This fic is sat right after "Home for the Holidays", therefore I decided to add it after chapter 25. Please let me know if this is a good idea or if I should rather post it as a separate fic.
The chapters and the fic will be shorter than "Home for the Holidays". It is a Christmas fic - originally it was supoosed to be a oneshot only - but I won't be able to post the entire fic before Christmas. I hope you all will enjoy "A Knight's Christmas" - I love to read your reviews.
Disclaimer: Glen A. Larson and Universal own the Knight Rider characters in this story.
A Knight's Christmas
Chapter 1
Michael glanced around the living room at the Foundation mansion in awe. This year, Bonnie and Devon had outdone themselves with their annual Christmas decoration. Everyone who sat foot into the mansion would feel as if they had entered a Christmas wonderland. Their decoration inside and outside looked stunning, elegant and breathtaking. The tree seemed to be taller than the years before and there were lights, wreaths, ornaments and candy canes everywhere. Bonnie and Devon had thought of everything – well, almost everything. One essential part of any Christmas decoration – for Michael the most important one - was missing: the mistletoes.
Michael wasn't surprised that Devon hadn't bothered to put at least one mistletoe up. Devon usually called this tradition a "ridiculous attempt by Michael to get Bonnie to kiss him" and always made sure to warn Bonnie or during her absence April whenever they were close to standing near one of the numerous mistletoes which Michael had hung up. April, who had enjoyed Michael's tradition and had deliberately chosen to stand below a mistletoe whenever Michael was nearby, had ignored Devon's warnings and had enjoyed every kiss she'd shared with Michael.
It was different with Bonnie who had played the hard to get game with him from the moment they met. Occasionally, Michael had been lucky, and Devon couldn't point it out to her in time. He had treasured those quick kisses which ended way too fast for him. Thinking back, he was surprised that Bonnie had willingly let him kiss her instead of slapping him, as they had had a rather rough start and hadn't always been friends. But even during this first year, when she was still calling him a "yo-yo", or "the nut behind the wheel and had constantly complained to Devon about Michael's recklessness, she hadn't been upset with him". She always protested of course but in a tone that told him that she didn't mind that he'd tricked her into kissing him. He had assumed it was her being in a good mood for Christmas. This year, he knew that every year, she had enjoyed these kisses as much as he had. Both had believed it was only a Christmas tradition or a joke on Michael's part and Bonnie had decided to play along. Deep down in their hearts neither had dared to hope that the other would return their feelings.
There was only one Christmas without his mistletoe tradition. The Christmas after Stevie's death. Michael barely remembered this past holiday. All he knew was that he had felt miserable and lonely. Most of the time, he had spent hidden either in his apartment or in his room at the mansion or at the cemetery visiting Stevie. Alone. Mourning his loss. Desperate. Unsure how he would be able to live on. Full of guilt and hatred because he hadn't been able to protect his wife. He had been lost and had been close to drowning in his grief if it hadn't been for Bonnie. She had found him and had come to his rescue, had been there for him, had listened to him and had made sure he didn't ruin his life. She had helped him cope with his grief, had told him that Stevie wouldn't want him to throw his life away. Without Bonnie, he doubted that he would still be around this year. She had been his Christmas angel who had saved him and had helped him find a way to live on without Stevie.
This year was different. Bonnie's words had changed his life and had given him a reason to feel alive again. And Bonnie was no longer his friend who helped him survive the hardest times in his life and move on with his life without forgetting how much Stevie meant to him. She was now the woman he was in love with and with whom he could fully be himself.
Three weeks ago, his life had taken an unexpected turn when he and Bonnie had spent Thanksgiving with her family and had admitted that they had feelings for each other. Remembering their first real kiss at her parent's house and at the inn on their way back and the first time they had made love upon their return to Los Angeles, the smile on his face grew bigger.
The last weeks had been the best weeks in a long time and every day, he woke up thankful to have Bonnie in his life. He dreaded being away from on assignments. So far, they had been lucky. Most cases hadn't required him to be gone for more than a few days. There had only been one assignment which had forced him to travel further away. Luckily, Bonnie and the semi tagged along and therefore he was able to see her briefly at least twice.
There was only one aspect which caused Bonnie to feel nervous and even guilt. They still hadn't told anyone about their relationship, neither her family, not Devon nor RC. Bonnie was used to keeping her private life to herseld. She had never shared too many details of her private life, especially when it came to men with Devon or her parents. Michael's dates and relationships on the other hand had never been a secret to anyone. Michael knew that Devon assumed Michael was still not ready to move on after having lost Stevie and he didn't mind letting him believe this. As much as Bonnie wanted to tell Devon the truth, she was worried that Devon wouldn't approve of their relationship and ask her to choose between Michael and her work. This was something that Bonnie would never be able to do.
