Chapter 8: Moonshine
"Kudo-kun?" There was a knock at the door and the detective inside the dark room flinched at the light that filtered inside, "it's almost time."
The detective nodded but didn't move and Haibara sighed. She entered the room and closed the door behind her, enshrouding the room in darkness once again. She sat next to him on the bed but the detective kept his gaze forward, not looking at anything in particular.
"Kudo-kun?"
He jolted and looked at her, his eyes red-rimmed and swollen, "ah, sorry Haibara, what were you saying?"
She had never known the detective to cry, ever.
"Are you worried?" She asked quietly and he rubbed his face. His true face.
"Incredibly," he replied tersely.
They had an awkward revelation the previous night before he called Ran to "break up" with her. She glanced at the window where the moonlight of the full moon filtered through as she remembered.
"So, was there a reason you wanted to come here tonight Kudo-kun?" She asked as the boy stared listlessly at the wall.
"I," he paused as he carefully thought about his words, "I need to break things off with Ran, for good. I couldn't be there when I did."
Haibara's eyebrows lifted but she knew the reason. She refrained from rolling her eyes because her thoughts of the possessive magician were best kept to herself. "You are? Why?"
He hesitated and then tried to come up with some lame excuse about how he didn't know if they would ever get a cure for Apoptoxin or if they did if she would still be waiting for him at the end and finally she sighed.
"Kudo-kun, there's something you should know," she sat down next to him and he blushed as she took his hand in hers. "It's Kaitou Kid, isn't it?"
He looked at her in surprise, "h-how did you know that?"
She took in a deep breath, "tomorrow at midnight when Kaitou Kid's heist ends, his body will begin to go through a change. The powers of the king that have laid dormant for eight years inside will be awakened and manifest inside of him. At the time of the solstice, he will begin to deteriorate if he has not taken his mate at that time. It is knowledge all vampires have."
He was smart, she knew, so she wasn't surprised when he pulled his hand away from her in realization, "H-Haibara, you are-?"
Her lips curved in a sad smile. It was understandable that he was afraid. The stupid magician had called her again and asked something of her that put her in a tight spot so she had no choice but to explain herself. "It's true. I was born of two vampires so it is merely common knowledge. The Vampire King must take a mate before the inheritance of his powers lest those powers consume him from the inside. I'm not well acquainted with the magician but I know that you have been chosen as his intended." She sighed, "I know that you were with him after he rescued you from the people that kidnapped you. The antidote, I was the one that gave it to him."
Conan looked away from her and stared at the floor, "why?" His voice was quiet, "if you knew I was there, why didn't you help me? When did you come?"
Haibara sighed as she crossed her arms, "I didn't know you were there until he called me to ask for the antidote."
"And you gave it to him?" Conan asked and his voice rose in volume.
"I had to!" She shouted back, "I had to give it to him because he threatened to take you away!"
They both went silent and Haibara sat back, "his powers are limited, but he can still wipe memories. If I'd refused him the antidote, I'm sure he would have wiped your mind of everyone you know and taken you somewhere far away."
Conan sat quietly and processed the information, "but he's Kaitou Kid, would he-?"
Haibara's sideways glance was all the answer he needed. "We are vampires. Although this curse has been bestowed upon us, we still cherish life as much as humans do. For someone like him who hasn't lived for long, holding you hostage was something he was willing to do to survive. It didn't matter about yours or anyone else's feelings."
She reached over and pulled down his collar, the place where Kaito bit him still visible, "he gave you this mark to show you are his."
Conan shrugged her hand away, "it still hasn't healed."
"It's not going to," she sighed. She clenched her hands together, "I'll admit, I did it to save you and in exchange for me doing it, he brought you back but I don't want to go against him. His presence is already frightening to me, but I will always comply if it means you can remain here. I know he won't hesitate when it comes to you."
She looked at him then and smirked, "so, now you know I'm an accomplice in your assault, will you have me arrested?"
He looked at her as well before he snorted, "idiot, there's no way."
She smiled and then looked at the phone in his hand, "so you're going to break up with her? Do you want me to hold your hand?"
He stood up, "hah? It's not that serious! I'm going to the spare room."
She watched as he went up the stairs and she scoffed quietly, "stupid, don't say that when your hands are trembling like that."
