"So, you are able to talk to people though that," Artemis asked, pointing at Ruby's thin brick (which was called a phone) in her hand. "And they reply instantly?"
"Yep," Ruby said, holding out the phone for her to see. "And you can even send texts-
"Texts?"
"Like letters, except" Ruby said, tapping a few keys on the phone, which was now displaying letters. "I can send as many as I want and they receive them instantly." Ruby said, pressing Send.
Across the dinar, Granny's phone buzzed. "Wow." Artemis gasped, smiling as Granny read the message. "That's incredible."
"I know right!" Ruby giggled back, handing to phone to her. "Here, you give it a go." she said, walking off to help Granny.
The phone felt unnaturally light, and the screen far to smooth as she gently tapped the letters just as Ruby had done. Pressing the send button, Granny's phone buzzed again. The woman in question picking it up, letting out a short laugh before continuing on her work.
'Peter would love it.' Artemis thought to herself, smiling sadly at the phone. It had been years, but it still felt like yesterday. Still hurt like it too.
She missed her friend.
She missed the boys.
She missed Peter Pan.
She could almost laugh at the irony, she hated him not so long ago. And here she was feeling sad because a thin brick that could send messages to people instantly would be something that Peter would love.
All the trouble he could cause.
All the mischief.
Artemis sighed, glancing up at the ceiling. It was a new world. So much to do, to explore.
"I wish you could see it, Peter. Oh, I wish you could see this."
"What can I do for you?" Mr Gold asked, setting down the tea pot, when Emma, Mary-Margret and David burst into his store.
"What you can do, is tell us what you did." Emma said instantly leaning forwards against the counter at him.
"I'm sorry. You're going to have to be more specific."
"You know damn well what we're talking about." David snapped, glowering at the man. "You double-crossed Emma, you, uh, took your…potion, from her." Snow listed.
"And did who knows what to this town."
"And, worst of all, you risked Henry's life."
"And Artemis's." David added, folding his arms. Leaving his sister with strangers had been torture enough, leaving her in the hands of Rumplestiltskin, even when he didn't have a choice was even worst.
"Well, that is quite a litany of grievances now, isn't it?" Gold said, glancing at the Prince. He wasn't too fond of him either and considering Artemis was not in his store she was most likely back in the hands of her brother.
"Maybe I don't need answers. Maybe, I just need to punch you in the face." Emma growled.
"Oh," Gold laughed softly. "Really, dearie? Allow me to answer your questions with some of my own, alright? he said walking over to Emma. "Did your dear boy Henry survive?"
"Yeah."
"Is the curse broken? And let's see. Uh, Miss Swan. How long have you been searching for your parents? Looks like you're reunited. Seems like, rather a punch in the face, I deserve a thank you." Mr Gold said lightly.
"Twist my words all you want. What was the purple haze that you brought?" Emma asked.
Gold shrugged. "You know…Magic."
"Why?" Mary-Margret asked.
"Not telling." Gold said, smiling just as a loud explosion rocked the building. Regaining her balance, Emma glanced at the shop door, the sounds of car alarms yelling from outside.
"What the hell was that?"
"That… Is my gift to you. That… Is going to take care of Regina."
"So, how do you know Mary-Margret and David?" Henry asked, spooning some peas into his mouth. Night had just fallen, the odd glows of the streetlamps outside and the lights of the dinar still surprising her.
Usually she would be making a fire. Or lighting the candles. There was no such thing in this world. They just flicked a switch and the lights came on.
Snow, David and Emma were yet to return, but she didn't mind. She quite enjoyed Henry's company.
"Well, David's my brother, but I had to leave my family when I was little. I travelled a lot, stole a lot and…well, one day I met Snow. I helped her escape from the Queen's guards, stayed with her for a little while, met Red. Then…well…I-That's really it I guess." Artemis said, she was lying though the teeth, but there was no way she was telling Henry about Peter, or Neverland or Regina or Rumple.
He was young and Regina was his mother.
Despite all her crazy, she wouldn't not wreck that relationship.
"You're her! I can't believe it!" Henry cried, grinning widely as he rummaged through his back. "What?" Artemis asked, leaning forward as Henry pulled out his story book.
