Chapter Four –

*Flashback*

"Brooke, come home," she begged.

Fourteen-year-old Brooke Davis stood in the phone booth twirling the cord around her finger as she eyed Julian filling the tank of the Volvo.

"I-I can't go through that again," she choked out holding back tears. "I won't" she said in a stronger voice. "I gotta go Bri. I'll call when I can," she said and hung up as Julian made a hand motion that they had to go."

She hung up and ran out the booth towards Julian not looking back.

**End Of Flashback**

She was sitting at the table with coffee mug in hand. She had done a lot to get where she was. She absentmindedly stirred her coffee with a coffee spoon, and stared off at a distance.

"Mom," Shalina said interrupting her thoughts.

Brooke blinked, and looked at her, "Yeah?" she asked.

"You okay?" she asked grabbing a plate and filling it with bacon, and eggs.

"Yeah. Where's Liam?"

Shalina rolled her eyes, "Bathroom."

Zeus came trotting out of Brooke's room that was downstairs next to the kitchen. Brooke ran her hand on his fur as he brushed against her. "Hey boy," she said as he headed to his water.

"Mom, what are we doing this weekend?" Shalina asked.

"Maybe shopping?" Brooke asked.

"Cool, I need new clothes," she said eating.

Liam came down the stairs, "You ready Shal?" he asked.

"Come get some breakfast first," Brooke said.

"Thanks ma," he said grabbing toast. He looked at Shalina, "Ready?" he asked, "See you later mom," he said and headed out the door.

Shalina grabbed the juice, and washed down the food she just ate, and grabbed her book bag. She quickly petted Zeus, and waved to her mom and rushed after Liam shutting the door after her.

Brooke shook her head and smiled. She looked at Zeus, "Kids right?" she asked. She looked at the time, "Oh shit," she said. "I have to get ready," she said and ran to her room to get ready.

Shalina grabbed her book out of her locker, and slung her backpack to the front and put her book in her backpack.

"Shalina, the girl I wanted to see," a voice said.

She looked up to the dirty blonde heading towards her with two other girls. She forced a smile, "Oh hey Jenny," she said.

"We're going shopping," she said as Shalina closed her locker.

"That's great," she said pulling her strap over her other shoulder.

"You're coming," she stated.

"You're inviting her?" one of the other girls asked.

"But she's a," the other girl said looking her over with distaste, "A freshmen," she finished.

The dirty blonde turned and looked at her friends, "Does it matter?" she asked.

"Jenny," Shalina said. "It's okay, they don't want me there."

Jenny spun around, "No, you are coming," she said bopping her nose. "After school, meet us here," she said referring to her locker. "We'll see you lil S," she said winking at her, and flipped her hair over her shoulder, and turned walking away.

The two girls exchanged a looked at Shalina and followed Jenny.

"Well, isn't my sister something?" he asked.

Shalina smiled, and looked up at the taller guy standing next to her. "Well, she knows what she wants."

He chuckled, "She influences, I can tell you that."

Just then the bell rang.

"Well, that's our cue. Math?" he said. He held out his arm and Shalina hooked her arm in.

"Math," Shalina repeated and they headed to their class.

Lucas pulled up in his parking lot. "I'm just getting to work mom," he said talking in his airpod. "All right. Love you too, bye," he said getting out of his car, and walking to the trunk. He opened it and grabbed his briefcase. He closed his trunk, and headed to the front of the building. He entered it, and walked down the hall to the elevators. He pushed the button for the 30th floor. Just as the door closed, it opened again, and Lucas looked up to see her walk in carrying a tray of coffee cups.

"Oh hi Mr. Scott," she said flashing a smile.

"Penelope," he said nodding. "On time I see."

"Always," she said. "Coffee?" she asked grabbing one of them and holding it out to him.

He accepted it, "Why thank you Ms.-"

"Penelope is fine," she cut him off.

He raised an eyebrow as the elevator stopped on the floor, "Penelope." They stepped out of the elevator, and right into the chaos. There were long tables in the middle of the room with people doing paper sorting, and cubicles with computers where people were on the phones, and typing. "Follow me," he said.

"Luke! There you are," a guy said walking towards him. "I have messages," he said. "Senator Mercado's assistant called confirming your lunch tomorrow. Congresswoman Julie called asking about your dinner date tonight-" Lucas paused and cleared his throat.

"Well, thanks Rico. How about you go and do your job we got it from here," he said.

Rico stopped, "We?" he asked.

"Oh. Rico, this is Penelope. Penelope, Rico," he said.

Rico looked her over, "And who is this?" he asked as they followed him into his office.

"My new assistant," he said settling behind his desk, and crumpling up some of the notes he went through.

"Lucas, are you sure it's right to bring in someone new," Rico said.

"She has a good resume Rico. Trust me," he said turning on his computer, and opening his laptop.

Rico faked a smile, and turned to look at Brooke. "Well, Penelope, let me show you your desk," he said, and walked out of the office. Brooke looked at Lucas and he gave her a reassuring smile, and Brooke followed him.

There was a desk right outside of the office. It had a computer, a desk calendar, and a phone with a notepad and pen next to it. "This is your desk," he said, and opened one of the drawers pulling out a phone. "This is your work phone, no personal calls. You must answer it, no matter what," he said. "You are to attend any functions or events, and you MUST keep heels at your desk just for last minute dinners, and you MUST be here before he gets here," he said. "This is your files," he said opening the last drawer. "You can design the desk any way you want, just no distractions, or pictures."

