Star Trek TNG: The Next Gamer

Episode 1.3: WTF is Cetacean Ops?

Ever wonder what was on deck thirteen? Tyson hadn't. According to the wall console, the only area of note was shuttle bays in the aft section. The forward section is mostly quarters and hub areas for atypical species; species that come from environments beyond human living standards. One hidden gem on deck thirteen is Cetacean Ops. It's an operation and navigation area staffed by cetaceans, commonly recognized during Tyson's time as whales and dolphins. The man from the past had no idea what dolphins and whales would do on a starship. It was simply the first thing he could think of to distract Troi, so he just went with it.

Cetacean Ops reminded him of a tour of the aquarium he'd had in grade school. Not the floor level you see with general admission. The maintenance level that workers and staff see, but fast forward that to a futuristic setting. Wall paneling, displays, and floors for humanoid staff surrounded pools built into the ground. These pools, lined with control panels, vary in size to accommodate either multiple Cetaceans or Cetaceans of different sizes. The floors separating each pool are standard-sized, allowing two humanoids to walk concurrently, but most of the area is dedicated to the pools.

In the water closest to the door are two dolphins wearing suits that vaguely resemble a wetsuit version of the Starfleet uniform. Not wanting to treat them any differently than he would a human officer, Tyson greets them as he enters and surveys the room. "Hey, what's up? I'm Tyson, how are things going down here?" trying to be as neutral as possible in his greeting.

They both respond with a whistle, followed by a few clicks, and other whistles interspersed.

Language Skill Unlocked!
Cetacean (level 0) - The universal language shared by Cetaceans from earth and species that communicate through pulses, whistles, and clicks. At the lowest level, you recognize the language but have zero ability to speak, write, or read.

Sensing Tyson's bewilderment, Troi took over as mediator. "They returned your greeting and welcomed us to their department."

Troi continued," Hello. Tyson, this is Luna and Akai. They're in the science division, focusing on navigation and stellar cartography respectively."

For the next few minutes, a back-and-forth commenced with the dolphin pair explaining what they do and demonstrating how they perform those duties, with Troi translating so Tyson could follow along.

Language Skill Increased!
Cetacean (level 1) - The universal language shared by Cetaceans from earth and species that communicate through pulses, whistles, and clicks. At this language proficiency level, a person can form basic sentences, including asking and answering simple questions. This level reflects someone who is just beginning to study a language.

When the demonstration reached a lull, Tyson tried to ask a question using his Cetacean language skill. "Can you leave here?"

As the words left his mouth, the sounds came out in clicks and whistles similar to the dolphin crew. He intended to be more tactful in the way he asked but was unable to, a limitation of his low skill level. All the Federation officers were stunned. Troi knew Tyson did not have a universal translator, but she understood what he had asked. It made no sense for him to understand the dolphins. Initially, it took a combination of universal translators and Vulcan telepathy to decipher the Cetacean language.

After a moment the dolphins started squealing. Tyson recognized he was being laughed at.

"Never heard a dry-boy try to talk like us." whistled Akai. Luna quickly swam over and slapped him with a flipper. Tyson hadn't picked it up because his language skill was too low, but 'dry-boy' was a slur for non-cetaceans.

Akai replied to the man's question," We can go anywhere on the ship. There are suits we can wear and antigrav chairs we can use to get around. It's such a hassle most of us just stay here. It's about as difficult for us to get around most of the ship, as it would be for you to get around down here."

Tyson, for the first time, hesitated before accepting a quest. This one had a failure penalty. Death. Tyson accepted the quest after a moment. He assumed the death penalty came from the chance of drowning while using the Cetacean equipment. He knew how to swim and was confident he wouldn't drown.

"Well, let's see how this goes," stated Tyson in Cetacean. He stripped down to his boxers, folding his clothes and placing them on the floor. As an afterthought, he spent his unused attribute point on Charisma. Tyson remembered what he said to Counselor Troi in the corridor outside the holodeck. Looking toward Deanna, he asked if she wanted to join him.

Tyson immediately recognized his mistake. He could see Troi's face shifting. He silently wished to himself he could take that back. The world turned gray and he could see the expression on her face change as the world rewound to the moment right after he spoke to her.

