Chapter 2: Welcome to Beacon

Blood dripped onto the grass, staining red. Ruby's heart continued to beat at an alarming rate, yet she felt now pain. Hesitantly, she opened one of her eyes and let out a horrified gasp at the sight before her. Her blood ran cold and her hands got clammy, her breath quickened.

"S-Sirius..." Ruby whimpered, eyes shrinking to pinpricks.

Standing in front of her protectively was Sirius. The boy was scared out of his mind as he held the stinger of the Deathstalker back. He didn't know what came over him. He was terrified, still was. But seeing Ruby about to meet a grim demise spurred something within him. A heroic flame that burned brightly. The next thing he knew, his body had moved on it's on. He didn't have enough time to push Ruby out of the way, not without him getting impaled instead, so he had to block the hit.

Admittedly stupid of him. He raised his hands to block it, and as a result, the stinger pierced straight through. The pain was agonizing, unlike anything he'd ever felt before. It took all his willpower not to scream in agony, not to cry. He whimpered softly and slowly peered over his shoulder, tears swelling up within his eyes, yet they never fell. He gave her a reassuring grin, even if it was shaky and strained from the pain.

"H-Hey..."

"S-Sirius! You're hurt! Why didn't you use your aura?! Why did you do that?!" Ruby shrieked, her skin growing pale as she saw the stinger wriggle inside Sirius' wound, causing the boy more discomfort.

"I... I dunno what aura is, but... my body moved on it's own. I guess..." Sirius let out a pained, choked laugh. He bit through the pain, teary eyes filled with a fiery passion and determination as he glared deep into the soulless eyes of the Deathstalker. "I couldn't just watch you die!"

Ruby's eyes widened in awe as Sirius released a roar of effort and slammed his foot into the faceplate of the scorpion Grimm with all his might. There was a crack, and the Deathstalker screeched, violently wrenching it's stinger out of the white-haired boy's hands and staggering back. This action spurred everyone else on. Weiss dashed forth and slashed at the massive elder Grimm to push it back, with Yang aiding her in her efforts, looking absolutely livid.

Sirius stumbled onto his backside and hissed softly, staring at the gaping hole in his hand. He could already feel his arm going numb. Whether that was from pain or adrenaline, he couldn't tell.

Blake rushed up to Ruby and Sirius, swiftly cutting the Nevermore feather pinning her to the floor, before rushing to Sirius' side and checking up on him. She grimaced when she saw vicious black veins throb around his arm.

"... Is that bad?" Ruby asked hesitantly as she picked up Crescent Rose.

"It depends. Young Deathstalker stings only release toxins that make you sick for at least a day without an Aura to filter them out, and a couple hours at most with Aura." Blake frowned, tracing a finger around one of the veins. "But a Deathstalker of that age and size... the toxins could be lethal. Especially with someone with no Aura."

"I can DIE?!" Sirius yelped with frightful, wide eyes.

"It shouldn't be instantaneous, but if we don't get the poison out fast, you'll definitely come close." Blake muttered, taking the cloth wrapped around her wrist and tying it around his wound tightly. "That should stop the bleeding."

"Thanks..."

"We need to get you to the infirmary!" Ruby frowned and looked around. Yang and Weiss were holding off the Deathstalker with the help of Pyrrha, while Nora and Ren kept the Nevermore from unleashing more feathers by launching grenades and bullets at the flying beast respectively. "We don't have to fight these things..."

Ruby's eyes widened. "GUYS! We don't have to fight! Our objective is to get the relics and return to the the headmaster!"

"Shoot, she's right!" Jaune, nodding in agreement, rushing towards the podium to grab a chess piece. "Running and living is something I can get behind! Besides, we have an injured with us! Let's grab the relics and go!"

Everyone looked at each other and nodded. Yang reloaded Ember Celica and fired two shotgun rounds into the Deathstalker's eyes to temporarily blind it. Then she backed off. Weiss was to soon follow suite, but she quickly stabbed Mystrenaster in the ground and flicked the chamber, conjuring more Ice Dust and manifesting a massive glacier of ice to hold the large scorpion Grimm in place.

