Chapter 8: Routines and trades.
Chapter 8 everyone! With this we give start to new arc set between the kissing operation and the beach episode! How long will it take to return to canon? Who knows! Just enjoy for now!

Plantation 13 'Cerasus', Milstinteinn, 2 days later, 6:00 am...
After the pact was signed, they gave the children of squad 13 a day to relax and recover before their mentors began with a training routine for them. According to the navigators of both plantations, they would reach the rendezvous area for the defense of the ark in 2 weeks. It could be reduced by 1 day or 2 if they were lucky to find a shortcut to go through the mountain zone that is located south of the rendezvous zone, a very risky decision as those mountains were full of klaxosaurs nests. They agreed that they would later check on that option as for now they focused on the itinerary and arraging temporary quarters for Orion and Sally. Because of SMC safety protocols, only the captains of a squadron could be temporarily relocated at another plantation while leadership was transferred their second-in-command on their absence, meaning that the doctor only had Arthur and White Glint for analyzing. And that is IF he could break their firewall, for whoever worked on the electronics of the NEXTs was clearly talented on cybersecurity and it wasn't possible to get near them physically as the captains had brought two chicken-walker drone mechs with them to act as sentries. They were called "Muscle Tracers" or MT for short, were only half the size of their franxx and even if they were weaker than them, they still carried enough weaponry to become a danger to them. Admiral Dassia explained that MT were easier to mass produce and acted as support. A small number of them were more than enough to contain Conrad's and even Moho's. The point was clear: the RF wasn't keen on sharing their secrets with APE anytime soon.
The point was, the doctor wanted to analyze them very badly, and thought bringing them as mentors for the children would make it easy to uncover their secrets. How wrong he was, but he wasn't going to give up like that. After all, he was a scientist and the career of one was always full of challenges but the rewards were always worth them.
Dr. Franxx: "After all, my two major achievements came at a very personal price... I just need an opportunity to claim this one."
He said that as he looked through the cameras seeing the new mentors alongside Naomi and Raven ready to start the new routine for Squad 13...
Naomi: - Can't we just, let them have a few more minutes of sleep? Even me and Raven are still sleepy. -
They were all wearing sports gear with the colors of their uniforms: a simple shirt alongside some shorts. Naomi was finally given the all clear to pilot again as her injuries finally healed.
Orion: - Nah, they had a whole day to relax and have fun. Wars aren't won by people who live in comfort but by those who strive to reach it... and the klaxosaurs won't be as kind as we are. -
Raven: *yawns* - No use Naomi, Orion likes to do this with the nuggets back at the academy, so he is not having mercy with them. -
Naomi: *Sighs*
Orion looked at his watch while he held a trumpet on his left and once the clock reached 6:05 am...
Orion: - Showtime. -
He started playing "Reveiller" with his trumpet very loudly and soon enough the lights on the boardhouse went on. He kept on playing until all of the children were coming out of the house very pissed for the loud awakening.
Ichigo: - What is wrong with you?! Is 6 in the morning! -
Orion: - More like what's wrong with YOU?! We agreed to train you and this is how you start on your first session?! By being late?! -
All of the children were confused at his answer until Raven said aloud: - Guys, I told you that Orion was going to do this. Is the way we trained in the academy and is the way he is going to train you. -
Zorome: - What kind of crazy person wakes up people to train this early!? -
Orion: - The kind of person that actually SURVIVES out there you maggot! -
Zorome: - What did you just call me?! -
Orion: - Maggot! And I will continue to do so until you learn to respect your superiors, maggot! -
Zorome angrily rushed at him in an attempt to punch him only to be tripped by Orion with a single movement making him fall down into the ground hard. Miku laughed at her partner's demise as Orion pinned him down with his foot on Zorome's back before saying: - Here's a tip for you: learn to take an insult with dignity kid or otherwise you will sink yourself lower. *Turns to Miku* Oh, you think this is funny? Your partner receiving a bit of karma? -
Miku: *giggles* - Of-f course it-it is! -
Orion: - Oh! Then how about I make the TWO of you receive a punishment? -
Miku shut up at that as everyone else gasped: - What?! But I didn't...! -
Orion: - Do anything! EXACTLY! You didn't stop your partner from committing insubordination and simply watched! Let that be a VERY important lesson today children! If one of you steps out of line, then EVERYONE will be punished! -
Hiro: - But that's totally unfair! -
Orion: - I know! But everyone here belongs in a squad, right!? As a squad, you go into battle, as a squad you take care of each other and as a squad you SUFFER for each other too! From today on, think very well about what your actions will do not only to you but to your partners for if one falls then everybody else falls too. Specially when going against the blue dinos out there. -
Everyone reflected on his words and realized what he was saying was true, in previous operations, even with just one of their franxx disconnecting was enough to make their sorties very deadly. It was luck or convenient intervetion, mostly from Strelizia, that saved their lives those times and even then, they were very close shaves.
Ichigo: "He is not wrong. The mission at the mines turned bad when Argentea was knocked out, then the battle against that worm klaxosaur wasn't going in our favour until Strelizia arrived, and then, during the kissing operation, Hiro almost... died. And I almost risked my squad's integrity because of my grief..."
Hiro: "I understand what he says... I made Naomi fail at the final test and almost sent her to death when that klaxosaur crushed her transport... not to say I was a burden for my friends before I met Zero Two..."
Orion eventually stepped off Zorome and raised him up before pushing him back into his squad: - As long as we are your mentors, you will learn both the easy and the hard way everything that will make you go from nuggets taking their first flight into an exemplary squad even if it means beating you to the verge of death to make you learn. Lives upon lives depend on your actions, efforts and decisions. Don't waste that potential you have. Go to your rooms and get changed, the training clothes will be in your lockers. -
Everyone soon did so while Orion started playing "Retreat" followed by "To the colors", its musical tone echoing through the dome.
