Doomguy ventures out into the commonwealth with Sonja and her pet Dogmeat. He saw the city at the distance, but being this close was a travesty. The sight of this place in ruins would remind him of the time when he came back home to Earth to find his hometown completely overrun by the nightmares of Hell itself. He had to cope with this a second time. He was also pissed off at what the people from that time did to this world, because he saved this world from the Demons and they reward themselves by destroying the planet themselves.
"You don't look happy." Sonja says to him, while still wearing the helmet
"These people shouldn't have died like this…" Doomguy replies
Sonja looks forward at the broken buildings and replies "At least it was quick, but these poor bastards can never rest."
"What?"
Sonja looks back to Doomguy and explains "The radiation is still here, but it sometimes comes and goes from the Glowing Sea, and the crazy zombies and mutants are still terrorising the commonwealth. Those are easy to kill sometimes, but the real dangers are the big ones." She draws out her handgun and starts walking forward towards the buildings
"Zombies…." Doomguy mutters and walks after Sonja and says "Do they know how to fire a gun?"
Sonja laughs and looks back to him "Of course not. I've never seen that before."
"I have."
"What the hell kind of world did you live in?"
The three of them are getting closer to whatever is left of Lexington where the city lies dead and overrun by all kinds of humans or creatures. As they got closer, Dogmeat came running back to her and starts barking, then looks straight ahead towards the city to hear gunfire and explosions happening in the distance. Sonja readies her weapon and moves much faster to catch the battle. Doomguy follows beside her and readies his handgun.
Doomguy was about to experience a new powerful enemy straight away in the commonwealth. At the front entrance to the city, they get to spectate a battle happening between a massive mutant behemoth and a group defending the interior of an old donut/coffee store, called Slocum's Joe. The explosions they heard before came from landmines that was put around the building, and now the monster begins tearing through the building with its large object in its hands. Doomguy was a little surprise to see something like this, as this behemoth towers over anyone, at around 13 feet (4 m).
"That monster…" Doomguy mutters when staring at the large behemoth destroying the building.
"That's one ugly motherfucker." Sonja replies and lowers her gun "They're not as strong as a Deathclaw, but can easily be avoided." She looks back to Doomguy to see him not quite surprise at seeing this monstrosity for the first time "You don't look much surprise."
"I've seen bigger things than that." Doomguy replies and remembers the first time he encounters something that was almost the same height as the behemoth. His first battle with the Barons of Hell was the first thing that came into his mind. He had to wipe out the Pinkies first before turning his attention towards the two of them and proceed to use whatever he had left to wipe them out.
"You're a strange man. You live in a strange world."
As soon as the behemoth was done destroying the building and killing whatever was inside, it turns its attention towards the two and lets off a roar towards them. Sonja sighs of annoyance and aims her gun towards the behemoth and wish the enemy inside the building would do more damage to the behemoth. This was Doomguy's time to face a powerful enemy with just a pistol. Both of them start firing their guns at the creature, then split apart from one another when the behemoth decides to throw its large pipe towards them. Doomguy continues firing his gun, while moving along the side and slowly getting closer towards it. The behemoth turns its attention towards him and starts getting closer towards him, while ignoring Sonja and her attempt of doing more damage by throwing a grenade at it. A nearby landmine that was on the road in front of the behemoth would help deliver more damage to the legs, but continues its slow approach towards Doomguy.
After wasting so much bullets against this behemoth, Doomguy chooses to resort to his fists and charges towards it. Sonja stops shooting and shouts out "What the fuck are you doing!?" then watches him face this creature one on one.
The behemoth swings both arms down at him the moment he was close enough, but Doomguy easily got out of the way, jumped on one of its arms to help boost him for another jump for an attempt of giving this behemoth a strong punch to the face. Despite not fighting the armies of Hell, Doomguy still had his incredible strength to still deliver enough damage towards a creature such as this. While the behemoth was dazing from the punch to the face, Doomguy lands back on the ground and tries for a second punch to one of the legs with much of its skin torn off by the explosions from the mines. He finally brought the behemoth down to its knee and finishes it off by using whatever bullets he had left in his pistol and starts shooting the hell out of it to the face until it finally dies.
Sonja and Dogmeat comes closer to the behemoth after it was over. Sonja would check the floor first to avoid any chances of any active landmines nearby. She puts her gun away and takes off her helmet to show him her surprise look on her face.
