Star Trek TNG: The Next Gamer

Episode 1.5: Meta-knowledge is OP

The darkness of the holodeck was all-encompassing. Tyson quickly tapped his com badge. "Tyson to Lieutenant LaForge."

There was no response. He was about to try to contact other senior staff members, but the darkness was gone before he could. One moment he was standing in pitch black, the next he found himself in a small oddly shaped room. It took him a moment to recognize it as a shuttle pod.

A screen flickered on near the forward control console. Tyson recognized the man on the screen as Jonathan Archer, Captain of the NX-01 Enterprise.

Archer began speaking "Recruit, by the time you receive this message, your shuttle pod should have docked with the Seleya. Enterprise picked up the Vulcan distress call and attempted to provide aid, but all the Vulcans on board are suffering from neurological pathway decay caused by Trellium-D. We lost a mako and T'Pol in the medical bay. Malcolm and I barely escaped ourselves. Malcolm managed to get you out there by remote piloting the shuttle pod. You're their only hope. We don't expect a miracle from you, Enterprise will return to pick you up once you navigate the shuttle pod out of the asteroid field. Good Luck."

The screen went black. The shuttle pod wasn't moving, so Tyson assumed it was already docked with the Seleya.

Tyson recognized a few differences between this quest alert and others he'd received. First, the quest had no option to reject or accept; it was automatically given to him. The second thing he noticed was the objective. It only required him to leave the asteroid field. He could pilot the shuttle pod out now, and complete the base objective with little danger. Lastly, a companion, two perks, and a starship were on the line, he was going to do his damndest to complete all the objectives.

Saving T'Pol was his first timed quest which made it his top priority. Quickly surveying the pod for any useful items, he found none. Glad for his earlier purchases in the mall before coming to the holodeck, Tyson headed to the ladder in the back of the shuttle pod and made his way up into the Seleya.

Once ascended into the Seleya he went to the closest access panel and began looking it over. It was written in a language he didn't recognize. Immediately he received a notification. Ignoring it for a moment he continued to look over all the words. Then he began moving through the interface. After a minute he tried whispering a few of the words out loud.

Language Skill Unlocked!
Vulcan (level 0) - The primary language spoken by those of the Vulcan race.

Vulcan Language Skill Increased! 0-2

Now having a basic understanding of the language, he attempted to close the bulkheads around the shuttle pod entrance and encrypt them.

Computers Check: Success!

The bulkheads closed on both sides of the shuttle hatch leaving Tyson safe for the moment. He moved to the ladder in the available corridor that would lead up to the next deck. The nearby access panel allowed him to view the ship's map. The medical bay was two decks above his current location. According to Archer, that was where T'Pol should be, so he climbed until he reached that level.

Stepping out from between decks, Tyson got his first good look at the state of the ship. The corridor was filled with twisted metal forcing him to move cautiously. The once pristine halls, perfectly crafted by Vulcan logic were littered with the remains of deck plating and debris. Tyson could feel the weight of the darkness that hung over the ship. The power had been down for so long that the emergency lighting was barely functioning, casting deep shadows across the halls.

Tyson retrieved the tricorder from the engineering kit in his Inventory. He muted the device and used scanned for nearby lifeforms. Two signals were located between him and the medical bay. He stored the tricorder and did his best to sneak towards T'Pol's location.

Skill Unlocked!
Stealth (level 1) - This skill allows you to stay hidden and move silently to avoid detection, allowing you to sneak past foes or strike from an unseen position. Skill level cannot exceed governing attribute, Dexterity.

He crept down the corridor, ducking behind broken consoles and peeking around corners as he went. Exposed wiring was common among the debris and that, along with anything potentially useful he came across was stored in his inventory as he went.

Stealth Check: Major Success!
Stealth Skill Increased! 1-2

Tyson took his time ensuring he wasn't too exposed as he moved through the deck. Not actively using his tricorder, he didn't have an exact location on the two life signs. Sighting a lone Vulcan standing aimlessly in the corridor forced Tyson to stop and consider his approach.

If the message from Captain Archer and the fact of he was in a Zombie instant dungeon hadn't given away what the Vulcan crew member was, he might have considered approaching him differently. Maybe asking if he needed help or something. But dumb shit like that got you killed in zombie movies.

So Tyson looked at the space between himself and the Vulcan critically. He chose his footings ahead of time, equipped his mace, and closed the distance as soundlessly as he could. Once in range, he swung for the Vulcan's head.

