Ralphie sat on the bed, staring at his discovery. After finding the earrings, he knew that something was up. How did they get in the box? Why were they glowing red? What did the skull and crossbones shape mean?
After thinking back to the many times he had seen the earrings glow before, Ralphie then came to a conclusion that seemed plausible. He didn't know if it was possible or if it was the right explanation, but he couldn't think of any other possibility. If it was what he thought, it would be huge. He needed to talk to someone about this. Maybe one of his friends knew what could possibly be going on. However, it was already the evening. Everyone would be asleep. Well, maybe not everyone.
Ralphie knew that Tim sometimes liked to stay up later than everyone. It was a habit he developed in high school when he started playing guitar. He like to spend some extra time practicing or playing some of his favorite songs. Sure, Tim didn't play guitar much since he finished high school, but maybe he still had a habit of staying up late? Ralphie didn't know, but Tim was his best bet at someone still being awake.
Ralphie got his phone and called Tim. After a few rings, Tim answered.
"Hello?" Time sounded pretty tired, almost as if he had just woken up, or was about to go to sleep himself.
"Tim, it's Ralphie."
"Oh, hey Ralphie. Could you call me in the morning? I'm about to hit the sack."
"No, I can't. This is important." Ralphie insisted.
"Fine. What's so important?"
"Well... I can't really explain it, but something weird is going on."
"Weird, how?"
"It's super weird, and I think it might have something to do with Ms. Frizzle."
"What? How?"
"I don't know. It's just a hunch. Look, it's late, and I can't really explain what is going on. You might need to see it for yourself. Can you come over to my parent's place in the morning. I'll show you what I am talking about."
"Alright, I'll be there."
"Great. Well, I'll see you in the morning."
"Alright. Goodnight." With that, Tim hung up.
With the conversation over, Ralphie took another look at the earrings. They were certainly strange and mysterious. He wondered if they meant what he thought they did. If they did, then he and his friends would probably be in for a huge adventure. He turned to Liz, who was in her terrarium, also staring at the earrings.
"Don't worry Liz. We'll figure out what's going on soon enough. I'm sure Tim will be a big help." Liz gave a small nod.
Ralphie then put the earrings back in the box where he found them and got ready for bed himself. As he fell asleep, he kept on thinking about this strange occurrence that had happened. He had the feeling that something big was going on. All he could do now was wait until the morning to see if Tim would understand.
The next morning, Ralphie woke up and prepared himself for his meeting with Tim. He went downstairs and had breakfast with his mom before she left for work. Afterwards, Ralphie stayed in his bedroom until there was a knock on the door.
Liz got out of her terrarium and hopped onto Ralphie's shoulder. Ralphie then took the earrings out of the box, still glowing from last night, put them in his pocket, and went downstairs. He answered the door, and Tim stood outside.
"Hey, Ralphie. Is that Liz?"
"Yes. She's staying with me for now."
"Cool. Hey, Liz." Liz gave a small wave. "So, what was so important last night?"
"Come in and I'll show you." Tim went into the house and sat down on the couch, ready to hear what Ralphie had to say.
"Alright, so yesterday, I went to the elementary school to help clear out Ms. Frizzle's things, right? Well, last night, after I had finished clearing everything, something strange happened."
"How strange?"
"Well, there was something weird with one of the boxes. It was glowing a creepy red color and rumbling."
"Really?" Tim was doubtful.
"Really. I know it sounds strange, but something was going on. Anyway, I opened the box, and I found something really creepy inside."
"What?"
"Well..." Ralphie then reached into his pocket, pulled out the earrings, and put them on the coffee table. When Tim saw the ominous glowing earrings, he was a bit creeped out and confused.
"What are those?"
"I don't really know for sure. They look like earrings to me."
Tim then picked up the earrings and stared at them. Their creepy skull and crossbones shape and red glow were certainly frightening. "What is up with these?"
"I don't really know, but... I think they might have something to do with Ms. Frizzle."
"How?"
"Well, remember those earrings that Ms. Frizzle always wore? The ones that glowed before every field trip? Those kind of remind me of them."
Tim studied the earrings and realized that they did kind of remind him of the earrings that Ms. Frizzle wore, even if they never glowed red. "I see what you mean."
"I know."
"Well, if they are connected to Ms. Frizzle, what do they mean?"
Ralphie sat down on the couch next to Tim. "I've got ideas. Last night, I kept thinking back to every time I saw her earrings glowing, and I remembered that they always glowed before we left on a field trip. This may be the same thing."