Hours later, lunch time, 2:00 pm...
The rest of the morning was spent doing lots and lots of physical exercise. They started by doing some stretches and running around the dome, followed by situps, stirrups, pushups, and all sorts of ups that lasted an eternity for the poor Parasites. Even Zero Two, the most athletic of everyone, was winded once the morning exercise marathon was over. While both Zorome and Miku served their punishment in the form of extra exercise, the rest of the squadron went to take a bath, eat their breakfast and basically slump exhausted on the sofa. They were later joined by Miku and Zorome, and both were so tired that they even collapsed on each other on the sofa without complaining for once!
Everyone: "Huh, so THAT'S what calms them down..."
As everyone thought that was the end of their struggle, they were horrified to later see Sally bringing some mats...
Sally: - I hope you enjoyed your break kids, we're doing yoga now. -
To be fair, yoga was actually relaxing but damn did it made some of them wonder if Sally had any actual bones on her as she pulled off many impressive poses with ease while some of the boys and girls had to deal with a few cramps. After that, the children were given a break to shower off before they were then pulled into the library were they were given lessons about military tactics of the old world alongside a brief history lesson about the discovery of magma energy which to be fair was a little boring. However, the highlights of the session were when Orion talked about the NEXTs of his squad.
Orion: - So, I think is time we spoke about something important on squad management: roles. -
Kokoro: - Isn't that something that all of us already know? -
Orion: - Yeah, the name is self-explanatory. However, I need to ask you kids, what exactly is your specific role in your squad? Obviously Ichigo is the leader but what about the rest of you? -
Ichigo: - Well... can I answer for my squadmates in this one? -
Orion: - Sure, go ahead. -
Ichigo: - Commander Hachi told me that the doctor had designed our franxx for specific roles. As you said, Delphinium is designed for a leader role, Strelizia is our strongest unit, Chlorophytum is for close fire support, Genista for long fire support and Argentea is the scout unit. -
Orion: - And are your teammates acting according to their roles? -
Ichigo: - Weeeeell... -
Orion: *sighs* - You're still new so it is to be expected. That is something we are gonna have to specifically train on you in the future. -
Goro: - What is it that we're doing wrong then sensei? -
Orion: - Huh, from where did you get that word? -
Goro: - Raven told us about it when I asked him if there was a way to respectfully talk to you and he told us to use that word. -
Orion: - Well, he isn't wrong, but usually we use the word 'sir' in these cases... but you know what? I'm letting you use that one, a token of trust from my part to you. -
Everybody smiled at the declaration before he deployed a hologram on the main table...
Orion: - As for your previous question, you haven't done anything wrong except not explore strategies and techniques to fulfill your roles. As of right now, you got the basics of how to act and work as a squad to defeat bigger enemies, you just haven't explored alternative ways yet to fight them. To give you an idea about it, I will use the NEXTs of my squad and some operations we have performed as an example. First, let's know each and every single one of them. *The hologram shows a NEXT with round cabin, compact body and armed with miniguns and shoulder missile launchers (Firefox from SMC)* This is Firefox, the designated unit for close fire support. Joshua and Ning pilot this one. Their role, even though is self-explanatory, also means that they are responsible for suppressing fire, anti-air action and sometimes to act as a mobile turret thanks to its miniguns. -
Naomi: - Isn't that the role that White Glint covers too? -
Orion: - Not exactly Naomi, White Glint was designed as an assault weapon carrier since the day its blueprint was made, a very versatile burst-fire assault weapon since it is capable of switching many of his modules. Firefox, on the other hand, was designed as a defensive unit. It is slower than White Glint but has higher fire rate, higher ammo capacity, higher durability and its missiles pack a more powerful punch than White Glint's. Its bullets are also specially designed to force klaxosaurs to literally step back as they have high-stopping fire. So basically, we call this the 'DPS' role. Fire lots of rounds that can cover or clear a wide area, the higher the rate of fire the better like it can be shown in this clip... *a clip plays showing Firefox standing on top of a ruined APE plantation, laying down covering fire stopping a pack of klaxosaurs to infiltrate through some breaches on the defenses, allowing his squadmates to make an organized retreat.* Oh yeah, and also that sweet BRRRRRRRRT from the guns is music for our ears. -
The hologram changed into a big orange NEXT with 4 metal beams on its back, a fusion canon on his right arm and a electrified plate on its left (Hotsteel from the SMC).
Orion: - This one is one that I'm pretty sure our red-horned girl is gonna love... (Zero Two: - Don't call me that. -) This is Hotsteel, the tank of the squad and our strongest unit. It is slow in comparison to Strelizia's movements but I can guarantee you that this bad boy packs quite the punch. It uses a fusion canon on its right arm that fires projectiles as hot as the sun, while on his left he carries an electrified plate with a retractable blade that is capable of frying Conrads at the touch. Boris and Olivia pilot this one. It is designed to absorb hits that could easily disable Franxx or NEXTs and retaliate those hits with kindness to the attackers. In fact, here is a little feature that is absolutely awesome. *Hotsteel's metal beams started to move, detaching from its back, splitting in two smaller beams, making a total of 8 and then they were extended and moved into its front while also glowing red hot.* (I'm f***ing invincible!) His beams can be extended and retracted to form an explosive shielding screen that can cover his front, back and sometimes sides. Any klaxosaur that thinks that ramming will work on him its gonna have an explosive surprise waiting for it. They're also useful whenever he charges against them as shown on the next clip... *a clip plays showing Hotsteel rearranging his beams into an arrow position before he charges against a Moho class, the impact making a loud Blam! as the face of the klaxo gets blown up and Hotsteel easily captures the core.* He also has an special mode called 'Overheat' mode´, which allows him to be faster and more deadlier with his attacks. However, as the name says, it overheats its core, which can cause irreparable damage on both the NEXT and their pilots. -
Kokoro: - How exactly? -
Orion: - The core of the NEXT simulates that of the heart of their pilots in this case. If taken too much damage by either klaxosaurs or a long overheating, it will trigger a cardiac arrest on their pilots unless they activate the emergency inhibitors and even that is still painful. Both of them are aware of this and they still fight knowing the risks. -
Kokoro: - But what about their girl Aurora? What will happen if they both die one day? -
Orion: - Kokoro, she's the reason they continue fighting. If it means saving their daughter's life and future, they will take it. -
She was silent alongside everyone else: why would two adults risked everything they had for one child? Wasn't it supposed to be the other way?
