Chapter 10: Goodbye
Kudo Yukiko couldn't focus on removing the makeup on her face as she stared past her reflection in the mirror. Although a vampire, it didn't mean that she didn't keep up her normal skin care routine. She sighed and put down her sponge as she wiped the same area for the third time.
She wanted to go back to the professor's house and protect her son but she knew that this was something she couldn't stop. She jumped as the sink cracked under her fingers and she held her hands to her chest.
"Yukiko."
The woman looked up and couldn't help the smile that came to her face. She ran into her husband's arms and the dam broke. Yuusaku hated when his wife cried but he held her as she sobbed into his shirt.
"I'm sorry I couldn't be there when you needed me," he whispered gently and he just embraced her until her sobs quieted into small sniffles.
"Why does this have to happen to our Shin-chan?" She whimpered.
"Toichi warned us of this, albeit in a very roundabout way, that if Kaito and Shinichi should meet again in the future, a change out of our control would happen with our son." Yuusaku held Yukiko a bit tighter, "had I not become a vampire, I would have never understood what he meant."
"I hope they will be okay," Yukiko said as she stared out of the window.
"For their sakes, the best we can do is watch over them. For Toichi, it is the least we can do." Yuusaku replied as he followed her gaze.
The first thing Shinichi realized when he woke up was that he didn't feel so heavy-headed. His body felt light, open, free. He blinked a few times at the clarity of the ceiling above him and he lifted his hand above his head. He stared at it for a few moments trying to figure out what was wrong and then he shot up. He was back in his normal body! He patted himself down and pinched his hand just to be sure it wasn't a dream and swung his legs off the bed he laid in.
He was surprised that he was able to hear footsteps before the door was opened and he stood quickly.
"Kuroba! What are you-" His breath caught in his throat and he fell to his knees as he stared up at Kaito who closed the door behind him. Kaito approached him and the invisible weight that seemed the be forcing him down only became heavier and his face touched the floor.
Shinichi sucked in a breath as his body was forced into a bow and he could not seem to lift his head. After a long moment of silence, he exhaled heavily as the weight on his body was lifted. He sat up slowly and looked at Kaito who had his eyes closed in concentration. Intrigued violet irises finally peeked out from behind eyelids that hid them and Shinichi was once again enthralled by their ethereal illumination.
Kaito grinned at him, "sorry about that. I'm having trouble controlling the output of my powers. Ojou-chan was angry with me when it happened earlier to her. She called me a—"
Shinichi wasn't listening. He was more concerned about the burn crawling up his throat. He stared at Kaito longingly, the movement of the magician's throat and the pulsation of the veins beneath his skin, it was all so tempting to him.
"Shin-chan," Kaito recaptured the detective's attention and held out his arms, "come here."
At first, Shinichi hesitated, and two sides of him fought violently. One side of him wanted to move closer to Kaito and be wrapped up in the magician's arms but the other side was afraid of what would happen if he did.
He took a step forward and his body trembled. His tongue poked out to moisten his dry lips and he swallowed again. He took another hesitant step as he tried to realize every feeling going through his body. His body was hot and his throat burned and screamed for relief. He wished for the pain to end.
"Shin-chan," Kaito called again and Shinichi refocused on the reason for his disarray. He stared at Kaito who stood patiently and Shinichi shrunk a tiny bit. Kaito's eyes intimidated his very existence but drew him in like a moth to a flame and he took another step. He felt pressure in his lungs the closer he got to the magician but it was addicting as the magician's saccharine scent suffocated him and set every nerve ending on fire.
He jumped when he felt the magician's arms wrap around him and he hadn't realized he had gotten so close. Kaito held him impossibly close to his body and Shinichi whined at the overwhelming desire that filled his body. He raised his arms to wrap around Kaito's back and gripped his shirt tightly.
He squeezed his thighs together as their bodies created friction in places he couldn't quite handle, and his knees trembled under the pressure. Kaito's heartbeat under his skin was toying with his sanity and he flinched at the suddenly loud ripping sound he heard. He released Kaito's shirt that he had torn open in his quest to retain self control but it helped nothing and now he had nothing to hold onto.