She blinked out of her memory and sighed, "I'm sorry for doing this to you again."
He hummed as he stared at the moonlight.
"Can I ask why you're doing this?" She asked.
"What do you mean?" He crossed his legs.
"You're giving yourself up to his whims. You don't have to, so why?"
He laughed, "he told me that he would die if I didn't. If that's really the case, I couldn't live with myself if I could save him and didn't." He ran a hand through his hair, "and you said so yourself if I refuse, he may do something regrettable. Either I come willingly, or I don't."
"Are you attracted to him?" She watched as he paused, "even if you don't love him, you wouldn't even consider it if you hated him."
"He interests me, but attraction is pushing it. He has helped me numerous and I have returned the favor. I look forward to attending his heists, I look forward to outsmarting him, I look forward to the conflict I only get with him. We are two sides of the same coin but I never imagined myself in this kind of situation with him."
"You know what he's going to do to you right?"
"I'm avoiding the thought. If I think about it, I may run away like a coward."
"In this situation, I think that reaction is acceptable."
"How long do I have before the antidote wears off?" He asked as he stood.
"It should wear off around noon tomorrow," she stood as well, "things will be very different then."
"Yes," he touched the mark that Kaito gave to him, "I can imagine."
Kaito sent Jii to pick him up and take to the heist. It was only ten minutes so Kaito wouldn't be long and would meet them soon after as Jii explained. Some of the taskforce whispered gossip as they watched Kudo Shinichi stand around the heist location. He sighed as he waited for 23:50 to come. He didn't know why Kaito insisted that he come to the heist instead of going straight to his house. He had a pang of anxiety hit him and he realized that's probably exactly why Kaito didn't request it. He was so nervous, it made his hands tremble and his palms sweaty. He clenched his fists and bit his lip as he glanced at his watch. Three minutes until showtime.
The heist location was atop a building with window panels that overlooked the city although those panels were currently closed as Nakamori thought it would be too much of an escape risk for Kaitou Kid. Shinichi snorted to himself, a pair of handcuffs was too much of an escape risk for Kaitou Kid.
He scratched his cheek unconsciously, still cursing Nakamori for his rough treatment. He glanced around the room at all of the officers. The majority of them were still with their hands behind their backs, some of them glanced around like he did, some of them looked dead on their feet and then there were the special few who glanced at him every once in a while and whispered to their colleagues like high school girls.
He rolled his eyes just as the lights went out. He leaned against the wall as he heard Nakamori barking out orders. The magician would surely get away again, he'd already secured the jewel and his escape route.
A singular light came on, and Kaito levitated above the glass case holding the jewel. "Oops," he gasped in fake surprise, "I've been caught."
He reached his hand into the glass case, the solid glass case, and grabbed the jewel and slowly pulled his hand out. Nakamori screamed at his troops to start moving but Kaito was propelled back toward the ceiling the moment they moved and the light went out again.
"Get the lights back on! What's taking so long?!" Shinichi could hear Nakamori shouting in the darkness and suddenly he felt something brush up against him.
He tensed up and waited and then it happened again and he opened his mouth to shout but a hand covered it before he could make a sound. The officers were shining flashlights around the room but he was tucked into a small corner by himself.
"Quiet," the voice was soft and the detective's breathing came a bit faster but then he saw a faint violet glow flash in his vision before it disappeared just as fast. He relaxed a little and the hand left his mouth. He barely got a breath in before his mouth was covered again and this time, it wasn't a hand.
A squeak left his throat as he realized Kaito's lips were on his. The magician wrapped a hand around his back and pressed their bodies together. He gasped as Kaito's leg found its way between his and the magician took advantage and slipped his tongue between his lips. He tried to push him away but Kaito grabbed his wrists and pushed him against the wall.
He didn't intend to let Kaito do as he pleased but his thoughts had become distracted with the leg that rubbed against his rapidly hardening erection. He couldn't escape the vampire's grip and closed his eyes although it didn't matter in the darkness. He pushed back against Kaito relishing in the friction he received in exchange and he relaxed in the magician's grip. He touched Kaito's warm tongue with his own and realized it felt different than the first time. He tilted his head back to take a breath but Kaito followed him and a breathy moan escaped as the magician pressed more into him.
The magician's hand tangled in his hair and pulled his head back gently for a better angle. His body was so warm and he needed to come so badly.