Social Check: Success.

Tyson hoped he wouldn't regret using his luck that way. He could have used Luck to prevent a killing blow or for a skill check that may have prevented the ship from blowing up. Nope. He used it to keep Deanna Troi from getting mad at him.

Tyson dives into the pool, trying to look cool

Athletics Check: Major Success.
Athletics skill has increased! 1 - 2

Diving in was slightly challenging because the pool was only 12 feet wide and he had to clear the 2 dolphins. He leaped high and with a steep arc, diving in with a little splash. His movement was smooth enough that the system deemed it worthy of a skill increase.

Tyson broke the surface and smiled over at Troi. She returned his smile and said," Well as you said, I do owe you for cheating during the spar."

Surprisingly, she began to mimic his actions. Instead of going somewhere to change her outfit, she began removing the purple uniform. She pulled her arms up through the v-cut at the neckline, one at a time. As she lowered the uniform below her navel, Tyson couldn't help his eyes drifting upward. The wide v-cut of the uniform didn't allow her to wear a bra with straps, without them being visible. Being a man, Tyson didn't consider this until he laid eyes upon her strapless black bra. The second surprise in store for him was that it was lacy and cute. As she peeled the remainder of her uniform down her legs, Tyson noticed her panties. They were matching black lace, in a boy-shorts cut which accented her wide hips nicely. His look trailed upwards tracing her hourglass shape created by the tapering of her waist. She folded her uniform and placed it on the ground next to his, bending over as she did so. Tyson couldn't help but notice the cut of her boyshorts; the shape allowed the bottom of her cheeks to peek just below the hem. He appreciated the crease where her ass and legs met. Troi turned to look at him and almost laughed when she saw him biting the pointer finger of his left hand as he mindlessly treads water.

She didn't need to catch him looking. She sensed his feelings the entire time and knew the effect she was having. Just for fun and the put the nail in the coffin, while looking back at him, she winked seductively. Tyson froze, his head dunking under the surface as he stopped treading water.

Tyson resurfaced in time to watch Deanna untie her hair from the high bun she'd set before the fighting class earlier. She proceeded to take three steps back from the edge. One bounding step forward before jumping into the water feet-first. Tyson again couldn't help his eyes being drawn to her chest. The strapless bra struggled to contain her assets. The splash from Troi hitting the water washed away a small trickle of blood from Tyson's nose.

When I imagined being Isekai'd into Star Trek, I thought it would be as a badass augment, but I turned out to be a lame-ass shonen protagonist, Tyson mused.

Deanna broke the surface of the water. Her curly hair spread out in a fan behind her as she blinked a few drops from her eyelashes. They treaded water a few feet apart, making eye contact. Nothing was said until the moment was interrupted by a few clicks and pulses.

"You gonna show us what you've got? Or stare at each other all day?" mocked Akai.

Lacking a good comeback, Tyson focused on the task ahead. He'd have to swim down to the screen to access the navigation interface. Once accessed, he'd have to locate Earth's position relative to the Enterprise's current location. Then using that location, plot a course using the navigation commands. Tyson nodded, took a breath, and dove. The interface was eight feet down, it reminded him of trying to touch the bottom of a backyard swimming pool.

With a few strokes, Tyson easily made it to the navigation screen and had no difficulty maintaining his position in the water.

Physical Science Check: Major Failure.

Tyson couldn't decipher the navigational star chart. He was forced to resurface and try again.

Physical Science: Critical Failure.

Tyson swam down to the interface again. This time when he tried to access it, he somehow managed to break the screen. It ceased functioning and once again he ascended. Now that the screen was broken, he'd have to dive even further, increasing the swim difficulty, to reach the next accessible interface.

This time he had some difficulty reaching the deeper screen. However, he flew through the navigational star chart and located Earth almost immediately, leaving him extra time to plot the course.

Computers Check: Major Failure.

His first attempt was wasted, unable to program the proper coordinates nor set the course. Luckily, he finished the navigation quickly enough that he had enough time to try again before having to resurface.

