A Knight's Christmas

Chapter 5

Bonnie and Michael were so lost in their kiss that they hadn't paid any attention to their surroundings. Their kiss had already lasted for a while and Michael had no intention of breaking it off anytime soon. He could spend the rest of the day kissing Bonnie and wouldn't grow tired of doing so.

Bonnie never thought she'd enjoy feeling Michael's lips playing with hers so much. She had no idea how long they'd been kissing when she believed she heard a noise which sounded like someone was clearing his throat. Was someone in the room? Or was it her imagination?

She opened her eyes to find out if they were still alone when she heard Devon exclaim. "What in the world is going on here?"

He had finally found his voice again. This time, they noticed him.

It wasn't her imagination. Devon was standing in front of them and was looking at them in disbelief while RC was smiling from ear to ear.

Even though there was an explanation for their kiss, Bonnie had hoped to avoid a situation like this. She felt her face turn pink again while she immediately moved away from Michael. "Stop it." She quickly hissed remembering that she was supposed to be annoyed.

Michael grinned at Devon and pointed to the ceiling. "Mistletoe."

Devon sighed. Of course. He had forgotten about Michael's silly tradition. It had been two years since the last time Michael had decorated the mansion with mistletoes. Last year, he hadn't cared. It was the first Christmas after Stevie's death and Michael hadn't been in his usual mood for Christmas.

"Or what did you think was going on here?" Although Michael was aware that Bonnie was feeling uncomfortable because Devon had walked in on their kiss, he couldn't help asking this question.

"For a moment, I was beginning to question Bonnie's taste in men. This was before you showed me the mistletoe." Devon shook his head. He felt sorry for Bonnie whom he considered a victim of this tradition every year. "Really, Michael, you are lucky Bonnie is playing along with your childish tradition and hasn't sued you for sexual harassment yet."

RC burst out in laughter. He didn't regret anymore that he had missed out on his cookies.

"Nah, Bonnie wouldn't do that. Right, Bon?" Michael smiled at her, hoping his joke would help her to feel less awkward. "She knows it's a tradition. A tradition which I happen to like a lot."

"You are pushing your luck, Michael. I might consider Devon's suggestion if you overdo it." Bonnie playfully glared at him.

"I was hoping you wouldn't continue your silly tradition, Michael. It was pleasant to have a break from it last year though I wish the reasons for your pause had been different." Devon said quietly. He was well aware that Bonnie's resistance towards Michael's tradition seemed to have declined this year. He made a mental note to have a word with her about this. She didn't have to play along to Michael's silly game, only to keep him in a good mood.

"What tradition, boss?" RC asked confused. This was his second Christmas at FLAG but he hadn't heard of Michael's tradition yet.

"Reginald, Michael has been decorating the mansion with sprigs of mistletoes for the last couple of years to get the female employees, especially his closest co-worker here, as well as all our female guest to kiss him." Devon explained while raising his eyebrow. "You can imagine that several husbands who happen to be donors as well were not amused when their wives were kissed by our Prince Charming here." Devon remembered having to apologize to several couple afterwards. "Don't follow his example, Reginald."

"I….I…. wasn't even thinking about it." RC stuttered in surprise. "Unless ….. Bonnie wants to kiss me. I'm a really good kisser by the way."

Michael grinned while Bonnie came to RC's rescue. "Well, it is a tradition. And if you catch me standing under a mistletoe, then I guess I'll have to kiss you too, RC."

This caused Devon to shake his head again and RC to smile happily.

"You see, RC, I started this tradition because I love the Christmas season. The first Christmas season I worked here seemed to be so formal and stiff, so I decided to spice it up a little." Michael was still grinning. This was the first time he had kissed Bonnie and he still remembered this kiss.

"Stiff and formal. My dear boy." Devon kept shaking his head. "I had to warn Bonnie every time she walked into a room. No wonder she decided not to return for our Christmas ball the year after when she wasn't working here. You were the only one who thought this was funny. Oh, and April of course."

"Bonnie's gotten used to my sense of humor by now." Michael smiled hoping Devon wouldn't go into detail on how much April enjoyed his tradition.

Luckily, RC was more interested in his friendship with Bonnie.

"By now?" RC asked curiously.

"You see, RC, when we started working together, Bonnie kind of hated me and didn't even talk to me unless she yelled at me or complained that I had abused KITT again. Hard to believe since she's my best friend now, right? But not in our first year as a team. She was resistant to the famous Michael Knight charm. There was nothing I could do to convince her that I was a nice guy and not the nut behind the wheel. That was her nickname for me." Michael explained to RC. He was glad that things were different now.

"Hey, that's not fair. You make me sound so mean." Bonnie interrupted him. "I agreed to let you take me out for my birthday."

"But only because you knew I'd be away on an assignment and wouldn't be able to actually be back for your birthday." Michael defended himself. He remembered the sad look in her eyes when he realized that he had forgotten her birthday.

"You would have forgotten my birthday anyway, even if you'd been in town." Bonnie's voice sounded harsh now. She had looked forward to going out with Michael that day and remembered how disappointed she had been when he hadn't even called to wish her a happy birthday. Devon had stepped in and had invited her to dinner. They had enjoyed a nice evening but deep down in her heart Bonnie had felt hurt because she believed that Michael didn't care about her.

"Stop the childish bickering. Why is it that the two of you constantly behave like children fight over sweets and toys?" Devon gave them a stern look which made Bonnie and Michael immediately stop their quarrelling. "You are becoming more like siblings every day."

"Whoa, boss. You sound like you someone who got up on the wrong side of the bed." RC interjected. "First, you don't let me have cookies and now you're yelling at Michael and Bonnie."

"RC's right. Something isn't right. Usually, you just sit back and chuckle whenever Bonnie yells at me." Michael said agreeing with RC. "My mistletoe tradition can't be the only reason why you seem so upset."

Devon sighed. His team knew him well enough to sense that there was another reason for his angry mood. What he was about to tell them wouldn't be pleasant and would ruin all their plans for the holidays.

"Well, I have to admit that you are right, Michael." He sat down on one of the chairs. "I will have to break some rather unpleasant news to you. I reckon you sit down."
