...
It would be several hours before the two boys came out of the room. Both were blearily rubbing at their eyes. Naomasa had made pancakes, eggs, and bacon. The two greeted him with sleepy mumbles before sitting at the table.
Naomasa hid a smile as he watched them. It was good to see them acting like children instead of leaders. How long had it been since they were able to act like this? Years? Probably.
Neither Izuku nor Katsuki (according to Tsunagu) liked to talk about their pasts. To talk about how they met the other children. Or who the ones that had left before they met.
Too many things were unknown to them. In the eyes of the children were the pain that they refused to give words to. Naomasa tried to speak to Izuku about it but he was shot down. The same was given to each hero that tried with the other kids. An unspoken pact was between them. A part of him screamed that they were protecting someone. Who that was, was anyone's guess.
Once the boys had their fill of food Naomasa made his own plate. The boys were more awake now and were watching him. Green and red eyes watched every movement he made. There was the slightest hint of apprehension in them.
"Next time one of you want to visit please let us know," he said breaking the silence, "Katsuki you gave Tsunagu a heart attack when he couldn't find you this morning."
"Sorry," muttered the boy not looking at all sorry.
Naomasa just nodded. As he was finishing his first pancake his phone rang. Katsuki's eyes widened with fear. Only Izuku's hand stopped him from jumping to his feet. A cautious glance was given to him waiting to see what would be said.
He glanced at the caller ID. It wasn't Tsunagu but Sansa. A deep frown crossed his face as he answered it, "Sansa what is it?"
He was supposed to be off today. What could the other possibly want right now? It had better be an emergency.
"Are the kids safe? They are with you right?" For the second time that morning his heart stopped.
Naomasa's eyes locked onto the children and they gave a full body flinch. He had to be sure that they were safe and with him. Then he listened a sense of dread filling him.
Sansa said and Naomasa could hear him clicking on the other end of the line, "Inko Midoriya is packing up her stuff. Something has spooked her."
Naomasa questioned loudly, "What?! How? The kids are here with me."
Sansa growled, "I'm not sure how. The officers we had watching her said a moving truck appeared first thing. They have been pulling things out of her apartment. Tsuragamae has given the okay to bring her in. I'm on my way now."
Then a thought hit him, "What about the Bakugos? Has anyone checked on them?"
Sansa swore violently, "Fuck I forgot about them. I'll have a group sent over to check on them. Do you want them brought in as well?"
Naomasa glanced at the kids before he said, "Yes bring them in as well. I'll be there as soon as I can. I need to get them to Ingenium or Best Jeanist."
"Alright. I'll send you a message when I have her and we are on our way back to the station."
With that he allowed the line to go dead. Izuku asked before he could even consider saying anything, "What's happening? Why do you need to go? You said you would be off work today."
There was the barest hints of disappointment in the greenette's voice. A small part of him wanted to take back everything that had just happened but he couldn't. He took a breath to center himself then released it.
Finally he said, "Inko Midoriya is preparing to run. Sansa my partner is going to bring her in now. He will also be checking on the Bakugos. I'm going to drop you off either at Ingenium or Best Jeanist's."
The two boys exchanged a glance before Katsuki asked, "Can we go with you?"
Naomasa shook his head as he said, "Not this time. Let me go talk to them and use my quirk. Remember I'm a human lie detector. I promise you that they will not get away with what they have done."
The boys seemed to judge his very soul for a moment. Then they nodded. They left the room most likely to change into clean clothes. Naomasa used that to message Best Jeanist. It was unsurprising that the hero wanted to be their for the interrogations. This forced him to call Ingenium who agreed to send a car for the kids.
After seeing them off he rushed off to the station. As expected of his partner Sansa had Inko and husband in interrogation rooms. In another set of rooms were the Bakugos. Tsuragamae stood outside in the bullpen waiting on his arrival.
Tsuragamae was a a very tall, sturdily built man with the head of a beagle. The area around his eyes and his ears is a dark brown, the two sides separated by a tan line which runs down his forehead, widening at his muzzle, which is flecked with pale brown. He wore a suit, consisting of a dress shirt, and waistcoat, over which he wears an unbuttoned black blazer and matching dress pants underneath. He has a belt with a large buckle and a black and white tie that resembles a dalmatian's coat.
Tsuragamae said as he approached, "Good you've made it. We have Inko and her new husband an American by the name of Banks in interrogation room 1 and 2. The Bakugos are in rooms 3 and 4. Tsukauchi, I want you to handle the interrogation but only if you can keep your emotions in check. Can you be impartial with having your ward?"
Naomasa drew himself up to his full height as he said, "I can and must. I will do my duty as an officer of the law."
The dog man's eyes searched his then he ordered, "Then start with Inko Banks. Her current husband might not be an accomplice in this."
Naomasa didn't say anything as he took the files and moved towards the first interrogation room. Outside with his hand on the door he took a breath to settle himself. He had to be a detective here not a foster parent. As much as he wanted to strangle Inko he couldn't. So he opened the door and moved towards the table.