Once they got their relics, Ruby and Blake helped Sirius up, and together, the group made a break for the cliffside. And while the Deathstalker was frozen in ice, it wouldn't last forever. Things weren't so easy though. The giant Nevermore was on their tail, and with a mighty flap of it's wings, it fired yet another barrage of feathers. They cut through the air like bullets, causing everyone to scattering and take cover.

Ren clicked his tongue in frustration, unfurling Storm Flower and rushing out of cover. "NORA!"

Nora blinked and nodded quickly, grabbing Magnihild and leaped out of covering. She started assaulting the Nevermore with grenades. They exploded in a burst of pink dust, averting the avian Grimm away. It also gave them cover, leaving it open for Ren to swoop in and release his own hail of bullets upon it. It bounced off it's thick hide, but made it fly back as to not be pelted any further. "EVERYONE TO THE BRIDGE! GO GO GO!"

They made a break for it once more, Ruby using her Semblance to quickly scale up to a high vantage point ahead of the others, shifting Crescent Rose from it's scythe mode to it's sniper mode and toom aim, firing at the Nevermore to keep it on the move. Making it to the middle of the bridge, Sirius stumbled over himself with a grimace, being caught by Yang.

"Woah, you okay?" Yang frowned, keeping the boy steady.

"J-Just fine... a bit woozy." Sirius laughed sheepishly, waving off her concern.

Blake stared at the boy incredulously. Her ears twitched and she peered over her shoulder, eyes widening in shock before screaming: "EVERYONE, GET OUT OF THE WAY!" A glowing yellow stinger slammed into the ground, kicking up dirt in debris as everyone jumped out of the way. The Deathstalker had managed to break out, and it looked absolutely livid, hissing loudly and snapping it's pincers.

"Holy shit, that's scary..." Jaune muttered fearfully, holding up Crocea Mors in defense.

"I think it's glaring at me." Sirius grimaced uncomfortably.

"We need to get across the bridge!" Weiss spun the chamber of Mystrenaster in preparation.

"Good idea," Yang nodded, cocking Ember Celica and jogging forward. "Let's-!"

"GUYS LOOK OUT!"

Ruby's warning was a little too late as the Nevermore crashed into the bridge, breaking it in half with its massive body and weight. The sudden shift in force and gravity sent Weiss, Yang, and Blake flying onto the otherside, while Jaune, Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora remained where they were, facing off against the Deathstalker. Sirius however, wasn't so lucky.

Having stood in the middle of the bridge, Sirius quickly found himself plummeting. A hasty move to find purchase as to not fall to his death led to him grasping the tailfeather of the Nevermore and taking to the skies. He let out a girlish scream as the winds rushed past his face, and all he could do was hang on for dear life.

"GET ME OFF THIS THING! I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT!"

"DON'T LET GO OR YOU'LL FALL!"

"WHAT DO YOU THINK I'M TRYING TO DO?!"

Sirius grimaced and began to pull himself up. Inch by inch, he got further onto the back of the Nevermore. His heart pounded in his chest, and he desperately wanted to throw up. Peering off to the side, he could see how high he was in the air, which made the feeling all the worse. He groaned and looked away, huffing for air.

What do I do...? How do I help? The sound of gunshots was numbing to his ears, blasts of Energy Dust pelted the side of the Nevermore and veered it off course. He dug his fingers into it's back, causing it to screech loudly. He felt like his ears were going to burst, but he couldn't cover them or else he'd fall.

Sirius licked his lips nervously and an idea came to mind. Slowly but surely, he crawled up to the crown of the Nevermore and took in a breath. Can't believe I'm doing this... let's put that super strength to use! Steeling his nerves, Sirius grabbed the sides of the bone like mask of the Nevermore, and tugged with all his mind and strength.

The sudden action caused the beast's body to lurch upwards, letting out another pained shriek as it felt as though the mask melded to it's body would be torn off at any given moment. It flapped it's wings wildly to right itself in the air, forcing Sirius to grip on tighter unless he lose his balance and fall. The boy sucked in a breath and screamed at the top of his lungs:

"AIM FOR IT'S BELLY OR SOMETHING!!"

The girls looked at one another in shock but nodded nonetheless and took aim, firing after shot into the underbelly of their massive avian adversary. The damage was far more effective, as the underbelly of the Nevermore contained far softer tissue and lacked the protection of it's steel-like feathers. Another shriek of pain proved their efforts weren't in vain.

