Surprises (A Valentine's Day fiction)
Chapter 1
Assignments and cases were keeping Michael occupied once the new year had begun. Time flew by and January passed within a blink. Suddenly, it was February, a month with a well-known holiday for people in love.
It was no secret that Michael Knight wasn't good at remembering birthdays, anniversaries, or appointments. Luckily, he could always rely on his partner to remind him in time on these occasions.
For the last few years, since he had become Michael Knight, Michael hadn't paid much attention to Valentine's Day. This year would be different thanks to a beautiful brunette cyber technician who had managed to steal his heart. This year, he knew exactly that February 14th would be coming up soon and he was already wrecking his brain about planning a special surprise for Bonnie.
"Michael, may I ask you a question?" The voice of his partner coming out of the voice box startled Michael. They had been on the road for hours. Hours which seemed endless to Michael who couldn't wait for them to finally pull into the driveway of the Foundation's mansion.
"Michael?" Kitt asked his driver again. He didn't wait for him to answer as a quick scan of Michael's vitals showed him that his partner was awake, aware of his question, and listening to him. "It's Valentine's Day next week. You didn't forget, did you?"
"I thought you'd never ask." Michael's laugh filled the cabin of the black Trans Am. He had been waiting for Kitt to start asking him questions about Valentine's Day. In the first year of their partnership Kitt's questions had been filled by curiosity. He hadn't been familiar with the concept of love yet, let alone with the idea that there was a holiday especially for people in love. The next year, after having been witness to Michael running into Stevie, he understood why people feel in love and acted differently when their heart was broken. Still, it had astonished him that one had to be reminded to tell the people who they love that they are special. After having watched Michael been devastated about having lost the woman he loved, he was now happy to see him cheerful and in love again. Especially since the woman Michael truly loved was someone KITT deeply cared about.
"Since when are you interested in Valentine's Day, buddy?" Michael chuckled, still amused by the AI's reminder. "Ah, I know! Bonnie set you up to it, didn't she? She made you promise you'd ask me to remind me." Memories of having forgotten her birthday the year they had met came back to him. The hurt and sad look in her eyes when he had realized that he hadn't even thought about calling her.
"Of course not, Michael. Bonnie would never do anything like this." KITT quickly defended Bonnie. It hadn't been her idea. Bonnie hadn't mentioned Valentine's Day in his presence. Probably because she had been busy and preoccupied with her work. She usually kept quiet about her relationship with Michael, also around KITT, as she had promised not to make him lie to Devon. "RC3 mentioned Valentine's Day a few times. Of course, not concerning you and Bonnie. He needed my opinion on a matter." RC3 was still trying to impress April Curtis who he seemed to have fallen for. "I'm simply making sure you won't forget. It's not just a Valentine's Day for you this year. It is your first Valentine's Day with Bonnie, and this day should be special for both for you. Besides, I don't want her to be mad at you. Or at me, in case you forget." Kitt added quickly.
"Nah, Bonnie wouldn't be mad at either of us. You know Bonnie. She isn't like most women. She doesn't care about materialistic things. It's the small things which matter to her. Like me bringing her coffee when she'd too focused on her work. She probably hasn't even noticed yet that Valentine's Day is coming up, given the workload she's juggling right now." Whenever Bonnie was preoccupied with computations or working on new devices for KITT, everything around her faded and she stopped paying attention to time. There were enough men who'd take advantage of this and hope that she wouldn't notice Valentines Day. But not Michael. He'd move the Earth for her, and he would make sure she'd leave her workstation that day.
"I won't forget, Kitt, I promise." Michael reassured his partner, still amused by his behavior. The A.I. had been very supportive of Michael's relationship with Bonnie which Michael was very grateful for. Though they promised not to use KITT to cover for them, he had helped Michael see Bonnie on several occasions. Sometimes KITT had pretended that his systems needed to be checked which would require a visit to the semi to see Bonnie. This allowed Michael to spend a few minutes with her during an assignment or while they were at work.
Almost three months had passed since their first kiss. Their relationship had begun on Thanksgiving when Michael had driven Bonnie to her family's house in Boston. On their way back to Los Angeles, they had finally had the courage to admit to each other that they had feelings for each other.
"You know, KITT, the last few months with Bonnie have been the best weeks in my life, apart from the time when I was engaged to Stevie." It was true, Michael hadn't been as happy in a long time. Being with Bonnie made him feel alive again. This year had been the first time since he had become Michael Knight that he'd enjoyed Christmas. He had surprised Bonnie with a stay at The Riesling Inn in Napa where they had spent a few unforgettable days. Days which made him love her even more than he could have ever imagined.
"Wouldn't now be the right time to tell Mr Miles?" KITT asked carefully, interrupting Michael reminiscing about their vacation in Napa.
Michael sighed. He knew KITT was right. They finally had to tell Devon the truth. Both of them hated lying to him. However, they were afraid Devon wouldn't approve their relationship. They were surprised Devon hadn't figured it out by now. Although Bonnie and Michael had been very careful, there had been a few close calls. There were also a few things that they couldn't hide, such as the smile on Bonnie's face when Michael pulled into the semi, Michael's constant excuses that something might be wrong with KITT so that he could see Bonnie, or the long hugs they gave each other before Michael left. Although it became harder to find excuses to be around Bonnie, Devon didn't seem to have noticed that they were a couple. Michael often wondered if he was entirely oblivious to the idea that two members of his team could fall in love.
"I know we should tell him, KITT, but we have no idea how to break the news. As much as he cares about me, he probably thinks I could hurt Bonnie and that our relationship could be harmful for our work." Michael mumbled: KITT was able to hear the sad tone in Michael's voice. "This is what Bonnie is worried about. That Devon will make us choose between our love and our commitment to the Foundation."
"He wouldn't make you choose." KITT said. "I don't like having a secret from him, April and RC."
"Me too, buddy. I hate lying to him. We should have clued him in on Christmas. Bonnie was so close to confessing when April interrupted them. But I promise we'll tell him soon." Michael assured him. KITT was right. Devon deserved to know the truth. The longer they were hiding their relationship, the more disappointed Devon would be that he wasn't told sooner.
A long sigh escaped Michael's mouth before he decided to move on to a different topic. One which required KITT's insight and help so that Michael could plan a special Valentine's Day for Bonnie. "So about Valentine's Day, I was thinking, maybe dinner and a movie. And flowers, of course. What do you think?"
"Try harder, Michael." Kitt replied dryly as the finally arrived at the Foundation's headquarters.