Skill Unlocked!
Melee Weapons (level 1) - This skill determines combat effectiveness with any melee weapon. Skill level cannot exceed governing attribute, Lowest of Dexterity or Strength.

Checking the downed Vulcan's vitals, he was thankful the man was only unconscious. Tyson didn't know why it was a knockout and not a kill, but he wasn't going to complain. Using some of the wires from his inventory, he tied the Vulcan's hands together behind his back and tied his legs together. He dragged the man behind some debris and moved to search for the other Vulcan.

Melee Weapons Check: Success!

The process went similarly for the second Vulcan. He was equally as oblivious and went down just as easily. Following the same process, Tyson tied him up as well.

Zombie Vulcan Defeated (2/147)
+200 exp (5350/7000)

Tying up the defeated Vulcans may seem excessive. But Tyson had clear memories of the Vulcans rising again after being downed by phasers during the television episode. He wasn't sure if the same would happen from melee hits, but being extra cautious when it came to zombies couldn't hurt.

Tyson proceeded to sickbay without issue. The sickbay of the starship was a scene of utter chaos and destruction. Equipment and medical supplies lay scattered about the room, some reduced to rubble, others flashing warning lights or sparking with electrical discharge. The gleaming metal walls and floors were dented, scratched and scorched, as if a ferocious battle had taken place within its confines.

He made his way over to the mostly intact biobed. This biobed was not nearly as advanced as the ones he'd seen on the Enterprise-D. During the 2150s when the original Enterprise was launched the Vulcans had superior technology compared to Earth. Looking at this now, it was at least a century out of date. An unconscious Vulcan female lay in the bed. The typical Vulcan bowl haircut did little to distract from the beauty of her angular features.

T'Pol {Sub-Commander}
Negative Status Effect: Trellium-D Poisoning (Stage 0)
Unconscious

Observe reported she was unconscious and Tyson wanted to keep it that way. The first symptom of Trellium poisoning in Vulcans was paranoia. He was on a time limit and didn't want her to interfere with his efforts to get her to safety. Leaving her for a moment, he began looking through the hyposprays.

Axanol! It was a sedative and anti-psychotic. Both were exactly what he needed. Even if T'Pol woke up, hopeful the anti-psychotic properties would keep her calm enough to return to the shuttle.

With the hypospray administered, he retrieved his tricorder to ensure no additional zombies were wandering the halls. The area clear, he returned to T'Pol. Removed her restraints, and hoisted her into a fireman's carry. The first hurdle arose when he reached the ladder. T'Pol was 5'7" and 130lbs, Tyson at 5'10", and 185lbs would not have an easy time taking her down a ladder. Tyson attempted to get in position to descend the ladder.

Athletics Check: Failure!

He knew immediately it was doomed to fail, he couldn't keep T'Pol in the fireman's carry position. Her foot hooked on the ladder and Tyson lost his grip. He managed to catch himself before falling, but T'Pol tumbled to the lower level.

"No!" Tyson shouted as the world turned grey. T'Pol's body flew up as if gravity had reversed. Tyson watched detached as she returned to his shoulder and they returned to the position they'd been in before approaching the ladder.

-1 Luck

Failure was a great teacher, and Tyson wasn't so stubborn to make a second attempt in the same way. He shifted her position to be across his arms, almost in a bridal carry, and once again attempted to traverse the ladder.

Athletics Check: Success!

Miraculously, Tyson was able to get down 2 levels to the shuttle with no issue. He moved slowly to ensure she remained balanced between his arms as he descended. Lowering into the shuttle pot was no more difficult than traversing the ladders between decks. He gently laid T'Pol down on the floor of the shuttle pod receiving a notification.

Companion Gem: T'Pol Acquired!

Tyson confirmed he had the companion gem in his Inventory. The gamer made sure T'Pol was comfortably placed before climbing back up to the medical bay. He retrieved one of the unconscious Vulcans and carried him to the biobed. Without the looming timer and no nearby zombies, Tyson had time to stop and think.

He recalled the plot of this episode. The zombie Vulcans were tough, and not completely without intelligence. Archer had sent scans of the Vulcans to his doctor, Phlox. The Denobulian physician had told the Captain that the Vulcans were too far gone, he couldn't help them, but he was able to help T'Pol because she hadn't been exposed for as long. If Phlox hadn't been able to help them, how could Tyson with his level 2 medical skill? Maybe if he had some technology from the Enterprise-D he could do something, but he couldn't leave the in-progress instant dungeon.