Tim looked over at Ralphie with a bit of shock. "You think she want us to go on a field trip?"
"It's possible. I mean, I couldn't think of any other way to explain what is going on."
"So, you think she is trying to communicate with us after death? How is that possible?"
"Well, communication with the dead has been possible. I mean, there are Ouija boards are seances."
"Ralphie, that is not even real. You can't really believe in the paranormal, can you?"
"I don't know for sure, but I can't think of another way to explain what is going on. Can you?"
Tim thought hard, but realized that Ralphie had a point. If magic existed, then maybe the paranormal also did. "No, I can't. Okay, so if Ms. Frizzle is trying to talk to us, how did these get in the box."
"I don't know. I can't think of any way that they could have ended up in there."
"Okay. Well, we can try to figure that out later. Right now, let's focus on what we can figure out. So, you think she is trying to tell us to go on a field trip. But where?"
"I hadn't really thought of that. All I thought of was if the earrings meant we were going on a field trip. However, I also remember that her earrings changed every time we went on a new field trip, and they were always shaped as something that had to do with whatever the field trip was about."
"So, maybe the skull and crossbones shape could tell us where we are going."
"Exactly. We just have to figure out what is related to skull and crossbones."
Ralphie and Tim thought hard about what the skull and crossbones could have represented. At one point, Ralphie brough up the idea that the field trip had to do with pirates, but Tim pointed out that there was no reason Ms. Frizzle would want then to go on a pirate field trip when she was dead. After a bit of more thinking, Tim came to the conclusion that the skull and crossbones represented Ms. Frizzle's death, so maybe the field trip was death-related. Tim then thought about why a field trip would be death-related, but he came to a conclusion that had him hoping that it was not the right one.
"I think... Ms. Frizzle wants us to go to hell."
Ralphie looked over at Tim in shock. "What?!"
"I know it doesn't seem right, but think about it. Ms. Frizzle is dead, and skull and crossbones could mean death. And this scary red glow could mean hell since hell is scary and full of fire and brimstone."
"I guess that makes sense, but why would Ms. Frizzle want us to go to hell?"
"Well... I think she is there."
"What?! Ms. Frizzle in hell?! That's not right."
"I know. I think she is there and wants us to rescue her."
"You think?"
"Yes. It could be why she is trying to communicate with us. She wants us to help her."
"Man, if that is the case, we have to do something."
"We have to?"
"Yeah. Ms. Frizzle has always been nice to us and gave us the best moments of our lives. It doesn't make sense why she would be sent there. If she is indeed in hell, we owe it to her to help her."
"I guess, but how are we supposed to help."
"I don't know. We need someone smart who can help us figure out how."
"How about DA."
"You think she will know about this."
"Maybe, maybe not, but she is smart. She can help us figure some stuff out."
"I guess. We should probably go talk to her later."
"Definitely."
A few hours later, Ralphie, Tim, and Liz were at DA's parent's house. They hoped they wouldn't sound crazy to her, but to be fair, who wouldn't think they were crazy with all of the ideas they had right now? Tim knocked on the door, and after a few seconds, DA answered.
"Oh, hey guys. What's up? Is that Liz?"
"Hey DA. Yeah, it's Liz. There's something that we need to talk to you about. It's really important." Ralphie responded.
"Oh, okay. Come in." Ralphie and Tim walked into the house and began explaining to DA what they were discussing hours earlier. They even showed her the earrings they found. After explaining everything, DA stared at them in confusion and shock.
"So, you two think that Ms. Frizzle is in hell and needs help?"
"Yes. We know this sounds crazy, but it's the most plausible thing we could come up with. The thing is, we don't know how to help her. We were thinking that you might know a thing or two about hell and can help us figure out how to get there." Tim explained.
DA sighed. Everything sounded crazy to her, but based on what the guys knew, everything made sense. "I don't really know much about hell, but I could probably do some research to find some answers for you." With that, all three of them went up to DA's old room, which had been converted to a guest bedroom, just like Ralphie. DA sat down at her computer and began searching for answers while Ralphie and Tim looked on in anticipation.
After a while, DA began discussing a few things that she had found. "So, if Ms. Frizzle needs us to rescue her from hell, we need to find a way to get there. It will be very difficult since we are still alive."
"Yeah, that is what we need to figure out. Can we get there or not?" Ralphie asked.
Well, I have found stories of people travelling to hell, or the underworld to most people, while still alive. There has to be a way we can do it."