"You're Princess Artemis!" he said, sliding his book across the table, opening it to a page. Artemis pulled the book towards her.
Sure enough, there she was; she blonde hair, grey eyes and bow and arrows all drawn in; with incredible detail. "Apprentice to Rumpelstiltskin, Robin Hood's right hand, Cursed-"
"Yeah...that's me." Artemis said, quietly giving Henry, a light 'jazz hands.'
"You're so cool. With your bow and-" Henry said, mimicking a bow being drawn and an arrow releasing. Artemis chuckled. "Thanks," she mumbled shyly, she knew he meant well, but she still felt a little uncomfortable.
She ran to escape her titles, and here; he knew her by them.
"I'll tell you something though," she said bending down, lowering her voice to a whisper. "You are so much cooler, than you think you are. Always remember that. Aunt Advice." she said drawing back, smiling.
"What? Oh…" Henry said, seeming to remember. "Oh. You're my aunt." he said, staring at her wide-eyed. His brain seeming to be imploding.
"Yep." Artemis said, giggling. They were just about six years apart. It was hilarious.
A loud rumbled shook the building, as a bang sounded out from the street.
Artemis shut her eyes, gripping the table hard. A cold feeling of dread and pain entering her system. "No…"
"Everyone okay?" Granny asked, Ruby helping up a woman who fell down.
"What was that? Artemis?" Henry asked, turning to her. She was clenching her fists, one hand holding the table do tightly it made her knuckles turn white. She looked shocked.
"Artemis! What's wrong?" Henry asked, her look of fear making his squirm. Artemis blinked, getting up walking to the doors. "There is dark magic here." she mumbled, staring out into the night.
Her eyes landing on Mr Gold's Pawnshop.
"And I know, exactly who brought it."
"Rumple, you nasty ass imp!" Artemis shouted, throwing the door to the store open. "What the bloody hell were you thinking bringing something like that here!?"
The second she felt its presence, she had marched over (ignoring all the calls from Ruby, Granny and Henry) and was now currently yelling at him.
Not much has changed.
"Artemis," he said, appearing out of the room in the back. Walking stick in hand. He different than what she was accustom too. She was used to him being greasy-haired, his skin scaly and his eyes big and beady.
Not that she didn't like him this way. He still looked like Rumple.
"A pleasure as always. It's been some time." Rumple said gently, a smile on his lips. Artemis sighed, taking a deep breath. "It has." she said, walking deeper into the shop. "Nice place."
"It is isn't it?" Rumple agreed, giving it a look over. "There is much better things in the back though." he mused.
"You saved me. And you brought me along." Artemis said, a smile creeping on. "So sentimental. I thought Rumpelstiltskin didn't get attached."
"Ah, well. I need someone to do my dirty work."
"So you admit I do your dirty work!" Artemis snapped, stopping in front of him, in the middle of the shop.
"I was talking about my dusting." Rumple said lightly.
Artemis smiled.
Rumple grinning too.
"I missed you, you crazy old man." Artemis said, wrapping her arms around him. "You too, you evil brat." Rumple said, hugging her back.
Releasing him, Artemis smiled, before whacking him on the arm. "A Wraith! What were you thinking? Bringing dark magic like that here. What's it for?"
"Regina."
"So you made a promise to Belle; the woman you love, who you thought was dead, to not kill Regina. But you decide to kill Regina, just will an evil ancient entity so your hands would be clean. Because Regina imprisoned Belle for a good couple years. And now the Wraith is hunting Regina. Endangering everyone and to top it all off, Belle found out and hates your guts. That it?" Artemis said dryly.
"Pretty much." Rumple said, sitting down on one of his cushioned chairs, in the back room.
Artemis groaned, throwing her head back. "What is wrong with you people?! Jeez! Did everything just go to hell when I was in there? I mean…What the hell were you thinking? What the hell was everyone thinking? Seriously." she said, looking back at him arms folded.
"What now? Can we stop it?"
"There's no stopping a Wraith, unless you destroy it."