Sirius groaned and raised a fist. With a roar of effort, he brought it down with all his strength. The mask of the Nevermore cracked and nearly shattered. An eye burst open and splattered blood across his face, yet he ignored it in favor of the task at hand. The force of his punch caused the Nevermore's body to suddenly spike downwards, hitting a nosedive. Sirius screamed in alarm and jumped off, only to scream louder as he fell from several feet in the air, and nearly hit the ground.

Blake caught him however, and landed on a nearby stable pillar. Ruby's eyes widened, and a plan had already formed. "I have a plan! Weiss, pin it down before it can get back up!"

Weiss looked at her in confusion but shook her head and leapt off the platform. She called upon her Semblance and locked on the remainder of her Ice Dust. Her aura flared in a thin sheen of white energy and she let our a cry of effort, stabbing her blade into the ground. A glyph of titanic proportions manifested beneath the falling Nevermore. Two spikes of ice shot out, piercing the wings of the beasts and sending it crashing against the cliff side. She narrowed her eyes and extended her reach, and more ice burst from the ornate circle, covering the Nevermore up to it's chest.

With the Grimm pinned to the wall, Ruby whirled around to face Yang and Blake. "Yang, Blake! I need a slingshot!"

The pair of black and yellow exchanged a glance and nodded. Dropping Sirius, Blake unlatched the kusarigama function of Gambol Shroud and threw it towards Yang. The blonde caught it and swiftly stabbed the blade into the side of the pillar she stood on, while Blake wrapped the ribbon portion around her end of the pillar. Once they knew it was secure, they sent Ruby a thumbs up.

"WEISS!"

Weiss turned to see Ruby flip onto the ribbon, unfurling Crescent Rose in it's scythe mode and leaning against the curved blade, her hand nestled on the trigger. Weiss' eyes widened and she summoned a black gravity to lock in it place. The sudden increase in gravity threatening to pull Ruby and the ribbon back, building tension.

"Of course you'd come up with a plan this asinine." Weiss scoffed lightly, sweat dripping down her chin as she maintained the hold on her Semblance.

"Can you make the shot?" Ruby asked, glancing at her partner.

"Tch. Can I?"

"... Can y-"

"OF COURSE I CAN!"

Weiss snapped her fingers and released the hold on her Semblance just as Ruby pulled the trigger and drew upon the power of her own Semblance. A powerful shockwave rippled through the air as Ruby shifted into a tornado of rose petals, reaching peak velocity, a cone of air gradually began to surround her body. Weiss thrusted a hand outwards and summoned a line of glyphs along the cliff to act as a platform for Ruby.

The moment her feet touched the first glyph, she fired more rounds from Crescent Rose, each recoil from each shot boosting her momentum and sending her upwards. The blade of her scythe hooked around the neck of the Nevermore, threatening to halt all her speed. But she didn't stop. She roared with all of her might, using her Semblance to accelerate herself further. Her body blurred as she dragged the Nevermore along the cliff. Everyone watched on in tense anticipation and awe.

A final scream of effort came from Ruby as she reached the edge. The blade cut deeper, and with one final pull of her trigger, she sliced right through the neck of the Nevermore, decapitating it with one swift move. Landing on the cliffside, Ruby panted for air, nearly stumbling over herself. But she was victorious. They won. And she proved such by thrusting her fist into the air, grinning brightly as she continued to suck in greedy gulps of air.

"HELL YEAH! THAT'S MY SISTER!" Yang whooped, thrusting a fist into the air with an exhilarated grin. "THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!"

She's strong for her age. Blake blinked, and smiled, nodding her head.

Respect gleamed in Weiss' eyes, and she let out a groan, stabbing Mystrenaster into the floor to stop herself from collapsing.

As Sirius clumsily climbed down the pillar he sat on, he couldn't help but stare at Ruby with a look of open admiration and shock. These girls were no older than him, and they managed to pull off a feat like this. He stared at the decomposing body of the Nevermore and shook his head with a laugh.

It's like I'm in an anime or something... He thought incredulously. But it held it's own feeling of excitement.

Sirius let out a grunt of surprise when Yang threw an arm around his shoulder and tugged him into a side hug. The white-haired boy almost let out a strangled wheeze as his face was right next to her massive bosom. A rosy blush spread across his face and his eyes nearly bulged out of his skull.

