A Knight's Christmas
Chapter 4
Devon hung up the phone angrily and rested his head in his arms. Both phone calls had been rather infuriating, and he was not content with the news he had received. He had to inform his team about what he had just learned, and he already anticipated their reactions: protests, complaints, maybe even some tears. News that most of the members of this team would not take well, he gathered.
He sighed. This wouldn't be easy to explain to all of them and he wished it would only concern him and not the others as well.
Finally, he stood up from his chair and left his office to look for the rest of his team. There was no point in postponing the inevitable.
He found RC in the kitchen taking in the heavenly smell of freshly baked cookies while at the same time waiting for the Foundation's cook to leave the kitchen for a moment so that he could steal some of the them. To his regret, his boss ordered him to come with him before he had a chance to at least try one of the delicious chocolate chip cookies.
"Boss, can't this wait?" RC complained while Devon ushered him out of the kitchen. "There are cookies! I was this close to sneak a bunch of them out for us."
Devon didn't pay attention to RC's complaints. Secretly, however, he was laughing about the young man's excitement about cookies. This behavior reminded him of Michael who could be as excited about freshly baked cookies as Reginald was.
"They taste so yummy when they are still warm and chewy. You gotta try this. It's awesome. The best thing you've ever tried." RC continued raving about the delicious cookies the cook prepared every year. Why couldn't Devon understand that eating cookies while they were still warm was an important and essential part of Christmas?
"I doubt it, Reginald." Devon chuckled, amused by the young man's culinary taste. "They can't be more delicious than scones which you enjoy with cream tea. This is a Cornish tradition, Reginald. The best scones are made in Cornwall."
"See? I knew you'd understand. Your scones are my cookies." RC smiled at his boss and looked at him expectantly. "Now, can we go back to the kitchen to sneak out a few cookies for me?"
"I'm afraid, your cookies will have to wait." The smile disappeared from RC's face and he stared at Devon in disappointment as his boss led him towards the hall of the mansion. "I have some unpleasant news to share with you and the rest of the team which cannot wait until our cook will have left the kitchen. Which I reckon is rather unlikely as she must have realized what you had in mind judging from the hungry look in your eyes."
"That's not fair. They'll be cold by the time I get back there." RC mumbled sadly. "Wait a minute! Unpleasant news? What can be more unpleasant than me not getting any cookies?"
"You will find out soon." He wasn't going to go more into detail now. Not until he would have found Michael and Bonnie as well.
"I'm sure there will be another chance for you to devour warm cookies, Reginald." While he enjoyed a scone or a biscuit to his tea, Devon never understood why RC and Michael were so excited about freshly baked chocolate cookies. This was another American tradition Devon didn't share with his team members. "Now, where could Michael possibly be hiding?"
"I have no clue, boss." RC shrugged. "I haven't seen him yet today. He might be sleeping in. Didn't he return in the middle of the night?"
"That's correct, Reginald. He finished his case faster than expected." Devon wondered whether RC could be right, and Michael was still asleep. It was certainly a possibility. "I wouldn't be surprised if he was still in bed."
"I saw Bonnie in the living room earlier." RC told Devon. "Maybe she's still there."
Devon nodded. "Well, let us look for her then."
They turned around the corner and finally reached the entrance hall from where they headed into the living room. As expected, Bonnie was still there and she wasn't alone.
Both RC and Devon's eyes went wide as much to their surprise they found Michael and Bonnie standing in front of the fireplace sharing a kiss.
RC stared at them open-mouthed while Devon was so astonished that he was lost for words for a moment. Briefly, he wondered if he had missed that his agent, who was like a son to him, had found a new female victim who had fallen for his charm - his cyber technician, who was like a daughter to him. He shook off that thought quickly. Bonnie had never expressed any interest in Michael to him. He would certainly know if she had any hidden feelings for her co-worker. Michael on the other hand had flirted intensely with her when they had started working together. He had never made it a secret that he had been interested in Bonnie. She seemed to be the only woman who wasn't susceptible to his charm though. However, Devon had noticed that Michael's interest in Bonnie had dwindled over the years and since Stevie's death, Michael had stopped chasing after women entirely.
Lately, Devon suspected that Michael started having flings again. Bonnie, however, wasn't someone who'd want to be a fling. No, Bonnie couldn't possibly be kissing Michael for fun. There had to be a good explanation for this kiss and Devon hoped it was an explanation that wouldn't confirm the suspicion he just had.
He cleared his throat to make himself noticed but neither Bonnie nor Michael seemed to hear him.
"What in the world is going on here?"