Orion: - Look, I can see on your faces that it is something hard for you to comprehend so let's proceed with what a tank does, it takes hits meant for its teammates, holds the line while everyone else either retreats, supports him or focus on more urgent objectives and makes to punch back, sometimes the killing blow. *Another clip plays as Hotsteel destroys punch by punch lots of Conrads at a breach while everyone around him is firing lots of ordinance towards a Moho. Then the Moho tries to force its way in only to be stopped by Hotsteel, glowing orange before the latter aims with his fusion canon at the former and fires a powered shot that obliterates the blue dino.* -
Raven: - Don't worry Kokoro, Atlas squad likes the girl too much to even let her parents die. -
Kokoro felt a little relieved just as the hologram went to the next unit, a blue/cyan white mech that in some way looked like a sparrow and had a gun on its right hand alongside some 'feathers' on the left. ('Skylark' from the SMC.)
Orion: - This is Skylark, piloted by Sarah and Lance. It is the designated scout/pursuer/explorer unit of the squad. Their role is quite complex: scouts aren't just units to locate enemy forces, they are also needed for flanking attacks, pursue highly valuable targets and to basically harass the enemy and thin their numbers before the main force hits them or are hit by them. Skylark has a 'gliding' mode that allows her to become faster and jump higher in the air making her the perfect pursue unit in open and rocky areas. (In the game, all mechs walk or slide and can only jump or levitate for limited times before refuelling so this is a big advantage for Skylark. However, in DitF, Franxx can do this and more so in order to balance it, we made the SMC mechs more powerful.) She also has an invisible mode when she is stationary, making her the perfect scout to spring up ambushes and sneak attacks. But what makes her special is this... *Runs a clip in which Skylark is face to face with two Moho's, flanking and gliding around them, pestering them with her right handed gun 'Talon' while also avoiding their attacks. At one point, the two Moho's were aligned relatively to Skylark's position who at that moment made a movement with her left hand and that was when the children saw that the 'feathers' arranged themselves into a bird-like drone and was then launched at them. The drone went right through them as if it was a ghost before circling around them sending lightning arcs on their bodies that seemed to dissolve chunks of their flesh with each strike before returning towards its sender and disassembled itself on her arm.* That drone you just saw is called Hunt. You may have noticed before that Sarah and Lance have the name Hanji as their last one. That's because both are married and the name Hanji indicates they belong to a family. That family back at the Districts are important researchers and funders of the Armored Core program, the responsible one for the creation of our NEXTs, and because they have family members fighting in the frontlines, they gave Skylark their best technology to use, and in this case, is nanobot mass transfer. Hunt basically goes and extracts energy and mass from its prey, in this case the klaxosaurs, and carries it back to be absorbed by Skylark, meaning that she can technically self-repair herself passively or actively, a VERY useful perk in long drawn battles of attrition. -
Raven: - How is it that their family doesn't share that with the rest of the NEXTs!? That could give us a better edge on the klaxosaurs! -
Orion: - Raven, we had this discussion before. That is a family secret and the SMC will respect that as per the agreement they made when they took over the funding of the self-repair nanomachine program. -
Raven: - Goddammit... I just want my bullets to work like freaking vampire guns man! It would be awesome! -
Orion: - Beggars can't be choosers Raven... you already got enough firepower as it is. -
Raven: - *Grumbles.* -
Orion: - And before you think about it kids, no, not even you. -
Grumbles were heard before he eventually continued: - So, the scout role as said before is simple and complex at the same time: be the first one to contact and engage the enemy, outflank it, ambush it, harass it, but never fully engage it until your team is nearby or you're guaranteed to finish it off and inflict great damage. *Clip plays with Skylark going in and out of engagements very fast leaving confused klaxosaurs confused before they are swiftly wiped by artillery fire, energy bullets and all sorts of attacks belonging to allies followed by Skylark finishing off bigger klaxosaurs that are distracted by other teams of NEXTs or Franxxs.* -
Miku: - So I guess that would be Argentea's role, right? *snickers* Good luck trying to teach that to this knucklehead, he always tries to hound some glory kills. -
Zorome: - No I do not! *Everyone looks at him with a sarcastic face that says 'really?'* And what about Strelizia, if there's someone who takes the kills is her! -
Ikuno: - You're not wrong on that, but those times it was because she was needed to finish them off while nobody else could. -
Zorome simply grumbled as Orion cleared his throat and showed an hologram of a round yellow mech that... looked like a bear? ('Caramel' from SMC): - We go now for our heavy fire and artillery support unit, Caramel. Yes, I know it looks like a bear and that it looks inoffensive, but as the saying goes: 'looks can be deceiving' *The clip that follows shows that Caramels 'paws' pack quite the punch both literally and figuratively not to say that it was surprisingly agile too with its footwork* Caramel's has two forms: bear form and tank form. What you're seeing right now is the bear form, it has two powerful blaster canons inside each paw alongside a powerful retractable super canon that deploys from its 'belly' and has a powerful knockback and that goes without saying it has good melee capabilities and mobility because, well Molly and Johnny designed this one while watching 'Karate Kid'. I'm not even joking, a MOVIE and a TOY inspired them to make this thing and somehow it actually worked! *The next clip shows Caramel doing fast fist and feet attacks that SMOKED the klaxosaurs that attacked it.* And that's only on its bear form, as I said before Caramel has another form: tank form. *The next clip shows Caramel transforming from its bear form into a hovering platform with a big siege canon.* When in tank form, Caramel's mobility and melee capabilities are reduced greatly but its firepower and damage resistance are increased exponentially, not to say it also gains the ability to provide artillery cover fire and boy, is it equipped with a powerful canon. *The next clips shows Caramel in its tank form as it gives artillery support to a squad of NEXTs assaulting a klaxosaur nest, the shells doing an efficient job opening the way for them. It then shows Caramel firing shell after shell against a Moho that falls down after a few shots.* Their role is simple: bring out the heavy firepower whenever its needed at any situation while staying safely behind lines or their teammates. That role applies to Genista. -
After a nod from the Parasites, he then changed the hologram into a NEXT whose desing was the most simple of all, a femenine figure with two big wings on her shoulders.