Undeterred, Tyson used his tricorder in conjunction with the scanners on the biobed to get all the measurements possible.

Medicine Check: Failure!

His first attempt was a failure. He checked again focusing on the neural pathways Doctor Phlox had said were deteriorating.

Medicine Check: Failure!
Medicine Check: Success!

Tyson was finally able to detect the decay in the neural pathways. Using that data, he attempted to catalog all the medicines in the room and determine if there was something that could repair the neural decay.

Medicine Check: Major Failure!

He wasn't able to find a medicine that would help. The Vulcan on the biobed began struggling, straining the bindings. Vulcans were two to three times stronger than humans and he probably would have been successful if Tyson hadn't grabbed the still nearby hypospray of Axonol and jabbed him in the neck.

Tyson adjusted his plans once again pulling on his meta-knowledge. He had several ideas but needed to reach the auxiliary control room to institute them. In the television episode, the Vulcans had locked the boarding crew away from their ship using the emergency bulkheads. Archer was forced to the auxiliary control room to open the bulkheads. Tyson set that auxiliary control room as his next destination.

Before leaving the gamer inventoried all the hyposprays, and everything else handheld. He even removed the unconscious Vulcan and stored the biobed. He silently returned to the corridors leaving the medical bay behind.

Tyson reached the Auxiliary Control Center nearly an hour later. After reaching skill level five he stopped receiving increases in his Stealth skill. The oblivious Vulcans no longer offered a challenge as he was almost impossible for them to detect. The only close call was when he came to a corridor and had to leap over a hole in the flooring. Stomping as he gathered the velocity to clear the chasm and his loud landing nearly give him away.

Tyson spent the next hour looking over the ship's manifest, supplies, and status to try to formulate a plan.

Warp Core - Offline

Impulse Engines - Disabled

EPS Grid - Damaged

Environmental Controls - Online

Life Support - Online

Shields - Disabled

Weapons - Disabled

Shuttlebay, Deck 12, Deck 13 - Decompressed

Vulcan Language Skill Increased! 2-3

His first plan was derived from a scene in this television episode. The Vulcans had flooded the room with Hexaflourine gas to try to kill the boarding party. Hexaflourine is deadly to humans, but T'Pol was also coughing during that scene, implying Vulcans are somehow affected. The plan was fruitless, however. Environmental controls could only be accessed from the bridge and there wasn't enough hexaflourine gas to flood the entire ship. Likewise, with Axonol or any other substance he'd inventoried from the medical bay.

Moving on to plan B, Tyson spent a few hours at the console.

Vulcan Language Skill Increased! 3-4

Four hours later, Tyson finally had the Critical Success he was seeking.

Computers Check: Critical Success!
Computers Skill Increased! 4-5

Tyson engaged the emergency bulkheads across the ship en mass, applying encryption to the ship's systems using the Cetacean language. It should be impossible for the Vulcans to bypass the encryption since in the 2150s the Cetacean language hadn't yet been deciphered.

Now that the Vulcan crew was separated and immobilized, Tyson began the slow trek to what passed as Main Engineering on this ship.

His progress was slowed, not because of zombies or difficulty navigating the ship. It took so long because he was making repairs to the EPS grid along the way. The gamer couldn't be more thankful for his Inventory and the engineering kit gifted by Laforge. The dark corridors and sparks coming from the walls and ceiling that had been everpresent since his arrival were caused by ruptured EPS conduits.

Tyson would sneak through a section knocking out all the zombies and restraining them. Then disable the plasma flow through the EPS conduits. After repairing the conduits he'd enable the plasma flow, ensuring everything worked properly. Section by section, deck by deck. After reaching skill level six, he no longer received increases in his Melee Weapon skills. Like his stealth skill, the Vulcans were no longer challenging enough to force his improvement.

The Seleya's shields, weapons, and impulse drive were disabled because power wasn't getting to them. Fixing the EPS grid would allow power to move through the ship properly. It reminded Tyson of working on the waste extraction system, he received no skill increases because the two-hundred-year-old EPS grid was simple compared to the Enterprise-D.

