Chapter Five –

Shalina walked into the house followed by Liam. "I'm exhausted," she said dropping her bag, and plopping on the couch.

Liam followed suite and plopped on the one seater couch. "I am with you lil sis," he said.

He noticed something wrong. "Wait, where's Zeus?" he asked.

Shalina sat up alarmed, "You're right." She looked around. "Uh Liam, was there a luggage sitting by the stairs when we came in?" he asked.

Just then Zeus came running down the stairs.

"Hey boy!" Liam said as the 6 month old German Shepherd jumped on him.

Shalina pet Zeus. "Hi Zeusy," she said.

There was a chuckle, "There's my kids."

They looked up to see their in-demand director father. Julian Baker.

"Dad!" they exclaimed greeting him.

"What brings you here?" Liam asked.

"I'll let you guys know when your mom gets here."

"Sounds good," Shalina said.

"How about we grab dinner?" Julian said.

"Lets go," Shalina said. The trio said bye to Zeus and headed out.

Lucas was typing his proposal. There was a knock on the door, and he looked up. He smiled, "Hales," he said. "What brings you here?"

She walked in, "Just trying to see if I could see my favorite brother in law, and sneak past that new secretary of yours."

He chuckled and sat back, "And how was it?"

She smirked sitting on the seat across of him, "A walk in the park," she said.

He chuckled. "You and Penelope seems to get along."

"Yeah, she's nice. Nicer than the boozy you had."

"Hey, you like Peyton," he said.

She laughed, "I do. Peyton is nice." She leaned back, "So?"

"So?"

"What you working on?"

"My proposal for the meeting on Thursday."

"Ah, making proposals that get shut down."

He chuckled, "Yeah your right. I should just stop fighting for Tree Hill's voice to be heard."

"Oh what would we do without you Lucas Scott," Haley teased feigning desperation.

Just then there was a knock on the door. The two best friends looked up.

"Luke, there's a Dan Scott on the line for you," Brooke said.

Lucas closed his eyes and Haley smirked. "Tell him I'm in a meeting," he said.

"He says it's important."

"When isn't a thing important?" he asked muttering.

"Still avoiding him?" Haley asked.

"I have nothing to say to him," Lucas said in a matter of fact tone. "I moved out of that house 5 years ago to get away from him, and I'm not planning to say more to him."

"So should I tell him-" Brooke cut in.

"Tell him I'm in a meeting please," Lucas said ignoring the look from Haley.

Brooke nodded and walked out of the room.

"Don't Haley," Lucas said going through the file in front of him.

"You can't avoid him forever," Haley said.

"I can, and I will."
"Luke-"

"Hales, Nate chose to bend. I will not," He said.

Haley sighed in defeat, "Okay Luke. Okay."

Brooke saw her text. "Crap," she muttered. She called back the missed call.

"Hey Penny," he said answering.

"Cut that cuteness Julian," she said. "Where are my kids?"

"Our kids Pen, don't forget about that. We're just having dinner, why don't you join us?"

"I'm at work."

He chuckled, "I would have thought that $10,000/month alimony would keep you from working."

"What do you want Julian?" she asked.

"Penny, I'm just in town to see you guys. That's all."

She sighed seeing Lucas come out of the office. He was talking to one of the employees. "I have to go. Where are you staying?"

"Well, I was hoping la casa de Bakers."

She rolled her eyes, "Fine. I got to go," she said and hung up. She looked up seeing Lucas walk to her desk.

"Everything okay?" he asked.

"Yeah, um. My ex-husband is in town."

Lucas looked amused. "Oh?" he asked.

She sighed, "He is here for something," she said packing up her stuff.

"Need me to come supervise?" he asked jokingly.

Brooke smiled, "He's harmless," she said.

"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow." He said and was about to go back into his office. "Hey Brooke, tomorrow we're having a work dinner, and I usually bring my secretary for minutes and what not. You up for some wine and dine?"

"Uh, sure," she said.

"We'll talk more about it tomorrow."

"Okay."

He walked into his office.

Brooke sighed and closed up her desk, and stood up. When Julian was around it wasn't always a good thing. Especially for them. She headed out of the office.

…..

"So how have you been dad?" Liam asked as they settled down in the livingroom.

"Good. Just got back from Paris," Julian responded.

"Did you get me something dad?" Shalina asked.

He chuckled, "You know it."

Just then the door opened and closed.

"Mom!" Shalina exclaimed.

Julian and Liam looked up.

"Hey," Julian said.

"Julian," Brooke said nodding. "I see you settled."

He shrugged, "You know me Penny."