"Kaito," he breathed, and he vaguely heard Nakamori still shouting and he reached out his free hand to touch the magician but the heat consuming him disappeared. He blinked a few times as his hazy bubble dispersed and the magician was nowhere to be seen.
He heard a strange noise and then the window panels began moving, revealing the beautiful sparkling lights outside of the window as well as Kaito on the ledge, holding the jewel to the moon.
He swallowed as Kaito glanced back at him with a smirk as he kissed the stolen gem.
"Stupid magician," he blushed as he tried to fix his pants to hide his erection and touched his lips. "Shit."
He gasped as he suddenly saw Kaito jerk, and there were shouts from the task force as he fell from the ledge. There were shouts from all the radios that Kaitou Kid had been shot and fell off the building.
His legs moved before his mind did and then he began calculating the quickest way down to the main floor. He was on the top floor of this 32 storey building and he had too much to risk taking the elevator.
A few seconds later, he was blinded by the bright lights that came back on and he groaned as he covered his eyes. He leaned against the wall and blinked a few times as he cursed the magician for timing the generator. He was surprised when whatever he was leaning on began moving and he jolted but a hand grabbed his arm and pulled on him. He still couldn't see but he had been pulled inside of a dark room and he was in a similar position as his previous one and pressed against the door.
"Kaito?" He blinked rapidly to allow his eyes to adjust to the light and he heard the magician's heavy breathing, suddenly the magician collapsed in his arms and Shinichi went down with him, "oi! Are you hurt? Did you really get shot?"
He groped around for his flashlight and clicked it on and gasped at the amount of blood surrounding the magician's right shoulder. He pushed against the wound and Kaito grunted in pain.
"I know," Shinichi thought about all his first aid experience and felt around the magician's shoulder, "the bullet went through Kaito. We need to get you to the hospital."
"N-no," Kaito panted and tried to sit up but Shinichi kept him down.
"If you don't get help, you're going to die."
Kaito reached for Shinichi's hand and pulled the detective down. He wrapped his arm around Shinichi's back and the detective pushed against him before he felt Kaito breath on his neck.
His heart raced and Kaito didn't hesitate. His fangs pierced through Shinichi's neck and Shinichi's eyes widened as Kaito fed from him.
He could feel the bullet wound close beneath his hand and he gasped and tried to pull away but Kaito held him firm.
"Kaito, let go!" He was surprised the magician did as he was asked but the magician kissed him again and the detective grimaced at the coppery taste of blood.
A half gasp moan left his mouth when his only just settled erection flared up again when Kaito raised his knee in between his legs again and for a moment he shamelessly rubbed himself against that leg like a dog in heat.
The magician flipped their positions, suddenly, and it knocked the air from Shinichi's lungs. "Be careful, idiot!" He said in irritation and glared up at the magician who stared down at him with illuminated violet irises. A smirk touched Kaito's mouth and Shinichi glanced at his shoulder. The blood-soaked the white fabric a deep red and Shinichi reached up to touch the hole in the fabric that was left from the bullet.
"Is it fine now?"
Kaito moved his shoulder around before he smirked at his captive, "it is, thanks to you."
Shinichi blushed deeply and looked away from the magician's intense gaze. Kaito finally stood up and pulled the detective up with him. The magician glanced out of the window in the storage room they were in and watched the helicopters flying about searching for him. He looked back at Shinichi who studied his face as if trying to read his mind.
"What are you planning?" The detective questioned almost immediately.
Kaito merely smirked and leaned in for a kiss, "Be a good boy and stay with Jii-chan. He'll pick you up from the entrance."
Shinichi frowned as Kaito let him go and went to the window. He twitched in longing as he watched Kaito jump up on the ledge and look over, probably to see how far up this window was from the ground. He then looked up and Shinichi watched his violet eyes flicker and follow the movements of a helicopter flying overhead.
The magician must've felt his stares and glanced back at him. A soft smile crossed his lips and he came back over to wrap his arms around Shinichi. "I'd seen my mother give my father this look so many times, and I never understood why. But being on this side of it, I understand now." He brushed the pad of his thumb over the dark circles under Shinichi's eyes, "don't worry, Meitantei. I will be fine. I swear I will meet you at home, so be there for me?"