Orion: - And now we cover the last one remaining: Andromeda. Violet and Chuck pilot her and her role is quite vast. She was designed as a hybrid for both air supremacy and close air support alongside fire support when grounded. Most of our NEXTs are capable of flying either with the use their internal boosters and their design or via the use of external equipment that helps with that. Her boosters and wings allow her to dogfight quite easily through the skies against all sorts of opponents, either if they're on land or air. Her main armament is an energy crossbow that shoots energy arrows that are quite powerful, alongside a Mass Vibration Restorable or MVR javelin that has homing capabilities and sticks to her opponents before detonation with great force and that is without including her two tactical M.O.A.B.'s. During the period between the impact and the detonation of the javelin, this one acts as a beacon which makes her energy arrows have homing capabilities against her targets and it also makes her M.O.A.B.'s deal more damage. *The next clip shows Andromeda dancing gracefully through the battlefield, lending support to her squadmates and also harassing klaxosaurs using both her javelin and her crossbow before dropping a M.O.A.B. into an unfortunate Moho, erasing it from existence.* You don't have a franxx dedicated to that kind of battle technique unfortunately but I will still say it. Air superiority units role is to make sure the skies are clear so that their allies can operate with total impunity on the ground while also giving them the necessary support they require. -
Zero Two: - And all that boring talk about roles aside, what is your plan to make us better pilots? -
Ichigo: - Zero Two! -
Orion: - Seems we got a prideful one here... as for your question, very simple, in this evening we will perform a mock battle between my squad and yours to see how you fare against us. I'm literally giving you all of what you need to expect from our mechs to make the battle easier for you, because trust me, we are NOT going easy on you. -
Zero Two: - Is that a challenge mister shining armor? -
Orion: - Of course it is. What's the point of training if you don't have an obstacle to beat? -
Zero Two: - I have pretty much beaten all of them at this point. -
Orion: - More like you haven't meet a proper one yet girl. Most of your victories were gifted to you rather than being the result of actual effort. -
Zero Two stood up as she said: - Really? Then how about this... me and my darling will duel you personally in today's battle. If we win, you will excuse us of your classes for the rest of the trip and give me sweets daily. -
Orion: - And if I win? -
Zero Two: - Then I will become a model student for you and the rest of my team, sensei. -
Orion: - Sounds fair, BUT I'm already covering that with the training, so let me add something... if I win, you and your darling will have personal lessons with me about teambonding everyday and it will with EVERYONE of your squad... -
Now THAT did caught Zero Two off-guard. Even with Ichigo's intention to try and know her, it still was hard to conceive ideas to try. Now it seems that Orion just dropped the bomb for that. After a moment of silence, she 'tch-ed' before answering: - Deal, and prepare to lose. This time, we won't be holding back. -
Orion: - I couldn't ask for more. Anyways, its almost time for lunch. Eat well, and rest for a bit before the mock battle. Dismissed! -
Which leads us to the whole squad in the dining room. They had just finished their lunch and were talking about the upcoming mock battle while Zero Two was again on her own alongside Hiro trying to make him eat a lollipop when she got a visitor...