She inhaled and rolled her eyes at that fond name. "So? Care to share what you're doing here," she said raising an eyebrow.

"Come in, settle down first," he said.

"No thank you."

"Mom come on, dad is here to see us," Liam said.

Brooke scoffed, "Since when was it JUST a visit? He's ALWAYS here with a hidden agenda."

"Why can't I just see my family?" Julian asked. "You still use my name after all."

"Well, mine has too much history. For real Julian, why are you here?"

"I just miss my kids Pen. That's all."

"Okay, whatever. You can stay in Liam's room."

"Cool," Liam said.

"Alright, I'll go unpack," Julian said getting up. He looked over at Brooke, "We'll talk soon," he said smiling a bit, and went upstairs.

Brooke walked to the kitchen, and grabbed a bottle of wine from the fridge.

"You know mom, dad is trying," Shalina said joining her.

"Yeah, but he shows up and disappears. I don't know if that's trying," Brooke said.

"He works mom."

"Yeah, well, don't think he'll be around for good."

"Mom, I love you," Shalina said, "And I love dad. But you two need to work whatever it is between you guys out. Because dad said he's moving here."

Brooke raised an eyebrow, "Here?" she asked.

"To Tree Hill."

She scoffed, "That'll be the day."

"Mom," Shalina said giving her a look.

"Shal, all I'm saying is, for as long as I've known your dad, his word is never something you can depend on."

"Mom-"

"Just don't have your hopes up," she said and took a swig of the wine. "Because he will disappoint," she said, heading to her room with Zeus following.

Lucas was hanging at his brother's house. They were lounging by the pool.

"So, how is Mayor life bro?" Nathan asked.

He chuckled, "It's you know," he said shrugging.

"So Hales told me you have a a new secretary. Penelope Baker?" he asked.

"Yeah."

"You know who her husband is?" he asked raising an eyebrow.

"No," Lucas responded drinking his beer. "Am I suppose too?"

"It's Julian Baker," he said in a matter of fact tone.

"Okay?" Lucas asked.

"The guy who directed "Beckoning". Every film this guy directs blows up making him moolah," Nathan said drinking his beer.

"Oh I didn't know that."

"I mean they're divorced."

Lucas laughed, "Stalker much?" he asked.

"Nah, just a fan of his work," Nathan said. "Plus when Haley found out she talks non-stop of the Bakers."

"Well, that's nice."

"Have you done research on Penelope?"

"Meaning?"

"Background check, the whole work stuff."

"No."

He looked at Lucas, "No?"

He shrugged, "She seemed like she knew what she was doing."

"Lucas, it's not about that. It's about money, and protecting yourself."

Lucas shrugged, "I don't know. I just trust her that's all."

Nathan chuckled, "A pretty girl, and you're all googly-eyed. Same o'le Lucas."

"Hey," Lucas said. "Peyton wasn't just some pretty girl."

"Right, she's your ex who's married to one of our good friends," Lucas said.

"Okay, okay. I get it."

Nathan smiled, "Well, this is nice."

"Huh?"

"Brotherly bonding."

"Yeah, it's nice."

"Hey Jamie, play nice with Lily," Nathan said to his son that was playing in the shallow pool with his daughter.

Lucas chuckled and drank his beer.

Brooke was sitting on the couch with Zeus next to her. She was watching a re-run of 'Dawson's Creek'. "They are too cute," she said referring to the Pacey and Joey dynamic. She sipped the bottle of wine she had been sipping on.

"I knew I'd find you down here," he said.

She looked behind her, "Oh, it's you," she said rolling her eyes.

"Aw you know you miss me Pen," he said joining her.

"Me? Miss you?" she asked. "As if."

Julian sat on the one seat couch, "So how have you been Penelope?"

Brooke looked at him, "Same o'le. You? I heard you just came back from Paris?"

"Yeah. Just finished shooting a movie."

"Cool," she said nodding.

He sat his eyes scanning her. "You look good P," he said.

"Don't I?" she asked smiling a bit.

Silence fell upon them, and she went back to watching the show.

"How did I ever lose you?"

She looked at him. "You chose work over us," she said not looking at him.

"I am sorry."

She looked at him, "It was ages ago Julian. I'm over it."

"Are you?" he asked.

"Yes, I am."

Brooke didn't know where this conversation was coming from. She looked at Julian, "Why are you here Julian?" she asked again.

"I just want to be closer to the kids."

"Why now?"

"Can't you trust me Penelope?"

"No, I can't Julian," she said, and got up. "I'm going to bed."

"Penny-" he began to say.

"Goodnight Julian," she said, "C'mon Zeus," she called to the german shepherd, and headed to her room without looking back.