"You did pretty good out there, Shorty!" Yang complimented with a grin. "Yanking on a Nevermore with the threat of falling to your death? That takes some serious balls!"

"Don't scare him more than he probably already is." Blake dryly remarked, before giving Sirius a nod. "But she's right. You did good."

"I didn't do that much." Sirius sheepishly muttered, glancing off to the side. "Not as much as you guys. I was pretty much deadweight."

"Whaaat? Not everyone can fight giant monsters. We weren't getting any good damage in 'till you stepped in! Be proud of yourself!"

"Yes. Any kind of contribution, no matter how small, matters."

Sirius smiled bashfully at the praise and nodded his head absentmindedly. "T-Thanks... guess you're right." He found himself glancing towards Weiss, as if mentally asking for her opinion.

She noticed his stare, and met it for a brief moment in silence before huffing and peering off to the side. "... Your performance was... satisfactory. For a civilian."

He smiled brightly, their combined praise caused pride to swell within him. He gave into the urge to thank them again, but before he even could, his entire body seemed to lock up and freeze. He felt numb all over. Like he'd collapse any minute. Sweat seeped from every pore of his body, and his breathing quickened.

Hard to breathe... feels like my heart is about to burst...! Sirius let out a strangled wheeze and collapsed to his knees, clutching his chest. He heard traces of alarmed outcries, but it was all becoming white noise. The only thing he could hear was his own breaths and heartbeat.

His eyes drooped slowly as he collapsed onto his side. His vision blurred and be could make out Ruby and the others surrounding him. He felt the sensation of being lifted up into strong arms before blacking out.

[HUNTER]

It felt as though he was floating through water. He couldn't... feel, as though he were numb to everything. Floating in nothingness. An endless, dark abyss. Sirius wondered if he had died. He was scared. Of dying. He never got to say goodbye to his parents. Ruby, Weiss, Yang, Blake... they seemed nice. He wished he could have gotten to talk to them more. They could have been friends...

You're not dead. Not yet.

Who... said that? Sirius felt a tiredness wash over him. There was a flash of light, and he couldn't help but wince. Soon, an overwhelming feeling of power eclipsed him, far beyond anything his mind could comprehend. He felt like his mind would snap in two and his very being would be stripped away from him.

Wake up. There is still much to do...

As his consciousness and body alike were dragged into the light ahead. The parting words that were given to him would forever be burned into his memory.

Do not disappoint us.

Sirius let out a short gasp of breath as his eyes snapped open. Sweat matted his face and his heart began to race as he met an unfamiliar ceiling. It was cold, and the sound of a beeping monitor drew his attention. He looked around and began to calm down. It looked like he was in an hospital room. That... made sense.

So I'm not dead. That's good... Sirius let out a sigh of relief, slumping against the soft mattress he rested on. He looked down at himself to see he was in a hospital gown.

. . .

Did someone change me in my SLEEP?!

The door to the room slid open and Sirius unconsciously tensed, turning towards the source. A woman standing at about 5'6" with light mocha skin and ruby red eyes stepped inside, wearing a button up nurse dress-shirt that hugged tightly to her body and showed off her bust and curves in a pleasurable way, with black latex gloves and steel-toed boots. Strawberry blonde hair done up in a tight bun, and safety goggles fastened on top of her head.

The woman hummed, tapping away at a futuristic looking tablet that Sirius had never seen before. She noticed Sirius up and about, and smiled brightly. "Ah! You're awake."

"Uh... yeah." Sirius awkwardly nodded, giving her a confused look. "Who are you?"

"Celestia Viola Peach," The woman, Peach, supplied with a kind smile. "But I am commonly called Professor Peach here. So you can just call me that."

"Oh--okay. Uh, can you tell me where I am?"

"You're in Beacon Academy's infirmary. You were brought here by Team RWBY after the initiation." Peach hummed, glancing down at her tablet. She muttered something about vitals under her breath, but Sirius didn't care much. It was probably a bunch of medical nonsense he wouldn't understand, anyway. "Apparently you were injected with Deathstalker poison straight from the stinger. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but the toxins from a Deathstalker become far more dangerous with age."

"Okay..."