"How do you do that?" Artemis asked, knowing that she probably would have to owe him later. Some things didn't change with Rumple, even just talking he probably would ask for a favour.
"It's a creature of infinitely darkness, you could only destroy it-
"With a powerful light." Artemis finished sighing. "God, Sometimes I really hate magic. Where the hell I am going to get-"
Another explosion rang out, as bright sparks flew from another lamppost, haunted screams echoing out. Artemis flew out of the room, her fingers closing around the doorknob.
"Artemis, no!" Rumple said sternly, limping from behind her. "It's not your fight."
Artemis shut her eyes. "It's not your fight, Artie!" Pan shouted, gripping her arm. He was worried, she could see it. Deep in his eyes, he'd never admit it, but she didn't care. She wouldn't either.
"Yes it is."
"Yes, it is." Artemis said, yanking the door open, running out into the street following the direction of the noise. It was always her fight.
And she would always win. Even when winning wasn't fun.
Finally tracking the Wraith to a building, Artemis found herself standing, in front of the 'Town Hall'. Running through the halls, trying to follow the noises, only now a deadly silence had fallen throughout the building.
"David! Snow! Emma!" she called out.
Nothing.
"Damn it." Artemis mumbled, taking a deep breath. She had a bit of a love/hate relationship with magic. Rumple said her main problem was she couldn't focus. She had then told him he was an ugly lizard and magically slammed the door in his face to show her point.
But that wasn't important now.
Opening her eyes, Artemis ran down the corridor, pushing open the door.
"You're nothing but the son of a shepherd." Regina hissed, holding David in the air, as vines magically wrapped around him. Choking him.
They didn't seem to notice her. Good. Artemis smirked. She would be lying to say she didn't love making a fool out of Regina.
"I should've killed you when I could. And now…Now I can-Ah!" Regina cried, falling to the floor.
"Not today, you're Assjesty." Artemis said coolly, hand out easily able to thrown Regina down. Regina growled, clenching her fists about to get up.
"I wouldn't." Artemis said curtly. "You and I both know, I'll win. And don't feel like throwing you into a wall with your son here."
"What?" Regina whispered, turning around, staring at the door; where Red and Henry had just entered. "Henry, what are you doing here?"
"What are you doing?" Henry snapped back, looking between her and Artemis, turning around, waving her hand over David. The vines disappearing instantly, making him fall to the ground.
"It's okay. You're safe now." Regina said, walking over to her son. Artemis helping David. "Are you okay?" she whispered to him. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." he grunted, Red pulling him to his feet.
"W-Where's my mom and where's-"
"They're gone. They fell through a portal. They're… Henry, I'm sorry."
"No, you're not." Henry said, making Artemis look up. She knew that face. "You really are the Evil Queen. I don't want to see you again."
"No, don't say that. I love you."
It all started with that face.
"Then, prove it. Get Emma and Mary Margaret back. And until then, leave me – leave everyone – alone."
She protected that face. "Henry." Artemis whispered, her heart aching as if she were in some sort of physical pain. "It's you."
"But where will you go?" Regina asked, her voice thick him emotion. It was unusual for Artemis to see her so…sad. It broke her heart.
"With me." David said, his voice croaking, as he walked past placing a gentle hand on Henry shoulder. Artemis and Red following behind him, David edging in the middle, one hand on Henry the other on her, (with Red behind them) as they left the Town Hall.
And the Evil Queen.
Alone in it.
"Welcome home." David said lightly, opening the door to what he called an apartment. It was basically a really nice cottage. Walking in, Henry setting down his backpack, bending down staring at a picture of Emma and Snow.
"Henry?"
"Yeah?"
"Don't worry. Emma and Mary Margaret – they're alive." David said, Artemis looking around, trying not to intrude on the conversation.
"How do you know?"
"I have faith."
Artemis turned, gazing out of the window, the moon was high shining bright and strong in the night sky. But that wasn't what she was looking for.
"But…"
"Henry. Come here. I will find them. I will always find them."
"Told you a thousand times, David." Artemis said, her eyes lingering on the Second Star to the Right. "It's cute, but sometimes, that sounds super creepy."