His lips parted and he inhaled deeply, the only thought in his mind was satisfying his urge and his entire body shivered as his tongue poked out and touched Kaito's skin. Kaito leaned his head back and Shinichi ran his fingers through Kaito's messy hair, and followed the vein in his neck, feeling it pulsate under his tongue. He wanted it so bad. He could imagine his thirst being sated if only he would sink his fangs into the soft flesh of Kaito's neck but he stopped just before. A hesitation he didn't want to feel rose up inside of him and he breathed heavily. He needed it. He needed it, but his hands trembled and a thick feeling stuck to his throat. He wanted to drink so badly, he wanted it but a fear prevented his from doing it.
Kaito predicted this would happen and sighed quietly as he looked down at the detective. The magician lifted him into his arms and carried him back to the bed. Shinichi was laid down like a statue of spun glass and he stared up at the magician as he leaned over him.
Kaito could see that the detective was running on pure instinct but his illuminated cerulean eyes were wide and full of fear and confusion. He shook as he reached for Kaito but also pulled back when he reached too far.
Kaito rubbed his thumb across the detective's bottom lip and smiled, "you cannot seem to make up your mind. I will make it for you." Kaito sat up and removed his torn shirt and Shinichi gasped as the magician tore a gash into his neck with his claw. He allowed the blood to run down his chest and stomach and collect on the hem of his pants, and Shinichi sat up and couldn't help himself anymore. The detective pushed him down onto the bed and Kaito grinned as the detective lapped up the blood around the wound before he closed his mouth over the gash and suckled like Kaito remembered doing as a child before he learned how to bite. He rubbed Shinichi's back and he closed his eyes as Shinichi's fangs scraped across his skin.
"Shin-chan," Kaito breathed and Shinichi gripped the magician's arms tighter. Shinichi stopped licking at his neck and slowly sat up. For a while, he stared at nothing and Kaito watched him, but his eyes returned to normal finally and with the normalcy, the tears fell.
Shinichi looked down at him, his face twisted in anguish, and an endless amount of tears escaped from his eyes, "wh-what did you do to me?"
Kaito stared into Shinichi's glassy eyes for a long time and reached up to stroke the great detective's cheek, "I had no choice."
Shinichi closed his eyes and Kaito wiped away the tears that fell, "y-you made me into a—"
Kaito sat up and pulled Shinichi into an embrace, "yes, I turned you. You were dying because I mated with you while you were still human. If I had left you alone, you would have died a painful death. So, I made a selfish decision to keep you by my side, as a vampire."
Shinichi didn't try to pull away, or argue, or say anything. He leaned against Kaito weakly, and Kaito rubbed his back some more.
He remembered that he felt bad for a while, being incredibly exhausted, and having a dryness in his throat that water did not sate. It only seemed to get worse as he struggled to get out of bed as the days passed. He was at school when he passed out, he at least remembered that, and woke up at the agency. Haibara visited him and said something about Kaito but he begged her not to call the magician. He didn't remember much after that. Then, after being unconscious for however long, he woke up back in his normal body and sucking blood from the vampire magician like he actually enjoyed it.
He pressed his hands to his face, and a sob escaped his throat. His body shook as he held in his cries and all Kaito could do was hold him through his breakdown. After quite a bit of time, he dropped his hands from his face long after the tears had stopped and allowed Kaito to situate him on the bed. The magician kissed his forehead and wiped his eyes again, "rest more, it will take some time for you to adjust to your new body and instincts."
Kaito left the room and shut the door behind him. Haibara was in the living room, typing away at her computer and she gave him a fleeting glance as he went into the kitchen for a cloth to clean his chest and neck. "You look like you went through a lot. I'm assuming he didn't take it well?"
"Not at all," Kaito replied as he wiped the blood off his body, "not that I expected him to, it is a big change that he admitted he wasn't sure he could go through with. He struggled to take blood on his own so I ended up indulging him. I feel bad for suddenly throwing his entire existence for a loop but it was either this or a funeral."
"Two, actually. Without your mate, you would not have survived long after his death," Haibara said nonchalantly. She pointed to a spare shirt on the couch and he nodded gratefully.
"You surely are well versed in the topic of mates and what happens to vampires without them, Oujo-chan," Kaito mentioned as he slipped the shirt on and Haibara snorted.
"I have done a bit of research and read a lot on the mating process of vampires," she explained casually, "it is rather intriguing how fledglings become involuntarily enamored with their sires for a time after turning and are inflicted with bouts of high anxiety and panic attacks if they are separated from their sire for long amounts of time."
Kaito hummed in interest, "I didn't know that. Does that mean that Shin-chan would be the same way if I were to leave?"
"I'm not sure. Would you like to find out? I'm sure I could use the experiment as research material."