The monotony was only broken by the numerous zombies. Stealth and Melee Weapon skills maxed had him leaving a sea of tied-up unconscious Vulcans in his wake. A clear trail of unconscious bodies marked his roundabout path to Engineering.

By the time Tyson reached Engineering, he had repaired the EPS grid enough to attempt to restore power to some systems.

Engineering Check: Success!

The repaired EPS grid reduced the risk of overloads from the increased energy flow. If he hadn't made repairs along the way and reconnected the matter-anti-matter reactor, the ship would likely explode.

Tyson reactivated the Warp Core and began enabling various disabled systems. He needed to continue to the bridge, so he took the time to drag all the engineering crew into the corridor. He wouldn't leave them lying in the same room as the warp core. If they regained consciousness, they could cause havoc. The human recruit locked Engineering using the same Cetacean encryption and headed to his next destination, the bridge.

Eighty-two percent of the EPS grid was repaired by the time he arrived at deck one. His tricorder detected nine life signs on the bridge. Tyson equipped his mace and shield. The shield didn't have its own skill and equipping it gave a -2 to stealth checks. But the damage resistance it granted was welcome and he doubted he'd be able to sneak attack nine creatures in the same room, this wasn't Skyrim.

Stealth Check: Major Success!
Stealth Skill Increased! 5-6

His first sneak attack went much as all the previous ones did. As he moved to the second Vulcan, he was again successful. This time Tyson noticed he gained a skill increase because it was a more difficult Stealth check. This trend continued as he made his way around the bridge.

It was when he moved toward the sixth Vulcan that he was finally spotted. The three Vulcans turned and moved on him at once. Their movement looked like a charge, but they were so slow it would be more aptly described as shuffling aggressively. Tyson was able to shuffle back as he fought, ensuring he wasn't surrounded and only had to fight them one at a time. He quickly realized they had little situational awareness and were so focused on attacking him, that they didn't consider the environment.

Tyson brained the first of the remaining Vulcans, the one he approached for the failed sneak attack. A second quick swipe knocked the zombie out. He had enough space before the second zombie was within his range so he accessed his Inventory, storing his mace and pulling out his phaser.

This was Tyson's first time using a phaser in live combat. His only previous experience was with Worf on the holographic targets in the security room.

Energy Weapons Check: Critical Failure!

+1 Luck

Tyson pointed his phaser and fired. Or tried to. His finger slipped and instead of firing, he set it to overload. The phaser was set to explode. The phaser that he was still holding in his hand.

Having no other options, Tyson tossed the phaser in between the two remaining zombies. The doomed energy weapon exploded in a fiery boom reminiscent of action movies, doing moderate damage and knocking the zombies to the ground. He reequipped his mace and knocked out the downed Vulcans before they had a chance to recover.

Tyson went to the operations console and began searching for the environmental controls. He heard the woosh of a door opening and before he could react, was promptly tossed across the bridge. He rolled as he landed taking little damage. This wasn't the first time Tyson had been tossed this week. Thanks to the flight he lost his mace, however. The weapon was placed next to the console as he was working.

Voris {Captain}
Negative Status Effect:

Trellium-D Poisoning: Trellium-D is a potent neurotoxin for Vulcans. This toxin causes severe aggression and paranoia. Prolonged exposure inflicts a Berserk state.
Berserk: -50% Defense, +50% damage. This status effect causes the character to fly into a rage, attacking the nearest enemy creature.

Voris had not been idle while Tyson took the moment to Observe him. The captain thankfully wasn't any faster than the other zombies the gamer had defeated earlier. Allowing Tyson to circle the bridge to retrieve his mace as the Vulcan pursued. He didn't like his odds in close combat. Vulcans were at least doubly as strong as humans and the Berserk status compounded that advantage.

His only ranged weapon was destroyed earlier leaving Tyson no option but to swing his mace at Voris. The Vulcan didn't have his hands raised in guard. Tyson landed a heavy blow to the head, staggering the zombie.

Melee Weapons Check: Major Success!

He pursued, but before he could make another attack was forced to raise his shield in defense. The Vulcan's blow hurt even through his block and drove Tyson back two steps. Tyson took advantage of the space created and shuffled a few more additional steps.

-2 HP

Now having a measure of the Vulcan, Tyson moved in for another attack. Tyson swung with an overhead chop and immediately raised his shield arm in guard. If this battle turned into a slugfest, he was confident the math was on his side.