At some point while Tyson was inputting coordinates, Luna swam down to watch his progress, she respected the human for trying to see what life was like for them. Very few crewmen ever visited Cetacean Ops, let alone treat them as anything more than a novelty. She was a little nervous when he broke the panel, increasing the difficulty of his self-assigned task, but exclaimed aloud when he succeeded, "That was impressive. Way to stick with it. You're the first man I've ever seen work these panels."

Without thinking, he replied in Cetacean," Thanks."

However, being human requires one inhale to make the click sound. Tyson was underwater. When he inhaled a small amount of water got inside and he started choking. He swam to the surface without assistance but had a coughing fit once he could breathe again. He held a thumb up to Troi letting her know he was fine, as he tried to expel the water from his lungs.

Bonus Rewards:
Perk: Universal Translator: This perk allows you to understand any language. After hearing just a few phrases, you gain elementary proficiency in that language (level 1). You gain limited working proficiency after trying to speak it for the first time (level 2). You reach working proficiency (level 3) after an hour of speaking, fluency (level 4) after three hours of speaking, and can be considered a native speaker with an appropriate regional accent (level 5) after only a single day spent speaking the language.

Earning the perk was worth gagging in front of Counselor Troi over. Going forward he shouldn't have any trouble communicating with the non-human crew. Thinking ahead with his foreknowledge, if he was around for certain missions in the future, this could make a major difference, the Tamarians coming to mind.

The current dilemma - neither Tyson nor Troi had towels. The solution - they used environmental controls to increase the air temperature to eighty degrees, with the dolphin's consent. The humans were lying on the floor propped on their elbows continuing to chat while they dried off. The conversation was comfortable, the earlier tension destroyed by Tyson's goofy coughing fit. He still made glances at Troi's body but maintained eye contact for acceptably long periods. Tyson considered that a win worthy of an increase in Social skill, but the system seemed to disagree. Troi sensed his interest and accepted it as flattering, but didn't comment and maintained the flow of the discussion. While he didn't gain any Social skills, Tyson did noticeably improve in his Cetacean language.

Cetacean Language Skill Increased! 2-3

Deanna and Tyson got dressed. They all chatted for an hour before Troi realized there was a replicator in Cetacean Ops and they spun up a pair of towels. While covered, they just recycled and recreated dry clothing. Tyson may or may not have known about the replicator beforehand. Deanna's empathic senses revealed the truth.

Checking the time, Troi decided they could still visit the shuttle bay before their scheduled meeting. They ignored auxiliary shuttle bays on deck thirteen and instead headed up to deck four to see the main shuttle bay.

Getting eyes on the main shuttle bay added more surprise to Tyson's tour. It was massive. Unbelievably, unnecessarily huge. Tyson thought the main shuttle bay was on deck four. It was deck four, three, and two. The entire aft section of the saucer was the main shuttle bay. He had expected half a dozen, maybe a dozen shuttles. There were easily two dozen shuttles scattered around the bay, and room for double that, minimum.

At this point, several stops in, Tyson had an idea of how this 'Tutorial' worked. He would meet a staff member, maybe learn a skill, or increase his reputation. He wondered if the shuttle bay was the best place for him to finish his tour. Was there a better place Troi could take him? What important skills was he missing?

The main areas he hadn't seen that he remembered from the show were the holodeck, 10-forward, and science labs. He didn't even consider the nursery.

His biggest shortcoming was a lack of offensive skills. He hoped for a weapon skill, preferably Ranged Weapons or Energy Weapons. Even with the reputation progress he'd made today, he doubted anyone would be willing to give him a phaser. Likewise, trying to steal one would set him back, better to build trust now.

Turning to Troi, Tyson asks, "Is there a lounge, bar, or restaurant we can visit before the meeting, or a mall for shopping? The shuttle bay is neat, but if our time is almost done I'd rather spend it somewhere else, with you.

Troi cheekily replied, "Cetacean Ops is the closest to a beach you'll find on the ship, now you're trying to get that drink?"

"Eh, What can I say? I'm trying to get the full vacation treatment. I'll get back to work tomorrow." he says with a shrug.