"You're not normal. Nobody has ever thought of fighting a behemoth with bare hands."
Doomguy looks back at the torn up face of the behemoth, then looks back towards her and replies "I was never normal to begin with."
"Hmmm, you've came from a Vault, right? What did you do before this?"
Doomguy turns his head away to look towards the broken building the behemoth was smashing into. He walks towards it and replies "I became a father."
Dogmeat scouts ahead into whatever is left of the building, and Doomguy walks straight inside to find the bodies lying around. However, he was surprise to find the bodies are not human, but humanoid robots. The sight of one of them made him remember what happen in the Vault when he encounters a tall robot standing over the others and looking straight at him.
"They're Synths." Sonja replies when kicking one of them to the side to have it roll over to see the front of its body.
Doomguy looks back to her "Synths?"
"You could say they're the boogiemen of the commonwealth. They work for the Institute." Sonja replies while putting her helmet on a nearby table and crouching down to pick up an intact laser rifle. "Everyone is afraid of them. They say they kidnap people and replace them as these things, except more human looking."
Doomguy looks back down at the dead Synth in front of him and mutters "It was them…."
"What?"
Doomguy turns towards her and asks "Where do I find them?"
Sonja stands up and scoffs after hearing that "It's not that easy. If it was easy then they would've been wiped out by now. The Institute is one of many powerful factions in the commonwealth, but I believe they're not even close compare to the others."
After she was done scavenging the ammo off the bodies and from the broken turrets, Sonja puts on her helmet and returns outside to find Dogmeat approaching her. When she was done patting her, she looks back to Doomguy and tosses him the laser rifle.
"That is your reward for killing that behemoth for me. Now we can go on ahead."
The journey the two take would lead them towards the Corvega Assembly Plant. They had to kill a couple of mutants along the way, but they arrive at the front entrance to find three people standing guard and an automatic turret on a higher position protecting the second door above the other. Sonja was ready to go in there, but she moves in quietly on the right side and calls Doomguy to do the same thing.
"That's my target." Sonja replies "That place is full of raiders. These people take whatever they want and kill whoever they want. I can take care of them by myself, but I'd be appreciated if you tag along with me."
Doomguy stands beside her and looks back towards the entrance with the raiders. He looks to her and replies "This isn't my fight."
"These bastards have already killed people and stole supplies from a small settlement. If they killed something so precious to you, wouldn't you get revenge?"
Doomguy was unable to respond to that because he knows a thing or two about revenge. He completely understands the situation and decides to get out of cover and approach the raiders with his laser rifle at the ready. Sonja joins in and draws first blood by throwing her grenade towards the raiders standing by the front door. Unable to get out in time, both raiders lost their legs by the explosion, and the second raider took three shots to the chest by Sonja's handful before he had a chance to fire his pipe rifle. Doomguy targets the turret with perfect shots and easily destroys the turret.
The front entrance was clear, so the three decide to go separate ways inside the building. Sonja takes Dogmeat with her to go on the upper level, while Doomguy goes straight into the bottom room and proceeds to move in with just a pistol at the ready. It has been a while since Doomguy did this, so entering the room with just his pistol straight away was making him remember the past when clearing every level of Demons. He made sure to check every room and fire his weapon the moment he spots anyone in front of him. The fight begins inside, and Doomguy was speeding things up much quicker than Sonja. Doomguy was a man of focus.
It did not take long for the raiders to find out the compound was under attack. They hear the gunshots coming from Doomguy, so many of them quickly arm themselves to deal with the intruder. Sonja decides to stay hidden to draw their attention towards Doomguy, then comes out on a perfect time and surprises a small group of when they try going up the stairs. She shot them all dead with ease, then moves down and continues gunning everyone down with precision shots from her handgun.
Back to Doomguy, he continues with his pistol until he ran out of ammo, then uses whatever rounds he had left in the laser rifle. He would try to steal some ammo off the dead people, but before he could reload his pistol, he decides to resort to his fists, and he did not hold back any of his punches. One raider attempt to fight him hand to hand combat with just spike knuckles, and Doomguy responds by easily avoiding the punches and manage to dislocate the arm and knocks the raider out with a good punch across the face. Another raider came in and Doomguy grabs his arm and throws him over his body to slam him hard on the floor, then finishes him off with one bullet through the face. One more person came in through the room from one of the doors with a double barrel shotgun, blasted Doomguy to the chest and knocks him back a little. Doomguy looks back at him with anger and runs straight at him to grab him by the neck with his right hand. He chokes the life out of the man until he finally rips his head right off his body.