Ichigo: - Why did you do that? -
Zero Two: - Do what? -
Ichigo: *sighs* - Challenge captain Orion, you were kind of rude to him. He is our instructor Zero Two. -
Zero Two: - And? He said it himself, he has dealt with people like me before, its not like he is very hurt about it. -
Ichigo: - That doesn't help your case, you know? Specially after what we discussed two days ago... -
Zero Two: - Well, I'm not doing something that will affect you in any way, so you should relax a little. -
Ichigo simply sighed more while bringing her left hand to her face before saying: - Zero Two, I'm willing to try my best to become your friend after everything but it's hard to do so when you continue to perform stunts like this, specially now that Hiro is with you. -
Hiro: - You don't to worry about me Ichigo, Zero Two and I are quite good with Strelizia now and we know what to do this time against Arthur. We even still got the thrusters he lended us too! -
Zero Two: - See? Even he agrees that everything will be fine. -
Ichigo: - And if it doesn't? The way you seemed to take on Orion's counter makes me think that you're still trying to stay apart from everyone except Hiro. What exactly is it that we have that makes you stay away? Eh? -
Zero Two stayed silent for a little while before she sighed and said: - Says the same people that stood away from me ever since I came here... but I guess I'm partially at fault there. Fine, you wanna know why? It's simple... I don't know how I'm supposed to act with one. -
Ichigo: - I kind of figured it out recently... and I don't blame you for lacking that. What I blame you is that you issued this challenge without even asking Hiro about it. -
Hiro: - I don't see any problem with it to be fair... -
Ichigo: - Hiro. You're officially a Parasite, there's no need to fear you're useless now. But just because you got Zero Two, doesn't mean that you should always act to please her. Put some limits at least! She involved you into a bet without your consent! Don't you realize what that could mean in the future? -
Hiro stayed silent as Ichigo sighed and said: - Just be careful out there on the duel... if you lose I will simply standby and say to both of you, 'I told you so' and that's it, okay? -
Zero Two: - Good for me. -
Hiro: - Alright... -
She left and Zero Two said: - She is persistent, I can give her that, no wonder she is your leader. -
Hiro: - OUR leader Zero Two. Just like she said, you and I are both part of this squad now. -
Zero Two: *smiles* - True. -
Hiro was silent for a little while before he said: - Hey, Zero Two, can you promise me something? -
Zero Two: - Hmm? What is it darling? -
Hrio: - No matter the result of our duel, will you please try your best to open yourself to the rest of the squad? She is right, you belong with us now and I think it would be the best for all if you also try to bond with my friends. -
Zero Two: - Hmmmm... alright, for you anything my darling. -
Hiro: - That's all I would ask for now. -
The rest of the evening was spent discussing the best way to defeat Arthur, although putting it in Raven's words...
Raven: - Zero Two, you just have made yourself a deal with a devil... I don't see a way out of this for you two. -
Zero Two: - Please, he can't be that bad, is he? -
Raven: - You have no idea... -
6:00 pm, in the middle field between the two plantations...
Both squads were now face to face on a practice field that the engineers of the Oletros managed to set up. Squad 13 alongside Atlas squad were looking at each other's mechs while also eyeing Strelizia and Arthur ready to go into blows in their duel soon...
Goro: - Wow, sensei wasn't kidding when he said that Hotsteel was a beast... -
The orange mech was MASSIVE compared to theirs, being taller than even Arthur! And considering the looks of the rest of his squadmates and how they all respect Orion as their leader, Ichigo could see what Raven meant with his previous statement.
Delphinium: - *Sighs* I told them so... -
Zorome: - Come on, cap! I'm pretty sure they can do it! Have some faith on them! -
Raven: - If you mean having faith on them NOT dying, then that's fine. -
Argentea: - Come on Raven! Can't you have some faith on them for once too? -
White Glint: - No, sorry but they're gonna lose. I'm only looking forward to how long will they last. -
The rest of the squad got worried at that...
Arthur: - Okey, are you two lovebirds ready? -
Squad 13: - Lovebirds? Raven? -

Eventually, she attacked from Arthur's left twisting her body enough to make her Pike Queen connect... but was surprised when Arthur swiftly deflected the strike using his cape! Fortunately, she also learned to avoid going for the ground and jumped to make some distance between her and Arthur.
Mitsuru: - Seems it wasn't enough though... -
White Glint: - But she did the correct thing in there: she made sure to leave until last where she was going to attack and hid it by zig-zagging instead of going in a direct line. -
Ikuno: - Wait, it doesn't make sense that a cape out of everything managed to block her strike. Unless it is made of something hard? -
Strelizia charged again, swiftly flanking Arthur's right this time and attacking him as he turned. However, he deflected the attack using his momentum and then swiftly punched her with his left on the franxx's rib. This send her sliding away before she stopped, just a few meters from the border of the arena.
White Glint: - You're right on that. Arthur's cape is made of a malleable nano-material fused with the skin of fallen klaxosaurs. It makes for a cape that is very lightweight but also harder than klaxosaur scales. -
Strelizia grumbled before charging again. This time, she jumped before reaching Arthur and attacked from above. In response, Arthur brought his cape with his left arm and angled it to act as a shield as Strelizia's strike connected. As White Glint said, the cape absorbed the attack and once Strelizia's momentum stopped, he turned making Strelizia open to his counter-attack as his right swiftly connected his sword into her back. It made her groan in pain as she was then sent into the ground before swiftly standing up and rushing in again. This time she made no effort to hide the direction of her attack as she held her pike in front. Arthur reacted accordingly by standing on guard with his sword and waited for the right moment to block. To his surprise, Strelizia swiflty change from her pike to her shield and impacted Arthur with great force! Both sled a little into the border before stopping, showing that Arthur, surprisingly had absorbed part of attack thanks to his blade holding the shield. He then twisted to his right and spiraled his frame in such a way that he managed to connect his sword into Strelizia left hip very quickly! Strelizia took the hit before backhandling her right arm, but her Pike was blocked and, in a quick reflex, Arthur countered by grabbing it at the MAGMA part and used it to throw Strelitzia away! She landed hard into the ground, grunting as he then unleashed a slashwave at her, hitting her directly. However, for some reason it was weaker than those everyone had seen before and Strelitzia took notice of that as she stood up...
Strelitzia: - I thought those hit harder than that. Are you getting tired now, mister trainer? -
Arthur: - The same I should ask to you, after all only one of us is getting beaten. -
Strelitzia: - For now... let's go darling! -
Hiro: - Alright Zero Two! -
He moved the controls to charge again... only for them to not work!

Unlike Zero Two and Hiro, Ichigo and Goro had a more tactical and calm mind and settled into a defensive technique, mostly blocking and dodging Arthur's strikes and counter-attacking when she could why also keeping an eye on his electrical surge. Delphinium just managed to turn around to see Caramel coming towards her from above her with the intention of delivering a harsh kick on her. There was no time for her to evade or block it.