Inko Banks formerly Inko Midoriya looked up as he entered. He kept his face carefully neutral not giving a hint of what he was thinking to cross his face. Instead he read her body language assessing what she thought. She was defensive meaning she had at least an idea of what she was there. There wasn't any recognition however which meant she didn't know him. Good. That might make things a little easier.
As he sat down he greeted, "Mrs. Banks, I am Detective Tsukauchi Naomasa of the Musutafu Police Department. Before you say anything I must inform you that my quirk is Lie Detector. It tells me when someone lies or gives a half truth. Now do you agree to speak with me?"
Inko said in a sickly sweet voice, "Of detective. I have no idea what this could be about."
Truth. Lie.
Well that answered that. She knew exactly what was going on here. Most likely she was testing to see if what he was true. Or if he was just bullshitting her.
Using a code they had made when he first became a detective Naomasa clicked his pen once once then clicked it twice in quick succession. Indicating to those watching that it was truth then lie.
Naomasa pushed forward, "All right then I'll tell you. Inko Banks formerly Midoriya you are here because of accusations of child abandonment, abuse, and neglect."
For a moment the woman stared at him in shock. Then she said, "This is ridiculous. I have never laid a hand on a child."
Truth.
Naomasa raised an eyebrow as he pulled out a photo from the file and pushed it for her to see. It was Izuku, a photo taken after he had been released from the hospital. He watched her for a reaction and wasn't disappointed. There was a flash of hatred in her eyes. Even years later it seemed she recognized the child she had abandoned.
She said as she composed herself, "I have no idea who that is."
Lie.
A sharp smile crossed Naomasa's face as he said, "You seem to have forgotten that my quirk can tell when you're lying. You just lied. You know who this is. Izuku Midoriya, a thirteen year old child who went missing when he was six. Due to your statement after he went missing it was never fully investigated because you declared him quirkless."
The woman sneered, "Fine. I do know the brat and he was quirkless. I'm surprised that he is still alive."
Truth.
"Oh," he hummed.
Her eyes glinted thinking that he would be like the others, "Yes he was such a burden. My friends all left me except for Mitsuki and her brat was practically a villain at that age. Because of their actions we decided that they shouldn't be in society. We were trying to save society from the little monsters."
Truth.
Naomasa questioned, "Why abandon them? They were just innocent children who didn't know any better."
"Innocent?" Came the incredulous question, "No. The brats were hellbent on destroying our lives. First by Izuku being quirkless thus making me the laughing stock of the hospital. Not to mention I was an unmarried single mother in their eyes. His father was never around. They thought I was a whore. I wish I had never met that man."
Truth.
Man? Could it be?
Naomasa questioned despite it not being part of their usual questioning material, "What do you know of his father? Why did you let Izuku have the falcon pin?"
Her eyes went cold as she replied, "Very little. That pin was all I was given from him all those years ago. Why did I give it to the brat? Because I wanted nothing to remember the bastard by."
Truth.
Naomasa tried to question, "What scared you into packing up?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," she tried again.
Lie.
He blinked then said, "That's another lie. Did someone tip you off?"
She refused to speak. Her eyes were looking over his shoulder. Damn it.
Naomasa looked at the two way mirror briefly. Then he stood and moved around the table. Pulling the woman to her feet forcefully.
"What are you doing? You're going to arrest me because of a quirkless?!"
A growl escaped him, "You are under arrest for child abandonment, abuse, and neglect. You have the right to remain silent anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have a right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you."
It felt good to lead her out in handcuffs and hand her off to another officer. They would take her in and book her. For his part he still needed to question three others.
From there he went to speak to Banks. The man had light brown hair and hazel eyes. He wore a green long sleeved shirt with black jeans and a leather jacket over it. His hands were handcuffed to the table as expected.
A few moments of talking with him, Naomasa got the feeling that he didn't know anything. Every answer he had given rang true and not even half truths. It was good and they would be able to let him go later.
The next was the Bakugos. They made Naomasa want to commit murder. Their story had practically been identical to Inko's once they realized lying to him would get them nowherr. Instead they tried to spread lies about Katsuki being a villain. That he destroyed the lives of anyone around him. He was happy to put both of them in handcuffs. Naomasa throughout the morning and into the afternoon had to remind himself multiple times that murdering them would end his career and he wouldn't be able to help Izuku. The child in his care came first no matter what.
Tsuragamae said as they watched the Bakugos be dragged off to jail, "You did good, Naomasa. They won't be able to get out of this one."
Naomasa sighed, "I wish I knew what had spooked them. No one knew what had scared Inko. All Banks knew that there was a note by her table this morning. She wouldn't let him read it and went deathly pale. Only seconds later she announced they had to move. What was on that note?"
Tsuragamae said, "We won't know until we get there and search the house. Time to get to work."
"Yes, sir," he sighed tiredly.