Before moving on ahead, Doomguy stops for a moment and turns back around to look back at the dead raider to look at the weapon he was carrying. He did not realise it until now, a double barrel shotgun. He takes the gun off his body, reloads the gun and says to himself "Groovy."
He walks over the dead and continues using his double barrel wipe out the rest. He would not find Sonja anywhere, so he manage to return outside through a different door and waits for her to reappear. Sonja knew exactly where she was going, since this was not the first time she came through here. She knew where the boss was, so she found the target in the office room in the corner of the assembly line. She shot the lights to get them off her face, then targets the turret above the room and tries making her way towards the room, while avoiding the incoming fire from the boss and another raider. Dogmeat was helping her distract them to stop them from shooting Sonja, which gave her the time to move forward and fire her gun to stop them from shooting Dogmeat.
It would take a few more minutes until Sonja leaves the plant and comes outside through the back door. She was suddenly startle by the sudden scream of a raider falling off the building and falling face first into the thick floor in front of her. She looks up to find Doomguy standing above her and still carrying the double barrel in his hands.
"You asshole…" Sonja sighs and walks forward. "Since you're still alive, I guess you killed the rest of them, right?"
Doomguy jumps down off the high point and lands behind her. He responds "Yeah." Then reloads his double barrel
Sonja looks back at him and examines his body to see not a single scratch on his body anywhere, except for a few bullet marks on his armour. She asks him "You've done this before, haven't you?"
"It's been a long time since I last killed someone." Doomguy replies "I'll be alright."
"If you say so." Sonja looks forward and moves up ahead to the rusty fences to see the view of the valley from where they are. She saw the sun slowly going down and starts to concern about what is about to happen when night arrives. She looks back to Doomguy and asks "You still going to Diamond City?"
"Yes."
Sonja takes off her helmet and replies "There's going to be a lot of monsters out there. They normally show up when night arrives."
"You saw what I did to that giant before." Doomguy stands beside her and asks "What's worse than that behemoth?"
"There's much stronger monsters out there than just that behemoth. But you don't care about that, do you?"
"No matter what gets in front of me, I'm going to kill it."
"Hmm, I believe you. Let's go then." Sonja puts her helmet back on and moves on ahead with Dogmeat following her.
And so the three leaves the dead behind and ventures together through the dead city. At first they found no signs of any mutants, but it was beginning to get darker and would surely meet a lot of them when they reach the nearby buildings. While they walk through the dark, Doomguy was busy checking the Pip Boy and found out he can turn the light on. The whole screen glows bright in green and gives them light to move on ahead. Doomguy also starts checking to see what else he could do to the Pip Boy and found out he can listen to the radio or any communication device around the area. One particular one is a distress signal, but they are too far away to hear what it was saying to them. After a minute of walking, Doomguy hears a full message from someone nearby.
"This is Scribe Haylen of Reconnaissance Squad Gladius to any unit in transmission range. Authorization Arx. Ferrum. Nine. Five. Our unit has sustained casualties and we're running low on supplies. We're requesting support or evac from our position at Cambridge Police Station."
"Cambridge Police Station… That's nearby." Doomguy lowers his arm and looks up ahead.
The message continues, until Scribe Haylen stops and turns her attention towards the doorway to see one of them coming in with a sick soldier in his arms. As soon as he put him down, he quickly reloads his laser rifle and returns back outside to continue the fight against the feral mutants. The fight was seriously tense, as more feral mutants continues rushing through their defences, and more would arrive when they hear the sound of gunshots coming from a 20mm submachinegun. Two men were standing on the barricades and shooting down at the incoming mutants, but with so many coming through the two entranceways, they came running up through the stairway and tackle them to the floor. The men had protection padding across their body, but the mutants continue ripping them apart until they finally start tearing the flesh off their bodies.
One man was left to stand alone against the mutants. Paladin Danse, wearing his power armour, continued firing his weapon, while watching his fellow comrades fall against the mutants and unable to save them. He remain standing in front of the door to the police station, soon to use his fists to knock back the mutants when he could no longer had time to reload his weapon.