After a few moments of searching online DA came up with an answer. "According to my research, the only way of getting to the underworld is-"
"-Magic!" Tim finished.
"Precisely."
"So, if we want to get to Ms. Frizzle, we need magic like... the Magic School Bus!" Ralphie exclaimed.
"Yes, the Magic School Bus could take us to hell and get Ms. Frizzle." Tim said.
"What I'm wondering is why someone like Ms. Frizzle would be sent to hell." DA added.
"Yeah, that confuses me, too. What also stumps me is how these earrings appeared in the first place." Ralphie said.
"Me, too. I don't know of any cases of things just appearing out of nowhere, especially if they pertain to the deceased." DA responded.
"We can figure that all out later." Tim cut in. "Right now, we should focus on finding the bus. If Ms. Frizzle really needs help, we need to get the bus."
"Right, but where would we find the bus?" Ralphie asked. "I'm pretty sure it would normally be at The Frizz's house, but if she's dead, it wouldn't be there anymore."
Liz agreed with Ralphie. The bus wouldn't be there anymore, just like she wasn't.
"Well, it is summer. Maybe the school put the bus wherever buses are stored when not in use., and it will be given to Ms. Frizzle's replacement." Tim offered.
"I guess that makes sense." Ralphie said. "But where are school buses kept."
"On it." DA began searching for the answers. "School buses are kept in this storage area close to the outskirts of town."
"Great. We can begin our search there."
"I don't know, Ralphie. I don't think they would let two random guys who don't work for a school just go in to look for a bus." Tim said.
"Well, we could go in after dark when no one is there." Ralphie suggested.
"No way. We could get in trouble for breaking and entering." Tim pointed out.
"Don't worry. We will find a way to make sure we don't get caught."
"It's too risky, man."
"Tim, we have to do this. Ms. Frizzle might be in big trouble. This may be the only way to help her." Ralphie insisted. Liz agreed with Ralphie.
Tim thought about it for a few moments and realized that Ralphie had a point. He really did care about Ms. Frizzle, and if she needed help, they had to help her by finding the bus. "Fine."
"Awesome. We'll head to the place after dark. You coming, DA?"
"No way. I'm not risking jail time with this plan."
"Suit yourself. We'll see you later. Come on, Tim." With that, Ralphie, Tim, and Liz said their goodbyes and left to prepare for their late-night heist. A lot was resting on this plan, but they were willing to risk it if it meant they could save Ms. Frizzle.
Later on, late at night, Ralphie, Tim, and Liz were in Ralphie's car outside of the storage area where the Magic School Bus was possibly kept. They waited a few minutes to make sure they were alone, and them got ready to enter the storage area.
"Alright, it looks safe enough. You ready?" Ralphie asked.
"I guess. Are you sure about this? We might get in serious trouble."
"Don't worry. We'll be fine. Just watch out for any cameras and keep the volume down. Got it?"
"That's your advice?"
"It'll be fine. Now, let's go."
With that, Ralphie, Tim, and Liz exited the car and approached the storage area. They had to scale a fence to get in. It was a bit easier for Ralphie since he was an athlete, but Tim had some difficulty since it had been a while since he played basketball. After they both got in without making too much noise, they walked around the area, making sure to keep quiet and avoid any cameras that could've been around. They checked every bus to see if it was the Magic School Bus, but none appeared to be. After an hour of walking around the lot a few times, it seemed like the bus wasn't there.
"It's been an hour. The bus isn't here." Tim said.
"No, it is here. It has to be." Ralphie insisted.
"Come on, Ralphie. If the bus were here, we would have found it by now."
"Just keep looking. I'm sure we'll find it."
After another ten minutes, it was pretty much hopeless that the bus would be found.
"This is hopeless, Ralphie. Let's just go.
"We have to find the bus!"
"Keep your voice down." Tim shushed. "The bus isn't here. Let's go."
"But we need to find the bus. We have to help Ms. Frizzle."
"If we couldn't find the bus, then it's not here. I'm sorry. We'll try some other place tomorrow, okay."
"Okay." Ralphie sighed.
With that, Tim, Ralphie, and Liz all left the lot. They were all sad that they didn't find the bus. Maybe it wasn't there after all. They decided to just go home and discuss what to do in the morning.
If only they had waited a little longer, they might have heard the creaking of metal coming from the middle of the lot while they were exiting...
Author's note: Again, sorry for being really late. I have excuses, but with the school year almost up, I can have more frequent updates.
I hope you are all enjoying this story so far. Stay tuned for more!