Kaito glanced at the time, it was already six in the morning and an entire day since he last slept. "Yeah, let's give it a try. A little bit, I would like to see Shin-chan cling to me. It would be a nice change from his previous obstinacy."
Haibara snorted, "I'm sure he would cling to you now. Just being out of his sight should be distressing for him."
As if on cue, the door to Shinichi's temporary room opened and he peeked his head out and stared at them with red-rimmed eyes, "I'm hungry."
"There's some chili on the stove, I figured you might be a little hungry," Haibara smiled and Shinichi stared at her suspiciously.
"I don't like how nice you're being, did you poison it?" He asked and Kaito couldn't help the snort that escaped his throat.
Haibara turned back to her screen, "since you asked, I might have."
The detective walked to the kitchen slowly and pointedly avoided Kaito as he grabbed a bowl and spooned some chili into it. He padded over to the table and sat down. He flinched as the magician sat across from him and slowly spooned chili into his mouth and chewed nervously as he felt the magician's eyes on him.
A pressure grew in his chest and he felt a sense of deja vu as he gripped his shirt. This was different than when his body was turning back, he knew that feeling of fear and anxiety from when he found himself or the detective boys in life-threatening situations, but he didn't understand why it was happening now. He looked up at Kaito who was typing on his phone and a voice in the back of his mind told him that he should be as close to his mate as possible. He shook his head and ate more chili.
Every fibre of his being screamed at him to go into the embrace of his mate and stay but he just squeezed his spoon as hard as he could and dropped it when it crumpled between his fingers. Kaito looked up at him as the spoon clattered on the table and Shinichi hid his trembling hands under the table.
"Shin-chan, are you alright?" Kaito asked gently and Shinichi just nodded, not trusting his own voice to betray him.
Kaito stared at him for a while longer before he sighed and stood, "alright, I have to go now."
Shinichi stood too before he could stop himself, "you're leaving?"
Kaito paused and almost lost his poker face, "yes, I have to get to school."
Shinichi tried to hide his disappointment but Kaito watched him deflate, "h-have a good day." The detective blushed as he stuttered like a schoolgirl in front of her crush and Kaito smiled lovingly.
He wrapped Shinichi in an embrace and the detective just about melted in his arms. Kaito pressed a kiss to Shinichi's cheek before he released him and the detective had to stop the whine that grew in his throat. He almost smacked himself at how weird he was acting and watched Kaito whisper something to Haibara that even his sensitive hearing couldn't pick up. She nodded and he kissed her hand and a pang of irritation hit Shinichi then but the detective actually pinched himself then. He wasn't a girl!
Kaito came back to him and brushed a finger across his cheek, which sent a spark of joy through Shinichi's body, "I would suggest staying out of the sun. Although it is tolerable to an extent, the sun is not our friend, unfortunately, and even less so for a recently turned fledgling such as yourself." Shinichi looked at Kaito meekly and the magician rubbed his thumb across the detective's lower lip, "be good today, Shin-chan, I'll see you later."
Shinichi pushed away the urge to run out the door after Kaito, reminding himself that he was still upset with the vampire for turning him. He clenched his fingers and the hairs on his neck stood as he smelled blood.
"Idiot," Haibara was by his side immediately and she opened his palm and inspected the blood that rose from his crescent shaped wounds. "Don't be so careless with your blood. You are the King's mate, there are many vampires that would attack you for a drop of it. I'm lucky to have more self-control or I would have ripped your throat open by now."
"Sorry, Haibara," Shinichi scratched the back of his head and thought he should be more disturbed by her comment. She made him heal his own wounds which really freaked him out and she sighed.
"Go sleep some more, Kudo-kun," she said as she went back to her computer, "it will be easier on your body to stay out of the sunlight and I need to keep you here to see if your body will hold to the temporary antidote and Kuroba's blood. I don't need you being anywhere important if you do end up changing back."
Shinichi nodded and went back into his room with a quiet goodbye.
Haibara sighed and resumed her work. There was so much to do.
Haibara opened the door before Kaito could even knock. He stepped into the house and looked around. It seemed normal.
"Had an eventful day?" He commented and Haibara snorted.
"Did you think it was going to be a war zone in here?" Haibara asked.
"Actually, I did," Kaito smiled, "unless your theory was wrong."
"Well," Haibara led him to the room the detective was in and eased the door open, "my theory wasn't wrong, he's just very courteous and kept his tantrum in this room."