Melee Weapons Check: Major Success!
Melee Weapons Skill Increased! 7-8

The exchange of blows continued like this for a few several rounds. Tyson would swing with the mace and then raise his guard to deflect incoming attacks. Against a more-or-less mindless foe, his shield was a godsend. In short order, the Captain joined his comrades in unconsciousness.

Tyson returned to the operations console. He diverted power away from the life support system across the ship, except for Deck One, lowering oxygen levels to the absolute lowest survivable. His master plan was now underway; he stepped away from the console to tie up the Vulcans on the bridge. No more mistakes being overconfident or not following up after battles. That done, he activated the impulse engines.

Computers Check: Success!

Tyson plotted a course out of the asteroid field, doing his best to avoid the largest of the rocks. The time he'd spent using the navigation system in Cetacean Ops paid off.

Physical Science Check: Success!

As the Seleya cleared the Asteroid field he started seeing notifications for defeating enemies. Minimal life-support caused the zombies to lose consciousness. It wasn't long before he received a slew of notifications.

Tyson returned life support to all the corridors between the bridge and the shuttle pod. He carefully made his way back, ensuring he stunned and tied up all the Vulcans along the way. When he made it back, he pulled the biobed from his inventory, making it appear in the middle of the shuttle pod. Attaching the biobed to the shuttle systems was trivial for Tyson's Engineering skills even though the technology was not from Earth in origin. Placing T'Pol inside, he reattached the restraints to her wrists and ankles. He pulled a hypospray from his inventory and used it on the bound Vulcan. T'Pol began to stir.

As she returned to consciousness, Tyson said," Subcommander, my name is Tyson, I'm a Starfleet Recruit, can you understand me?"

T'Pol stared at Tyson. He repeated his previous statement in the Vulcan language this time. Tyson heard T'Pol's voice for the first time, "I understand, apologies for not responding. I'm still experiencing disorientation."

She took in her surroundings, "How did I get to a shuttle pod? Last I remember was being restrained in this biobed while Captain Archer and Malcolm attempted to analyze my condition. They were attacked."

Tyson informed her, "My mission was to recover you from the Vulcan cruiser and assist the affected crew if possible. I infiltrated the ship and was able to transport the biobed to the shuttle pod and carry you back. Since you were not exposed for a significant amount of time, I was able to revive you." Trying not to brag he continued, "I managed to repair the Seleya enough to clear the asteroid field. I was also able to disable the crew without any casualties." Tyson continued.

T'Pol had many questions about the Enterprise boarding party, Tyson's method of disabling the Vulcan crew, and the status of what infected them. He did his best to answer her questions. Unsurprisingly, she showed no emotions when it was revealed she'd been abandoned.

Tyson informed her of his last potential plan to save the Vulcan crew. If it failed he'd have to contact Captain Archer and hope that Doctor Phylox or some other Vulcan doctor could eventually come up with a solution.

Leaving T'Pol in the shuttle he headed towards the Seleya Transporter Room. The sub-commander was forced to remain in the pod, there was still Trellium all over the ship. It was slow going as Tyson had to make the proper environmental adjustments and ensure the Vulcans remained disabled.

Tyson opened the console and examined the transporter components. On the Enterprise-D, the transporter stores a copy of the data of everyone who's ever used the transporter. There was a future episode where this data was used to restore officers to a previous state, potentially curing diseases as a side effect of this procedure.

The Seleya's transporter was significantly less complex than the Enterprise-D's. The buffer only had the bandwidth to hold three patterns at a time and didn't store any data from previous transports. His idea had been a long shot given his current skills, but with this equipment, it wasn't even an option.

Tyson returned to the Seleya's bridge and contacted Captain Archer.

AN: The reviews are appreciated, especially the criticism.

Sorry if you're not a fan of the shipping. The Troi thing wasn't planned, in fact when I started designing the plot, Tyson went out of his way to not interfere with Troi/Riker. As stated in previous AN, I roll for everything and the dice just fell well with Troi's initial interactions. wwyd?

I started writing this story back in August and like to think I've improved since then, but read all the comments and strive to be better. As I'm editing, some of the stuff makes me cringe, but I've built the house of cards too high to make major changes now. The story is 50k words beyond these chapters and I'd rather write new stuff than rewrite.

Luck is Tyson's plot armor for when the dice go cold. But I don't cheat. If he dies... he dies.

This episode all I have is concept art for T'Pol.
