A/N Thanks for your reviews and support.
Yumi Edogawa: thanks for your review, my friend. For this fic, he does not choose Izuku. We will definitely be seeing more of our friendly Phantom Thief. But maybe he won't be the only Phantom Thief. We shall see.
Tsukauchi's POV
Two days after bringing the kids into the hospital Naomasa was being forced to leave by his subordinate. Sansa who was a close friend forced him to go home for the night. While his reasoning was sound it still irked the detective to being forced to leave. The doctors were keeping him at least another day to ensure the infection had cleared up much to the boy's annoyance.
As he left the hospital though Bakugo had stopped him. To his surprise, the boy said, "Izuku likes drawing. We didnt have materials for it most of the time but if you want a place to start get him a sketchpad and pencils."
With that, the boy was gone leaving him stunned in the hallway. Never had he suspected the Bakugo would try to help him earn the trust of his friend. He thought Izuku and Bakugo would fight them tooth and nail. Instead, they had taken things rather well. It was almost as if they were tired of running.
Naomasa started with the realization. That was exactly it. Both of the leaders were tired of running all the time. While they couldn't just give up as they wouldn't have any leverage and it would lose the children's trust. They had slowly begun to realize it was losing battle. Only stubborn pride kept them from taking the first step. If not for pneumonia coming so early though their stubbornness would have taken them to their graves.
When Bakugo had agreed to be fostered by Best Jeanist the number 4 hero came and got him immediately. Though he was allowed to visit he did spend a lot of time with the hero.
Naomasa for his part had spent most of his time in the hospital with Izuku. The kid asked a lot about his quirk but kept nearly silent on anything about himself. It was obvious that the boy didnt trust him. He didn't know how to earn any trust without removing the kid from the hospital. Maybe the next day.
After he had slept, changed clothes, and had a real cup of coffee he made his way back to the hospital. The only extra stop made was at a local art supply store to pick up a sketchbook and some pencils. He was not going to waste the opportunity KEM had given him.
Upon entering the hospital a nurse briefed him on the updated status for Midoriya. The doctors had declared the infection cured and he was cleared to be discharged. From there he made his way to the room where the boy was staying. Naomasa wasnt surprised to find the kid changed back into his hoodie and staring down Sansa.
Naomasa cleared his throat drawing the two's attention. He asked carefully, "Is there a problem here?"
Sansa breathed out heavily from his nose before he said, "No sir," lie but for the moment he let it slide, "I was just reminding Midoriya that he cannot leave without you signing for his discharge."
The second part was true at least. It was probably a good thing he decided to come so early. There was no telling what the two would get into unsupervised. Sansa was usually level-headed but when pushed could have a temper.
Turning to the boy he noticed how ratty the sweatshirt was. It definitely was not warm enough for this time of year. The pants weren't in much better shape either. They would need to go clothes shopping before he took Midoriya back to his apartment.
Midoriya asked his green eyes narrowing at Naomasa, "Am I finally allowed to leave this hospital? I'm tired of being here."
"Yes you are being discharged into my supervision," he replied, "Do you have any objections to going clothes shopping? That sweatshirt doesn't look very warm."
Midoriya flinched before he muttered, "We didnt have much and the younger kids were a higher priority. You don't have to spend money on me."
Naomasa wanted to sigh at that. This kid had been on the streets for a long time. Trust would have to be earned and that would take time. Slowly he held out the bag with the sketchbook and pencils.
A flash of wariness went through the green eyes even as he took the bag. When the kid saw what was inside a spark of true happiness flared in his eyes. He did a quirk look at what he was given before looking back at Naomasa there was a question in his eyes.
"They are yours and if you want more just let me know," he said gently, "I'm your guardian for now and I want you to be happy. After the life you've lived so far I think you deserve it."
Midoriya whispered as he hugged the bag close to his chest, "Thank you."
His heart broke for the kid. When chasing King he never considered that he was just a scared kid. Those chasing him all though that he was in his late teens not in his early teens. Only Metz and Guggenheim were in their late teens.
Discharging the kid only took a few moments. The doctors reminded him to feed Midoriya small frequent meals. It would help him regain lost weight without making him sick.
When they made their way out into the streets Midoriya stuck close to him. His assumption on how thin the material was in that hoodie was correct. The kid shivered several times on the way to his car. After finding his car and a little coaxing they were headed to the clothing store.
After finding a place to park he led the kid inside. Midoriya moved towards the hoodies and jackets. They would be the more practical wear given the time of year. Naomasa moved towards the T-shirts and pants keeping an eye on the kid. Not because he thought the kid would run but to see what he liked. There was little doubt in his mind that Midoriya would try to get away with putting as little strain on his finances as possible. If he was a first-year officer it might be harder to take care of himself and another. However, he joined the force at eighteen and he was 36 now. He made plenty of money to support himself and a kid.