Caramel went to help its squadmate and forced Strelitzia away from Firefox, the kick she received being strong enough to send her towards the Franxx whom managed to catch her and stop her momentum. Arthur soon joined his squadmates and both sides stared at each other before Ichigo said: - It all depends on them now, but right now, let's give them a piece of us! -

And as such all three of them charged at their mentors, hoping that Argentea will do her part...

Which seemed to be no good as both Argentea and Chlorophytum were having trouble with Andromeda and Skylark. The crane-like NEXT had been harassing Argentea since the moment they got split off from the rest and Chlorophytum was having trouble keeping two enemies away from her squadmate while also evading Andromeda's bolts. Skylark was relentless, many times she had almost reached Argentea with either Talon's shots or plasma blade, only the quick reflexes from Argentea's pilots and a lucky intervention from Chlorophytum saving them from being hit. However, their luck was about to ran out...
Skylark (Sarah): - A good hunter does not quit on its prey... -

She turned around in one of Skylark lunges and went towards her, claws at the ready. Skylark did the sensible thing of going backwards while shooting at her while activating her 'glide' mode. Seeing an opportunity, the pink franxx lunged towards the crane NEXT after predicting where she would be for a clean hit, only for Skylark to stop dead in her track as Chlorophytum suddenly appeared in the targeted spot!

Both NEXTs saw the very obvious tactic and tried to pursue her only for a big curtain of bullets and magma shots to block their way, forcing Andromeda to land and Skylark to regroup with her as both the purple franxx and the white NEXT continued pestering them with their shots before reloading.
Chlorophytum: - For how long do you think we can hold them off? -
White Glint: - You never know until you try... but not for long... let's hope Argentea knows that. -
Fortunately for them, Zorome and Miku were for once working together and focused on one goal...

At that moment Delphinium, Strelizia and Genista were barely holding against Firefox, Caramel and Arthur but the announcement made their attention falter just as they needed it the most. Genista was the first to go down as Caramel just a power jump to get behind her, the shockwave making her drop her guard, leaving her open to a barrage of punches that sent her into Strelitzia, leaving both Franxx open to Firefox's bullets. They were soon getting hit by too many of them that Delphinium tried to rescue them by attacking Firefox, only to be side-slashed by Arthur, then paralized by another surge which unfortunately made her kiss the ground as Arthur charged at her and made her trip. Both Strelizia and Genista then received a big impact from Caramel's super canon which knocked them out. Delphinium meanwhile was immobilized under Arthur's weight.
F.O. Douglas: /Delphinium, Strelitzia and Genista are knocked out, 2 attackers remaining.../
White Glint: - Dammit, dammit! -
Both him and Chlorophytum were the only ones still 'alive' and both weren't having any luck. White Glint's ammo reserves were running low and Chlorophytum's magma reserves too. And with their four of their teammates down, it would be only a matter of time before the rest regrouped and finished them off...
Chlorophytum: - What do we do?! -

She did so and both rushed towards the flag in one final attempt to clutch the match... but Skylark and Andromeda weren't letting them. The former launched Hunt towards the moment they turned and unfortunately weren't aware until Hunt had its 'claws' on Chlorophytum.

Naomi: - Hang on Ikuno! -
White Glint turned its weapons around but Raven stopped her from shooting: - Wait! You're gonna hit her and not Hunt! -

Morale on squad 13 was low after the match. Not only did everyone lose, they were CRUSHED by Atlas squad. Needless to say, it revealed them how far they have to train to even the odds against their mentors and that if that was how an elite squadron in the SMC operated then they wondered how the regular ones fared. With such level of skill, it made them wonder how hard the battle for the ark was going to be. They had it hard enough against the Reaper, so the thought of more klaxosaurs similar to it or even deadlier than it send chivers down their spines... just how screwed were they?
Zorome: - Dammit... just dammit... -
Raven: - There, there man... in all honesty, you managed to almost reach the flag. -

Raven was about to answer but somebody else beat him to it...
Orion: - Bad enough that even Lance found the match boring... -
Everyone looked at him as he entered before he continued: - I would say that you weren't that bad considering you almost reached your objective and managed to hold on for a few minutes against us but man, even Conrads are more challenging to fight against. -
Raven and Naomi: - Wow, way to rub more salt into the wound. -
Futoshi: - It kind of freaks me out how you two said that in sync. -
Kokoro: - I think it's kind of cute. -
Zero Two: - Mmmhhh... -
She discretly looked at the two, observing their interactions and she wasn't the only one. Ikuno also looked at them, with a little jealously on her as it seemed that whenever Raven was near, Naomi seemed to relax and become happier...
Goro: - Sensei, do you think we made a mistake? -
Orion: - Huh? -
Everyone was surprised by his question...
Goro: - Do you actually think we have what it takes to become good Parasites? After today's session both in the morning and in the evening, I can't help but feel that... -
Orion: - You're feeling disappointed with yourselves, right? -
The silence that followed seemed to be the answer to his question...
Zero Two: - Just get to the point, are we weak enough that we won't survive the defense operation? -
Orion simply sighed and walked around before saying: - I will say that you won't with the level of skills you have right now... -
Everyone simply seemed to be resignated to their fate... until...
Orion: - But hey, cities weren't made in one day. You really think that something like this will stop you? -
Zero Two: - It seems to be, as you just said we're weak and the weak die. -
Orion: - That you just said is true... but what if it doesn't have to be that way? -
Zero Two: - What do you mean? -
Orion: - Let me ask you something... the strong survive and the weak die, that is a rule that has dictated the way of nature ever since life appeared in this big round piece of rock that we call planet... but I ask you, whom do you think is the strongest of them all? -
Zero Two: - Pfff, the one who dominates them all. -
Orion: - Wrong! It's EASY to dominate everyone weaker than you, you know you'll win. You know what is what really sets you as the strongest? -
Everyone, including Zero Two, was now intrigued...