Kaito peeked his head in the door and was mildly surprised at the destruction of the room. Papers were strewn everywhere, there was broken glass all over the floor, sheets and pillows torn up and carelessly thrown across the room.
"Surprisingly, he was angry before anything but that may just be all his pent-up emotions about everything that's happened up until now. He ripped up everything and threw it all around the room before he started the crying fit. I tried to ask him why he was upset but of course, he didn't give me a straight answer."
Kaito pushed the door open and he finally spotted Shinichi in the room, curled up in the corner facing the wall. He stepped over to the detective quietly, and smiled fondly at the sight.
"You left your shirt here this morning and your scent seemed to calm him down a lot," Haibara said as Kaito lifted Shinichi in his arms. The detective had cuddled the shirt he'd ripped apart earlier and fallen asleep.
"There another spare room upstairs," Haibara informed as she pointed toward the door, "just try to be quiet, the professor was up all night working on an invention and is still sleeping."
Kaito nodded as he carried Shinichi up the stairs and nudged the door open and it clicked quietly after he kicked it shut. He laid Shinichi on the bed and stroked the detective's hair. He tried to take his shirt away from Shinichi but it roused the detective and he blinked his blue eyes open.
He blinked at Kaito and his eyes became wide. He sat up quickly and Kaito smiled as he heard the detective's heart beat quicker. "You're back!"
"I am," Kaito nodded, "I see you made a mess downstairs."
Shinichi blushed and looked away, "I just got a little frustrated and took out my anger on the many inanimate objects in that room, that's all!"
"I see," Kaito smiled again, "are you sure that's the only reason why?"
Shinichi could only nod and he looked away. All the anxiety he was feeling earlier was gone and he cleared his throat. He took in Kaito's scent that surrounded him and he felt at ease again.
The burn that he had previously felt had returned and he swallowed a few times as they sat in a strange silence.
"Shin-chan," Shinichi looked at Kaito and shivered at the magician's illuminescent violet irises, "your heart beats so frantically under your skin." Shinichi was a little alarmed as Kaito pushed him back onto the bed and he grunted as his back hit the bed. Kaito straddled his waist and Shinichi fought to escape Kaito's hold but the magician pinned his legs and held his arms.
"Let go of-" Shinichi's protests were cut off by a gasp as Kaito licked a line up his neck and he closed his eyes tightly. His hips twitched which caused him to grind against the magician and created unwanted friction and his eyes shot open as his body reacted in ways he didn't want.
"Shinichi," Kaito breathed against his neck and Shinichi couldn't stop the breathy moan that escaped his throat. His entire body shivered in anticipation for the thing he knew was coming. The thing his body craved.
And then there was a knock.
Kaito leaned his head on Shinichi's shoulder and sighed heavily, "bothersome children."
"I heard that," Haibara said from the other side of the door, "if you two are done fogging the windows, Kudo-kun, your mother and father are here."
Kaito crawled off of the detective and Shinichi jumped off the bed grateful for the interruption. Shinichi pulled the door open and Haibara smiled condescendingly at him. "Feeling better, Kudo-kun?
"Shut it, Haibara."
Yukiko cuddled her son despite his many protests but he finally gave up and held still for her when she began the waterworks. They talked for a while, the four of them, and Shinichi held back his anxiety that didn't like that Kaito was so far away even though he was on the settee across from him and in touching distance.
He was incredibly surprised at how long his parents kept their blood sucking secret from him. His father even laughed nervously when Shinichi had asked him about all the times he pushed science over everything.
They came up with a plan to make Conan disappear for a while but not permanently in case his body turned back into that of a child. As for him as a high schooler, they suggested he transfer to Ekoda High to be closer to Kaito but Shinichi refused and explained that he had the rest of eternity with Kaito if he chose and he could stay at Teitan High for the year and a half until graduation.
Kaito didn't argue but he narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the detective knowing it had something to with the Mouri girl.
"I have friends here, I don't want to leave what I already know. I don't want to start over only for a year and a half."
Kaito couldn't argue with that but he wasn't going to give in so easily. He made the detective promise to stay with him at his home in Ekoda for the summer break. Although the detective protested, he was eventually persuaded into agreeing by both the magician and his parents because Kaito would be the best person to help him get used to being a vampire and also to feed him when needed.
"You'll stay here until Haibara is sure that your cells won't degenerate and after that, you'll come with me, to Ekoda."
Shinichi frowned at Kaito as he held out his hand, and looked away with a blush as he placed his hand into the magician's.