"With Aura, the natural healing factor granted would create anti-bodies to fight against the poison before it could become lethal and harmful for your body. But you had no Aura when you were injected." Peach frowned, brows furrowing as she glanced up from her tablet to give Sirius a look. "We tried unlocking your Aura but we... couldn't. It was almost as if your body was rejecting it, or simply locked us off. Regardless, with Aura out of the question we had to do it the old fashion way. Luckily we have antibiotics in place in case one's Aura ran out."

"... Right." Sirius nodded dumbly in response.

"Though it is intriguing. Despite having no Aura, your body has healed at an alarming rate. In only a few days you've returned to peak condition! Those without their Aura unlocked typically take about a week to come back to health, especially with Deathstalker venom that powerful." There was a gleam in Peach's eye that Sirius didn't like. The giggle that came after sent a chill up his spine. "It's... fascinating~"

"Uhhhhhh..."

"Now, now... you don't want to scare the young man, do you, Peach?"

The two turned to see a grey-haired man dressed in green step into the room with a cane in hand, wearing a small, amused smirk that was almost fatherly in nature. It put Sirius at ease, as Peach took on a look of surprise.

"Ozpin! Sorry, I may have slipped up juuuuust a bit there.." Peach laughed nervously, bopping her head.

"It's quite alright, Peach." Ozpin sent the woman a small grin, shaking his head. "Thank you for your time in looking after the boy. But I would like to have a few words with him alone, if you wouldn't mind."

"Oh, of course not!" Peach shook her head with a smile and made her way to the door. She paused and glanced in Sirius' direction. "Your body may be fully healed, but I still suggest that you rest for the majority of the day. And don't overexert yourself."

As she stepped out and the door slid shut, Sirius sat there as Ozpin watched the boy with that same lax smile. Though there was a glint in his eye. An analytical stare, eyeing Sirius' every move. The slightest twitch. Sirius sweat-dropped and smiled in a sheepish manner. "... Hi."

"Hello," Ozpin greeted kindly, taking a seat near Sirius' bedside and folding his hands together. "How are you feeling?"

"Fine. Better than fine, actually." Sirius looked down at his hands with an unreadable frown. "It's... kinda scary."

"Oh?"

"Yeah," Sirius nodded, sighing and slumping against his bed. "I was just, normal like... what? A few days ago? I must've been out a while. But I was never this strong, fast, durable. I never healed this quickly, either. Suddenly I wake up in the middle of nowhere with superpowers, and then I'm fighting monsters straight out of a comic book."

"You have never encountered a Grimm before?" Ozpin raised a brow, leaning back in his seat. "They are far more common than you think. So is the concept of aura... yet you seem to not know of that, either."

"I don't," Sirius shook his head head, frowning softly. "Those monsters... Grimm? I've never seen them a day in my life. And you guys keep talking about Aura, but I dunno what that is, either."

"The Creatures of Grimm are beings of destruction," Ozpin started, seeming to turn on a 'lecture mode' befitting a man running a school. "Their origin and creation are unknown, but what is known is that they prey on humans, and have plagued our world for centuries. They nearly drove humanity to extinction, were it not for the discovery of aura and Dust. Aura can be described as the light of one's soul. Everyone has aura, as every living thing has a soul. When one's Aura is unleashed, their limiters are broken, giving them superhuman abilities and a natural shield that protects them from harm. With this power, we were capable of defeating the Grimm, and, with that, the Huntsman were formed."

Sirius let the information soak in, nodding his head. And Ozpin continued. "Which makes it odd... that you, a human being, does not possess an Aura."

Sirius paused, blinking in surprise as Ozpin leaned forward. "Do you care to explain to me?"

"Uhm... I dunno. This is the first time I've heard of Grimm and Aura... ever." Sirius huffed, brows creasing in thought. "It's almost like I'm in..."

Trailing off, Sirius' gradually widened, and he gasped. "Another world!"

Ozpin raised a brow. "Pardon?"

"Well, I don't know what aura and Grimm are. And apparently that's common knowledge." Sirius explained, cupping his chin with a head. "And I don't have amnesia. I perfectly remember everything before ending up here. So unless time travel is real and I got thrust into a post-apocalyptic future... I gotta be from another world."