Orion: - The strongest of them all are those who use their strength to protect and nurture the weak. Those who fight not because they hate the enemy in front of them, but because they love the people behind them. It's easy to kill and dominate but it is hard to protect and strengthen the weak to give them a fighting chance. Tell me, where does that put you in then? -
For once in her life, Zero Two was speechless and her beliefs were shaken. For a long time, she believed that the strong were only those who used and discarded the weak so that they could rise up on their own. At least that's what she was told and experienced. But here was living proof that was opposite to her beliefs and she couldn't argue with them: she saw first hand how powerful Arthur was with that belief and his squad followed him on that.
Mitsuru: - But what does that mean for us? -
Orion: - It means that if I and my squad are willing to invest our time training you, protecting you and help you become far greater than you can be, then you CAN also reflect that by being willing to stay determined and to learn everytime you fall, everytime you lose and everytime you fail. Failure is the key to success, so can I count on you to persevere for as long as we mentor you through this cruel times? -
All of the squad remained silent, reflecting about what Orion just told them before Hiro broke the silence...
Hiro: - Our sensei is right guys! I understand this feeling of uselessness and disappointment, I have been dealing with it for a long time before I met Zero Two. Naomi suffered it too because of me. And you know what? This is something I don't wish upon any of us, specially after all of what we have achieved so far! -
Mitsuru: - What exactly did we achieved? -
Naomi: - Is simple! We all managed to pilot together as we had wanted when we were in the Garden! Hiro did the impossible and rode with Zero Two three times and lived to tell it! Raven survived after disappearing and then succeeded on rescuing me and sharing his fate with me! We all manage to win against a Reaper and many other klaxosaurs! And even if we lose in this match, we almost managed to win! The plan almost worked! We got the basics to make it work again! We just need to add little details that may be able to make a difference! *Walks around the lobby as she says so before eventually stopping in front of Raven and turning towards everyone else* I don't know how and why, but all of our actions performed in the past has led us to here, together once more against many odds. I say that if we focus on out little successes for now, we can turn them into something big later... -
Raven: - She is right you know? The Restoration Front started with just a pack of isolated plantations... now we got 4 districts with 4 metropolis on them, and we're on the way of settling a 5th. All of them took little secure steps before going for the big risky leaps. And so far, all those leaps have been rewarded. If everyone can, we all can. -
Everyone smiled, as they soon realized that both of them were right. They had made so many things already, who's to say they can't do so again?
Ichigo: - As the leader of the squad, I say we all follow their example and keep trying our hardest, even if it becomes exhausting and painful sometimes. Anybody against it? Speak now! -
Nobody did, and it brought a smile to her: - Then you can count on us... is it okay if we call you sensei or captain? -
Orion: - Meh, both are acceptable. -
Ichigo: - Ok... count on us sensei! We won't be quitting any time soon! -
Orion: - Splendid! Because the routine we just performed today is gonna be repeated DAILY from today! -
Everyone's enthusiasm faded away as it was replaced with dread and Raven sweared that he saw some of squad 13's souls leaving their bodies...
Sally: - Don't worry kids. The mech matches will actually happen in an interlude of 3 days, only the physical, mental and teambonding exercises will be daily. After today however, I convinced Orion to spare you the physical routine tomorrow. -
Everyone breathed a little in relief...
Futoshi: - Well, at least we won't be having trouble breathing tomorrow. -
Orion: - I told you that the fat one would be happy about it... -
Sally: - Orion! -
Futoshi: - Is he gonna be calling me that forever? -
Raven: - At least until you wear it with pride or actually lose a few pounds. Although I have the feeling that you're actually big-boned or something. I have seen fat people at the districts and you don't have many of the symptons they have. You're literally a case of 'healthy fat' or whatever... -
Futoshi: - Oh, well that's comforting at least. -
Ichigo: - Before we start poking fun at our flaws, I have a question sensei... -
Orion: - Yes? -
Ichigo: - As the match started, Raven said something about 'Primal armor'. What exactly is that? -
Orion: - Well, that information is classified... BUT, we have been given permission from the admiral to talk about it so gather some notes because we have a feeling your Franxx will be upgraded soon... -
Meanwhile, in the Cerasus command room...
Dr. Franxx: - So this Primal Armor mainly works as a shield? -
F.O. Douglas: - Correct doctor, a shield that can easily deviate or absorb most energy or ballistic projectiles and can also be used to cushion the blunt attacks of might klaxosaurs. It self-regenerates on its own with time and without utilizing extra energy from the main frame. -
Both Admiral Dassia and First Officer Douglas had contacted the doctor to 'trade' some knowledge between the two sides after the match. The doctor found it suspicious but his opportunistic mind couldn't turn down the offer, specially now that he saw that this 'Primal armor' was one of the many key factors that separated the NEXTs from his Franxxs. He was also motivated a little by pride, since his masterpieces were defeated that easily and he was determined to turn that around.
Dr. Franxx: - Interesting, no wonder White Glint was able to shrug off that attack from that Moho back at the ceremony. This could have been something useful during the kissing operation. -
Dassia: - Primal armor, or PA, for short can also be given specialized aura effects according to the preferences of the pilots. -
Dr. Franxx: - Such as Arthur's electrical surge ability during the match? -
Dassia: - That's another thing doctor, but you're correct. If his PA had been active during the match, he would have released an aura of lightning around him. -
Dr. Franxx: "Probably the same aura when he blocked that Reaper's blade..." - That sounds useful, but there's one big detail that remains unanswered: why are you telling me this? -
After saying that, Dassia simply pulled out a canteen from her jacket, opened it and took a big sip before closing it. Douglas stayed by her side, both silent and composed. However, the doctor was aware that their expressions had become serious and grim.
