had to let her go. She needs to be home with them."
"Yeah your right. Their son is a good player though. He has potential."
"Yeah I seen him play. You think Jamie and him are at the same level?"
"Jamie's good, but he has no defense."
Just as they were talking Lucas's phone rang.
"Hey Rico," Lucas said. "Yeah, I'm heading to the office. Okay, bye," he said and hung up. He stood up, "well, I gotta get going."
"Okay, see ya Luke."
"Later Nate," he said and walked out.
….
Lucas Scott stood at 6'0", athletic built from his basketball days, and deep blue eyes. His blonde hair was short and somewhat messy, and he is the most wanted Bachelor in all of South Carolina. He walked into his office. Being mayor had its perks, but it was the most stressful job he ever had. Rico was already there looking out the big window.
"Hey Rico," Lucas said settling on his chair behind his desk.
"Luke, we need to talk about your appearance at the town hall tomorrow."
"Okay."
"We need to address the school budget, health budget, and the summer event," Rico said looking down at his clipboard.
"Of course," he said opening the folder in front of him. "Okay we can start with the health budget. Get a hold of Medicaid, and Blue Cross," he said. Discuss our contract with them, and what we can do to make it affordable. Then get the principals from the schools and patch them to me one at a time," he instructed.
"Sure thing," Rico said heading to the door. He paused, and turned to look at Lucas who was going over files on his desk. "Have you thought about getting an assistant?" he asked.
"Why? When you're so good at it," Lucas said not looking up.
"Luke, I'm swamped trying to push you out there, and meetings-"
Lucas looked up, "Rico, I'm kidding," he said. "I'll get on it," he assured him.
"Thanks Luke," he said and walked out.
…..
Brooke walked into the house with the bags, "Hey Zeus," she said to the German Shepard who greeted her. She set the bags down, and sat on the bench a the doorway to remove her shoes. The 6-month dog brought a toy to her, and she grabbed it from him petting him and threw it down the hallway. She grabbed the bags she put down and stood up. She headed up the stairs, and brought the bags to her room. She bought fabric to get back to designing. She brought the three bags with fabrics, and other things out of her room, and down the hall to her designer room. She was the founder of Hoes over Bros online clothing store. She had one store in Los Angeles which she just opened before they left. They had to leave. Now she had people contacting her wanting to buy it from her. She was doing well, especially with the allowance Julian gave her, but she knew she couldn't keep depending on it. She was by no means broke, but she was at war with her exes' ex-wife. She found designing therapeutic. She put the bags down in the room and headed to her desk. Her dog came in and headed to his bed. He circled it twice and laid down resting his head on the bed.
She sat down and opened the sketchbook. She reached over to her pencil cup, grabbed a pencil, and started sketching.
….
Lucas walked into his 5-bedroom modern-built mansion. It was lonely going home to it alone. He had a long day. His 2 year old lab greeted him.
"Hey Boscoe," he said rubbing his ear.
He walked down the open walkway past his living room and walked to his kitchen. He opened the smart-tech fridge, and grabbed an evian water bottle as his dog walked around. He sighed. He was a good-looking bachelor and lived the bachelor life, but at 35 he was tired of being looked at as only that. He didn't get his law degree and became the Mayor to just be a well-sought-out bachelor. He opened his freezer and took out the ready-prep meal that was nicely stacked in his freezer. He pulled off the lid, and popped it into the microwave. At 35 he thought he'd be married and living that family life. But as influential as he is, he couldn't help but feel the loneliness that filled his life. He sighed wondering if this was all he was going to have.
