Yumi Edogawa: thanks for your review my friend. Not all of the Lost Children decided to stick around. And someone had to teach them at some point how to fight. Who the mysterious person is? We will just have to wait and see.
Iida's POV
He hadn't meant to leave the kids mostly alone for the day. It had been one thing after another since Tsukauchi left. Villain here, regular criminal there. Everybody seemed to want a piece of him time. It wasn't until after 3 in the afternoon that he realized he hadn't seen any of the kids.
Not since they were dropped off. Not when he was traveling the hallways. Especially not in the breakdown where the food was.
When he went to check the training room he found it completely empty. That was when the panic set in. Tsukauchi was going to kill him if he allowed the kids to escape back out into the streets. Especially since it was the first day they were all allowed in one spot.
Then he froze. If Tsukauchi didn't kill him Shouta most certainly would. Especially if the rumors were true and the boy, Izuku he thought his name was, was Shouta's soulmate. It was just rumors currently but with the way Shouta had been avoiding his texts they just might be true.
God help him at this point if it was for he could not find them. He sent out his sidekicks to search the streets. Maybe they would have better luck.
By five though he had to admit defeat and that the kids were gone. His sidekicks had done their best but without any clues they couldn't do anything. They had even checked the warehouses about the capture site. Nothing. It didn't even look like the Lost Children had been back since their surrender. It was like they were trying to catch smoke.
Was this how Shouta felt for the year they chased the Lost Children? Tensei didn't like the feeling of helplessness that was threatening to overcome him. Where could they have gone?
"Sir?"
Turning he found Lyko standing in the doorway of the training room. Beside him was Tsukauchi and Best Jeanist. Both men looked exhausted but in good spirits. Too bad he was about to ruin that.
Tsukauchi asked as they entered the room, "Where are the kids?"
Rubbing the back of his neck he replied, "I don't know. We got caught up in calls to assist in capturing villains we didn't know they were missing until two hours ago. I've already had the building searched from top to bottom and my sidekicks are searching the city."
"You lost them? How could an entire agency lose a group of teenagers? You were supposed to be keeping an eye on them!"
Jeanist didn't say anything he seemed to be focused on his quirk. So for the moment Tensei ignored him. Instead he tried to explain to Tsukauchi. Not that the detective was listening to him.
He was truly tearing into Tensei for losing them. With each harsh word Tensei's head dropped an inch lower. The hero felt bad for losing them as he was supposed to be the group's guardian until they found families. He failed them and he knew it.
Then he looked up seemingly used by whatever decided to make itself home in his rafters. It better not be another bat. He was getting tired of having to chase bats out of his agency. He wasn't even sure how they were getting in!
As Tsukauchi was beginning another tirade Jeanist interrupted, "Not that Ingenium doesn't deserve a lecture but he hasn't actually lost them."
At their confused looks he simply pointed to the ceiling. Both Tensei and Tsukauchi craned their necks up to see what he was pointing at. Tensei's jaw nearly hit the floor at the sight.
All of the missing children were in the rafters. Some were talking quietly amongst themselves. While others playing an odd game of tag that nearly gave him a heart attack just watching.
Bakugo Katsuki was laying out over one beam. From his position Tensei couldn't see if the boy's eyes were open or not. No doubt however he was very much aware of everything that was going on. In the short time Tensei had known him, Bakugo seemed extremely serious. So he doubted that the boy wasn't at least aware of them.
Finally was Izuku Midoriya. The greenette had a sketch pad leaning on his knees. His eyes were solely focused on the pad and not what was happening below him.
Tensei breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of the children. He worried about how to get them down but at least he knew they were still in the building. His relief only lasted a few moments however. As they were about to call to the children one slipped from the beam. The one playing with him tried to grab their arm. Only to miss by mere inches. Shouts of alarm were immediately given.
Izuku's POV
Shouts of alarm roused him from his drawing. It was just in time to Kavar fall from the rafters and Hayate missing grabbing him by mere inches. This had the older kids scrambling to their feet despite it being useless. By the time they could even think about planning a rescue he would have hit the ground.
Silver threads reached out and caught the young before several feet above the ground. That was! Looking down they saw Best Jeanist standing in the doorway. Light green eyes were intently staring at the previously falling child, while deft fingers manipulated his quirk.
Izuku breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed he owed the hero for saving Kavar. The boy had a difficult life with his empathy quirk. He didn't need to be paralyzed from a bad fall. Or worse dead.
All the children froze their eyes going from Izuku to the adults below. Questions hung in their eyes wanting to know what to do next but afraid to ask. So they waited to see if Izuku or Katsuki would make the first move.
Izuku was many things but he was not ungrateful. Before he did much more than move to the edge he grabbed his sketchbook. Then he tapped his middle finger against his outer thigh he jumped down precisely. The others followed his silent direction without question. Older kids helped the younger ones down. Everyone understood the game was up but not to let their guard down yet. After all they had known the heroes were looking for them and had done nothing to help them.
Carefully Izuku landed on the floor aware of the eyes upon him. Eyes he resolutely refused to meet. He heard Tsukauchi sigh lightly.
Then the man said with a note of disapproval, "You gave us quite a scare. As well as a lot more work for Ingenium. Why did you kids hide in the rafters? You could have been injured or worse."
Izuku said with a wry smile, "We are used to using such things as our playground. It was a simple game of floor is lava," the look he received was unamused, "One that got out of hand."
Ingenium replied with a frown, "You could have been hurt. What if Best Jeanist hadn't caught him? What then?"
There was no answer for that. If they had been on their own there wouldn't have been a way to save him. They shifted on their feet minutely under the stares.
"Let us know next time," Ingenium conceded, "That way I can have someone watching just in case this happens again. For my piece of mind at least."
That they could agree to. Katsuki and Izuku grasped each other's arms in silent goodbye before following their guardians out. Izuku and Tsukauchi didn't get very far before the detective turned to face him.
Fear darted across his face as it took every ounce of self control he had not to flinch. Was this it? Would the detective punish him away from everyone else? Would he be struck for the fun they had at the hero's expense?
Tsukauchi said reaching into his jacket, "I've been meaning to have this returned to you."
Removing his hand he held a gold round object to Izuku. It was the falcon pin that he carried since he was just a small child. The last remaining object of his past and according to Katsuki it could be the key to unlocking his past.
Izuku remembered Kid's reaction to the pin. And the offer that quickly followed. He had the business card hidden in his room at Tsukauchi's apartment. Another thing to look into later.
For now he whispered sincerely, "Thank you, Detective. I would have hated to lose this pin. It might not look like much to someone like you but it means everything to me."
"Why?" There was curiosity and the under tones of something else he couldn't identify in the question.
Izuku replied softly his green eyes distant, "It belonged to my father at least according to my mother. She said he left it for me before he left. Off on another one of his wild adventures. I never knew him."
"I can look into it," offered Tsukauchi, "If you want me to that is."
Izuku was conflicted. Did he want Tsukauchi to look into his past? No, not particularly. Still this would be a good chance to find out who he was but he wouldn't rush it. Not this time.
He said carefully, "Not yet. I'm not sure I'm ready to handle the mess that will bring. But one day when I'm ready?"
"Then we can wait until you're ready," conceded the detective easily.
"Thank you."