"Fixing isolinear chips, fighting Klingons, befriending dolphins, deciphering navigational star charts, all on your day off. I can't wait to see what you do when you're actually working." Troi lightly mocked, "I think you earned that drink. There is a bar on the mall level if you'd like to go."

Decks fifteen through nineteen in the forward saucer section held the mall. Troi led Tyson in through the deck nineteen entrance. Much like the shuttle bay, it was a wide-open area. There was a comfortable, natural glow emanating from the ceiling. The central courtyard ran the entire length of the mall with storefronts lining both sides. The stores were an eclectic mix of brick, steel, stone, and paneling. It wasn't uniform, but still aesthetically pleasing. Trees and plants pervaded the courtyard creating the most natural-looking space the gamer had seen yet.

Tyson would believe he was on a holodeck, if not for the artificial ceiling and the lack of zombies.

Tyson was still incredulous over the Zombie instant dungeon. Would they be regular slow zombies, fast 'Dawn of the Dead' zombies, or in-setting equivalent? That was what ultimately worried Tyson. Slow zombies shouldn't be a problem. Fast zombies were a bigger issue but manageable. The thought of in-setting zombies kept Tyson away from the holodeck. All the skills and perks he acquired thus far were in-setting. Was it plausible the instant dungeon would be as well? What would Trek zombies look like? The first zombie-like race that came to mind was the Borg.

The thought was terrifying. The implications are equally so. What happens if he's assimilated in the holodeck instant dungeon? Does he die? Or does he leave the holodeck Borgified, creating a First Contact situation before the crew is prepared? Tyson wouldn't risk entering until he had a weapon and accompanying skill at a minimum. Preferably, finding armor of some kind as well.

Breaking Tyson's musing, Troi asked," Any place that catches your eye? Most of the restaurants here serve synthohol."

About a third of the way through the mall, Tyson found a restaurant that fit his needs perfectly.

The hostess and waiters were all wearing black uniforms, the former leading Tyson and Troi to a table immediately as there weren't many crewmen seated inside. Restaurants like this were a popular novelty in his time, but Tyson was surprised they survived.

They sat across from each other in a booth wide enough to fit two on each side. The center of the table was dominated by a grill.

Troi asked," Why did you choose this restaurant out of all the options?"

"I wanted to cook for you. Everything I've eaten since I arrived here has been replicated." Tyson answered.

Troi smiled and informed," That's sweet, but Tyson, the meat here is replicated as well."

Tyson pursed his lips and tapped his jaw in a thinking pose. In many games with cooking skills, you can create food with bonuses. Even without a bonus, maybe he could remove the Replicated negative status effect.

Tyson lowered his hands and spoke. "How's about a little bet? If I can make this meal taste like it wasn't replicated, you let me cook for you again... On a date."

"If you can impress me, I'll join you for a date. But what if you don't? What do I get?" responded Troi.

Tyson held up three fingers. He replied, "Three favors. Whether it's a question I can answer, cleaning your quarters, delivering items, or bodyguard duty. Anything you want and I can do."

Troi agreed. When the waiter arrived, Tyson asked, "Do you mind if I order for us?"

Troi deferred to Tyson and he ordered. Two soju peach, bulgogi, and streamed rice please."

The server nodded and walked off. Tyson was relieved his cursory knowledge of Korean bbq carried to this time.

Tyson accepted the quest making a mental note of the objective. It didn't have direct cooking requirements, just needed to impress her.

Tyson thought back to the times he'd visited New York City with his friends. He wasn't a city person but made exceptions on occasion. One of his good friends lived and worked in Manhattan and had made it his mission to ensure Tyson was properly cultured and experienced when it came to city life. On one such foray into the city, he'd taken Tyson to Chinatown and Ktown, and they ate at a Korean BBQ restaurant. He attempted to remember and channel the etiquette lessons explained during the meal.

Tyson got up, went to the table at the side of the room, and grabbed plates and napkins. He returned to the table and placed them in front of their respective seats. The waiter returned with two wide-rimmed glasses and two glass bottles. He nodded approvingly at Tyson retrieving the flatware.

As the waiter left again Tyson explained, "In Korean BBQ restaurants, the amount of attention the wait staff gives can vary. In some, it's like a traditional sit-down restaurant. In others, you retrieve your own utensils, plates, and such."

