Chapter 13: Replies and meetings

When Harry woke up the next morning Hedwig had already come back with the responses from madam Bones and Lady Augusta. After a moment of thought Harry picked up Madam Bones letter first.

Dear Lord Potter

Thank you for your letter and I would like to set up the meeting. I have a free day on the 5th August if you would like to meet at the Leaky Cauldron at 10 and I will also be attending the meeting at Gringotts. If you would like to meet then I look forward to it.

As for being your magical guardian. I had no idea and was never informed, because if I was, you would have been living with me all of this time and wherever you have been all this time.

Putting the letter aside to respond too, Harry picks up the next letter from Lady Dowager Longbottom and starts to read.

Dear Lord Potter

It is good to hear from you after all of these years. I thank you for your letter and would like to set up that meeting and maybe another one between you and my grandson Neville. For the first meeting I would like it to be just the two of us. I have a feeling that you have many questions and I am sure that you would like some of them not to be overheard.

As for my grandson I would like for the two of you to meet and maybe you could help the boy build some confidence before the school year begins. You said you would like to meet in the next two weeks. If that is so, how about we meet on the 6th of August. If you are ok with this date please write back with a time and place for the meeting.

Placing the letter to the side Harry takes two pieces of parchment and begins writing replies to Madam Bones accepting her time and place and then writes to Lady Longbottom that he looked forward to meeting her at the Leaky Cauldron at 10 am on the 6th. Sending the letters off Harry went down to the bar to get some breakfast.

The days went quickly waiting for the upcoming meetings. Harry spent those days reading up on what the duties of a Lord were in the magical world and on what he would be doing at Hogwarts. The most interesting subjects were transfiguration, potions and defence against the dark arts.

At 8 am on the 5th of August Harry woke up and grabbed the book off the table next to the bed and began to read. Half an hour later Harry put the book down and got out of bed to dress and have breakfast. After finishing Harry went back to his room and spent the remainder of the time before the meeting thinking about the questions that he wanted to ask during the meeting.

At 5 to 10 Harry went down the bar to wait for Madam Bones. Grabbing an empty booth, Harry waits for the fire to flare. When the fire did flare green and a stern looking woman with greying hair and a monocle stepped out, Harry knew that this was the woman that he was supposed to be meeting. Standing up Harry made his way over and greeted the woman politely.

"Madam Bones I presume" Harry said, holding out his hand for her to shake.

"Yes Lord Potter. You are correct." she said, taking his hand and giving it a good shake. Harry led her over to the table and ordered them a large pot of tea.

"Well Lord Potter we have a lot to talk about. Where should we start." Madam Bones asked.

"Let's start with the easiest question, how did you know my parents."

"We were at school together and then I worked with your father in the Auror department." Madam Bones started. "Your mother and I had been friends since her third year and my sixth."

"Thank you for that explanation. Next question, where were you on the day my parents died."

"2 months before your parents died my brother and his wife were killed leaving their child in my care. Her name is Susan. I was looking after her when they were killed."

"I'm sorry to hear about your brother and if this goes well then hopefully I will be able to meet Susan." Harry said and Madam Bones nods. " Now to question that I really want to know the answer to. Why didn't you come for me or look for me."

"I didn't know I was your guardian nor did I know where you had been taken. All the wizarding world was ever told is that you were safe with a loving family. If I had known that I was your magical guardian then I would have looked for you ten times over. You are important to me." Madam Bones said earnestly trying to convey the truth of the words.

Harry nods at her words before beginning to speak. "I believe you Madam Bones so how would you like to move forward with our relationship. I am currently staying here at the Leaky Cauldron for the summer before I can find a more permanent home, for the rest of my time at Hogwarts."

"If I may, I can ask a question."

"Go ahead."

"Why not go back to the people that you have been staying with for the past ten years."

"Because they were not good people and did not treat me well."

"Oh well if by the time Christmas come and you still do not have a place to live with Susan and I."

"That is a very kind offer but I couldn't do that to you and Susan. Besides she does not know me and that could make it hard for her to accept a new person into her home."

"Even so it is my job to look after you even if I didn't know until recently. Your parents were good friends and I would like to be there for you like they were for me."

"Well if by Christmas I don't have a place to stay by then I will accept your offer Madam Bones."

"Please call me Amelia Lord Potter."

"Harry then. Amelia."

"Thank you Harry for this second chance."

"It is no problem Amelia but there is one more matter of business. The meeting at Gringotts on the 31st of August. This will have to be in the capacity as the Head of the DMLE. Something was uncovered about Dumbledore and other people that need to do it. You will find out more at the meeting but you can not do anything until the meeting."

"I can see how important this is to you. I will clear the whole day for the meeting. I would like to help in any way I can."

"Thank you, the appointment at 1pm. I would like to set up a meeting between us and maybe Susan before then so that we could get to know each other better. If that is ok with you of course."

"Would love that maybe next week at the same time and place."

"That is acceptable."

"Good. I am sorry but I have to get to work now."

"No problem Amelia. I am glad I got to meet you."

"Me to Harry." and with that both Amelia and Harry got up and walked to the floo. Shaking hands one last time Amelia stepped into the fireplace and disappeared.

With the meeting over and the connections made. Harry went back to the booth. The meeting lasted 2 hours and Harry was feeling hungry so he picked up a menu. The rest of the day passed quickly. Later that night when he was in bed did he look at the meeting tomorrow.