Shinichi had gotten distracted by the faint glow of Kaito's eyes and after a moment's hesitation, he nodded.
His legs mechanically took him down to the lobby and out of the building before he realized what was happening.
"Shinichi-sama," Shinichi glanced to Jii who waved him out of his trance. "Are you alright?"
"Yes," Shinichi blinked a few times to clear his head of his haze, "yes, I'm alright."
"Come along. The Young Master has assured me that he will arrive at the manor shortly after us."
Shinichi nodded and followed Jii to the car. The old man watched the young detective stare blankly at through the rearview mirror as he pulled off toward the Kuroba Manor.
"Young Master should arrive soon," Jii commented as they arrived. "I will be elsewhere for the night so please take care."
"Thank you Jii-chan," Shinichi expressed quietly as he got out of the car.
He went straight into the kitchen to boil water for coffee when he entered. He waited in the silence and clamped his trembling hands together. He couldn't understand why he was so afraid. He thought about how Kaito touched him at the heist and closed his eyes. His emotions were all over the place and he couldn't help but bring his thoughts to Ran.
He really hurt her. He could hear it in her voice as she called his name. He didn't want to acknowledge it but it was for the best. He didn't need to keep stringing her along as he was. He sighed again and buried his head in his hands. And then there was Kaito.
He jumped as the boiler beeped and he reached with shaky hands to pour himself a cup of coffee.
What would he do? He didn't know how far his attraction went but he didn't want to make a fatal mistake. He took a sip of the coffee and hummed. It calmed him the tiniest bit.
He heard a thump from above and he breathed another shaky sigh. He waited, five minutes, ten minutes, but Kaito never came down so he downed his coffee and trailed up the stairs.
He knocked on Kaito's door but didn't receive an answer. "Kuroba?"
He didn't believe that Kaito just fell asleep, not on an important night such as this one, and knocked again. "Kaito?" He pushed the door open and gasped as he rushed to the magician who was face down on the floor still in his Kaitou Kid attire.
The left side of his outfit was stained red and his eyes followed the smear of blood to the open window and he felt horrible. He had been downstairs dilly-dallying while Kaito was bleeding out alone.
"Kaito, wake up," he rolled the magician over and unbuttoned the jacket and shirt.
"Jii-chan!" He cried out before he remembered that the old man wasn't there. "Shit, of all the times."
He pulled off Kaito's jacket and then his shirt and inspected the bullet wound. There was an entry wound but no exit and a lot of blood. They were probably aiming to kill him and missed.
He was rather relieved. Whoever the people trying to kill him were, they were not as skilled as the Black Organization. He pushed on the wound with Kaito's shirt and the thief groaned. Chianti and Korn, they would not have missed.
"I'm sorry Kaito, I need to try and stop the bleeding." He moved to get up to get towels and water when his arm was grabbed. He looked down at the magician who had opened his eyes and stared him blankly.
A twinge of fear ran through him at those glowing irises and he tried to pull away but Kaito tightened his grip. He hissed in pain when Kaito's nails broke skin and he jerked his arm away which caused long scratches down his forearm.
Kaito sat up and licked his fingers and a low growl escaped from his throat. Shinichi stood up and tried to escape but the vampire was much faster than he was. He grunted as he was pushed against the wall and Kaito held his arms above his head.
"Kaito, please," he begged, his heart racing in his chest. The magician leaned forward and licked the blood that travelled down his arm and Shinichi shivered. A noise of surprise escaped his throat when Kaito's fangs pierced his arm and his legs trembled and he dropped his head.
It was the strangest, most enticing feeling to have his blood drawn by Kaito and he couldn't be mad because he watched as the bullet wound closed up as the magician fed. The embedded bullet also ejected itself as the wound closed up. He wasn't sure if the moan that left him when Kaito retracted his fangs was one of relief or disappointment.
Kaito released his arms and lifted his chin and Shinichi stared into his eyes. Kaito had already made his decision, he knew, and now he had to make his. He looked at this blood-covered creature, the blood from his wounds stained his clothes and the floor and his face but as Shinichi stared at him, he knew. He had to do this. Not by obligation, not by guilt, not by anything but his free will.
Shinichi closed his eyes and breathed in deeply. He didn't want to try to escape anymore. And as he felt Kaito's lips back on his own, he knew that opportunity had long passed.