Tyson pulled four thin metal sticks from the drawer on the table. He asked, "Have you ever used chopsticks before?"

Troi had not. Tyson, seeing the opportunity, slid into the booth next to her, abandoning his previous seat. First. he placed a glass in front of each of them. He grabbed one of the bottles, twisted it open, and poured some into Troi's glass. "In Korean barbecue, proper drinking etiquette is to fill other's glasses." He explained, passing the bottle to her. He had only filled her glass a fifth so she could have a taste. She poured a more generous portion, filling his glass halfway.

Picking up their glasses he said, "Soju is a distilled alcohol made with rice or potatoes. In restaurants like these, there are lots of different types of meat to choose from. Soju pairs well with many things so it's a popular choice."

Tyson raised his glass towards Troi, "To the future." He had a few different thoughts about what to say but decided to keep it simple and vague. He could've meant the future, which was now his present, that he was hopeful for the future, or their potential future together… If he doesn't blow this meal.

Leaving the interpretation to Troi, she clinked glass with him and repeated his words. After taking a sip, he placed down his glass and grabbed two chopsticks.

"Most Asian restaurants from my time had chopsticks available along with regular utensils. Don't feel obligated to use them, but feel free to try for the experience."

There are several styles for using chopsticks, but he'd only ever had success with one. Tyson demonstrated how to wedge the middle of the bottom stick between the thumb and hand, with the ring finger providing counterpressure. Then showed the top being wedged between the pointer and middle fingers and thumb.

"With this style you only move the top stick, trying to pinch the food between the tips of both sticks."

The waiter arrived with salad, corn cheese, and the meat plate. Tyson thanked him. After the plates were settled, he went back to the side table and grabbed utensils, including large tongs.

He sat next to Troi once again. She picked up the chopsticks and began trying to fiddle them into place. Tyson kindly assisted, remaining encouraging in his criticism. He hadn't made eye contact while this close to her since they were face-to-face in the pool. Here, however, there was lingering contact while correcting her technique. It was subtle but surprisingly intimate.

Tyson refilled her glass, adding more soju this time. He turned his attention to the stovetop grill in the center of the table. Thankfully the waiter had turned it on while he was distracted. He used the tongs to grab one slab of meat and placed it on the grill. He then grabbed the scissors from the drawer, cutting the slab into smaller slices.

Troi was engrossed in trying to eat her salad with the chopsticks and hadn't noticed the exchange. Tyson grabbed the next slab of meat and began preparing.

The third batch came out just as good as the second. Tyson didn't plate this meat, there was already more than they could eat.

The look on Troi's face told Tyson he'd completed the quest. She exaggeratedly closed her eyes and let out a sighing moan. Having finally gotten a handle on the chopsticks, she quickly ate all of her meat. Troi turned a pleading look on Tyson. He smiled and said, "Go ahead."

He was glad he ate the 'bad' batch himself. After she finished all the remaining meat, she slouched back into the booth seat. "I don't know how you did it, but that was fantastic. Not only did it not taste replicated, but it's also easily the best food I've had since being on a starship. You'll have your date. How does in a week sound?"

Tyson agreed and in his hand appeared ten slips of gold-pressed latinum. He placed the latinum on the table and stood to leave. Troi looked between Tyson and the latinum on the table, once, twice, "Dare I ask how you did that?"

"Alien space-god stuff again," he replied.

She scoffed. Troi then grabbed Tyson's hand and rushed him out of the restaurant, through the mall courtyard, and towards the turbolift. On the opposite side of the courtyard from the Korean restaurant was a shop with daggers and other weapons displayed in the window. A Klingon man was standing in the doorway. He wasn't wearing the grey armor Tyson was used to seeing on television. His outfit was a tan cloth, cut in a style similar to what a Jedi would wear. As Troi tried to drag him away he raised his other hand in greeting and declared," Qapla'!"

He wasn't sure if that was the proper phrase to use in this case, but it was the only clear Klingon phrase that had been ingrained in his memory. The man replied with the same phrase and Tyson received the message he was hoping for.