"Got it," Brooke said.

"All your passwords and log-ins will be emailed to your personal email in an hour or two, instructions are in the top drawer, if you have any questions my number is in the phone," he said. His phone rang, and he was out of there.

Brooke looked around and smiled. She went around the desk running her fingers on the it and sat down on the chair. "Well, this I can get use too," she said smiling. She looked at the coffees on her desk, "I have no idea what to do with this."

"I'll take one," Rico said grabbing one as he walked past and proceeded down the hall to his office shutting the door behind him.

"Mr. Baker pick up the pace," the coach yelled as the group of teenagers ran down the field.

Liam reached the end of the field and shook it off. He was out of shape, and he knew it. He knew he should have been working out, but he had other things he had to do. Like date for one.

"Heads up!" someone yelled.

Liam looked up to see the football flying at him. He shielded himself instead of catching it, and it flew over him barely missing him. As soon as he came too, he closed his eyes and swung his head, "Fuck," he muttered, and looked at the disappointed teammates.

He headed to the locker rooms. He felt a shove in the back.

"Slippery hands up there Baker," his teammate said.

Liam shook his head as he took his jersey off, and grabbed the shirt inside his locker.

"Whoa, you aren't going to shower?" Max asked as he opened his locker next to Liam's.

"Nah, I gotta get out of here," he said, and grabbed his backpack, and shut his locker. "See you tomorrow," he said and walked out.

Max shook his head. "Good kid, but strange," he said grabbing his gym bag and headed to the shower.

Liam saw his Shalina standing at the curb. He joined her. "Hey lil sis," he said.

"Hey," Shalina said looking up to see her older brother. "Don't you have practice?" she asked.

He tilted his head. "You do know it's 4:30."

"Oh," she said.

"Have you been waiting for me?"

"No. Jenny told me to meet them here, but I guess they ditched me."

Just as she said that she heard a honk, and the siblings looked up.

"What's up slut?" Jenny said from the driver seat. "Sorry, Julia couldn't decide what to wear," she said glancing at the brunette in the back.

"Hi Liam," Jenny playfully flirted waving.

He smiled a bit, "Hey Jenny." He said and looked at Shalina. "Be safe alright? I'll see you at home," he said.

Shalina nodded, and got into the passenger side. "Tell mom I'll text her," she said as Jenny drove off.

Liam sighed, "Well, I don't know if I should have let her get into that car," he said shaking his head, and headed to the parking lot towards his car.

….

Brooke hung up the phone. She had answered 200 phone calls and made 50 in the favor of Lucas. She was done for the day. She pulled open the drawer, and grabbed the notebook with the instructions on how to forward the phone. She was flipping through the notebook, and ran her finger down a page looking for it.

She heard Rico and Lucas talking coming out of his office.

"Okay I'll send these out tomorrow," Rico said referring to the envelope he was holding. He looked over at Brooke, and rolled his eyes. He looked at Lucas, "See you tomorrow," he said, and turned and left.

Lucas smirked and headed over to Brooke. "Hey," he said.

She looked up, "Hey," she said.

"How was your first day?" he asked.

She cleared her throat, "Well, I'm working on it."

He chuckled, "Here I'll help you," he said grabbing the phone, and hit the numbers.

She looked up, "Well, Mr. Scott. I didn't know you knew your way around a phone."

He chuckled, "Well, if you knew my dad. You'd know that I have experience in all things secretary like."

Brooke nodded, "Fair."

"So what do you have going on for the rest of the day?"

"Cooking dinner for two teenagers," she said pulling out her bag, and looking at her phone. "Oh scratch that, one."

Lucas nodded, "Sounds fun. I only make a dinner for one and a dog."

Brooke pulled out her flats from her bag, and slipped off her heels. She looked up to see Lucas raise an eyebrow, "Don't judge," she said standing up, and putting her heels in the bottom drawer. "If you had to wear heels for 8 hours a day, you'd understand."

He held his hands up, "I'm not judging. My ex wore heels all the time, and I admire you for just changing them up the way you did."

"Well, thank you."

He chuckled, "You amuse me Penelope Baker."

She smiled, "Why thank you Mr. Scott."

"Shall we?"

"We shall," she said as they headed out.

….

Brooke got home seeing Liam sprawled on the couch with Zeus next to him.

"Well, hello son of mine," she said.

"Hello mother dear," he responded. "How was work?"

"Good," Brooke said, "And yours?"

"It was eh," he said.

"Just eh?" she asked heading to the kitchen.

"I don't want to talk about it."

"Liam-" She began to say as a phone rang.

"Its dad," he said looking at his phone. "Hey dad," he said answering the phone, and got up from the couch. "You won't believe what happened today," he said.

"Pizza for dinner," Brooke asked.

"Yeah, sounds good," Liam said, and headed up the stairs. "No mom was just asking about dinner," he said. "So how was Ibiza?" she heard him ask before hearing the door shut.

Brooke sighed, "I am with them 24/7 but when daddy calls I'm chopped liver," she said rolling her eyes, and grabbing the bottle of wine in the fridge. She debated grabbing a glass and shrugged. She opened the bottle and just drank straight from it. She opened the freezer taking out the pizza box and breadsticks.

….

Lucas walked into his house. Boscoe greeted him as usual. "What's up my dude," he said rubbing the brown pitbull's head. "I need my Boscoe time," he said. "Lets get dinner," he said and headed to the kitchen with Boscoe right behind him. He was Lucas Scott. Hottest, single bachelor, yet he was alone.