Dassia: - I will go to the point, doctor. We are aware of what your true intentions are. We KNOW that you're trying to descipher some well-kept secrets the SMC would KILL to keep hidden. -
It was fortunate that the doctor was half-cyborg and most of his emotions were dampened because if not then he may have gotten a heart attack, his plan was discovered that easily! However, taking note of the words spoken, he reasoned there was something more...
Dr. Franxx: - I see... yet I'm still alive and talking to you here. Which means that you also want something from me. Am I right? -
Dassia: *grins* - Even after 60 years and replacing half of your body with cybernetics, you're still sharp as some... old colleagues of yours said you would be... -
Dr. Franxx: "Old colleagues? Whom could they be?" - Colleagues of mine? -
Dassia: - I will simply say that Papa nor you managed to win everyone on your side. Let's leave it like that. And yes, there are some secrets within APE that are struggling to take a glimpse at. Trying to do so using some... traditional methos would only cause unnecessary trouble that we would like to avoid. And considering that we are right now talking with APE's most prized scientist and the one responsible for the Franxx... -
Dr. Franxx: - I'm afraid that even I don't know some things that Papa prefers to keep for himself... but I'm willing to give some of mine preference in exchange for a fair prize. -
Dassia: - That's more than we wanted for now... however, you must know that sometimes we prefer favours over secrets and are willing to give some 'sources' to help you realize them... as long as they aren't leaked. -
Dr. Franxx: - I have certain degree of freedom here... what Papa doesn't know doesn't bother him. -
Dassia: - Good... so let's start bartering. Part of the training routine of Squad 13's new mentors involves letting them have basic knowledge and usage of two vital systems that the NEXTs of the SMC utilize: PA and 'Zandatsu mode'. -
Dr. Franxx: - Zandatsu mode? -
Dassia: - Something that will be explained later by the mentors. You got a first row for it after all. Anyways, because of it, captain Orion has discussed with us the idea of implementing the necessary modules to Squad 13's franxxs. -
Dr. Franxx: "Good, good! This could give me an opportunity to..."
Dassia: - Unfortunately, the fabrication and power source utilized for the production of the modules are a well kept secret of the SMC and sharing it is forbidden without exceptions... -
Dr. Franxx: "I knew it..."
Dassia: - However, we have been able to find a compromise and it involves you. -
Dr. Franxx: - What do you have planned? -
F.O. Douglas pulled out a white briefcase and set it on the table before opening it...
Dassia: - In this briefcase there's technical information about the design of the PA modules alongside a little extra that will get you started on your quest to unlock our secrets. Use it to design the PA and Zandatsu modules for all of Squad 13 franxxs. Once you have them, you can send them towards our production center in the Oletros. Take note that the modules have to be magma compatible because of the previously mentioned restrictions. So, do we have a deal? -
Dr. Franxx: "Hmmmm... as she said this could give me a good start in what could turn to be a very benefitial business relationship." - Deal, but in return can I ask you to give me some information about the PA modules you use? I will need some references to make mine. -
Dassia: - Sounds fair. It was a pleasure doing business with you doctor. If you excuse us, we will take our leave now. -
The admiral and F.O. soon left while the doctor opened the briefcase and pulled out the little extra they talked him about: it was a book.
Dr. Franxx: "Huh... they still use them?" *proceeds to read the title* "Kojima particles: the step above Magma"
Inside a klaxosaur cave in an unknown location...
In one of the many caves populated by the blue dinos, a squad of APE regulars were patrolling the area, checking carefully their surroundings with every step they made. Unfortunately for them, they weren't aware of a klaxosaur that was silently following them, its steps resonating with that of the intruders, showing that the creature had a level of intelligence that doesn't belong to that of a simple beast. It kept tracking them... everytime getting closer and closer using the cave to expertly hide in plain sight. Eventually, the squad stopped at an intersection where the cave split in two ways.
Leader: - Commander, we're at the intersection, which way leads to the nest? -
Commander: - Take the left, the nest should be just a few miles down. -
Leader: - Understood. Let's move squad 17! -
Klaxosaur: "Grave... mistake..."
It continued to shadow the squad's movements, waiting for the perfect moment...
Klaxosaur: "Must... protect... the pack..."
Eventually, they reached an opening towards a bigger cave...
Leader: - Commander, we're at the place but no sight of the eggs... awaiting orders... -
Commander: - Roger code... you shoul... we'r... *static noises* -
Leader: - Commander? Commander! Come in! -
Klaxosaur: "Moment... is... NOW!"
It then suddenly leaped against the leader and used its sharpened tail to pierce right through its chest...
Klaxosaur: "A clean... kill..."
Squad 17 Franxx: - The captain is down! From where did that klaxosaur came from!? -
Squad 17 Franxx: - Who cares?! Take it down! -
The remaining 4 franxx aimed their lances at the klaxosaur... however the one at the back lowered it as it looked above the blue killer...
Pistil Franxx: - Ummmm... guys? -
Squad 17: - What now code 467? Why are you breaking formation? Code 345, tell your partner... -
Stamen Franxx: - Above us! -
They all looked up to see a BIG amount of klaxosaurs similar to the one that just killed their leader climbing down the roof, ready to tear them apart...
Code 467: - We need to run! -
Klaxosaur: "Pack... hunt begins... NOW"
The klaxosaur then roared with a howl, and all that was heard was the sounds of roars and screaming on that cave...