Eyeing the boy's size he guessed about what sized shirts he would need. From what he had seen Midoriya favored the darker colors so he would stick to green, grey, and black. Pants would be a little trickier the kid would have to try them on.
When he looked for the kid he was startled to find him gone. What the hell?! He had only turned away for a second. Before he could take a step to start a search of the building a hand grabbed his trenchcoat. To his relief, it was Midoriya who had somehow snuck up behind him.
Naomasa asked gently, "Did you find enough hoodies and a jacket?"
He almost frowned when he saw Midoriya only held two hoodies and a cheap-looking jacket. Sighing he bent to a knee so that he was eye to eye with the kid.
Gently he said, "Midoriya I know you're not used to having adults care about you. But I genuinely want you to have nice comfortable clothes. Price does not matter to me as I make more than enough to buy you what you need and indulge in hobbies. My job can more than keep us comfortable. So please pick more hoodies and a nice jacket."
Green eyes searched his onyx eyes for something. He would never get used to the way the boy seemed to search his soul. It was disconcerting, to say the least. Maybe one day there would be a time where Midoriya accepted his words without needing to search his soul.
Without saying a word the boy returned to the racks. A sigh of relief escaped him. Good at least he wouldn't have to fight the boy on this. Turning back to the racks he picked out a few pairs of jeans and sweatpants for the kid to try on. As he moved to take them to the kid he noticed the very faint look of longing sent towards a small rack of hero merchandise.
Huh, so the kid did like heroes then? It really shouldn't have surprised him. Even when Midoriya was running from them he would go out of his way to avoid fighting them. Only when he and the other Lost Children were cornered would they fight. At the time they thought it was odd but if he liked heroes enough to wear merch then it made sense.
Carefully he questioned, "Whose your favorite hero, Midoriya?"
Green eyes shot up to meet his once again sharply. Then they glanced back at the rack a look of contemplation crossing his face.
Naomasa almost missed the quiet whisper of, "Eraserhead and Ingenium."
That was surprising. Most people didnt even know Aizawa existed fewer still could recognize him. There were even police officers that couldn't recognize him and thought he was a hobo. To be fair it was part of his costume to look that way. It allowed him to go to places where more recognizable heroes couldn't. The problem was that he had so little merch it was near impossible to find any.
Ingenium being a Limelight hero meant it was easier to find merch on him. It was surprising that Midoriya had an attachment to the two though. Aizawa had helped from the beginning in trying to catch the children. While Tensei had been a last-minute addition.
Looking at the rack of hero merchandise he found an Ingenium hoodie. It was a fairly simple design but was soft to the touch and made of good quality. Adding it to the pile of clothes for the kid to try on he could see the shock in Midoriya's eyes. The kid honestly didn't think he was going to be allowed to have a hero hoodie.
Naomasa gave the kid a soft smile as he ordered, "Alright kid try these on. See what fits and what doesn't."
It took about ten minutes for him to try on everything. They had to go back twice to find pants that would fit but the shirts were right the first time. After that, they paid for everything ignoring the look the cashier was giving Midoriya. No doubt the cashier thought he was stealing due to his scruffy appearance.
Naomasa made note that within the next week or so they would need to get the kid a haircut. No doubt the last time he had a haircut it was done by one of the other kids. Best Jeanist would probably be the best for them to go to. It would give Midoriya and Bakugo a chance to talk and make sure that the other was fine.
A screech drew both Midoriya's and Naomasa's attention up to the sky as they exited the store. A familiar silver winged falcon dove towards them. For the first time since Midoriya woke up, Naomasa saw a smile on the kid's face. He raised his arm up for the bird to land on it.
The bird landed on the boy's arm and began to squawk angrily at thus child. It was as if he was scolding the child for not being around. By the smile on Midoriya's face, this was a regular occurrence for him.
As if remembering that Naomasa was there the boy started. Fear clouded his eyes as he drew his arm and subsequently the bird close to his chest protectively. What kind of monster did this kid take him for? He would never hurt an animal unless it was attacking him.
Turning to lead Midoriya to his car he said, "As long as he doesn't attack me or my dog I don't mind you having a falcon. He can be your partner when you're in hero school. It will take some work but I'm sure you're both up to it."
He didnt see the kid's reaction to his words as he was turned away. There was however a bit of hesitation before he heard footsteps following him. The trip to his apartment was made in complete silence. It unnerved Naomasa at how quiet the kid was. As the King of Thieves, he had been cocky and enjoyed bantering with the heroes. As a child, though he didnt speak unless he was spoken to. That was not how he wanted things to be between them. He just didnt know how to bring the kid out of his shell.
Naomasa's apartment was on the north side of town. It was a three-bedroom apartment with one and a half baths. That would allow Midoriya to have his own room and still have room for a visitor. Right he would have to call Yagi to keep the hero from visiting for a time. The last thing he wanted was to overwhelm the kid with the Number One hero.
