A Knight's Christmas
Chapter 8
Noticing that Michael was trying to catch up with her, Bonnie turned around and slapped him on his arm playfully. "Don't even think about it! You already tricked me earlier."
"But Bonnie, it's a tradition." Michael kept pointing to the swig which he had hung up above the door.
"Not this time." She laughed and followed RC to the hallway.
"Oh, Michael? There is indeed one more thing which I have to talk to you about." Michael cringed and stopped his pursuit when he heard Devon's voice. Devon had already told them to cancel their plans and Michael had promised not to do anything to upset the board. What else could he want now?
Devon's comment made RC and Bonnie turn around curiously as well.
"This only concerns Michael, however a reminder to all of you might be a good idea." Devon's voice sounded serious which caused Michael to wonder what he had done this time. He hadn't spent too much money on the last cases, and he hadn't promised any benefits from the Foundation to any of their clients either. There hadn't been unnecessary turbo boasting or damages to KITT. He wasn't guilty of anything – unless it had something to do with him and Bonnie.
Devon cleared his throat. This was rather embarrassing for him and he wished he wouldn't have to have a conversation like this with any member of his team. "Please don't let any of your female friends spend the night in your room at the mansion again."
All eyes were on Michael as he tried to come up with a good answer.
"What…what do you mean, Devon?" Michael finally stuttered. Bonnie looked at him and Devon nervously. She had been the only woman in Michael's room lately.
"Well, last night I was up late for a phone call to England. On my way back from my office, when I walked by your door, I was able to hear some unmistakable noises from your room. Unless you were using your bed as trampoline, you certainly know what I'm implying." Devon explained dryly and Michael noticed that Devon was not amused by this. "You know the rules, Michael. No overnight guests in the mansion."
His old bed. He'd meant to ask for a new boxspring and mattress but had been too preoccupied to remember. Just his luck. Technically, he hadn't broken a rule as Bonnie wasn't a guest. He wouldn't mention this to Devon though.
"There is too much sensible information in the mansion, and I'd appreciate it if none of you – this includes Reginald and Bonnie as well – would have guests staying in your rooms in the mansion. Therefore, I'd suggest that you either avoid doing any misleading fitness activities in your room or continue seeing your lady friend either in your apartment or in hers." Devon hoped never having to have a conversation like this again with anyone of his team. "I don't think Bonnie wants to listen to your nightly activities given the fact that her room is next to yours."
RC grinned at Bonnie whose face turned into a bright red. "It's a good thing you sleep like a rock. Honestly, boss, there could be an explosion and she wouldn't hear it. It's hardly possible to wake her up if she takes a nap in the semi."
"I've noticed, Reginald." Devon turned his attention back to Michael.
"Yes, sir." Michael avoided looking at Devon. At least their secret was still safe. "Won't happen again."
"I'd appreciate it, Michael. You should be thankful for Bonnie's sound sleep." Devon knew that he shouldn't be so hard on Michael. It was a good sign that he had started his Christmas tradition again and seemed to be interested in women again. However, this also concerned the safety of their work and therefore he couldn't be lenient.
"Am I dismissed now?" Michael hoped their conversation was over. He felt like a teenager who had been caught by his parents with a girl in his room.
"You are. Now, get back to work. All of you." Devon took his papers and left the living room through the door in the back.
Bonnie, RC, and Michael watched him leave in silence. No one dared to say a word and Bonnie instantly prayed RC wouldn't be ask any curious questions about Michael's guest.
Michael shared Bonnie's fear and therefore decided to distract RC from wanting to find out more about his overnight guest. "Cookies?"
"You bet." RC smiled at him brightly. Michael was his friend, and he wouldn't bug him for details as Michael clearly didn't want to talk about the mystery guest in his room. RC didn't need details anyways. He was good at reading people and he had noticed that his friends were closer since returning from Boston after Thanksgiving. Judging from the nervous glances both Bonnie and Michael had exchanged during Devon's lecture, he believed that his suspicion that they were more than friends was confirmed. "Are you joining us, Bonnie?"
Bonnie shook her head. "No, I'll have to work on those lists for Devon. And then I'll have to make some phone calls and tell my family that I won't be able to make it for Christmas."
She was glad that she had been able to see them on Thanksgiving. Emily and Jack would understand that she couldn't be there. Luckily, Devon hadn't made Michael work over Christmas. Since he was looking forward to celebrating Christmas with him, him being away on an assignment would have been worse than not being able to go home.
"Are you sure you don't wanna take Devon up on his offer? I mean it's the private jet. You'd feel like a celebrity." RC wouldn't have hesitated to accept Devon's offer. He pictured himself in the jet, wearing nice clothes and sunglasses and enjoying a drink or a beer. Bonnie wouldn't even know she was in a plane.
"It was sweet of him to offer me the jet, but no. I'm not flying. He'd have to drug me before I'd set foot in a plane." She wasn't honest. She would have considered using the Foundation jet despite her fear. But not without Michael. She would have felt safe with him. But she couldn't ask Devon to allow Michael to join her. Not yet at least. Worst of all, Michael would be alone then. He was the only one of them without family and he couldn't go anywhere because his own family thought he was dead. This was the main reason why she had turned down the offer.
"Let's get you those cookies, RC before the cook hides them from you." Michael interrupted them as they reached the kitchen door and RC immediately sneaked into the kitchen.
"I'll see you later under a mistletoe, Bon. Oh, there's already one." He quickly added once RC was out of sight.
"How convenient." Bonnie gave him a quick kiss before she headed towards Devon's office.
"Lucky me. I love my tradition" Michael grinned and joined RC in the kitchen.