"... and say that you are from another world," Ozpin inquired, his tone neither condescending nor skeptical. More... curious. "Do you have any proof? I do not believe you to be a liar, but I can't simply take this kind of information from word of mouth alone."

"Uh... right. Where are my clothes?" Sirius sheepishly asked. Ozpin pointed off to the side, and following his gaze, there his clothes rested on the counter near his bed, nearly folded.

Sirius reached over for his clothes, digging into his pockets. His brows furrowed for a moment, but then his face lit up as he felt his phone. He pulled the device out and showed it to Ozpin. "This is a phone. A communication device on my world." He turned it on and went into his gallery before handing it to Ozpin. The man inspected the device before looking through the photos.

There wasn't much, family photos, Sirius sitting among friends, various selfies of places Ozpin didn't recognize. Relatively mundane. But what caught his eye was one selfie in particular... the scenery depicted a starlit sky, and Sirius' grinning face. Oddly enough, the boy's hair was brown in the photo, and not white. But that wasn't what caught it Ozpin's attention.

It was the moon.

And it was whole.

"The moon..." Ozpin muttered with wide eyes, his brows furrowing. "... is whole."

"Uh, yeah." Sirius blinked in confusion. "Yours isn't?"

"No. It's been shattered for centuries."

"... What about the tides?"

That question wnet ignored as Ozpin handed Sirius' phone back to him and stood to his feet. "Well then, everything seems to check out."

"Right." Sirius nodded, holding his phone gently. He sat there in silence, chewing the inside of his cheek. "What now?"

Ozpin raised a brow, and Sirius continued. "I mean. What now...? I dunno how I got here or how to get back home, and I have no place to stay. I dunno anything about this world, either..."

"That is quite the predicament, isn't it?" Ozpin said with an amused smirk. "Tell me..."

"Sirius. Sirius Caelan."

Ozpin nodded in thanks. "Tell me, Mr. Caelan. If you were given the chance to be a hero... would you take it?"

Sirius looked at Ozpin in confusion, before shifting his gaze towards his lap. The boy sat there in silence, but eventually nodded his head. "Y-Yeah. I think I would. I've always admired the heroes I watched on TV, or read in comic books. As a kid, I always imagined what it'd be like if I were in there shoes..."

"And, now I'm in some fantastical, alien world. I have these weird powers and abilities that I don't understand. The only option is to be one... right?" Sirius shook his head, frowning and clenching his fists. Onyx colored eyes filled with conviction. "No, I have to be one. It's scary, and I might die along the way, I may never see my family again, but if I have the power to help others, I should."

He turned to face Ozpin with a shaky, determined grin. "S-So if I had the chance to be one... then yeah. I'd take that chance."

Ozpin smiled, satisfied with his answer. Nodding his head, the headmaster straightened his back. "Then, Sirius Caelan, I welcome you to Beacon Academy. Here, you will train to become a Huntsman. A defender of the people, a hero to the masses."

Sirius looked at Ozpin in shock, and quickly nodded his head. "T-Thank you, sir!"

"No need to thank me." Ozpin chuckled softly. "You will not hage to worry about credentials or your background. I'll take care of that. Unfortunately, with your recent addition, the student number for this year is uneven, and we won't get new students until next semester."

"... Oh. Then where does that leave me?"

"Well," Ozpin smirked. "I believe I can bend some rules..."

"I'll... leave that to you, then." Sirius sweat-dropped, blinking owlishly as a thought came to mind. "Sooo, where am I gonna sleep? Because I don't find the idea of sleep in a cold hospital room appealing."

Ozpin chuckled, tapping his cane. "Because your addition to the student roster is so sudden, it'll take at least a day to set up one of the guest dormitories reserved for transfer students or students coming from other students. You'll have to stay with one of the established teams of this year for a day until then."

"Oh, okay. So, who do I stay with...?"

Ozpin's smile took on an amused edge one again as he walked towards the door and casually slid it open. There was a yelp of shock and surprise as a group of girls Sirius knew all too well crashed and tumbled into the room. Team RWBY collectively groaned as the sprawled out on the floor in a messy heap. Ozpin glanced back at Sirius, his smirk growing as Ruby raised her head and waved at Sirius with a nervous grin.

"...Uh... hiiiiii..."

Sirius paled. Ozpin chuckled.

"Mr. Caelan? Welcome to Beacon."