Doomguy and Sonja would eventually enter the scene, after they are done fighting against nearby mutants. The moment Doomguy fires the double barrel at one of the charging mutants, other nearby mutants heard the loud noise and chose to come out and attack them. Sonja shot one through the head when seeing it crawling from under a truck, then looks to her right and shoots two more coming out of a broken building. Doomguy continues firing both shells from his double barrel and reloads quick enough to kill the others. One was unfortunate enough to get close, but he hits it across the face with the back end of his gun, then finishes it off by drawing his handgun with his left hand and kills it through a headshot.
The three arrive at the front of the police station to find Paladin Danse fighting for his life against so many mutants. They were unable to tackle him to the floor, so they continue to claw their way through his thick metal armour to reach his flesh, but they could do nothing buy scratch the armour. Doomguy and Sonja enters together, and both aim their guns towards the mutants and continues shooting them all until none are left standing. When it was finally over, Danse can finally sighs in relief to see the battle finally over. Now he turns his attention to the newcomers.
"I appreciate the assistance, civilians. But what's your business here?"
"I heard your distress signal and came to help." Doomguy responds
"You two look well-armed. Are you from a local settlement or are you part of a group?"
"He's from a Vault." Sonja intervenes "And I'm giving him the tour."
"What? He's a Vault Dweller?" Danse asks with surprise as this was the first time he has ever encounter someone from a Vault. He continues "Most people wouldn't admit to such a thing. I appreciate your honesty. If I appear suspicious, it's because our mission here has been difficult. The moment we arrived in the Commonwealth, we've been constantly under fire."
Sonja scoffs and takes off her helmet "What do you expect? Everything out here wants to kill you."
"And just where do you come from?" Danse asks her
"From a settlement, and that's all you need to know."
"Hmmm, well, if you want to continue pitching in, we could use an extra gun on our side."
"I can't do that. I need to get to Diamond City."
"I understand, you have business there that needs to be taken care of. I'm Paladin Danse, Brotherhood of Steel."
"Should've known you boys would've eventually showed up here. What's the game this time?" Sonja asks
"There is no 'game'." Danse replies "Our duty here doesn't concern you, civilian."
"Of course."
"Who are you people?" Doomguy asks
"Our order seeks to understand the nature of technology. It's power. It's meaning to us as humans. And we fight to secure that power from those who would abuse it."
"Just like everyone else in this world. You guys are trying to keep your status as the authority." Sonja replies
"If you think we do this to benefit ourselves. I can assure you, our motivations is quite the opposite." Danse replies with serious and dislike towards Sonja
"I'm well aware of you guys, you're a military force that works alongside the ARC and the UAC."
". . . . ." Doomguy raise both his eyebrows for a moment and looks back to Sonja the moment he heard the last word she said "What did you just say?"
"They're part of an alliance with the ARC and UAC. Armoured Response Coalition and Union Aerospace Corporations."
"We are well aware of their existence, and the technology they wield." Danse replies "We have agreed to a terms of truce between both sides to avoid a serious war that would lead to the deaths of thousands."
"Those sons of bitches…." Doomguy mutters and turns away from the two. He takes a few steps away from them and rubs his face across his face when muttering "How did they survive…?"
"You alright there?" Sonja asks
"Look, as much as I want to continue this argument, I have somewhere else I have to be right now. Since you won't help us, your business here is done." Danse turns away and walks back inside the building to check on the last two members of his team.
Sonja sighs and walks up to Doomguy from behind and taps his shoulder "What's wrong with you?"
"The UAC… What do you know of them?"
"That is… Private. How do you know about them? You just woke up from a Vault."
Doomguy looks forward and replies "They were disbanded before the war. They shouldn't be here."
"You're… Joking, right? The war happened 200 years ago, so there's no way the UAC was around during your time."
"They shouldn't even be here. And if they're here, then…." Doomguy pauses for a moment and thought back at all the nightmares the UAC brought into this world. He mutters "It's going to happen again…."
"What?"
Doomguy looks back to her "It's nothing." He then turns away again and starts walking out of here "Let's go."
"Hmmm, looks like I'm not the only one keeping secrets." Sonja shrugs and decides to follow him with Dogmeat following beside her.
